Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
May 16, 2012

We recently purchased the Continental tires and had them put on our vehicle in Waco, Texas. We drove home to Canada through torrential rains and really tried out the tires in Wyoming. We never drove below 70 miles/hour and were more than impressed! Most vehicles drove at a snail's pace and we felt very safe staying closely behind a large truck at the indicated speed. Much better than the Kumho that were on the car originally. We also ordered new wheels and snow tires from Tire Rack to put on the car in the Fall and can hardly wait to try these although we expect that the Continentals will be just fine. The wheels were FANTASTIC and very cheap!!! Service form Tire Rack was better than excellent. We are first time customers and will definitely be back, especially since we have children and grand children living in the USA. Our order that was sent to Waco came perfectly on time and the tires + tires/wheels were wrapped-up beautifully. We'll be back Tire rack and Continental. J.H. Lethbridge, Canada.

I'm on my second set of REVO's the first set I had was on a 2wd dodge ram xtended cab longbed. These tires worked great on that truck, I got about 50K miles out of them. Now I have a set on a 98 RAM 4x4, and with regular rotation they should last a while. It's hard to gauge wear because I have snowplow on this truck and I tow a lot, including farm use off road. I don't expect to get 50K with this kind of punishment. These are great in snow, and better than average on ice. Mud is not a problem when in 4 wheel drive. I don't go offroad seeking mud, so my experience is limited to having to go through a sippee hole on the farm that I can't find another way around. Road nosie is slightly noticeable around 45 mph, but at 55 to 75 you can't hear them over the wind noise. The ride is better than average for an all terrain tire. They aren't Michelin's afterall. I bought them for their traction and lack of obscene road noise. The don't seem to adversley impact gas mileage either. I will continue to buy these as long as the driving habbits warrant an all terrain tire. I woudl nto buy these for somethign that never goes off road. I run Michelin LTX M/S2's on the wife's suburban, which never goes off road.

Initial Review, 500 Miles on Tires
April 20, 2012

I just installed these tires within the past few days and have only put just under 500 miles on them. When they arrived, I noticed they were pretty light and had a flexible sidewall considering they were going on a light duty pick-up. This was to be expected since it's technically designed as a passenger car tire. I didn't want to a) spend a lot on a premium tire for my older pick-up and b)want an overly stiff truck tire that would sacrifice the ride. I opted for the Khumo KR21 given the price and both having good personal experience w/ the brand in the past and hearing positive remarks from others... Once the tires were mounted on the truck I was totally pleased. With 32 PSI the sidewalls stayed firm (no sag) and the tires ran very sooth down the highway. They are incredibly quiet, smooth & cushioning, and handle quite well. There is no wander at the wheel. I have had no chance to experience the performance on wet surfaces or in in-climate weather, nor have I had enough time to rate the tread wear. For those of you out there with light pick-ups looking for a decent tire for a reasonable bargain, try the KR21.

Initial Review, 23,000 Miles on Tires
April 14, 2012

Well, I thought that I finally would have a good set of factory tires that would be something that lasted awhile on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was dead wrong! These things are cheap and not made for this vehicle. It could be because it is a cross-over tire that they placed on a Jeep that weighs over 5,000lbs. Then again, that isn't my problem, but the ones who designed and solid these as "great" tires to Jeep. Never, ever spun a tire in light snow in a Jeep before. That is then again, until I had these tires. Also, if it snows over 3 inches beware! The tires load up! I lost the front end of my Jeep in a parking lot with a "slight" grade to it while leaving work.(Embarrassing!) I thought that my four wheel drive wasn't working correctly. It was nothing more than a bad set of tires that caused the problems. If you think that you are going to get good tread life out of this tire, think again! All four tires are worn down to the "replacement bars!" 23,000 miles on these tires!(21,000 miles were on the Interstate) What a joke! And if you are wondering, these tires were rotated every 6,000 miles, and the Jeep was aligned once since it came off of the truck. Still, these things wore like they are designed to be a 25,000 mile tire. Last but not least, the sidewalls to these tires are soft, very soft. You have to over inflate the tires just to get better handling and to stop "roll" when cornering. I am a sportsmen, and do go off road on occasion. However, after seeing the performance of these tires, I would just park next to the side of the road and walk! In my opinion, great tire for a car weighing in around 3,400 lbs. Anything larger than that, with "AWD," or 4x4 should look else where for a more suitable tire.

Initial Review, 35,000 Miles on Tires
April 10, 2012

I knew the minute i drove away from the tire store that i had made a mistake. The tires were shaky when i turned the wheels in the lot. They produce a lot of road noise and they never balaced correctly. Very shaky and unsteady at slow speeds and cornering. Traction is remarkably good for a mud tire on wet and dry paving. However, horrible in snow! I slipped and slip horribly! The big brother for this tire, the Goodyear MTR with Kevlar, rode much better on the road. Four of us in my company bought this tire for our trucks and we all got the same results. We'll never buy again. They do wear good, and have actually gotten smoother with wear and rotating every 5kmiles. The MTR's wore out quickly, so these are much better at wearing. I'm just done with all the shaking and vibrating. Time for some more streetable tires.

