Dunlop Direzza ZII Coming Into Stock for the 2014 Season

Wednesday, February 12, 2014 by Marshall Wisler

It seems hard to believe, but sooner or later the cold that has gripped most of the country this winter will soon lift and the snow will clear. When this occurs, competition events will be in full swing.

One of last year's hottest and best-selling performers, the Dunlop Direzza ZII, is filtering back into stock, and in many sizes is ready for shipment. This Extreme Performance Summer tire was one of our favorites in an internal test and has achieved much popularity within the ranks of our consumer surveys.

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the Dunlop Direzza ZII.

"The tires have well exceeded what I expected. I am more confident with these tires than I was with the Original Equipment. The wet traction is something Dunlop should be proud of. I will purchase them again!" -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX 4-Door STI Limited

"I am a hardcore amateur racer and I've used the ZIIs on my Cayman and they are incredible. In my opinion, this is the best street tire there is." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2008 Porsche Cayman

The Direzza ZII features a treadwear rating of 200, making it legal for most classes of SCCA and NASA competition. With 26 sizes offered, the ZII offers good market coverage of many popular sizes.

Initial Review, 30,000 Miles on Tires
December 07, 2013

I moved to Colorado in 2010 with my '08 Subaru Impreza WRX. My treads on my OE tires were getting low and winter was coming, so I looked into getting new tires and I found these. Purchasing these tires was the best decision I have ever made. My car always performed well in summer, dry or wet, so I won't talk about the tires performance in those conditions. But I'll talk about the winter conditions because thats where my car and these tires shined!

Whenever it would snow, I'd go out for a drive just because I could. It was fun to be in control when others weren't!

My sister-in-law visited one day and the day she got here was a snow storm. We drove her up to the mountains through a twisty canyon headed towards Rocky Mountain National Park. My car handled amazing the entire way. When we got near RMNP, we ended up turning around because the snow was so deep and coming down so fast that I could not see the road. However, I could still drive in it like I was driving on a dry summer road. I even pulled of the road into the ditch with over 1 foot of snow in it just to stop and look at the elk. No issues getting out at all.

Another time I was in RMNP when there was freezing rain. The road I was on was pure ice and very steep. On the way down the mountain, a Honda Accord was in the middle of the road trying to go up but couldn't go anywhere. I came to a nice stop and then even put it in reverse and just backed right now this icy hill to give them more space. Again, my tires stuck to the road like it was a dry summer day.

I have nothing but good to say about these tires. They are a perfect all season tire. In the summer you'll swear they are a summer tire, but it the winter you'll think they must be a winter tire. I no longer have my WRX but have a GTI instead. The OE tires are good, but when they need replacing I'll be getting these if they are still around. You won't regret purchasing these tires!

These tires came with my Subaru WRX 2014. I'm an experience driver and today, it snowed in MD and I can tell you that these tires do absolutely nothing for the car. Sadly, it was only 1/4" of slush/snow on the road. You can drive around with these tires, but do not expect them to give you great braking abilities or handling in snow; engine braking is definitely needed.

Otherwise, in dry and wet conditions which the tires were made for, I'm sure they do just fine in warmer conditions. Although, if the temperature is colder, on a turn, it feels as though it is struggling with gripping the road.

I've never had good OEM tires on any cars and I would definitely find another set of tires for my vehicle.

Great tire. Took them up to the Tail of the Dragon and was not dissapointed. Tires are very progressive in the feel between grip and no grip. They get louder as you reach the limit. This tire makes finding your limits very easy, mostly because I cant seem to find their limits haha. I have recommended these tires to anyone who will listen. They do not last long though as far as tread. I drive on them daily, but in a very enthusiastic manner, and they will last me exactly 1 year. I have not rotated them and if i do they would last me about a year and a half, but i'm buying a new set this year anyways so i didnt bother to rotate them. (i know, lazy). I still rated them high on treadwear because i expected them to wear fast and they have lasted longer than i thought.

These are definitely the best all season low profile tires I have come across. I have had Nitto, Michelin and Bridgestone tires and these take the cake when it comes to all season low profile tires. They last pretty long to; I have about 20,000-25,000 miles on them and they are at 6-7/32 still. I've driven in all kinds of snow and rain storms and had nothing but confidence. The only thing I can say negatively about these tires is that they have gotten a little loud recently, but if you ask me that is kind of normal for all seasonal tires but they are definitely the quietest snow tire I ever had. I would recommend these tires to anyone who has low pros, drives daily, drives in all kinds of weather and care about the look of the tire.

I purchased this car with OEM Bridgestone summer hi-per tires that were worn out, it was very noisy inside, rough/hard ride, and it tramlined on pavement changes. The seller warned me not to begin winter on these tires. I researched Tire Rack and this new design had the properties I was looking for. I was a little worried as I read some owner feedback about sluggish turn-in and don't expect a summer UHP tire's performance. After putting a set of 4 on the STI, I couldn't be happier! My car was transformed, dramatic lowering of cabin noise, my wife now wants to go in the STI now, vs "it's too loud to talk" from before. Just the quiet cabin would have been plenty, but now the comfort level is also much improved. The car no longer transmits every pebble, bump, imperfection to the driver, now it smooths over the small things, and lessens the pothole impacts. I no longer increase grip pressure on the steering wheel when I encounter a seam in the road, the tires don't tramline and sail over joint in the road without diverting their line. The Hankook's have been great in rain, slush, and 4" of snow, traction and stopping are first rate. They aren't much help on ice, but only a studded tire will help on ice? I am extremely satisfied with the Ventus S1 Noble 2 tires, they have made my STI a joy to drive in everyday use.

I'm having trouble closing the gap between most other reviews, Tire Racks test of this tire, and my experience. Replaced the OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE92's with these and the ride is a little softer and much quieter, but steering response is terrible. I'm seeing few complaints of this in the reviews, and Tire Rack puts steering response as one of the strong points of the tire, but I can drive down the highway, wiggle the steering wheel, and feel the car yaw like a boat. It's a similar feeling to when I drive my parents 12 yr old Buick LeSabre, not really an acceptable driving characteristic in anything in a "performance" category. Outright grip when cornering and braking seems good, but again, any steering inputs mid corner result in a delay while the outside tires load up, then the requested change in direction. Maybe I was spoiled by the rock hard sidewalls of the run-flat Bridgestones, but I find it hard to believe all tires in this category behave like this.

Show Off Your Wheels: Upload Photos to Tire Rack's Photo Gallery

Wednesday, August 21, 2013 by Ben Rooney

We have recently added a feature to our website that allows our customers to upload photos to show off their upgraded vehicles with Tire Rack products, including wheels. When you're shopping for wheels, you will be able to access any customer photos available of the style that you are viewing. You can also view our master photo gallery of both Tire Rack studio photos, as well as customer submissions. We love to see our wheels in their new homes. Photo styles vary from casual snapshots to artfully composed high-resolution images.

One picture that caught my eye while browsing is this image of a black painted Enkei Racing Series RPF1 on a WRX STI. This lightweight, performance oriented wheel is paired with a Dunlop Direzza ZII tire that perfectly complements the mission of the RPF1: going fast and looking good.

The customer has added his or her own custom lug nuts in what looks to be a blue anodized finish, adding a touch of color to the otherwise sober black of the car and wheel. And look at that mirror finish. This Subie seems to have spent plenty of time in 'makeup' getting ready for its glamor shots.

Customers can also include their own story about their wheels, tires and car to go along with the picture. When visiting the Photo Gallery, you can simply click on "Read My Story" to see what the owner has to say about their wheels and tires.

Want to upload your own photos and help other customers with their shopping? Visit our Photo Gallery, check the requirements and start uploading your photo.

Over the years, these are the best all-around V-rated tires for the WRX I have used in terms of performance and comfort. Cornering in both dry/wet conditions are superior to similar model tires. Road noise is less than other brands. The only disappointment I have is the tread life. For a tire rated at 560, They are almost due for replacement at less than 20,000 miles. In this regard, these are no better than the stock, and other Z- W- rated tires.

Before I put on RE-11As I had tons of understeer and very low traction with potenza 970's. Now I can take corners at much higher speeds and don't have to worry about losing traction in the rear. I do not experience understeer unless I am at much higher speeds. At high speeds the tires feel very stable and safe. I would recommend this tire to anyone who is doing autocross.

