Absolutly orrible on snow. The tire groove ate on the wrong direction. It look more as rain tire than snow tire. I bought the car used, and had those tires on. I am glad I got them off the car and replace by real snow tire.

Initial Review, 40,000 Miles on Tires
January 22, 2013

After a few disappointing Goodyear purchases, I changed my brand to Yokohamas. It has proven to be a great choice. This set of tires went on a car with approximately 160,000mi on it. I wasn't sure which would last longer- the car or the tires. Now, almost 40,000mi later, it looks like the tires are going to win. With proper rotation, these tires work great on rainy roads and super hot summer highways. We haven't had as much snow as usual the last few winters but what we have had has not been any trouble for the AVIDs on a rear wheel drive coupe. I really notice a difference in the breaking distance, too. I feel confident in traffic and sudden stops. That was something I gave up on with my last set of Goodyears. When driving "spiritedly" the Yokos have kept to the road instead of any lose feeling I've gotten with a previous brand. The tread life has been incredible. I expect I'll get very close to 50,000mi out of them- a distance I haven't had from tires in at least my last two tire purchases over 6yrs. I would definitely recommend Yokohama AVID Envigors to any small car owner. I'm thinking of replacing my Benz with a newer Volvo S40 and will definitely put the Yokos on that car when its time.

Incredible tire. Just drive through a blizzard - I am stunned how fast and safe I could drive. All 311HP was easy to use in controllable fashion. Last year I just drove through some snow and icy roads and I was happy with my purchase. When driving on dry road Blizzaks are QUIET like Michelin Primacy MXV4 on my Lexus LS430. And Volvo XC90 is not a quiet car, but it is with Blizzaks on. Bumps are muted, road noise is not present. My summer Goodyears are more noisy than Blizzaks.
Money well spent. Thank you TireRack South Band Warehouse.

I had no intention of using these Tires in the snow, but due to my own laziness to get my Blizzaks on. I was driving during the 'Draco' blizzard - thru drifts, and on packed snow/ice- they handled superbly! I've used two sets of these tires on my Pontiac vibe also, excellent wet weather handling. When they wear out, I will replace them with the same!

I live in Montreal Canada. Our winters are harsh to say the least. I used to commute 45 miles per day, half the year in snow/icy winter. I've purchased 5 sets for the following cars: civic, volvo s60, hyundai santa fe, BMW 328xi and my infiniti G37x.
My driving style is very aggressive starts but not at top speeds because I've gotten my fair share of tickets. These suit my needs pretty well because I don't expect to drive faster than the 160km/h (100mph) it is rated for in the winter. Other cars clearly don't have tire because if they did, they wouldn't stay stuck in the snow or at the light as I ease past them.

We do a lot of driving in the snow and this tire has pulled the car through some deep drifts passing stuck suv's with their all season tires along the way. This is our second set on this car. The traction is absolutely worth the slight negative which is hard cornering on dry pavement where it feels like the sidewalls may be somewhat softer than I am used to with summer tires.

We just got a st of these tires. Have been wanting to try them ever since they came available. Our 2nd set of Michellin OEM's had finally wore out (got about 50,000 on each set), but wanted a better handling tire, and one that would work in snow for trips to Lake Tahoe. So far the tires are excellent. Better steering response and handling than OEM's. Much better road feel (poor California roads) don't seem to affect them. Less noise than OEM's. Overall one of the best tires I have ever used on the Volvo XC90 V8. Will report back after summer and update rain and snow handling. So far I am very pleased with these tires.

This tire is the OEM for the 2008 Ford Focus SES. After 27,000 miles, the tires still have a significant amount of tread remaining and I have not been the most diligent in rotating them. So far I have been very pleased with the tires and really enjoy the responsive handling in both wet and dry conditions. The tires have also been very good in light snow conditions, and the one time I was in a heavy snow storm, they performed much better than expected. I read the other reviews, and folks with Audis and ,Volvos seem to have issues with this tire. Maybe these tires are geared more for smaller cars. At least with the Focus they work very well. When it comes time to replace them, I would consider the same tire, or more likely, opt for the newer version, the P6 Four Season Plus.

I replaced the dry rotted Michelin's with these DWS tires. At first, I was disappointed in the tires' response in turns. I have had these tires for quite some time now, and I have to say they are great. I used them through extreme conditions. With 36 pounds, and heavy duty shocks, these tires have hit massive pot holes and have resisted bubbles and punctures. In that sense, to have a reliable tire to use on poor roads, these are it!

235/65R17 Tires for Your Volvo XC90

Tuesday, November 13, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

In the United States, Volvo made a big change to their game plan by discontinuing the V70 station wagon to focus on the XC70 Cross Country and XC90.

XC90 drivers like the fact they're getting the combination of safety and versatility in an SUV. If there's one quibble, it's a pattern of very average tire wear. Perhaps it's a combination of a higher center gravity and suspension dynamics, but whatever the root causes, many SUV/CUV vehicles wear their tires markedly faster compared to a sedan of similar mass. Therefore, XC90 drivers should also look at wear relative to cost so they can lower their treadwear cost per mile.