Alternative Sizes for the Nissan Murano

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 by Hunter Leffel

Another vehicle that can present some challenges in regards to options for replacement tires is the Nissan Murano. Introduced in 2009, it came equipped with 235/55R20 sized tires. Currently, there are only a few options being offered in the O.E. size.

As an alternate size that'll provide more choices, we recommend 255/50R20. This size is approximately 3/4" wider and a mere 1/5" shorter than the original 235/55R20. We also list 265/50R20 tires as options that'll fit the original wheel without rubbing. This 265/50R20 size is 4/10" wider and taller than the 255/50R20.

Yokohama Parada Spec-X
Yokohama Parada Spec-X
Bridgestone Dueler Alenza
Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza

Between these three sizes, you'll find a variety of options to consider, including the Yokohama Parada Spec-X and Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza

Fast approaching on 20 million miles reported, the Dueler H/L Alenza consistently delivers in all key areas, such as wet and dry traction, ride comfort and longevity. It comes backed with a 65,000-mile treadlife warranty and a 30 Day Buy & Try Guarantee

The Yokohama Parada Spec-X has been at or near the top of the Street/Sport Truck All-Season category for a few years now. With over 5 million miles reported on, you'll see a gain in wet and dry traction over the Bridgestone. While there are other tires available, start your search with these options from Yokohama and Bridgestone as they are two of the most popular options for your Nissan Murano.

Bright Satin Silver Painted Wheels for Your Silver Car, Truck or SUV

Friday, March 9, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

If you've got a silver vehicle that's in need of a little style you should look beyond the standard finishes. Silver wheels are normally too close in hue to your car's silver body color to stand out.

So unless you prefer this look, consider some of these other finishes, such as: chrome, black, grey or dark grey. It would also be worth your time to take a look at a bright satin silver painted finish. A bright satin silver painted finish is created by painting a base grey coat, followed by a brighter silver overcoat, finished with a clearcoat. The net result is a shiny grey finish that offers a perfect contrast with silver.

For a real-life example, view my co-worker Owen's wheel choice on his first-generation (2000) Honda CR-V. After careful consideration, he decided to go with the bright satin silver painted Rial Como.

Rial Como wheels strike a great balance between distinctive looks and continuity. Owen's running the 16" option on his CR-V, but the Rial Como is also available in a 17" diameter.

Are the 225/65-17 tires on your third-generation (2007-2011) Honda CR-V ready to be replaced? If you're considering new wheels, then this is the time to do it. We can mount, balance and deliver them ready to install. Take a look at a set of 17" bright satin silver painted Rial Como wheels on 225/65-17 Michelin Latitude Tour tires at only $1436.*

Initial Review, 8,000 Miles on Tires
March 04, 2012

I downsized in diameter and width for these tires, and it is a good combination for the Audi Quattro. Tire Rack shipped quickly with the wheels I ordered.
Within a month of putting these tires on I got a chance to put them to the test. Calgary was hit with a sudden, disastrous snow storm at evening rush hour, with all city roads freezing over and not a sanding truck in sight. Unfortunately I had to go out in this---to pick up my wife who was stranded in her car with its all-seasons. Major arteries heading north out of the downtown core were closed due to wrecks and stalled vehicles, so I had to try a hill on a side street. An AWD SUV had slipped sideways about ¼ of the way up this hill so I had to wait until bystanders got it turned around. I was a little apprehensive as this hill is quite steep, and usually closed with any kind of ice or snow. It starts out fairly flat but then the grade increases sharply about halfway up. I gave the car some gas and....it climbed right up the hill without the traction control even coming on! I couldn't believe it. Felt a bit like the Audi commercial on the ski ramp (which I might almost believe now). Spent the next 2 hours winding through back alleys and dodging wrecked vehicles getting to my wife, and then back home. I immediately concluded that these were the best snow tires I have ever owned.
I followed this trial with a run through a deep snow drift about two weeks later in one of Calgary's unplowed industrial parks. I thought for sure I was going to hang right up in it, but the Audi clawed right through for almost a half block. I measured the snow at 20" deep afterwards!

Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
March 06, 2012

I installed these in size 265/70/17(non-studded)for winter mountain pass driving in a lifted 4Runner. Being in Seattle, we don't get much snow, but we've got our few occasional snow storms where we'll get 8-20" over a couple days. During these storms, the roads are poorly maintained as the city lacks the plowing equipment for these days.

