Initial Review, 5,000 Miles on Tires
August 12, 2012

I am big fan of these tires and of TireRack. The info provided on the website is invaluable - really helped me choose not only the correct tire (specs and ratings) but also the best tire for me. I had previously bought a set of 235/70R15 Yokohamas ATs for my 98 std cab 2wd Ranger (love those too!), and now these 245 SAT Khumos are doing great on my 99 ext cab 4wd Ranger. I wanted to get the correct size and duty rating tire for each of these trucks because I specifically did not want a heavy, over-sized, and unresponsive tire that would hve a negative impact on mileage. Being able to research specs and compare other user's experience, at my convenience, was invaluable to me.

So far both my Khumo and Yokohama sets are doing stellar. No problems what-so-ever. I don't do any off-road muddin', though, but I think my son did once and he came back in one piece. I would not hesitate to take these tires anywhere they are intended (hence, All-Terrain). They are a quality, competent, very respectable tire. And I am huge fan of Michelin tires. I run them on my 2000 Dodge Caravan, and Michelins LTXs are what I replaced on my trucks.

After speaking with my Customer Service Rep Rudy, he told me the Khumos are probably 75%-80% of what Michelin a tire is. I too was a little concerned with how Khumo tires would hold-up and perform. But I decided I would take 75%-80% of Michelin for probably 60% of the cost of Michelin. I haven't regretted it for a moment. Besides, as far as I'm concerned, these Khumos and Yokohamas seem closer to 90% of Michelins. Don't get me wrong, I love the Michelin Harmony tires I have on my Caravan - best tire I've ever driven on - in rain or on curvy mountain highways along side semi-trucks.

I saved a good bit of dough with these tires, and I couldn't be happier with their performce.

Thanks TireRack.

I bought these because I drive about 50k miles a year for work. They had a great warranty and I didn't feel like going with a lesser tire and replacing them every 6 months. What a pleasure they are. I replaced the factory run flats, and the ride felt much better. NC downpours are no problem, just now at 51k miles did I first feel the slightest bit of hydroplaning, and I am pretty much at the wear bars. They have been very quiet until the last 2k miles, now they are noisy, but again, I can't complain. I'm 6k miles past the warranty (28k past the warranty for the rears since they are larger than the front). I'm buying another set right now, that's why I'm on the website now writing the review.

Overall this has been a great tire. I bought them following an accident resulting from poor traction OEM tires in a snowy environment and I have to say they have performed extremely well. My truck is heavy (8K), and has tons of torque. These tires never let go of the road and have worn suprisingly well considering I pull a 14K horse trailer with them. As it stands I think they will make it to the 45K range before I absolutely have to change them. I am down to 4/32 now with 33K on them now. They never even break loose on wet pavement which is something all diesel owners can appreciate. As for snow traction, they were pretty amazing. My wife was stranded on the highway in a snowstorm shortly after I bought them and I was able to get to her with almost no slipping. I also pulled 4 other trucks out on the way to her. Were I not finding myself spending more time off road now than on it, I would definately buy these tires again. They have been so good, in fact, that I have talked many of my relatives into getting them. Additionally this is the first set of tires I have bought from tirerack, and I expect I will continue to use this website for future tire purchases.

Initial Review, 38,000 Miles on Tires

Purchased in 2009 to replace factory tires on my car. After not being able to drive through lightly packed snow on mountain pass roads and getting stuck overnight waiting on the nearest (and only) gas station in the area to open up to buy snow chains, I decided a highly-rated performance all-season tire purchase was in order, even though the original tires had many miles of tread life left on them. After sifting through countless review websites, I settled on the consistently highest-rated high-performance all-season tires. Although not as inexpensive as other offerings, I can truly say "you get what you pay for!" with tires. Western Washington roads are some of the worst in the country in regards to tread life, but after more than 3 1/2 years of driving in all weather conditions (mostly wet, with some snow/ice and a fair amount of dry weather) the tires perform as well as on day one. Tread depth is down to 7/32" from the original 10.5/32", which is a very nice surprise after the amount of time and miles driven. Sidewalls stay nice and firm for optimum handling in higher-speed cornering and loss of traction is never an issue during spirited driving with fast starts and hard stops. I will most definitely look to purchase these tires (or their upgrade, if Michelin upgrades them) again when the time comes. You will not be disappointed with this purchase!

