Lost Center Caps?

Wednesday, September 8, 2010 by Chad Hocker
This morning I received an email from a customer who had purchased Sport Edition F2 wheels for his 2003 Ford Windstar and needed some replacement center caps. A quick search online or a phone call and Tire Rack can get you what you need. Here's how the conversation went:

Question
I bought a set of 16-inch Sport Edition F2 wheels with Yokohama tires. The center cap has fallen off one of the wheels and was lost on some highway in California. Is it possible to get the center cap that says Sport Edition on it??

Answer
Yes, we can get you a cap. They are priced at $6 each plus shipping. Give me a call and we'll get your cap on the way or you can order Sport Edition Center Caps online. What you need is at the bottom of the list (sorry, no photo is available at this time).

If you have Sport Edition wheels or an ASA wheel or any other wheel we carry, check out our website to find your center cap or any other optional hardware you may need.

Imput your vehicle year make and model then select the wheel you need the hardware for and click the optional harware tab to select the center caps.

Inexpensive Wheels for Winter Use

Friday, September 3, 2010 by Cooper
When it comes to winter driving, there is no substitute for a winter / snow tire. Winter driving is all about confidence, and while there are a couple of all-season tires out there that will provide superior winter performance, they still emphasize longer wear, a quieter ride or greater performance...not winter traction. Winter tires offer the type of traction in the snow and ice that can sometimes make the difference between a safe trip home and getting stuck in below-freezing conditions.

In addition to winter / snow tires, we offer a variety of inexpensive, yet stylish, wheels to complement the looks of your vehicle. The majority of these inexpensive wheels are painted silver, gray or black (nothing chrome or polished, folks...those tend to not hold up very wheel to the salt, rocks, and debris that are common occurrence in snow driving) and are a practical alternative to mounting and dismounting tires on the same wheels twice a year. Tire Rack offers a variety of inexpensive alloy wheels from Sport Edition, Elbrus, moda, and Borbet for virtually any budget.

Winter
Is this in your immediate future? You need snow tires and wheels.

If you think about it, dedicated winter wheels make perfect $en$e: some of these inexpensive wheels are between $75-$99 depending on model and size. Typically, mounting and balancing tires will cost between $60 and $120 twice a year. Add it up and it's clear. In a matter of two to three winters, wheels pay for themselves and then some! And that's not even taking into account the time saved having to go to a tire shop twice a year.

So consider buying dedicated winter wheels this season. They're practical, efficient, and in the long run, a terrific investment. Call us or order online today!

More Fitments for Mustangs

Thursday, July 22, 2010 by Ethan Burns
Because of possible fitment concerns that need to be reviewed on an individual basis, there are some optional sizes for select vehicles that we don’t list on our website. If you don't find the tire size you're looking for online for Ford Mustangs or other vehicles, contact one of Tire Rack's highly trained sales specialists. We can accurately recommend sizes that are available and discuss any details that you will need to know.

For example, one such size for the 2007 Mustang V6 is the 235/60R16 Sumitomo HTR A/S P01. The tire fits correctly on the vehicle and wheel but is wider than stock. Another is 255/50R17 -- it will rub under full lock when mounted on 9” wide wheels with an ET40 or higher. We can offer suggestions on vehicle modifications that will allow oversize tires to fit in some cases.

Ready, Set, Go

Do you have more than one set of tires and wheels for your cars? Are you tired of paying your car dealer to register your tire pressure sensor codes every time you rotate tires or swap out extra sets of tires/wheels?

If you own one or any of the applicable models from the following manufacturers you can avoid those expensive trips to the dealer and store several sets of TPMS sensor codes, for up to 4 separate vehicles, by using the ATEQ TPM QuickSet Reset Tool.

  • Acura
  • Honda
  • Hyundai
  • Infiniti
  • Kia
  • Lexus
  • Mitsubishi
  • Nissan
  • Scion
  • Subaru
  • Toyota

The ATEQ TPM QuickSet Reset Tool is a valuable tool to reset a vehicle's Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) when replacing sensors or swapping tire sets, for instance, from a summer Tire & Wheel Package to a winter package. Additionally, the tool's "swapping tires" function assists you in tracking and recording the TPM sensor information after rotating tires.

