Initial Review, 15,000 Miles on Tires
August 27, 2011

In February 2010, I purchased these tires. They arrived after the mid-Atlantic region received over 25 inches of snow in 2 days and expecting 30 inches more the upcoming weekend. Luckily, I was able to get them installed Friday because Thursday, I waited for 4 hours and they told me they couldn't do it. On Friday, I went to a different place.

Anyway, these tires are the best. They are noisy and I expected them to be noisy because of the tread pattern. Occasionally, the noise gets annoying but the safety and reliability is worth the noise. From rain to snow to ice, I swear by these tires. They tackled last years blizzard without any hesitation.

Right now, Hurricane Irene is in the Mid-Atlantic area. If for some reason I had to go out and save a life or something, I am relying on my Geolanders. I know they will bring me home safely whether there is sun, rain, snow, or ice.

Go buy them now!

Don't know why I am not asked in the questionnaire for dirt, sand and stones review when one fifth of our driving on the Volvo XC90 AWD 320 Diesel is on aggressive gravel and light mud roads. The Conti CrossContact LX20 Ecoplus has been a marvel, after going through two sets of original tires. It performs beautiful in the mountain curvy highways leading from San José, Costa Rica to the lowlands, even in wet conditions. In the Guanacaste lowlands the speed is up to 160 kph and the braking and turning ability is marvelous.
Once on the aggressive gravel roads towards Punta Islita the tires behave superb and have not had a flat, an old habit with the original ones.
After 20,000 kms the tires show no wear or tear. Definitely recommend for anyone combining both highway and gravel surfaces.

I have General Altimax HP's on three vehicles now (Cadillac Deville, Volvo S80 & VW Passat W8) & am very impressed on all fronts. The Caddy was recently driven from the east coast back to WI during the last bout of winter storms & the Generals had me sure footed on ice & through snow. They also held the big cruiser on the road through the mountain curves of PA, VA & WV, there were times I was pushing it a bit hard into them & the Generals never protested. I am sure there are better tires out there, but for the price & dependability thus far on three vehicles I'll definetly purchase them again & again.

Initial Review, 30,000 Miles on Tires
February 17, 2014

I've had these tires on my car about 2 years now and have driven them thru 2 Michigan winters with lake effect snows. I have put about 30,000 miles on them and rotated them only once. They are still perfectly balanced and have half their tread left. I have to say, this is the first set of tires I've ever had that I can say that about after that many miles. Treadwear is very impressive.

As for handling and traction, I have been happy with that as well. It's pretty easy these days to find a tire that is good in 3 seasons for traction. These are no different in that category. They have excellent dry traction, are responsive, and very predictable when pushed hard. Wet traction is just as excellent. It starts getting a bit harder to find tires that excel in heavy rains. To get a tire with excellent resistance to hydroplaning, you quickly leave the lower quality tires behind. These most definitely fit into the upper realm of quality in the wet. I've tried and it's almost impossible to get these things to hydroplane or feel like they are overwhelmed by the water.

What is most impressive is the way they handle in light snow, slush, and ice. You really wouldn't think they would be all that great, but somehow they manage to be really good in light snow, pretty good and very predictable on ice, and excellent in slush. For deep snow, forget about it though. The tread just doesn't have any of the chunky blocks needed when the snow gets serious. Better to go with a winter tire for snows like that. We are currently 1 inch away from being in the top 10 snowiest winters ever in southern Michigan and these tires have done an amazing job this year. Even with only half the tread remaining, they haven't let me down. I think next winter I will probably get dedicated snow tires, but have no problem recommending these for snowy areas. If you want the best in quality and 4 season performance, these are hard to beat.

Initial Review, 500 Miles on Tires
February 20, 2014

Even with only 500 miles rolled off the tread, I can immediately tell that these tires are my new favorite. The online test result information and other reviews rate this tire far above it's price range and I concur. That is value.
We have snow, ice and rain on the ground right now and the tires did better than any Michelin I normally buy. My Volvo 240 wagon is getting old and I didn't want to spend so much for my regular tire, so I bought these after a lot of research. This is my first Tire Rack purchase as well. I am so pleased with both the merchant and the merchandise!
Now, I have been driving a Volvo 240 wagon every day for 25 years. So, I know exactly what differences the tire makes in ride, handling, acceleration, and braking. This General Altimax RT43 is as good as it gets for all-around, all-season value in a tire. Even the tread depth is a better 12/32nds.
I normally put a smaller than original tire size on my wagon due to availability issues. This time I put the largest tire that would comfortably fit. My speedometer is only off by one mph, but the benefit is a much smoother roll, higher ground clearance, and slightly better fuel economy (but at a cost of slightly reduced acceleration).
I expected this taller tire to have more front end roll from the taller sidewall and new tread, but it didn't. Another reason to love this tire.
Another review is in order after a few thousand miles, but, for first impressions, these tires did not disappoint.
Oh yeah, they look great, too.

