Initial Review, 22000 Miles on Tires
I purchased General Alitmax tires for my 2006 Mercedes E350 4-matic based on positive TireRack reviews and the compelling price when compared to Conti (the OEM tire on my car), Michelin and other options. My selection criteria was to find a solid performance tire with good four season handling characteristics. Quite frankly, price was a secondary consideration. After researching options for my car, the Altimax seemed to stand out as the all-around best value. Now with over 22,000 miles on them I can say that they have lived up to the billing. Very solid dry weather performance (a little more sidewall rigidity would be nice), smooth ride, but where they really shine is in wet and snowy weather -- especially with the 4-matic set-up. They are also very quite on all but grooved concrete surfaces with no indication of changing harmonics as they wear. Over 20,000 miles and little sign of wear implies that I should easily get 45,000 to 50,000 miles out of a set. I don't normally consider Generals when looking for new tires, but they have a winner on their hands with the Altimax. I just put them on my dad's 2006 Cadillac DTS. It will be interesting to see how they perform over time on a heavier vehicle.
