Initial Review, 5,000 Miles on Tires

I had Conti Extreme DWSs on last, and I remember being surprised and disappointed by the strange turn-in response from the minute I turned out of the tire shop's driveway (should have turned right around then and there, but I chose to live with them). It never really got better, and they reduced the natural confidence that this car normally inspires.

Then the Pilot Super Sports completely transformed my 540 sport wagon. It turns instantly, and exactly as much as you tell it. It grips beyond my willingness on public roads. It is sure-footed and agile (even for a big car), exactly how this car is supposed to be. It felt like coming home when I put the SSs on. :)

My only gripe is they are a bit noisy. It's not horrible, but you won't drive around thinking "I can't believe how quiet they are". On smooth, new pavement they are very quiet. But on chewed up roads or, as we have around here, freeway surfaces destroyed by idiots who drive on studded tires on all winter (it snows _maybe_ twice a year in PDX), the noise is definitely there. I guess I could say they are efficient at transcoding road surface conditions into noise. :)

Really a great tire. I will be putting them on my '06 530xiT wagon with no hesitation.