Be sure to check your tire size as Volvo used both 235/65R17 and 235/60R18 as Original Equipment. The best choice for your vehicle will depend on the weather conditions you encounter. If you're running the 235/65R17 size and need an all-season option to use year-round, consider the following options:

235/65-17 General Grabber HTS $152*
General Grabber HTS
$152*
235/65-17 Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 $158*
Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia $158*
235/65-17 Goodyear CS Assurance TripleTred All-Season $169*
Goodyear Assurance CS TripleTred All-Season $169*

The General Grabber HTS stands out to me because of its wet grip capabilities. It was designed to combine style, comfort, durability and performance in a tire that offers pleasant road manners and a long life, in addition to year-round traction, including in light snow.

When testing the Bridgestone Dueler H/L422 Ecopia, I found it to offer average traction in wet conditions. The tire does provide handling and comfort with a reduced environmental impact. Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia tires are designed to enhance vehicle fuel economy by reducing tire rolling resistance along with the vehicle's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions while delivering year-round all-season traction.

Goodyear's Assurance CS TripleTred All-Season's predecessor, the Fortera TripleTred, was successfully used by many Snowbelt drivers. This newer model displayed good emergency handling and decent wet grip during our tests. CS TripleTred All-Season tires feature three unique zones designed to provide all-season traction in dry, wet and wintry conditions.

Installing a set of winter / snow tires is the best option if you experience harsh winter conditions. If you reside in an area where all-season tires are what you need, keep these three options in mind as you search for a combination of treadwear, road manners, wet grip and light snow grip. Getting the right tire will help make your XC90 that much safer.

Excellent winter tire for the money. Transformed my rear wheel drive Volvo wagon into a snow machine. I have much more confidence driving in the winter than with any all season tire. We see a wide variation of winter weather in Kentucky so its nice to feel prepared for anything. These tires definitely aren't as responsive as a summer or all season tire, but that is to be expected and it isn't a safety issue as long as the rest of your suspension is in order.

I had a hard time finding tires that would last on my Volvo XC90. I went through my last set in 15,000 miles. I guess the XC90 is heavy and hard on tires. These Yokohama tires have lasted beautifully and after 25,000 miles are still handling beautifully. They just got my precious family of 5 back home on an extremely rainy night where some roads were flooded. The car didn't hyrdroplane at all and handled great. I am about to buy another set of these exact same times.

I've got these on my VW GTi and Volvo 850. I would say that these perform as expected, except in just normal rainy situations. I have a supercharged VR6 and I know that I can't expect to accelerate hard on these, but in stopping situations it lacks some grip that I thought should be there. On both the Volvo and VW you have to be careful not to jab the brakes or the wheels will lock up and slide. So, you have to get used to how they respond on slightly wet surfaces. Other than that, the ride is great, and the traction in the snow is amazing. I live in a hilly area and I have no issues navigating to my destination, especially in deep snow.

Studdable Winter / Snow Tires: General AltiMAX Arctic and Firestone Winterforce

Friday, November 2, 2012 by Ben Rooney

While most of the new developments in winter / snow tire technology are in the Studless Ice & Snow performance category, studdable snow tires remain a solid option for winter driving. Studdable winter tires tend to have a little longer treadlife than their studless counterparts, and are often some of the best-priced options in a given size. The combination of long wear and low cost make them an excellent choice for drivers needing a value-oriented winter solution.

The two most common tires in this category are the General AltiMAX Arctic and Firestone Winterforce. These tires come in a variety of sizes and are even offered in some LT versions that are rated for 3/4- and 1-ton vehicles. Both are very capable in the snow, and have received excellent reviews from our customers.

Take a look at what customers are saying about their experience with the General AltiMAX Arctic:

"I used the General AltiMAX Arctic tires on my 2008 Honda Fit Sport for three winters in upstate New York, two of which had significant snowfall. These tires exceeded my expectations and provided excellent traction and control. With these snow tires, I was able to drive in heavy snow and on some very icy roads with no difficulty. I highly recommend these tires for the Honda Fit." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2008 Honda Fit Sport

"Excellent winter tire for the money. Transformed my rear-wheel drive Volvo into a snow machine. I have much more confidence driving in the winter than with my all-season tires. We see a wide variation of winter weather in Kentucky so it's nice to feel prepared for anything." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 1991 Volvo 940 SE

Also, check out what drivers are saying about the capabilities of the Firestone Winterforce in winter conditions:

"Unbelievable difference from all-season tires. I live in a Pittsburgh neighborhood where we need to climb a substantial hill to get home. If it snows any considerable amount, my neighbors are parking their cars and walking. I climb right up the hills and have no problem getting home. Very impressed! Nice job, Firestone!" -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2009 Honda Accord Sedan EX 4cyl

"These Winterforce tires have worked superbly on our 2002 Volvo S40. We live in Maine so there is plenty of snow and ice and they work great in all of it. Excellent tire at a very good price." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2002 Volvo S40

Studdable tires are sold without studs by default. Customers who want additional ice traction can opt to add studding for $15 per tire. Some areas do not allow the use of studs, or restrict their use to certain times of year, so make sure to check your local regulations before ordering tires with studs installed. For more information on studded tires, read "Studded Tires for Winter Driving."

This has been a great tire. I have had many sets of Pirellis, (mostly Scorpions), and have always liked them but have found the treadlife to be disappointingly short. However, these Pirellis have been different! On my AWD V8 Volvo I am going to achieve 40,000 miles on a set of four. I have been good about inflation and rotation and that has paid me back with what I think is very good treadlife for a high-performance tire. I will buy again!