Only put a few thousand miles on it so far so cannot rate snow/ice traction. I did a ton of research on the best tires for the oddysey. I like these tires. All around better than the michelin oem. Only complaint is the sidewall is softer and cornering/handleing is not what is used to be on the michelins. Also getting about 1 mpg more with these over the michelins. Never received the rebate with goodyear. It showed up on the website then disappeared. Not happy with that. I filled out the form correctly but as this point not counting on the rebate at all. That is my bigges tcomplaint. Do not count on the rebate.

Compared to the OE tires these Kumhos are the most awesome tires ever. No more feeling like a bobble-head doll or shouting to be heard. So far I have experienced every traction and handling situation and these tires kick-"donkey" over anything else I've had.

Normal Driving: When new, the steering felt refreshingly lite. They have inspired more confidence going around curves/corners allowing for my more spirited side to show. Oh, did I mention how quiet and comfortable they are? Going over expansion joints and potholes is no longer a jolting experience.

Inclimate weather: Good grip so long as you do over accelerate (LEADFOOTS BEWARE). If you do just backoff and reaccelerate and they'll bit. In the snow they do a great job of pack-and-release. That's good thing. On ice/hard packed snow they cut like a saw to get traction and it doesn't take long for that to happen.

My two problems with these tires neither of which will prevent me from buying them again, but would be nice if improvements where made.
1) I beleive this tire will have a mid life crises and lose some of its ability to handle snow/ice well. This is based on the outer channels losing their ridges.
2) The Revolutions per mile (trpm) is lower then the OE tires. This affect the speedo reading. It shows a higher speed then actual. If this is a concern then be sure to compare your stock tires trpm to the Kumhos. TR's "Help" website can help clarify the speed differences between the two.

Initial Review, 9,000 Miles on Tires
July 01, 2012

Hello All! These tires came as OE on my 2012 Sorento EX GDI. After reading reviews and driving mostly 9,000 highway miles, I've developed a few opinions about them. Firstly, I wouldn't necessarily buy them as replacements unless I get one HECK of a deal. I've driven in reasonable to torrential rain storms and have found that the traction these tires provide in slick surfaces is reasonable at best. From time to time the wheel would pull to a side as I went through moderate puddles of water on the freeway, something I've only experienced with substantial wear on other tires. I didn't feel very inspired, but I didn't feel as if the car was going to veer off the side of the road and crash. I'd describe we weather traction as 'safe' at best.
Not long after I purchased the car, I had a chance to go to Mammoth, Ca during a snow storm. Without AWD or the use of chains, the tires tracked pretty decent, however after reading the reviews, I can honestly agree with many people on the website when they say the tires can handle light snowfall at best. With the use of the downhill-brake assist feature on the car, I wasn't worried about going downhill, more ensuring I had adequate distance for braking. Driving with these tires in snow forces you to remember all the things your dad would tell you if you learned to drive in the early 80's.... distance, distance, distance, slow, slow, slow. It wasn't bad and you'd certainly get where you were going, but you have to think more while you're driving to get there safely.
In dry weather... the tires are fairly quite, corner pretty good and have an 'eco' rating to them. They're wearing pretty well, however with age the tires are getting louder (shouldn't that happen near the end of the service life). I keep meticulous care of my car (and tires) and am a pretty smart car guy, but i'm quite certain I wouldn't purchase these tires when it comes time to replace them. Pirelli and Continental are more legit.

Initial Review, 1,000 Miles on Tires
May 14, 2012

I bought these tires for use on my 2 minivans in Okinawa, Japan and am extremely happy. The roads on Okinawa are well known locally for the slippery roads due to the use of coral as an aggregate in the concrete. So far these tires have not slipped or spun where my other tires usually did. No spinning tires when leaving a traffic light on wet roads. No slidding whatsoever when cornering on wet roads. They seem to be a little noisier at higher speeds for the around here. (80KPH or around 50 MPH) I have not had them on long enough to rate the treadwear or the winter conditions. (It never gets below around 50 degrees F) All in all I am very happy with the value I got for the price. Another thing worth noting is the speed of shipping from the website, all 8 tires arrived within 8 days of placing my order. Highly recommended tires!

