Initial Review, 15,000 Miles on Tires
May 25, 2012
Right off the bat: best tire I've ever had on my GTO. Its a 510 rwhp stroker, with gears. I have these tires on the back only (until the full set I just ordered comes in) so I can't speak for the fronts. The backs have lasted over 10,000 miles through some pretty "spirited" driving :D
I am constantly amazed at how well this tire grips. The straight line traction is incredible. With all the power and torque of a 417" motor, I can still very easily go WOT in first gear with just a little rolling into the gas. Second gear is just as easy. These tires grab so well, I rarely even get a chirp when shifting. Amazingly, the traction doesn't fall off very much in the rain. WOT in second without spinning is not unheard of.
The cornering is flat out awesome. These tires do exactly what you want them to; let off the gas, the rear end snaps back. Give it a little more, it drifts just a little. Give it even more throttle, and it drifts a little more. The rear tires respond very predictably to what the front of the car is doing, even when they are going up in smoke. Now, I'm no race car driver, and I rarely push the tires in the turns, but if you just like having a lot of control on the streets, they will never let you down or surprise you in a bad way.
In conclusion, I feel that these tires are the Holy Grail. I have a set of drag radials that have been languishing in the back of the garage ever since I got these tires, because I flat out do not need them; the Star Specs grip about 90% as good as the DRs.
This is the only tire I will buy from now on. Very manageable price too.