First and only major storm we got this year - I was out trying to get stuck on steep hills in 2WD to see how a rear wheel drive vehicle handles snow/ice with winter tires. Like all 2WD cars, you obviously still have to take it easy from a stop to not get excessive tire spin, but these tires do an excellent job at grabbing for whatever traction is available. The only places I got stuck in 2WD were the steepest of hill grades in the Ballard area. We're talking neighborhood hills that people push their bicycles up and kids would sled/snowboard down when its snowing. Once I kicked the truck into 4WD, there was absolutely no slippage and I climbed right up and could go back down safely without ever engaging ABS. In fact, the ABS almost never turns on when I'm in snow/ice unless I'm trying to lock up on purpose. When 4WD is engaged, I could accelerate from stoplights as if it were dry pavement. All in all, I will say my favorite aspect about these tires is the ability to maintain control at all speeds and to stop a car on a dime on compact snow/ice in a fraction of the distance of what my Destination All Terrains can do.

Deep snow traction - I've taken my 4Runner snow wheeling into 1-2ft of powder in eastern Washington and Idaho. They are superb, but definitely have to be careful to go into bumper deep snow as these tires will dig as far as they can go to get traction which can cause me to high center and get stuck.
I've also used these tires in 205/55/16 on a 2005 Mazda 3 Hatch with the same great results.

After 4000 miles, treadwear looks minimal for driving down mostly wet streets/highways.

With respect to light truck performance Perfect dry handling and almost perfect wet handling. As for off roading haven't had any problems... these tires have been great and with them haven't really needed to switch into 4 wheel drive. They are pretty expensive but you get what you pay for. Balanced and rotated ever 6k miles and after 43k miles I might be able to squeeze another 35k out of them!

February 02, 2012

I bought these as a wheel/tire combo about three years ago, this is my work truck ( residential renovations contractor ) the OEM tires and wheels were horrendous in the wet/dry/snow, the entire truck would oscillate port to starboard when under a normal load of 1 passenger and a bed full of tools, table saw, ladders on rack and various tools ( approx 4 to 500 pounds ) I must add a set of heavy duty tubular racks and a full fiberglass cap.
Since these tires were installed on the truck, it has been like night and day, predictable under load, fairly quiet, much more so than the OEM.
Granted because of their width, there is some floating on snow and some hydroplaning thru deep water puddles but since that is a constant with wide shoes, it always has to be taken into consideration when driving in inclement weather which we in NE CT most definitely get our share.......
I plan on repurchasing these in the very near future....Just for giggles, I have had a SS screw stuck in one for over a year, it has not leaked ( which says something about the internal construction of these excellent tires )
good in the snow,

Initial Review, 2,000 Miles on Tires
February 25, 2012

My 2009 Toyota Highlander came with Bridgestone Dueler 400 size 245/55/19 tires. These tires were very unimpressive. At 40,000 miles they were more than ready to be replaced.
Since we drive cross country from Georgia to Pennsylvania (visiting grandchildren) we needed to get some good quality all season tires. I was surprised to find that the choices of tires in this size were limited and a number of the tires available were not particularly rated very well. I looked for the top rated tires made by a Korean company but they were not available in my area. So finally after looking at reviews decided to go with the Bridgstone 422 Duelers. These tires were sold as fuel savers. Within a week of our purchase we left for a trip to Pa. I must say we were very impressed with the smooth and quiet ride. During the trip we experienced snow, ice, rain and just about every kind of winter weather found in North Western Pa. and upstate New York. Generally the roads had been treated, but it was a good test for our new tires. Except for one instance where I detected a little slippage coming down the mountain from Philipsburg, Pa. the tires performed well. The truck in front of us not so lucky flipped over. Of course it helps a lot to have front wheel drive and operate at a safe speed. We probably had some improved fuel savings on the trip but I wouldn't pay a premium for it since it was probably not huge. We only have about 2000 miles on the tires so we have to wait to see what tread life is. At least they are rated at 65000 miles. I don't believe the Bridgestone 400 Duelers are even rated. So in conclusion so far I am very pleased with my 422's. Back on flat ground in Georgia they are running smooth and quiet.

Michelin X-Ice Xi2: Second Season Review

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by Gary Stanley

My first impression of the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 can be found in my blog post "My Story on Winter Tires." The tires are well into their second winter season, and despite the relatively fair winter weather this year, we received some significant snowfalls that could have created some very tricky driving conditions. Fortunately, my Michelin X-Ice Xi2 winter / snow tires are still going strong.

For my 2009 Infiniti G37x, I was limited to the 225/50R18 size. I have always used Bridgestone Blizzak tires as my previous winter / snow tire set-up, but the tires are not made for my car. A bit hesitant, my fears turned out to be completely unfounded in regards to the Michelin X-Ice Xi2.

