Dodge Journey Alternative Tire Size

Kumho Solus KH16Looking to replace the 225/55R19 Kumho Solus KH16 Original Equipment tires on your Dodge Journey?

An alternative size of 235/55R19 is a little wider and taller but will still fit on the vehicle and within the plus or minus 3% overall diameter of the O.E. tire size. If you decide to use the alternative tire size make sure you replace all four tires with the same size and tire. Tire Rack  recommends matching tires on all cars, but in this case, with Journey's all-wheel drive capabilities, it's even more important to have the same size and same tire. A matching set of tires will allow the vehicle's AWD system to operate as intended.

Also consider the following tires in the 235/55R19 tire size:
Yokohama Parada Spec-X
Michelin Latitude Tour HP
Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season

Will buying the alternative tire size for the dodge journey throw off anything to the carr

The 235/55/19 size is a gauranteed fitment from Tire Rack and is known to work quite well. Please get in touch with me via if I can help you with a set of replacement tires.

I have the Kumho tires on my 2010 AWD Journey R/T and I cant get out of my driveway with them. We have 24,000 miles on them and they are already balding. Looking for a set of all season tires that will get me out of my driveway. Any suggestions?
Tuesday, November 15, 2011 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

Per the list above, I would also recommend the Yokohama Parada Spec-X. It is a good performer at an excellent price. Email me via if I can be of assistance.

I'm looking for a cost effective (read decent tire that is not a HP replacement) for the Kumho's.
I live across the boarder from Buffalo, so being "decent in light snow "might not really good enough for my region.
I'm ok with going wider with the 235's, I just need something a little more aggressive in snow.
Any suggestions?
I will most likely go across the border and pick up the tires.
Thanks in advance. Jeff

If you are looking for a cost effective tire that rates well in all seasons, take a look at the Yokohama Parada Spec-X. It is avaialble in the 235/55/19 size and has always been very popular.

I must have got the only good set of tires Kumho made. I'm changing mine out cause the front 2 are separated and they have never been rotated, 58,000km, Looking at going to 235 casus all I can get in western Canada is all season winters. They won't last.

If I just have front wheel drive (FWD) on my Journey 2012 (SXT) would I still need to replace all four tires - how about both front tires or both back ones?
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 by ben@tirerack

We would not recommend mixing tire sizes on the Journey. Mixed sets of tires can sometimes cause unpredictable handling and/or loss of vehicle control.

Thinking of getting 20" Lexani or Giovanna rims for my 2012 RT. Could you recommend a few tire brands? I need specific summer performance, and winter dedicated tires. Not only that I live in Canada, but it's a legal requirement to have winter tires for blah 5months of the year. Email provided, please reply.

Will 255/50/19 be too wide for a 2009 Journey SXT?
Thursday, June 28, 2012 by Rick

is the Yokohama Parada Spec-X 235/55R/19 still available?
Friday, June 29, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

The Yokohama is available and currently $174/ea.

i have a 2012 Dodge journey with 19 inch tires on it what im looking for is there a smaller size tire for this vehicle (Winter tires)
Wednesday, July 25, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

Although we also prefer narrower winter fitments, the only snow size available for the Journey would be a 235/55/19.
Thursday, July 26, 2012 by Ross

hey, my tyre outlet in Australia has suggested using 235/45R19s or 235/50r19s. Would these both work on the Journey?
Thursday, July 26, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

While those two tire sizes will fit on the wheel, they are both considerably shorter than what we would recommend.

Will Michelin XICE 235/60R16 winter tires fit on my Dodge Journey 2012 (Canada Value package offer). If not which Michelin size should I purchase. Thanks.
Wednesday, September 26, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

According to our records, that tire size would be a bit short. The correct tire size for the Journey would be 225/70/16.

2010 dodge journey r/t awd. 15,000miles. Kumho tires seem to be in good shape. last oil change mechanic said no need to rotate. Is he wrong? should I and if so when should I rotate these tires. what rotation? reat tirees straight to front, front tires crossed to back?? is this right?
Wednesday, October 10, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

Rotating these tires would not hurt although may not be required. they can be rotated in criss cross pattern. -Marshall

I have 225/65/17 on my 2012 journey SXT. Can I go with a 16 inch winter tire and rim?
Thursday, October 25, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

16" packages for the Journey do exist and can be found using the winter fitment section of our website.
Saturday, October 27, 2012 by Rebecca

If I have a 225/55R19 on and your website says that I can put on a 17" or 18"....would that mean that I just need to get a diffrent rim? And what kind of diffrence is it oging to make? Especially when the sticker on the door calls for the 19"?
Tuesday, October 30, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

Downsizing to a smaller wheel will allow you to use a 17 or 18" tire. done appropriately with the correct sized tires, the vehicles electronic systems will never know the difference.

