Follow-Up Review: 60,000 miles on tires

I'm back at tire rack. Sold my Audi that went through 2 sets of these exact Kumhos. The only eyebrow raiser - every time I buy a new set, the price went up :-)

The Audi is sold - what a great car. Sold it for slightly more than I paid - and drove it for over 5 years. It's replaced now with a 1995 BMW 540.

A new set of Kumhos is going on the 540. This is now my 3rd set of these tires - I just can't find anything to complain about.
Initial Review: 40,000 miles on tires
July 02, 2009

Well, I bought a set in November, 2006. It's July 2009. And so back to TireRack to get ANOTHER set of these tires. Kumho Ecsta AST.

So how was the last 2 1/2 years? Got the tires UPS. Mounted and balanced at local shop. Within one week of getting the tires, one tire picked up a nail in the sidewall. DARN.

Go to tireshop. They will not repair the tire. I did NOT get the TireRack warranty. So darn, I have to buy a new tire, and I just got 4? To heck with that. I drove on it ... And drove on it... and drove on it.

Well, 40,000 miles later, the tire never lost pressure. I think I had to adjust tire pressure twice a year for summer/winter - I'm in So.Cal.

Wow... I was impressed with just the ruggedness - with a NAIL in the tire for 40,000 miles.

(2) These tires corner. I could take curvy freeway onramps and offramps with total confidence. The tire will give a slight squeal, but I never was fast enough to break the tire loose - and I'm inclined to give that a try. They are grippey.

(3) Rain. In So. Cal, we get torrents of rain - or it's dry. There is no inbetween. I could feel - every now and then - a tire lifting off - hydroplaning - but it comes right back down. Now granted, I have an Audi Quattro, so maybe that has something to do with it.

(4) Wear.... Even ... and long lasting. The evenness - has more to do with the suspension - but the tires did wear evenly all the way down. Long lasting - with spirited driving (not crazy - I said spirited) - I got 40,000 miles in in 2 1/2 years.

No question - I'm back now in July 2009 to pick up another 4 of these tires. Don't let the low price fool you. These tires perform.