Win, Place or Show with Toyo Motorsports Tires

Friday, May 11, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

The first Saturday in May is no ordinary Saturday, especially if you like speed. This day means horses galloping down the stretch at Churchill Downs and even more horsepower on our skidpad. In Louisville, the Race for the Triple Crown begins with the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby. In South Bend, we start the 29th edition of the Tire Rack One Lap of America.

Whether we're on the autocross track or the horse track, we all want to win. Winning the Derby requires a serendipitous collaboration between horse, jockey and trainer. Winning on the asphalt requires similar partnership between man, machine and tires.

We're all very excited about our new partnership with Toyo Motorsports. Tire Rack now offers the streetable road race/time attack Proxes RA1, the Proxes R1R, the Proxes R888 and the Drag Racing Radial Proxes TQ.

275/40-17 Toyo Proxes RA1

275/40-17 Toyo Proxes R1R

275/40-17 Toyo Proxes R888
275/40-17 Toyo Proxes TQ Drag Radial
275/40-17 Toyo Proxes TQ

The RA1's strengths are its wide variety of sizes, a track record of relatively good wear and resistance to heat cycles, ease of use and handling predictability. R888 tires add even more grip but it's more sensitive to vehicle set-up. Both tires give you tons of grip but can still be driven to the track (as opposed to the track-only BFGoodrich g-Force R1 and Hoosier R6).

Although the Hankook Ventus R-S3 offers outstanding performance in dry conditions, the Proxes R1R has shown surprisingly good traction at cooler ambient temperatures and is a tire worth considering in the Extreme Performance Summer category. Toyo Proxes TQ radials help lower your 1/4-mile time at the strip, while allowing you to drive back home on the same set of tires.

With these new choices to choose from, we definitely have the right tires for the thoroughbred in your garage.

TOYO FAQ:

  1. Can I special order another Toyo tire that's not listed on your website? With our current Toyo agreement we only carry the Toyo tires that are listed on our website.

  2. You mention that many of these tires can be driven to the track, how come the Hoosier R6 and BFGoodrich g-Force R1 don't fall under this category? These tires have such a light carcass and gummy compound that any minor debris will work its way through the tread and puncture the tire.

Initial Review, 6,000 Miles on Tires
April 28, 2012

I have driven on Michelin Alpin, Bridgeston Blizzak, and older Continental WinterContact winter tires before on my previous cars and minivan. I must say that these Continental ExtremeWinterContact winter tires are definitely the most quiet, best handling, and most comfortable ones from my experience. My commute is about 40% city streets, 30% freeways, and 30% curvy mountainous highways. It is because of the mountainous roads that I must travel on regularly which prompted my winter tire research for a high performance winter tire. The Tire Rack website and review was very influential in my decision to try out these ExtremeWinterContact winter tires. I must say that the reviews are quite accurate as my last set of Bridgestone Blizzak WS60 compared very similarly to me as the Tire Rack review comparison. One difference I should point out was that I found the ExtremeWinterContact tires on my Honda Odyssey minivan worked best for the road I typically traveled when inflated to 42psi on the front and 40psi on the rear. These tire pressures yielded the best balance between cornering performance, ride comfort, and road noise.

I had finally removed these ExtremeWinterContact tires for my all-season tires (Kumho ECSTA Platinum LX... also excellent tires) even though our weather in Vancouver, BC has warmed up to over 15C. The ExtremeWinterContact tires worked so well in the dry that I had forgotten they were winter tires that should be swapped out for all-season tires. In summary, I highly recommend the Continental ExtremeWinterContact winter tires for anyone looking for the best performance winter tires for ice, snow, wet, and dry conditions.