I have a Dodge Journey RT 2012 with 225-55-19 tires and am looking for winter tires. While the other Journey models come equiped with smaller tires, i was told I had to stick to 19'' due to caliper size. Is this true, what are my options for winter. I don't mind the 19'' for summer but would like something narrower for winter.
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by Luc

I have a Dodge journey 2012 with 225-65-17 and was told I would be able to put 16" wheel for winter. But this is not true... caliper will not fit in 16" wheel.
Maybe it's the same problem with 19". But I don't understand why galiper size would change with wheel size. It make no sense to me.. I meen, it's the same car, should it not be the same brake system regardless of wheel size??
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by ben@tirerack

On many vehicles the brake system changes depending on the trim level of the vehicle and options selected. Even if 16" wheels can clear a given brake package, it may be close enough that not every 16" wheel fits.
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

Our records indicate downsizing is possible down to 16" depending on trim model.

I have a 2009 Journey SXT with 225/55/19 Kumho's. the front 2 are borderline bald but rear's are fine. Can I safely replace only 2 and move rear's to the front? They're so expensive.
Saturday, November 24, 2012 by dhanna

I have a 2009 Dodge Journey and have 225/55R19 tires very disappointed on the tires. I would like to change the tire and wheel to less than 19 inch. Is this possible or change to 235/55R19. Please let me know.
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 by ben@tirerack

Yes dhanna. The original post above provides details about making this change.

I currently have a 2010 Dodge Journey SXT AWD. I am looking for 4 affordable tires that are great for all season. I live in Chicago so we experience a little bit of everything. Any recommendations?
Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

For an affordable well rated tire, take a look at the Firestone Precision Touring or the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422.

I have 225/65/r17 fitted on my dodge journey sxt 2010 model. Can i replace them with 225/70/r17 tyres?
Tuesday, December 18, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

While that size will fit on your wheels, it is taller than what the vehicle requires and may result in rubbing issues. -Marshall

I have a Dodge Journey SXT AWD. Can 255/50/19/ fit properly, and what would they do for gas milage? I looking ot purchase 4 tires.
Monday, December 24, 2012 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

That size would be a bit wider than what we would recommend. 245/50/19 would be the widest we would suggest. -Marshall

Sunday, January 20, 2013 by Kevin

Hello, I have a 2010 Journey SXT AWD and I need to replace the tires. I was told by a friend that works at a garage that if I go to the 235x55/19 it may cause my already horrible gas mileage to get worse and spedometer not to read correctly. Is this true? Thanks for your help
Monday, January 21, 2013 by Tire Rack Team

235/55R19 size tires have the same overall diameter as the Original Equipment 225/65R17 size tires. The slightly wider (10mm) may create a bit more rolling resistance but would not have a measurable effect on MPG. Some larger diameter wheel and tire combinations are heavier than the Original Equipment. A heavier wheel and tire assembly could also reduce MPG but the change may not be noticeable. There are too many variables other than size that may change your MPG to offer an accurate prediction on the final results you would have from a change to wheels and tires.
Tuesday, June 25, 2013 by Mark McClurken

Just replaced the tires off my 2011 Journey, put the Pirelli Verde 235/55/19 on, all I can say is these tires are awesome. They are stiffer, smoother and quieter. Can't wait to get these into some snow. Even the rolling resistence is less. They were a little pricey but well worth it.
Monday, July 15, 2013 by Carrie Turner

ok, let me get this right. By switching to 235/55R/19, I shouldnt notice any difference? Gas mileage etc? This is Guaranteed? I see you recomend brands, can you tell me the best for lots of rain and snow in the winter? Looking to replace all 4 tires
Friday, July 19, 2013 by ben@tirerack

Carrie, the diameter matches with one of the original tire sizes of the car, so they are a guaranteed fit. We cannot guarantee what your gas mileage will be, as there are too many variables involved there, but the size alone will not have a measurable impact. We have had excellent results with the Pirelli Scorpion Verde that Mark mentions above.