Love this tire. If you own a Subaru, put these tires on your car. I own three Subies, and they all get wrapped in ExtremeContact DWS as soon as I can. Water evacuation is awesome in shallow or deep road rivers. Road force balanced the tires when they were put on and haven't needed to adjust to date. What they slightly lack in winter (deep winter, regular winter they are great) they make up for in the overall category. Dry sand, wet sand, moist mud, deep sloppy mud, and a mix of manure and mud (on the farm if you haven't figured that out already.) I have not been stuck, stopped, or buried. With a quick flick of the gas pedal to clean the tread they will keep chugging right along with Conti pride!! They have a slight wiggle when cold from sitting overnight outside but after 5-10 min of driving it is business as usual

I use these as winter tires on my WRX. For an all season they are pretty grippy and work well in cold temps. However, they are fairly soft in the corners and do not provide the steering response of a summer tire. I do recommend these for winter tire use in light snow areas. They still retain the majority of the cars sporting characteristics.

This tire is fairly heavy at 28 pounds which can I can feel during acceleration.

My Forester came to me with these tires, so, they being a known decent performer, I bought another set when the first wore out. There hasn't been enough snow to warrant comment on their snow-performance. Wet-weather performance has been quite good, as it has been on dry roads. I haven't pushed the tires hard. The Forester is a sport-utility, even with the turbo engine; it's not a WRX! Road noise and ride are not perfect but pass muster. This tire is, I think, a good choice for the Forester.

Got these for my WRX this winter.... And I have one piece of advice for prospective buyers.. Do not buy if you plan on sliding around in un-plowed parking lots. There is actually TOO MUCH grip in snow. These tires = NO FUN IN THE SNOW.

But if your driving tendencies are a little less spirited than mine I would HIGHLY recommend these to anyone. They are by far the cheapest brand name snow tire on the market. But by NO MEANS does that mean they lack in quality.

Where you will notice the difference immediately: Forward movement. Spinning your tires trying to climb over the city snow plow wake is a thing of the past. Also getting a rolling head-start at a stoplight is no longer needed. Its as if the snow isnt even there.
Where you will notice the difference later: Turning capability in snow. These tires have the best turning traction I have seen. (short of Nokian winter tires.. which are 2-3 times the price of these Generals.)

Last thoughts: If/when you buy these fantastic snow tires. Don't forget to get a couple sizes narrower than the stock spec. Contrary to popular belief, tires the width of a pizza cutter will do EVEN better in snow.

I cant wait to put these on every car I own next winter. Highly Reccomended

This tire is impressive to say the least. It is our first "snow" tire and has made me a believer. I always thought all season tires were just fine but never again. After 5500 miles (in just under 3 months), we just did our first rotation and the wear is very even and minimal. We have made several ski trips with aggressive driving and a 1200 mile road trip with all different kinds of weather and temperatures and they take everything in stride except VERY slush covered roads. When the weather is warm, they tend to make some road noise at slower speeds do to their aggressive nature. If you're looking for snow tires, I would definitely recommend trying these. I thought the price was a little high but it seems to be paying off.

What an awesome snow tire. They were not cheap by any means, but to be able to put something on the car and just drive off and be totally happy off the bat is rare and appreciated! I have no regrets with making this choice. FYI, the day i got them we had snow, and they did ok, just ok, and for a moment i thought i had spent a lot of money for nothing, but a week later we got a foot of snow and it was like night and day - they must have needed a break in period or something. Either way, now i can stop on an incline going downward with little ABS engagement, and turn around and go back up the incline with minimal effort from the AWD. Dont look at anything else, ---- it up and get these tires! :-)

These tires are great so far much better then the Dunlop's that cam on my 2011 Subaru WRX. they made a huge difference in handling with an proper alignment. I am very vigorous on checking inflation rates as well. Dry weather- Hnadles excellent steering response turn-in and driver control/confidence. Wet- Handles great in my opinion drove through plarge puddles with plenty of confidence no hydroplaning in the rain now this might be bias due to the Subaru AWD system(4wheels are always in motion)But over all I like them so far and have owned several Kumho's in the past like the Ecsta and ASX. My favorite were the ASX and I really wanted the 4X this time around but didn't have the budget. So there you go if you want an inexpinsive affordable tire with great control low noise and grip in dry weather and decent in wet weather BUY THIS. If you have the extra money get the KUMHO 4X and Im sure you will be happy.