In addition to driving on ice and snow-covered roads, I've had the opportunity to drive extensively on slush, wet and dry roads thanks to winter's unseasonably warm weather. The tires are still smooth and quiet riding on both dry and wet roads and feel very much like an all-season tire. When the road conditions are snowy or ice covered, I have all the traction that I need to drive with confidence. I haven't felt any reduction in ice or snow traction during this second season on the tires.

Don't just take my word for it, here are what some of our customers have said about the Michelin X-Ice Xi2 :

"Excellent tire. I have purchased Michelin winter tires and summer tires for at least 12 years. The Xi2 is one of the best winter tire models I have purchased within that time. They are great on dry roads, low noise, good steering as compared to most winter thread. But the best comments are on the winter roads. Great traction in slush and ice, very minimal hydroplane, good braking. They will not fail you in a Western New York lake effect snow storm. If you are undecided on winter tires... you must try the Xi2. I am not a Michelin salesmen...sometimes you buy some thing you really enjoy sharing about." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2002 Toyota RAV 4.

"Working as a real estate appraiser in Northwest Rural Michigan, I drive every conceivable road and gradiant; from sand two-tracks to the state's famous 55mph pothole special, two lane state thoroughfares. Recently, I had a 150 mile day with side roads of glare ice (road crowns, uphill) astonishing traction, anti slip control never went on. I have never had so much as a wheel slip on my wife's Quattro in snow. Faultless on slight to moderate snow, solid even in slush. The truck never would have made it that day and I prefer it over my F-350 (Michelin LTX A2) in all but the deepest sand or snow conditions, but can't usually pry it away from my wife." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 Audi A4.

"The high ratings are in the context of these being dedicated snow tires. In deep snow (4-6 inches) my rear drive M3 can easily out accelerate front drivers from a stand still. I have been using this model tire for the last 5 winters. They are great when it gets icy; quiet for snow tires." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2002 BMW M3.

Keep driving fun and invest in some great winter / snow tires.

Initial Review, 50000 Miles on Tires
February 02, 2012

These tires are the best I've ever equipped my truck with. I'm in need of buying my 4th set and the truck has 155,000 miles on the clock. Job sites, beach, snow, blizzards... I've never been stuck. Not so good in sand but neither is the long wheel base, diesel, manual. The softer rubber lends itself to quicker wear than a hard rubber but the grip on snow and ice is phenomenal. The deep tread is noisy but so is the diesel so who cares. I'm thinking of putting them on my wife's Volvo XC70 to dress it up a bit.

Initial Review, 68000 Miles on Tires
February 02, 2012

I put these tires on my 1999 Chevy Tahoe (2 door) in May, 2009 at around 150,000 miles. Now, in February, 2012 it has 218,000 miles on it, and these tires still have some tread life left (albeit only about 2,000 miles). I rotate every other oil change and keep them balanced religiously with good, epoxyed-on weights on the inside side of the factory 5 spoke wheels. I've had BFG A/T's (old style) on a 1999 Ford Explorer, and these are as good, if not better, than those were. These tires stick to the road in rain, which is one of my biggest concerns when purchasing tires. I have a small sidewall gash in one, and a small nail in the tread of another (which I discovered last week), and they just keep going. They ride just a little bit rough (I believe they are 6 ply all around), but that minor inconvenience is a price I will pay any day for the durability and safety these tires provide. I have not noticed any road noise issues. Offroad, they are unbeatable. I have never gotten stuck in them, and rarely have to use 4 wheel drive going anywhere-not so for my friends with skimpier tires. Taking into account that they are 1/2 the price of BFG A/T's, these have to be the best value in tires, and the best tires, I have ever owned. I will put them on every truck or SUV I own from now on.

Wheel Spotlight: KMC XD Series Rockstar

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 by Ben Rooney
KMC XD Series RockstarThe Rockstar has been one of the most popular wheels in the KMC XD Series lineup. Its classic five-spoke design combines with a deeply concave face and unique 'floating' center cap for a look that is both distinctive and aggressive. Having seen these wheels on trucks in our parking lot, I can definitely say they stand out.

Available to fit a wide variety of trucks and SUVs, the wheel's wide widths and negative offsets are available to accommodate many lifted applications with oversized tires. It is available in diameters up to 24" and widths as wide as 12". Not all widths and diameters will be available for every vehicle application, but there are a broad range of fitments from which to choose.

The wheel also comes in a version for dually pickups. Read a prior blog post of mine for details on custom wheels for dually trucks, as well as a photo of the Rockstar in the dually version. That version has a somewhat different appearance due to unique fitment requirements.

Besides the black painted version shown above, the Rockstar is also available in a chrome and machined with black accent finish. As with any of our wheels, you can shop by vehicle to see which truck rims are available to fit your application.
