Initial Review, 10,000 Miles on Tires

Rotated these tires once. My wife takes the car on long road trips and the wear seems to be pretty even. With the recent weather we have here, I would rate this tire as awesome in dry and wet traction. I can take on ramps and off ramps with confidence as the tires grip awesome in both dry and wet conditions. The tires will chirp off the line, especially in a turn, but just a chirp or two and youre off like a rocket. The stock Goodyear RS-2's that came on the car were complete garbage, but most factory tires are(they make them softer to quiet the ride down). Light snow is ok for an all season. Deep snow is ok, but snow tires should really be used for this. It was a tough call for me between this tire and the General Altimax HP, but this tire has a higher tread rating, and looks cooler too. Now that the G-max AS-03 came out, my next tire choice might be more difficult. But if you have a fwd Impala 3.5/3.9/ or the SS. I'd would tell you straight up-buy these tires, you wont be disapointed.

I love how these tires handle. Take in consideration that the rubber on these tires are thinner than most tires built to last mileage wise. Expect to spend more on tires that doesn't last longer than approximately 30K miles due to the fact that the rubber on these tires are thinner than those tires that can go for 40K+ mileage. The reason for the rubber on these tires are thinner is because performance wise it handles better on the road, it has that "hug" affect. There is more control over the vehicle than those other tires that can last 40K+ miles. Of course, these tires wear out quickly just to the fact that the rubber is made a little thinner.

So, yes these are great .. sport performance. Cost is expected for performance not for the long lasting performance. So depending what is sought out..These are the best for performance handling. The cost is steep .. but you get what you pay for. I'd purchase it again!

I bought these tires to replace a set of the Avid ENVigor's that I thought were awful. They were the noisiest tire I have ever owned, and only lasted 48k miles on a 60k warranty. I was hesitant to buy a similar line and looked at buying the Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2. After comparing them to the Avid Ascend's, I gambled and went with these due to the longer 75k mileage expectancy, and the deeper treads. So far, I am beyond happy with these tires. The ride noise is MUCH, MUCH lower. The ride is very comfortable, and feels brand new. The steering response has been great. I have driven them in a good downpour and they were great. No snow or ice yet as its going into summer where I live. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. 200 miles isn't that much, but the improved noise and ride comfort was so much better, I wanted to post this. I will continue to update as I put more miles on them and when I am able to get some winter driving in.

I am a licensed mechanic and car dealer for over 25 years and now an RV dealer and am very impressed with this tire. My 2012 Camry Hybrid XLE came with Bridgestones and barely got 31000 miles before wear bars showed. I researched all tires available with low rolling resistance and the Yokohama was rated 1st above all the others and ended up being the lease expensive since Toyota offered buy 3 and get one free special. Upon driving out of the dealership these tires transformed my Toyota into a Lexus with fantasic ride comfort, handling and ZERO noise factor compared to the Bridgestones!
I thought my 2 year old car was better than brand new.
I would caution that if you review the compounds of these tires the snow and ice things would not be ideal. I also think some of the negative comments I read were a result of not looking at the best tires for your car and your driving conditions.
Other than these subjective issues...IF you want the best tire at the best price and value....THIS IS THE ONE!
Sincerely
MLS

I am a Michelin Hydroedge fan. I drive diesel VWs so I purchase tires that are comfortable at higher inflations (40+psi) and great handling tires so that I can maintain momentum through turns. This is critical to my high MPG driving style. The Hydroegde is about as good as it gets in that department since they are low rolling resistance tires (LRR), the ride is still comfortable over 40 psi and they offer handling performance of a high performance tire even though they are listed as a passenger tire. Unfortunately they are not available for my Honda Fit. I was faced with only 5 choices for my car, and the brand new Dunlop 7000 tires that came with the car felt like bricks. Wet weather performance is terrible on the Dunlops. So, the Yokohama Avid Ascend was it. They intrigued me with the Orange Oil, LRR, Made in the USA and Blue earth advertizing. But the proof is where the rubber meets the road. The tires are scary... at first. At recommended inflations (30-32 psi)the new tires are very inconsistent and sidewalls are soft. They have grip in dry and wet, they are comfortable and quiet on the road, but until they wear in, the first few miles of driving are scary. The back of the car felt loose until the tire grabbed which is unsettling. I felt this in the Goodyear Triple tread also when they were new so I gave it a couple of days and after a couple of heat cycles these too felt better. The installer set them at 30 psi. Once the tires settled in I experimented with pressures and found 41 in the front and 36 in the back provides neutral handling through turns. 40 front and back made the car very tail happy as the outer and inner inch of tread of the rear tire was not touching the road. At 35 the sidewall was too soft moved a lot. Once they are set properly I find them to be comfortable, quiet and grippy tires- very good in the rain. Definitely feel like LRR tires compared to the Dunlops, the car feels more stable and sporty- but they are no hydroedges.

After 500 miles with these tires, i would say they are great. They are very smooth riding and quiet, much more than OEM Eagle LSs. Grip on expressway on and off ramps is very good. Gas mileage is the same so far through 2 tanks. There has been no rain or snow in Chicago this October, so I can't comment on wet or snow performance, but I'm looking forward to trying them on snowy Chicago streets. So far, a great tire for the price.

