The Good, the Bad and the Impossible Regarding Treadlife Warranties

What Honest Abe Doesn't Tell You About Minimum Tread Depths
No one wants a tire that disappoints them in regards to treadwear. Before a purchase, most people want to know approximately how many miles they can get out of a set of tires. Consumers also expect a tire manufacturer to stand behind their product if the tires wear out too quickly. From these needs, the tire treadlife warranty was born. Learn more about warranties in the article "Treadlife/Mileage Warranties."

You've probably seen tires with very high mileage warranties when shopping for tires. 90,000 miles out of a tire? Of course, that sounds great, until you take a closer look at the stipulations and requirements in order to get that warranty honored:
  • All four tires must wear evenly.
  • You must wear the tires down to 2/32nds of an inch (illegal in some states).
  • You are required to prove that the vehicle is in proper alignment.
  • You must monitor and carefully maintain inflation pressures.
  • You must present proof of purchase and date of installation.
  • Many warranties are good for only five years.
So before you get sold on a tire simply because of its treadlife warranty, keep the above points in mind. One area of particular concern is the requirement that the tires need to be worn down to 2/32nds of an inch. This would depend almost entirely on what tire you are referring to.

Own a 2010 328i. Hate my RFT. Way to much noise and hardly 10,000 tread life. Considering replacing RFT with regular tires. I travel a great deal and worry about not having a spare. Rear tires are larger then front. Vehicle handles very well, just hate RFT!!!