ATEQ TPM QuickSet Reset Tool
The PC software (included) provides easy, step-by-step instructions for reset.

Features:

  • Compatible with future applications (upgradable online)
  • Advanced stream decoding for faster signal recognition
  • OBDII plug-in extension cable
  • Easy, step-by-step instructions
  • Tire rotation tracking and recording
  • Save and restore old tire configuration
All you need to do is connect the Quickset to your PC and download the current software. Connect the Quickset tool to your car through the OBDII diagnostic link connector under the dash on the driver's side, and retrieve the sensor codes from your existing wheels. Save these codes and any additional codes for a second set and the tool is enabled to switch between "winter" and "summer" wheels or "track" and "street."

Why bother with the hassle of tying up your car and taking valuable time away from your busy schedule? For what it would cost to have the sensor codes reset at the dealer a couple of times you could own the ATEQ TPM QuickSet Reset Tool and make the swap yourself in just a few minutes.

Wheel Lug Torquing

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
It's relatively easy to install a set of aftermarket wheels that are part of a Tire & Wheel Package, but one of the biggest details you'll need to pay attention to: wheel lug torquing. Believe it or not, there's an exact science to it. Proper installation requires that the wheel lug torque be set according to your vehicle's recommended specifications, so grab your owner's manuals. You should be able to find torquing details within.

And as your full-service online tire and wheel shop, Tire Rack is here to help with a few quick pointers.

For starters, make sure your threads are clean and dry. Lubricant or dirt, even oil and grease can weaken the torque values which might cause you to over-tighten the wheels. And if you over-tighten the wheels, you risk ruining the lug nut or hub, among other things.

Once your threads are clean, feel free to apply the lug hardware by hand before you finish the tightening process with a torque wrench. Be sure to follow the bolt pattern that corresponds with your vehicle.
And after your first 100 miles, you'll want to check everything out again to make sure the wheel lug torquing is still accurate.

You can read more about the torquing process in our library of wheel tech articles, and if it's the wheel you need, feel free to shop our complete collection of aftermarket wheels.

Symmetrical, Asymmetrical or Directional??

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 by Bart Blackburn
Regardless if you're shopping for Continental Brand Car tires or for your Lincoln Continental, more tires show tread patterns of unique shapes. One of the most frequently asked questions is "I mounted my asymmetric tread car tires purchased online and it looks like two of the tires are running backwards. Did I get two of the wrong tires?"

The answer is "no," you did not get the wrong tires! The critical part of the tires in question is the outboard side being mounted out. Typically the outboard is going to have bigger tread blocks to stand up to the stresses of cornering better than the smaller tread blocks on the inside of the tread. Between the shoulder tread blocks some tread patterns seem to be running backwards, the significance of this appearance is overshadowed by the necessity to mount the outboard shoulder on the outside of the wheel.

So if you have the appearance of two of the tires running backward when looking at the tread but have the outside sidewall mounted out the tire is mounted correctly.

Below are examples of asymmetrical tread patterns:

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Shop for tires wheels online by vehicle.

Friday, April 30, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
As you consult the Tire Rack inventory for new tires and wheels, you'll notice that we continually push you to shop by vehicle. There are a number of important reasons why shopping in this way is truly the best way.

For starters, every vehicle is different. Simply searching by wheel size, offset and/or bolt pattern is not enough. To get an exact fit, it is necessary to pay attention to a series of details. So when you shop by vehicle, our systems calls upon a variety of measurements pertaining to your vehicle. All of which have been taken electronically by a series of tools. Wheels are measured similarly. After which a computer-aided design program creates a virtual drawing that allows our fitment engineers to decipher perfect matches. (Read more.)

Sounds complicated, and it is, but in the end you'll be satisfied with a fit that lacks vibration, wheel/tire interference and unbalanced handling.

When it comes to selecting the right tires, shopping by vehicle allows us to determine correct tire size information from the get-go. But size alone cannot determine an appropriate tire. The type of vehicle, where you drive it, wheel size...it all plays a role and that's where our Tire Decision Guide becomes a great resource.

And if you're in the market for both tires and wheels, we always recommend that you shop for a Tire and Wheel Package. Not only is it cost-effective, tires and wheels come premounted for easy installation. And of course–you can rest assured that it's a high quality, vehicle-specific, exact fitment.

