What Air Pressure Should I Use in My Tires?

Many drivTire Placarders understand it's important to monitor the air pressure in their tires. Improperly inflated tires hurt fuel economy and cause irregular and/or rapid tire wear in addition to posing safety problems.

It's recommend to check your tires' pressure at least once a month and before any long trip. Who really marks their calendar each month with a reminder to check tire pressure? I'll plead guilty that I don't. Instead, I check mine each time I wash my car.

You've got your air pressure gauge in hand and air compressor ready, but some will ask, "How much air pressure should I have in my tires?" Logic might dictate that one would simply check the sidewall of the tire, much like you do on a bicycle tire. However, this would be incorrect. The tire size used on your vehicle is also used on other vehicles and the recommended air pressure is different depending on the vehicle. For example, it may surprise many that a 2006 Acura MDX SUV uses the exact same tire size as a 2010 Chrysler 300 sedan.

Remember that the pressure listed on the sidewall is a maximum pressure only, not a recommended pressure. Instead, use the air pressure recommended in the vehicle's owner's manual or tire information placard label. The placard is typically found in the driver's side doorjamb, like the example in the photo above.

For more information on properly setting your tire pressure, read "Checking Tire Inflation Pressure."

Hi, I am trying to get the reccomended tire pressures for a few vehicles I have with custom wheels. I have a 1998 Lexus GS 400 with 20s 245/35/20, 1997 Cadillac DeVille with 18s 235/50/18 and a 2007 Lincoln Navigator with 26s 305/30/26

Your setups have sizes that we haven't tried so the following are my best guesses on what ranges I would start the air pressure at :

98 Lexus GS400 34-36psi
97 Caidillac DVille 32-34psi
07 Lincoln Navigator 35-36psi 42psi with passengers/luggage/cargo

recently purchased a 2005 Jeep with Hercules LT265/75R16 M/S tires. (OEM tires were 15", lable on door jamb does not provide info for a 16" off road tire. I am trying to locate the correct pressure required in the tires. Do you have that information?

We do not carry Hercules tires, nor have we tried this size on a Jeep so I do not have information on a tire pressure for this application.

What is the correct tire pressure for Michelin Pilot Super Sport XL on a Ferrari 550 Maranello. The tire sizes are 255/35ZR-19 and 305/30ZR-19 I purchased these from you to replace the stock 18s. Thanks

These tires sizes will also use the same air pressures front and rear as your factory 18" sizes as the same overall diameter has been maintained for proper tire load capacity.

We aren't familiar with that particular sizing setup on the Impala, but I would start with 36psi as a good pressure to maintain load capacity.

We have not tried tires as short as 225/30R20 on the 2004 Cadillac CTS, so we do not have a recommended air pressure for this application.

Is it safe to use tire 235 55 17 on 2006 Lexus RX330. Is there any negative impact on the vehicle?
Friday, April 15, 2016 by Tire Rack Team

Alex G, A 235/55R17 is going to be shorter than we would normally see on the Lexus. It will look a little small and will throw off your speedometer and odometer. However the biggest concern would be load capacity; the smaller tire may not have enough load capacity to carry the vehicle. -- sonny@tirerack.com

I have a 1999 lexus gs300 with aftermarket rims but the tires are goodyear 19 run on flats an i been having the air a 42 then 40 now 36 jus looking for the recommended air for these tires at max 50 anybody lend me a hand ‚úč thanks
Monday, May 14, 2018 by Tire Rack Team

Leroy, the tire pressure to run is in the driver's side door jamb. With your car and any size wheel, you start there and can add a couple psi to feel without exceeding the max pressure of the tire you have.
