Update on original rating. Since I change wheels and tires summer/winter I have no opinion on winter condition traction. I use off road Yoks in the winter. Suffice to say that this tire is the most comfortable and quiet tire I have ever owned. Yoks are the superior brand of tire "for the money" in my view.

Initial Review, 50,000 Miles on Tires
March 16, 2013

Update to previous 4,000 mile review. A phenomenal tire, and I can see none rated better that I would buy. Exceptional in dry and wet conditions, even heavy rain. Good in light to deep snow, but fair in icy conditions. Have maybe 5-10,000 miles of tread left now that I've put on 50,000. Quiet, smooth, what we all would expect a good tire to be.

Interestingly, I work in construction. My previous Continental Cross Contacts which I loved, had a number of flats from picking up nails, etc. None with this tire, which is either coincidence, or signs of better tire composition, which I believe it is. Continental has none in this size, so I will buy this tire again.

This winter, I looked at the tread and had concerns about winter driving on worn tread. But, decided to stick it out and tires performed SURPRISINGLY well.

My Toyota V8 all wheel drive limited has the best of everything, and these tires meet my expectations. Mileage in summer averages 18.4, and less in winter due to gas reformulation.

Highly recommended for those who appreciate quality, safety and consistency. But, if you live where ice and snow abound all winter, you may want to consider winter tires, but these are more than able to take on CT winters. Best to you all.

Have used this tire on my Genesis 3.8 GT for tracking. They have at least 20 track sessions of 25 minutes . Very responsive and pleasant to drive. Best tires for this car without R compounds. When threads are used this is not a tire for tracking in the rain. Otherwise I will get the same tires for this car for sure. The tires have a nice thread pattern. Look nice and racy.

I bought these tires 6 or 7 years ago and they are --- tires. I put 53000 miles on them and they still have probably 8000 miles left in them. I kept them at 32 - 34 psi and rotated them religiously. They were a bit noisier than the oem F-stones and in these last 10k miles or so I had to have them rebalanced. One of them remains either unbalanced or out of round. Overall I am very pleased with these tires and have put Yokohamas on cars and been pleased with this brand in that application as well. I would definitely buy them again.

Warmer Weather is Coming - Time for a New Ultra High Performance All-Season Tire

Thursday, March 21, 2013 by Doc Horvath

With the snow melting in most of the country, driving enthusiasts are looking forward to a spring and summer of high performance driving fun. For those on a budget, there's a great selection of Ultra High Performance All-Season tires, including the Pirelli P Zero Nero All Season. The tire is currently ranked sixth in our Tire Survey Results.

Our extensive Real World Road Ride and test track have always separated the contenders from the pretenders. A couple years ago we tested the Pirelli against the Dunlop SP Sport Signature, Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 and Yokohama AVID ENVigor with the P Zero Nero All Season delivering the quickest and most direct-feeling steering of the group. The Yokohama AVID ENVigor and Dunlop SP Sport Signature followed, with Sumitomo's HTR A/S P01 right behind. All three options exhibited an excellent direct steering feel. Overall noise levels for all four tires were similar, with all producing some amount of tread pattern hum. The AVID ENVigor generated a small ringing tone when it encountered sharp impacts on the highway, and the HTR A/S P01 produced a little more tread noise than the rest.

On the track in dry conditions, the Pirelli P Zero Nero All Season had the quickest overall lap time with its very quick steering response and good overall grip. Dunlop's SP Sport Signature followed with plenty of cornering traction and similar predictable handling. The Yokohama and Sumitomo repeated their standings as before. In the wet, the SP Sport Signature was fastest, thanks to its responsive steering and good ultimate grip, especially under braking.

If you're in the market for new Ultra High Performance All-Season tires, read "Finding the 'Ultra' in Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires" before making your selection.

A generally competent 3-season tire - decent everyday ride and handling, but surprisingly stable and with good grip when really hustled. Turn-in could be sharper, but otherwise a very good compromise at a good price.

I normally use dedicated snow tires, but I got caught in a surprise 4-5" snow this past fall. I was able to get home, but would never drive these in the snow if it could be avoided.

Great set of tires. Replaced OEM Yokohama on my Mitsu that only gave my 35K. Now I'm at 125K and I still have a lot of tread left - I think at least another 10-20K. That is fantastic value for a set of tires that performed really well in snow (Chicago roads) as well as rain.Cant say a lot about noise, since they are as much or slightly less noisy than my Yokohama's. Installed at Costco, and rotated every 5-6K miles. Overall, extremely happy with my purchase and will definitely recommend it.

The Return of the King? Introducing the Extreme Performance Summer BFGoodrich g-Force Rival

Thursday, March 14, 2013 by Cy Chowattukunnel

Recently, we received our first batch of Extreme Performance Summer BFGoodrich g-Force Rival tires. The first shipment from BFGoodrich's Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant consisted of the 225/45R17 and 245/40R18 sizes, with 13 additional sizes to come. Unfortunately, it's too cold here at our Indiana headquarters to test the tire, however based on current data, it looks like this BFGoodrich tire will rise to the top.