Replaced a set of Conti Pro Contact Continental's (Mercedes should be ashamed of putting this JUNK on a new car. I have two sets of wheel and tires for this car. Winter tires Blizzak WS 60's and Sport wheels for summer. About 20000 miles on the Conti's and they where shot. When we changed them out one front tire was coming apart inside. Never run low, charged with nitrogen. They where very noisy and vibrated ( balanced twice, alignment checked by Mercedes. Mercedes mechanic said that there Conti's are pure junk. These Michelin tires are not cheap (You get what you pay for). I have not had the chance to drive them in the rain because it has not rained. These Michelin's are quiet, very responsive and the car is a true pleasure to drive. I will update this review when I get some more miles on them. Love this tire so far. Bought these tires almost two years ago based upon the reviews, surveys and specs on the website. I drive less then 10k miles per year. This tire performs very well. I was skeptical based on the price but i can tell you that thee tires are a great value. The ride is comfortable, quiet and traction is great in dry, wet and light snow. I live upstate new york ( poughkeepsie area) and these tires performed very well. Heavy snow traction is not so great. No all season tire is good in those conditions. My only gripe is with the tire wear. i will probably get a few more more months out of them but will need to replace them before this coming winter to maximize snow traction if needed. Would nonetheless buy these tires again. Yokohama may need to tweek the formula just a touch to improve wear.

Hello Everyone...I assume that you are shopping for tires. I am not one that usually writes a review, but I am an avid reader of reviews, particularly when I am shopping for something. However, I writing this review to share my experience with the Kumho KR21 "New Set" of tires that I purchased from Tire Rack. I am so impressed with this tire...SO SO SO impressed! So impressed that I am writing a review! LOL! I was running the Michelin Hydro-Edge tire on my 2004 Camry, but have not been happy with this tire for some time. So I purchased just 2 Bridgestone tires half-way through the life of the Michelin's and the Bridgestone tires wore out before the already worn Michelin's. Believe it or not, but I had hydro-plane issues with the Michelin tire (Hydro-Edge); supposed to be design to handle wet conditions, but I disagree to the utmost. In short, the Kumho KR 21 has personality; it has style; it sits high and rides smooth and quiet. It grips the road tightly and waits for your next command! I have been ranting and raving in the office about a new set of tires...everyone around me says, well it's a new set of tires, they are suppose to ride like that. To the contrary, all new tires don't ride as smooth as this tire. I've bought Michelin for years, and Bridgestone tires, but never felt this strong about any one brand. But now, I am a fan of Kumho. I am a fan of the Kumho KR21! This tire has changed the way that my car sits and ride. I got a great price on the tire at Tire Rack ($299) for four, before shipping...shipping was only $50. That's amazing! Locally, they were charging every bit of $600 plus, before the alignment. So I saved alot of money buying my Kumho KR 21's with Tire Rack, and I hope my review gives you some insight and piece of mind about your buying experience. By the way, Tire Rack.com, if you all have an incentive program for referrals, email me, I have a ton of people that I will personally send to your website. Have A Great Day!--Ken

Why is the Same Tire Listed Twice?

Friday, March 30, 2012 by Cy Chowattukunnel

While researching tires on your website, you may see the same tire listed twice. For example, in the 225/65-17 size, you'll see a $173* Michelin Latitude Tour and a $182* Michelin Latitude Tour. Are these two tires really identical? Or are there differences? One of the options (the Latitude Tour currently listed at $173) is an Original Equipment tire used on the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox LS. The other Michelin option (currently listed for $182) is the "normal" version of the Latitude Tour.

What are the technical differences between the two versions? With these two tires, there are differences in each tire's load carrying capacity, treadwear rating and weight. The non-Original Equipment Latitude Tour has a 100T service description, while the GM variant Latitude Tour has a 102T service description. A load index of 100 equals 1,764 lbs. of load carry capacity and 102 carries 1,874 lbs. The Original Equipment tire has a treadwear rating of 720 compared to a 600 rating on the "normal" Latitude Tour. Each tire is offered with a 65,000 mile treadwear warranty. The Latitude Tour with the 100T service description has two polyester plies and a 30 pound weight, where the GM variant Latitude Tour has one polyester sidewall ply and a 25 pound weight.

To summarize, both tires are similar; however the Original Equipment version of the tire should wear better and has less carrying capacity.

If you're replacing one or two tires, you should try to stay with the version you currently have so you have the same grip on each corner of the vehicle. When replacing four tires, either option will work, unless the O.E. variant is for a vehicle that's markedly different than yours.

