Initial Review, 5000 Miles on Tires
February 10, 2012

To start off with the path control is simply dazzling, steering response is right now (much appreciated from my last full set of tires -continental extremecontact DW). Ultimate grip is lacking on this tire, which the continentals had in spades & was easy to exploit. Still, this is an easy tire to getting running fast, even while cold, with still great grip on the twisties. It communicates every step of the way how much grip is left & progressive steps out when pushed too hard, letting you know how far to push it. The stiffer than usual sidewall makes the road easy to read with the hand but does take a hit when it comes to ride comfort. It's not bad over broken payment but it will make teeth cringe at times, even by noise alone. Too early to tell for tread patterns but I have a tendency to go through all 4 sets of tires in 1 year including rotations every other oil change. For the money it is a great tire & brought back my sense of man/machine connection with my RX-8 that was partially lost when I got the continentals after my OEM tires. I am more careful in the rain than the extremecontact DWs, which led to a few instances of overconfidence & very scary circumstances that I am glad to say the car & myself have made it out of in one piece with the exception of one time (snapped an axle amongst other things, but insurance came through). The wet traction with this tire is good but when she starts slipping you know it immediately and get that 'white knuckle' feeling to back off & let your heart go back to it's normal pace. Dunlop makes a great tire at a very resonable price & I see no reason I should not buy this tire again. There are other superior tires in the category but not at this price. Dunlops are usually underated & generally ingored by most if not all people I meet, car person or not. They deserve a lot of credit for what they do even though it may not be on the Michelin/Bridgestone level. At least they do without a Michelin/Bridgestone price of similiar tire.