BFGoodrich's internal testing and their launch comparison indicate mission accomplished. The g-Force Rival excels when driven side-by-side with traditional Extreme Performance Summer leaders.

Our test drivers were particularly impressed with the g-Force Rival's combination of consistent, extreme grip with a high degree of predictability. Instead of "peaky" grip levels which leave the driver wondering what their tire and car are doing, BFGoodrich has endowed the Rival with more progressive grip levels. This allows for better control because the driver has no doubt what's happening with his/her car and tires.

The NOLA Motorsports Park launch test featured some good competitors, but how will the g-Force Rival do against the newest rivals in its class? Dunlop has launched the new Direzza ZII. Bridgestone's rolling out the new Potenza RE-11A. Yokohama has the ADVAN Neova AD08. Who's the king of that group? With all due apologies to Dennis Green, we won't crown it now. We'll crown the champ in early June after completing our comprehensive in-house test.

FAQ - Mud-Terrain Tires

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by Gary Stanley

What are mud-terrain tires ?

Mud-terrain tires feature aggressive, heavy blocked tread patterns designed for off-road use in deep mud, rocks and uneven terrain. These tires are often produced in large sizes with reinforced heavy-duty construction. They fall into the Off-Road Maximum Traction category in our customer survey data.

What kind of drivers use mud-terrain tires?

Drivers who purchase mud-terrain tires range from off-road enthusiasts to those who simply want a more aggressive looking tire for cosmetic appearance.

Can mud-terrain tires be driven on the street?

Yes, all mud-terrain tires sold at Tire Rack are street legal and can be safely driven on the street and at highway speeds. Keep in mind, if the vast majority of your driving is on the street, you may be better suited choosing a tire in our On-/Off-Road All-Terrain category.  You can view a couple of our top all-terrain tires by reading "BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO vs. Michelin LTX-A/T 2."

How long do mud-terrain tires last?

Treadwear on mud-terrain tires can vary quite a bit depending on driving style, driving conditions, vehicle set-up and other factors. Average on a vehicle that's not heavily modified is about 40,000 miles of mixed off-road and street driving.

What are the disadvantages of using aggressive mud-terrain tires?

As you might guess, the more aggressive tread patterns of mud tires make more road noise than an all-terrain or highway street tire. Most mud-terrain tires also use heavy-duty construction methods that include thicker and more numerous sidewall plys. While this increases abrasion resistance, the reinforcement can make for a firm ride. The large blocky tread patterns of most these tires lack smaller tread blocks and sipes that are needed for good snow and ice traction. As a result, better snow and ice traction can usually be found with an all-terrain tire or dedicated winter / snow option.

What are some popular mud-terrain tires?

Below are a few options of Off-Road Maximum Traction tires we carry:

Two of the most popular choices are the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 and Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar.

 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2
BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2
 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar
Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar

Many off-road enthusiasts install suspension lifts, fender flares and other modifications to allow for larger tire sizes than are typically used on a non-modified vehicle. As a result, it is often more helpful to shop by size

I've had these original equipment tires for over 40K miles and three New England winters. I'm surprised at some of the other reviews showing very low mileage as I am not yet ready for replacements and I don't drive conservatively. Also, these are not snow tires and "all season" is a BS industry marketing ploy. I haven't needed to switch to winter tires but I drive carefully knowing stopping distance in snow is worse than with snow tires. Duh. Overall, these have been excellent tires. I may or may not get a second set when the time comes but only because I don't like the premium price compared to some other reasonable replacement tires such as the Yokohama PradaX. Beware of some of the exaggerated negative reviews although perhaps Honda and Toyota have matched the tire poorly but my Mazda has done just fine.

The tread life of this tire is the worst of any tire I have owned in over 35 years of driving. At 29,000 miles two tires have worn into the wear bars. Have always had the tires rotated at 5,000 miles, checked the air pressure monthly, and have only done light trailer towing; 1200 lbs. Once the tires had worn down to about 50% the ride became harsh.

My commute is 86 miles each way so 172 miles each day and around 60,000 miles a year.
Avid EnVigor is great on wet road. My other tires used to lose traction every time you start from a stop. this tires surprised me by not losing tractions. light snow even medium snow is fine .
the tire make my toyota sienna 09/10 van handle like a car
this tires is really live up to its name .high performance all season tires

My only complaint is the road noise which is higher than other tires i'm used to.
This is my second set of Avid EnVigor. i'm planning to try out a different set of tires. just for the sake of trying. i have change to a new set of tires every year any way
the treadlife is 60,000 miles max 55,000 to be safe. which for me is 1 year worth of driving. and i rotate the tires every 20,000miles.
if you need a High Performance All Season . get The Avid EnVigor.
remember that they have to put a softer compound to make the tire grip and stick to the road better thus the shorter tread life. and a bit noisier because of the aggressive tire pattern

Tires are on my wife car and she drive like an old lady. However when I drive it, I put it to the limit and it handles great. Noise level isn't too bad but could be better. My wheels are staggered so I can't rotate them. Plenty of tread left, hopefully it last to 40K miles. I would recommend these tires.