What is the biggest tire I could put on a stock 16" journey wheel? Would a 235/65/r16 or a 235/70/r16 work?
Saturday, August 24, 2013 by Joe

I just purchased a2013 dodge journey SXT and would like options on winter tires. I live in Canada where snow tires are mandatory but would prefer to buy a smaller tire and rims for the winter season . Any suggestions. Thank you.
Tuesday, August 27, 2013 by Marshall @ Tire Rack

On the journey you can downsize to a 16" wheel. Our recommended tire size with that is a 225/70/16. -Marshall
Friday, September 13, 2013 by Eileen

We just purchased a new 2013 Dodge Journey SXT fwd. I spoke with the dealership who informed us that you can't go down to a smaller tire size. Is that true? They said it had something to do with the brakes on this model? We are looking to purchase new winter tires and rims.
Monday, September 16, 2013 by ben@tirerack

The smallest wheel diameter that will fit on your Journey SXT is 16". Not all 16" wheels will work, but we do have some that fit.

I have a 2011 dodge journey crew which has 225/55 19 tires on it, can I use 225/70 16 for winter tires?

Wednesday, October 16, 2013 by dan

I have a 2010 dodge journey r/t. I am looking for a cheaper alternative for winter tires. I currently have 19" factory rims/tires. Is it possible to change to 17" rims and tires? if so what sizes are needed.
Thursday, October 17, 2013 by ben@tirerack

There would be options to downsize the wheels and tires for winter. Use the following link to view the available options:

I live in Canada where heavy snow is inevitable. I do some highway driving but also have gravel roads, so need a durable tire. What do you suggest?
Thursday, September 11, 2014 by travis

hi i have a 2013 journey with 225 55 19 can down size to a 225 50 17 or do have to go with the 225 65 17?
Friday, September 12, 2014 by Tire Rack Team

Travis, a 225/50R17 would be much too short and is not recommended. The 225/65R17 maintains the correct overall diameter.

I have a 225/65/r17 tires on my dodge journey. Will a 235/65/r17 work too?
Monday, October 13, 2014 by Tire Rack Team

Kyle, 235/65R17 is an approved size and should fit without any rubbing issues.

I have 2010 Journey SE with 225/70R16. Can I put 215/65R17 with matching rims?
Tuesday, December 2, 2014 by Tire Rack Team

Lyne, A 215/65R17 might work but would be slightly small. Our preferred fitment is 225/65R17. --
Tuesday, March 31, 2015 by Jose

I have Journey 2010 currently with 225/65/16. Can I replace them by 235/60/16, 235/70/16 or 225/70/16.
Which one would be better?
Friday, April 3, 2015 by Tire Rack Team

Jose, Approved sizes for the Journey with 16" wheels are 225/70R16 and 235/70R16. --
Tuesday, May 12, 2015 by mark

Hi, can you advise me regarding replacing my 225 / 65R17 dodge journey sxt 2015 to much larger rim like 19" to 20" and keep the tire also much bigger or I mean I dont want to lose the performance of the car. Thanks!
Thursday, May 14, 2015 by Tire Rack Team

Mark, When switching to 19" or 20" wheels it is necessary to reduce the sidewall height of the tire to insure proper fitment. A few recommended sizes are 235/55R19 or 245/45R20. --
Sunday, September 6, 2015 by jay

I have a 2010 journey awd and the tire size on it now is225/60r17 can i put 245/70 r17 on there without any rubbing or anything?
Thursday, September 10, 2015 by Tire Rack Team

Jay, That tire is significantly taller than the factory size and will likely result in rubbing issues. --
Friday, February 5, 2016 by Chris

Hey i have a set of 225 70r17 just got a 2015 dodge journey with 225 65r17 on it will the other tires work?

I want to use 245/50/19 for my Dodge Journey RT 2012 is that size is ok
Tuesday, February 9, 2016 by Tire Rack Team

Chris, the 225/70R17 is just a little bit taller than anything we can guarantee will work under full suspension compression without rubbing. --
Wednesday, February 10, 2016 by Tire Rack Team

Jay, Yes, the 245/50R19 is an appropriate choice for the 2012 Journey RT. Here are all of the options we offer in your preferred size:

I bought a 2016 Journey Crossroads with 225/55R 19 kumho tires. They are absolutely the worst tires for winter driving. I have been looking for an all weather tire but have found little. Any advice? Different size? Does that require different rims?
Tuesday, March 14, 2017 by Tire Rack Team

Jackie, The best all-season tire we have for winter traction is the Continental True Contact. This would be in the same size you have now. Here is a link to the tire:

Saturday, December 9, 2017 by Christopher Stewart

Can I use a 245 65 r17 on my 2010 dodge journey rt AWD as a winter tire
Wednesday, December 13, 2017 by Tire Rack Team

Christopher: That is a little taller than we could guarantee will fit without rubbing when you turn the wheel all the way. 225/65R17 is recommended and there is a good selection of winter tires in that size. Click here to see what's available:
