Alternative Tire Choice for 2011-2013 GT500: Michelin Pilot Super Sport

If you drive a 2011-2012 Ford Shelby GT500 with the optional SVT Performance Package or are fortunate enough to own the 2013 model, you'll be pleased to know that a new tire choice is available for your staggered 19" and 20" wheels.

Previously the only matching tire available for the 265/40-19 front size and 285/35-20 rear size was the Original Equipment Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2. Although not a bad performer by any stretch, many customers had expressed a need for an alternate tire up to the task of harnessing the massive power and torque these vehicles produce.

Recently, Michelin released the Pilot Super Sport in these two staggered sizes and has since been the tire replacement choice for many of my customers. Close in price, the Pilot Super Sport boasts excellent performance test figures and is currently our top-rated consumer favorite. Although no street tire can resist wheel spin on a 650+hp RWD car, these Michelin tires represent an excellent available performance option when considering a replacement set of rubber on your Shelby.

I own a 2011 gt500 with track pack. I dont like the G2 because they dart a lot in regular daily driving. The Pilot super Sport shouldn't be as bad because they have a directional thread lines. Am i wright ?

Assymetric tires that have more conservative tread patterns are known to be some of the most street friendly tires available. The Pilot Super Sport does this and many other things quite well.

It's nice to have another summer tire. I've heard these are better all around than the G-2's. With that said, it doesn't help all of us who drive in cool temps and want an all-season tire. Sure wish someone would release something similiar to the Conti DWS in the right sizes for us.

I deliberately DIDN'T get the track pack on my 2012 GT500, because I didn't see the point in it. So, with my 19s all around setup, what's the best tire? I live in the hottest, driest part of the California desert, so rain, snow, or cold are not a factor at all. Thanks.

While having the 19's on all 4 corners gives you more options, the best rated tire available would still remain the Michelin Pilot Supersport highlighted above.

The largest sizes we list as a gauranteed fitment are 255/35/20 F and 285/35/20 R.

I have a 2011 GT500 without the SVT package so I have 19s all around. Is there a slightly wider Super Sport that will fit my rear wheels?

Currently the only sizes we support for the GT500 and its staggered wheels are the factory sizes.

What kind of mileage are people seeing out of the G2? Ive seen the 265/40/19 at great prices in a few places, and am thinking of running them on all 4 on my 9.5" wheels.

While we do not have a full slick tire, we do have a Toyo Proxes R888 meant for road course and competition use.

On the GT500's the MPSS Tires have an issue with side to side movement. I really like the tire, but this issue has me and many others looking for a different tire.

is it true that a Michelin tire 285/35/20 is actually smaller than a Good Year Eagle F1s 285/30/20? Could I go with a 295/35/20 Rear, and a 275/35/19 Front? Thanks!

The section width and tread width between a Michelin Pilot Super Sport and a Goodyear Eagle F1 are identical. While some consumers have had luck running wider tires on the GT500, this is not something that we can guarantee.

I have heard many very positive comments regarding MPSS tires. What 'issues' does Mr Johnson have with MPSS side to side movement? I have read that the All Season Pilot Sports are somewhat soft and less sticky on turns. I am almost about to purchase a set of MPSS for my 2012 GT500.

I have a SVT 2011 GT500 convertible that is stock. This car is traction challenged in 1st and 2nd gear with the Goodyear Eagle F1. I have 285/35/19 on the rear and 255/40/ 19 on the front. What is the best replacement tires i can purchase to improve traction?

Ron, You could go one of two directions. First, stick with a street oriented tire like your Goodyears but with much better grip. In this case, our recommendation would be the Michelin Pilot Super Sport:

Second, you could go with a Streetable Track/Competition tire that will give you better grip but will have a shorter life span and be less civilized on the street like the Pirelli Corsa System:
