SO I live in Wisconsin and I self admit I am a terrible winter driver in my own opinion. The problem is that I have a 55 mile drive one way to work each day so 110 mile trek. In the past Ive gone no snow tires and its been scary many nights on the drive hom.
Now I have a Jeep Compass with 4WD and with the stock tires last year they didn't do too bad, but there was still some scary days. So this season I decided to grab a pair of these Altimax Arctics after much research on here and online in general.
COULD NOT GO WRONG with a purchase of these tires. First, things I were afraid of is the talk of control on dry pavement, road noise because they are snow tires, cornering etc. Now I wouldn't say im a tire enthusiast, and I am not super picky, but these tires are great here. Noise was quieter than the stock all season by FAR, and control and cornering were better as well which suprises me for a snow tire.
Now to control. Its snowed where i am about 18 days of the 27 so far in December. These things are beasts! We've had some light super slippery powder snow and these did not miss. Sure there a few times was a little slip from a stand still, but its remarkable how they dig through. I put them through the paces, pushing hard, sharp turning in 3-4 inches and light powder etc, very good extreme traction. We had some ice days, shockingly though I drove conservative, no issues. So the other night, we had more slipper powder, I found the sharpest grade hill in our city...pretty steep, decided to try it, about a quarter mile stretch...NO ISSUES! Couldn't believe it.
All the above all our other vehicles struggle big time with and tires spin. But not these. At my kids school, parents were getting stuck in parking, not these.
If you have a 4WD vehicle, matched with these, its a snow bobcat now. WIth my conservative driving and these, I feel a lot less stressed.
Purchase from tire rack was smooth and great and got free install based on deal!