Easy Storage Solutions for Snow Tires and Rims

Thursday, March 18, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
Spring is here, and for those of you who trade out snow traction tires for summer performance rims and tires, Tire Rack has a few easy tire storage solutions you might be interested in

Let's start with the Tire Storage Rack. It holds up to 400 pounds, and beats a stack of tires in the corner of your garage or basement any day.

If the walls in your garage are consumed with racks of bikes or random pieces of yard equipment, you might have no other option but to stack your snow wheels and tires in a corner. With the Tire Garage, they'll be out of site and out of mind until the snow falls again.

The Seasonal Tire Tote is another tire storage option. They're especially great for transporting competition tires, but will protect your snow wheels and tires just the same. To create a fully enclosed tire bag, you'll want to invest in Wheel Felts, too. These industrial felt pads will close off the Tire Tote for worry-free transportation and storage.

As your tires online store, we do everything we can to give you the one-stop shopping experience. Check out our complete selection of accessories—you might find something you've always been looking for!

Brake Pads and Rotors at the Tire Rack, Customize Your Brake System

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Chad Hocker
Ever thought to buy brake pads and rotors online? With Tire Rack you can buy brake pads and brake rotors of your choice shipped to you, or your installer. Tire Rack has brake components to fit your vehicle broken down into four performance categories to help with the selection process. About a year ago, I noticed my Chevy Impala's brake system was not performing like I remembered. The Impala is used to get me back and forth to work in an efficient manor. All I needed was an Original Equipment replacement level brake product. I selected the Akebono ProACT Ceramic Brake Pads from the Premium Brake Pad category. I always like to use the products  Tire Rack carries to see for myself how they work in the field, so I made the purchase and got to work updating the Impala with my new Akebono ProACT Ceramic Pads.

The Akebono ProAct Ceramic Pads have met my expectations. They work well in rain and dry conditions and do not make a lot of dust. One thing I did notice during winter driving is the Akebono ProAct Ceramic Pads do have a little more initial bite as the front wheels have locked up a few more times than last winter with my O.E. brake pads (no ABS on the Impala). No worries; a small change to my braking style and I'm happy with the overall performance of the brake system on Centric Premium Brake Rotormy car.

Not to forget the brake rotors, as its always a great time to replace brake rotors and brake pads at the same time. The Centric Premium Rotor is a great Original Equipment replacement rotor. One thing I really like about the Centric Premium Rotor is the Electrocoating (E-coating) black finish. The finish really makes the rotors look sharp especially if you have a wheel that shows the rotors or, have a winter wheel that shows the rotor more than the summer wheels.

Check to see which rotors or brake pads work best for your car at Tire Rack. Tire Rack has many brake system options to chose from. I just wanted something like the Original Equipment brake system.  You may want to step it up for some additional performance. Tire Rack can offer you the custom brake pad and rotor package to meet your needs.

Buy Competition Tires Online at the Tire Rack and have them Heat Cycled Prior to Shipping

Friday, February 12, 2010 by Chad Hocker
Try Heat Cycling the easy way at Tire Rack.  As today's race tires become the technology base for tomorrow's street and competition tires the care and break-in of a tire have become more methodical and are important to do correctly.  The Tire Rack has developed a Heat Cycling service ($15 each) for competition tires purchased through the Tire Rack.  Basically, a proper Heat Cycling of a new competition tire will allow the rubber bonds to relink in a more uniform manner from when they were originally manufactured.  This allows the tire to preform at more consistent performance level for a longer time.

The Tire Rack will stamp your tire As Tire Rack Heat cycled prior to shipping them out.  Check out some of the Heat Cycling process and take a look at theHeat Cycling Process at Tire Rack picture of a tire being Heat Cycled at the Tire Rack.  Also if you by a performance tire and wheel package selecting the heat cycling service we will Heat Cycle your tire using one of our wheels to prevent any possible damage to your new performance wheel or track wheels.  We'll then mount your newly heat cycled tire on your new wheels and get them on the way!  The transit time will allow enough time for the rubber to efficiently relax. Heat Cycling can be added at the time of check out.