Sadly, I just got rid of this car, and did not have the time to swap out tires. I wouldn't call these tires Ultra, more touring that performance actually. Turn in is a bit soft, but if you go aggressively, they catch up and dig in. Very good ride, minimal noise. I didn't really use these in the winter, put on new in April, and traded the car just last month. Fantastic and predictable, even in deep rain from downpours. The best part was wear. No noticeable wear at all after 12k miles. My new car is a 2011 Camry with these same size tires. The Michelins that came with the car reminded me of how much I loved the new Yokahama. The Michelins taught me a good lesson in that latest downpour, they aren't very good at all. I will be buying a new set of these Yokahamas next year for the Camry.

Tires have been great for the first 15,000 miles. No sign of hydroplaning or loss of grip in rain. No snow yet but will have better idea after this winter. Great tire and very economical. As quiet and comfortable as my OEM Michelin Latitude HP and MUCH less expensive.

These tires replaced a set of Michelin Pilot Exaltos, which are excellent tires. On most measures I would consider the Yokohama to be even better. Dry and wet traction are both excellent, and better than the Michelins. Cornering is excellent. Snow traction is clearly much better than the Michelins.

I do not have enough miles on these tires to comment on treadwear.

The only negative I can think of is that these tires are a bit louder in hard cornering. This is no reason not to buy them, but they are going to let you know when you push the limit. That may actually be a good thing.

One final comment that I think is a bit of an anomaly: This set of tire were balanced three times in the first 750 miles. Basically that means at the original installation and once a week thereafter. There was a subtle high speed (65-70 MPH) balance problem. Neither of the re-balance efforts helped. The problem simply vanished on its own at about 1000 miles.

In summary, I am extremely pleased with these tires and would not hesitate to recommend them. Treadwear is as yet unknown, but the Michelins they replaced made it to 54,000 miles. I would be happy if these Yokohamas reach 40,000 miles.

I have over 220,000 miles on my Golf and have had Goodyear Eagle LS, BF Goodrich Traction TA (twice) and a Kuhmo tire (don't remember which one) and this Yokahama is BY FAR the best tire I've ever had on this car!
I cannot believe the traction it has in not only the wet, but the snow is really good. It feels like a full-blown snow tire to me.
Dry traction and handling is much better than any of the other tires I've had on the car. The sidewall doesn't roll-over during hard cornering (sorry, I'm a licensed SCCA driver so all of my cars go around corners quickly LOL).
Noise is hard to say, it's a 2000 VW Golf so it's not the quietest car to start with. Noise from the tires doesn't seem too bad at all.
All I can say is, this tire is night and day different than any of the other tires I've tried. You really should try them.

I live just outside of the Washington, DC area, home of the just about the worst traffic in the country. Luckily, my daily commute consists mostly of free flowing highway driving with light traffic (down the new ICC toll-road) so 70+ mph is my usual pace there. Otherwise, my normal driving is suburban stop & go, daily grind, sort of stuff. These Kumho Ecsta 4X tires are my 3rd set of tires on this vehicle and by FAR the best I've used. The stock tires were Goodyear Eagle RSA's and as the reviews for those state, they were completely average tires with poor handling in anything but dry conditions. My next set of tires, Yokohama Avid V4S were old standby's that I'd had before on a previous vehicle. They were great tires, especially for the money. At 107,500 I was ready to purchase new tires as I usually always can get 50K+ mi. out of my tires. I read a lot of reviews about the newly redesigned Yoko's but couldn't help noticing the great reviews that the Kumho Ecsta's had received. I took a shot many years ago with Yoko's and have been really happy with them on both my G35x, Ford Explorer, and my Honda Accord V6 coupe. Sorry for the rambling, but just wanted to give some background. In any case, the price on the Kumho Ecsta's was great, and the trusted Tire Rack reviews convinced me to give them a shot on my G. I've had these Ecsta's now for 16,500 mi. from 2/20/13 to current (one year) and loved every minute of these tires. The ride is great, the noise level is adequate, and handling whether through our 90+ degree HUMID summer to our 10 degree lows in several inches of snow in the winter has been nothing short of spectacular at every level. I would highly recommend these tires.

March 12, 2014

I got these tires already on my 2014 Dodge Caravan , and they are probably one of they worst sets of tires I have ever had . I was really surprised because , Yokohama's are usually great tires . I have zero traction in the snow , or in the rain . Even sometimes when i am pulling out into traffic the tires spin on dry ground . Then I have people laughing at me , because they think that I am trying to burnt out in a Minivan . All that said i would have been better off with a set of Mickey Thompson's on the van , they probably would have had more traction . It is like these tires are set of baloney skins . So I will be purchasing new set of tires from the Tire Rack very soon . Last time around I bought Continental Direct Contact tires, and they were a awesome set of tires . And Tire Rack was very helpful and quick to get my order out . Hope this helps and good luck!!!!

I love everything about these tires EXCEPT that they cause annoying vibration of the entire vehicle at highway speeds. I took the vehicle back to the installer. They rebalanced the tires but found no significant change from the original balance. I was told my wheels are not bent, and that the weights required to balance the wheels were not considered excessive. They thought the tires in the rear may have been the cause so they rotated them to the front. This made absolutely no difference. I doubt that I have 4 defective tires, but I can believe that the manufacturing tolerances for these tires do not meet OEM requirements. The Yokohama Avids that came from the factory wore out in 30,000 miles, but at least they rode smoothly. I'm very disappointed in these tires.