These tires are great in the snow. I got caught in a sudden snow storm in PA and these tires were unstoppable. I was passing cars, trucks & SUVs that were stuck without a single problem. Last year with my "all-season" tires I couldn't even make it up my driveway with a dusting of snow. Given that I bought these tire for their snow & ice handling I am very pleased.

As far as handling is concerned, I've noticed these tire feel slightly softer than my other tires but then these are on 16" wheels vs 18" wheels. I don't drive aggressively so I haven't noticed any degradation under normal driving conditions. So far there is no road noise to speak of and performance on wet roads has been excellent.

Given that these are WINTER tires and if you are buying them you are looking for winter performance I think they are fabulous. I don't know why people stopped buying winter tires.

2013-2014 Chicago winter! record snow fall and cold. The OEM Continental tires with 7/32

My car came with a set of the equivalent Continentals when I got my 2009 Volvo XC70 T6. The Pirellis are superior in every respect. First off, the Continentals only lasted 25,000 miles. I now have the same mileage on the Pirellis and have MUCH tread left on them. The Pirellis are also MUCH, MUCH better than the Continentals on light snow, slush, and ice. PLUS, the Pirellis are quieter and ride better.

Before i used muchelin, continental, not cheap tires but honestly i WILL not spend money on those brands, this General tire is simple amazing in all the areas. I use them also on my S80 AWD V8 which is the general g-max. I used PS2 michelin on that car, to fragile for my taste, the general gave me much more mpg and resist bad roads much better.

Initial Review, 800 Miles on Tires
February 17, 2014

This is an initial review and first impression. I'll post more detail when we rack up more miles. Most initial reviews tend to be relative, meaning the first impression tends to be based on comparison to the previous tires. These PureContacts (235/50/18 97V) replaced OEM Michelin Latitude Tour HP tires, which performed well with good tread life, even tread wear, and quiet ride. Their primary downfall was less than secure handling in winter conditions.

Out of the gate, these Continentals are very good. The ride is quiet, at least as quite or more so than the Michelins. They ride firm as a new tire, but not excessively so. We've driven them in light snow and wet conditions with no problems. Steering response is noticeably improved, but this is a Volvo with the comfort chassis and it's never going to be sporty.

I researched tires in great detail for weeks and went back and forth before choosing these tires. In the end, there were two tie breakers: the 60-day buy and try guarantee plus the consistent reviews and tests showing this tire has excellent handling in wet and light snow. It didn't hurt that these also were the least expensive of the top rated grand touring all season tires. For a family car, it's important for a tire to earn its keep when you need it most, which is during poor weather conditions and emergency braking. This has been a great choice so far.

Initial Review, 1,000 Miles on Tires
December 26, 2013

Have owned this car for about 7 years and this vehicle has always been terrible in the snow even with brand new all seasons. Various tire shops had tried to convince me to install a set of winter tires and I always thought they were just trying to sell me something I didn't need. Well this Fall in Minnesota the snow came earlier than normal and finally decided to try winter tires. Purchased 4 used rims from a Volvo salvage yard in Wisconsin and bought a set of 4 General Altimax Arctic tires and Wow! the difference is like night and day!! This FWD car just goes through the snow as if it were an All Wheel Drive vehicle. Easily plowed through 5-6 inches of snow without any difficulty. As an experiment stopped on my uphill driveway with about 4 inches of fresh snow on it. Then started again the tires didn't even spin they just grabbed and off it went. Even with new all seasons there is no way this car would have done that. It would have sat there and spun and the only way I might have made it up the hill would have been to back down and make several runs at it. Great tires for winter, worth every penny, totally satisfied!!

If you are a fan of the Gislaved Nordfrost tire, but you either can't find them or they are too expensive, look no further. This IS the Nordfrost III tire as cast with the General Tire brand.

Anyone who knows about the Volvo 780 Bertoné knows it is a fair weather car. But with these tires (studded) I am fully confident again in winter driving. These replaced my Toyo snow tires which had horrible damp/moist road traction. More than one I had sever oversteer in cornering with VERY light throttle. With these Generals, the exact same corner with similar or even wetter conditions held up much better.

I had these studded and to be honest with the windows open at slow speeds, it sounds like one is driving on a gravel road. But the satisfaction of mounting a crest with a RWD vehicle while others even with AWD are foundering makes me feel like I made the right choice.

I chose studded tires as part of my daily commute includes an area prone to black ice that does not get salted as it adjoins a watershed. The Toyos were "okay" with their "walnut embedded grit" but the studded tires are superior.

Best of all, in stopping these actually allow my older ABS system to function even in snow. Cornering performance is also much improved. It's all good that you can "go" in snow, but stopping and avoiding is just as important. Something many people tend to forget when deciding what tires to choose for snow. IMO, All-Season tires are *NOT* adequate replacements for snow tires.

Note to those interested in studding. They are noisy. If you are sensitive to road noise, or do not live in a salt restricted area with a lot of frozen run-off, you probably don't need to stud the tires. BUT, they do make a difference in emergency stopping.

Another note, if these are using the same tread compound as Nordfrost tires, you really need to stop using them if temperatures are averaging above 40-50° otherwise they can wear out faster than expected.

Definitely like these tires so far. They replaced a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and have way more grip in the dry and wet. These are all season tires and for these tires the compromise is grip in snow. The R is big and heavy and these tires don't do much to help it stop and turn in the snow (it accelerates fine due to the AWD). I definitely knew this before purchasing this tire as the car is not driven in the snow often, and I prefer the dry/wet grip for spirited driving.

I just placed an order for the new set of Geolandars.

I really had a lot of fun on track days. They perform very well once they warm up, they maintain a very good grip even on a light slide. Good cornering. On light snow and ice they are terrible. I am, for the first time, considering a set of winter tires. I kept looking a other cars to see if they were having the same problems I did, just to keep it strait on an unsalted, 1/2-inch snow layer.

Had these tires for 25,000 So. Florida miles, so hot/humid sub-tropics. Moved to NYC metro area and made huge mistake replacing Dueler Alenzas with Toyos (at Volvo dealer suggestion) but they rolled so badly when make sharp lateral movements that the accident or rollover potential was quite real. Quickly replaced with Duelers and have now driven in snow. WOW!! Don't know what I was thinking---these tires are as awesome in the cold as in extreme heat. Perfectly suited for a big heavy boring Volvo XC90. Only issue is wear: they only lasted 25K in FL with no frequent enough rotations. I expect more tread life up north. Would put no other tire on this car, these drive so quietly and comfortably.

I'm writing this review because I just drove up my hill (pretty steep) in a little more than an inch of snow and these tires are barely useable in this weather, my Polepositions were actually better. The ride with the Serenitys are much better as far as harshness with hitting bumps and they are quieter something than can be a little more important to you when you own a convertible. They are not as good in the wet as the Bridgestone Polepositions or Michelin Pilot Sports but they are decent. They do corner in the dry fairly well again they are softer than the other two.

I bought a set of these on sale at $78ea, I have to say the Dunlops proved to be ecellent tres overall, with their weakest ponts being treadwear and wet traction, both of whch were still quite good for a soft compound performance-oriented winter tire. At the time of purchace I lived on a diet back road on a mountain and worked at a ski resort, which required some highway driving to reach as well. The dunlops perforned admirably in foul weather, offering confident grip on both light snow and icy roads, and with the ability to churn through 8+ inch deep snow successfully, the AWD didn't hurt them in this capacity, but it was, none theless an excellent performance. Dry road performance was more than adequite, offering low-noise, decent grip and a compliant ride. Driving mountain roads every day I did notice that turn-in, especially on my heavy volvo could have been better, and the sidewalls did feel a little squishy in aggressive conering, but the performance was good enough for me to leave them on for the summer, which is what killed them. Don't run these tires as an all season. I ran them well past reasonable treadwear, and they resisted hydroplaning quite well, but at the end it wasnt the tire's fault they were just worn beyond their useful life. If you driive winter highways and secondary roads the So Wintersport 3D is agreat choice, offering excellent foul weather performance and a real step-up in dry-road performance versus other extreme duty rated snow tires I've owned. Take them off in the summer and they should give you plenty of excellent winter performance. -i replaced them with a used pair of Wintersport IV's, which were a genuinely aggressive dry road tire, and still managed excellent snow performance, perhaps not quite as good as the 3Ds, but they were even gummier, and already partly worn when I got them, which made for exceptionaly short tread lfe, less than 15,000 miles.

January 24, 2014

I've owned a lot of cars and a lot of different tires: Michelin, Dunlop, Continental, Pirelli, Semperit, Bridgestone, Falken, Goodyear, BF Goodrich, Firestone, Uniroyal. The only tires I've ever owned that were a close match to these were a set of Semperit M-401's I owned back in the late 70's. I put these tires on my front drive Volvo S60. I drive fairly hard and I have yet to get a squeal out of these on a curve on dry pavement. The car is like it's on rails. Very solid on wet roads where they feel almost as secure as on dry pavement. I've experienced no indication of hydroplaning. They will lose traction a bit when starting up quickly on wet pavement, but squeal almost like they would on dry pavement when doing so. We've been having a bit of a wild winter here in the mid-atlantic and I've gotten caught out in some fairly substantial snow several times over the past few weeks. A couple of times I've had to stop on steep hills behind other cars that have gotten stuck. In every case I've been able to wait for traffic to clear and drive right around the stuck car(s) with little effort, at times having to use the uncleared shoulder to get through. They aren't snow tires, but they're darned close. These replaced a set of Michelins and I've seen no noticeable change in fuel economy, but the car noticeably rides and handles better. Compared to the Michelins they replaced these tires seem to ride more smoothly over small imperfections, but slighty more harshly over large bumps and potholes. They are very quiet. I'm not able to rate tread life as I've only had them for a couple of thousand miles, but I am so impressed that I wanted to get this review out on the web for the benefit of others. Highly recommended.