Michelin Latitude Tour $173*
Michelin Latitude Tour $173*
Michelin Latitude Tour $182*
Michelin Latitude Tour $182*

225/65-17 Michelin Latitude Tour FAQ:

  1. The "normal" Latitude Tour is listed as being on backorder, how long will this last? Backorder means that the tire is on order, but the tire manufacturer can't provide an approximate in-stock date. We can make a projection based upon the last ship date and whether or not a production run is scheduled and past patterns. We are constantly following up with the tire manufacturers for up-to-date information. Since there is no production run scheduled, we project this tire will be available in approximately two or three months.

  2. I have a third-generation (2007-2011) Honda CRV, which version of the Latitude Tour do you recommend? Also, does the GM variant Latitude Tour have enough carrying capacity? I'd choose the GM variant tire because the 5 lbs. of weight savings is substantial. Fuel economy will vary with several parameters, but if everything else remains the same, shedding 5 lbs. of weight will provide a measurable improvement.

As far as weight carrying capacity, the CRV has a gross axle weight rating of 2,226 in the front and 2,290 on the rear. So each tire must carry 1,141 lbs. to meet minimum spec. At 1,764 lbs. (1,605 with the standard SUV and truck adjustment), either tire has more than enough capacity.

I have a 2006 Mustang V6 with the GT wheels, I purchased the Firehawks because I liked the style of the tire and the other reviews based on the tire. I have also checked out the Firestone Website about this tire. I'm very happy with the performance on dry and wet roads with this tire, cornering is amazing and from a stop the tires just GRIP! I have complete confidence in these tires. THe only other tire I was considering where the Pirelli's but I don't think I will ever change to them with the way these tires have performed. Extremely Happy with these tires. I will buy them again and again.

Initial Review, 800 Miles on Tires
December 26, 2009

These tires are AMAZING. I got caught in an ice storm the road was a sheet of ice, uphill rain coming down and freezing on the roadway. Cars off the road, others stuck on the hill. I walked right up that hill around a Esclade that was sideways on the hill. Without spinning a wheel. Last night I got stuck in a heavy snow storm Christmas night over the RT 52 mountain from Ellenville NY. About 4" of fresh snow on top of freezing rain. The Blizzak's performance is amazing. There was no one on the road. I stopped in the middle of the steepest part of the mountain and the car started without even spinning a wheel. When I came down the other side the car traced perfectly no sliding or slipping at all. I hard braked it from about 35 MPH, the anti-locks kicked in and came to a perfect straight stop. The tires are perfect for my car. I can not make any comments as to tire wear as I only have about 800 miles on this set of tire. I researched a bunch of tires here and made an educated decision base on the previous reviews of this tire. "It is like being able to test drive the tires before you buy them". Thanks again Tirerack for a great price and the research area on this website.

Looking for the Best Autocross Tires?

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 by Zig Ziegler

Choosing the best tire is one of the most important factors of a successful autocross season. Racers spend lots of time and energy in extracting every ounce of horsepower and torque from their engine, and sometimes forget that all of this power is useless unless it can be effectively transferred to the track. There are four small patches of rubber that play the most important role in determining your vehicle's level of performance.

There are two distinct groups of autocross tires. The first group is made up of dedicated track tires that are DOT approved, but are never intended for street use. Drivers using these tires want maximum dry grip and will have separate wheels to install at the track. I believe the best tires in the Dry Racetrack & Autocross Only category are the Hoosier A6, Hankook Ventus Z214 and Kumho Ecsta V710.

The second group of tires is for the autocrosser who's willing to sacrifice some dry grip in order to have a tire they can drive to and from the track. In the Extreme Performance Summer category I like the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec and Hankook Ventus R-S3.

I think these tires are the best choices in each group because of their dry traction and steering response are some the highest rated by customers who have used the tires. Unlike shopping for any other tire, these are the two most important attributes to an autocross tire. Anything else like ride comfort or road noise is ancillary to your autocross needs.

Whether you're looking for Hoosier tires for sale, Hankook reviews or to buy Dunlop tires, our website offers you everything you need to have the best autocross season!
