Michelin Pilot Super Sport vs. Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

Are you looking for the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2? It was once a great choice for the performance enthusiast seeking maximum handling and grip. In fact, for nearly a decade, the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 was one of the top Max Performance Summer tires that money could buy. However, a couple years ago, Michelin discontinued this tire in most sizes and replaced the tire with their new flagship performance tire, the Pilot Super Sport

While the tires may not look very different from one another, the Pilot Super Sport is a noticeable improvement over the old Pilot Sport PS2. The following are some of the key advantages of the Pilot Super Sport compared to the Pilot Sport PS2:

  • More dry grip
  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • Extended treadwear
  • Improved wet traction
  • Faster steering response
  • Reduced tire weight up to 10% compared to competitors
  • Faster steering response

In addition, Michelin has priced the Pilot Super Sport a bit below that of the old Pilot Sport PS2 in many sizes, making the newer tire a great deal! I installed this tire on my car, and you can read my review of it at "Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 5,000 Mile Update."

Here we are a year down the road, and Tire Rack still lists my size in the Web catalog. If I decide the PS2 is better for my application, what do you think the manufacture datw will be? The only reason I am considering the replacement of my current PS2s is that they were made in 2007. Too old to be running around on in a high-performance car.

where can I find the specs for the Pilot Super Sport such as best operating temperature, optimum tire pressure vs ambient temperature, etc Thanks for any assistance you can render.

The PS2 is a run flat and the Super Sport is not, correct? Will the Super Sport work on my 2011 BMW 335d that currently uses Run Flats? I have been told that they will not perform by the BMW dealership and that I should stick with the PS2s.

Mike Miller, Yes, you can use a standard tire on the 335D instead of a run-flat. -- sonny@tirerack.com

No, The PS2 tires are generally not run flats unless you buy the ZP (zero pressure) version.

I would like to try the Pilot Super Sports for my Carrera 4S but they are not "N" spec. Will this make a difference?

L Andreoli, It is fine to use non-N Spec tires on your Porsche. However, for lease returns, most leasing companies want the car returned with N-Spec tires installed.

Are the Super Sport ZPs loud? I only get 10-12k miles out of any tires. I know...I'm a girl.

Maya, They are reasonably quiet for a Max Performance Summer tire. Depending on your size/sizes, there may be quieter options available. If you would like to discuss options, please feel free to contact Sonny directly at 888-428-8355 EXT# 4789

I went from PS2 to Super Sports on my BMW 1994MS3. The SS are TERRIBLE: flabby, floppy, ride like an old Cadillac. The PS2 felt geared to the road, although with much more brittle ride. I traveled over the same road course within about 1 hour between tires.

If John ran brand new SS 1 hour after well worn ps2 that's not a valid comparison. New tires have the mold release compound which takes at least a day to wear off.

I am currently running PS2 and need to replace my rear tires, fronts have about 2/3 tread remaking. Can I replace the rears with Pilot Super Sports and not have a problem?

Jim: This is the bulletin from Michelin regarding the Pilot line:

MICHELIN® Pilot® Super Sport tires are designed, in specific dimensions, to replace the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport PS2™ tire line. Due to the improved performance of the MICHELIN® Pilot® Super Sport tires, these products must not be mixed in any configuration or combination on the same vehicle.

Can't get consistent recommendation from you on the best 3 season tire for my C6 base coupe. I say to salesman STREET RACING AND VACATIONS,WINDY ROADS. They say either Mich PSS ZP or PS A/S 3+. Instead of the facts named here I get only
opinions of what THEY think. Which ONE is the best 3 season tire
for someone living in north WV. Sincerely Mike Briggs

Mike Briggs, the answer to the question of which tire is best for your Corvette depends on a variety of factors, namely what your priorities are. The C6 Corvette was originally equipped with run flat tires. If you want to switch to a standard tire, that will change the answer versus if you are going to continue using run flats. Also, how much you value ultimate grip and handling versus expected tire longevity will affect which tire is the best choice for your needs. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport ZP and Pilot Sport A/S 3+ are both very good choices, but to determine which of those two, or something else, is the best for your needs, we need a little more information.
