Initial Review, 3500 Miles on Tires
February 09, 2012

These are follow-up comments to an earlier review when the tires were new. After 3500 miles, putting high performance M/S tires on a hybrid may seem illogical, but I am very pleased with the outcome. The original Dunlops were very small, LRR tires. The car handled terribly, showing heavy understeer, squealing, and minimal traction in all conditions. The new Sumitomo's completely removed the understeer and revealed a very nicely balanced chassis, although the low power and light weight of this car does not excatly tax the tires. Terrible wet cornering and wet traction were the worst problems, but these qualities have been completley eradicated by the Sumi's. My little Insight now corners with complete confidence and competence, wet or dry. Some say these tires are noisy, but I do not find that to be the case. In 3" of snow, the tires worked just fine. I beleive that gas mileage has been reduced 1 or 2 mpg, but it's hard to gage that in winter, because, when the heater is on, the Insight's autostop mode rarely goes into action at stop lights. In other words, gas mileage in this car is always worse in the winter. Now, it's getting aroud 38 mpg when it used to get 40. I am pretty sure that come spring, mileage will be back to normal. I recently inflated the tires to 40#, and did notice a slight improvement in mileage and no change in ride characteristics. These tires were a great choice.
