Initial Review, 7,358 Miles on Tires
September 10, 2012
The Conti Extreme DW delivers just as advertised in the reviews by Tire Rack and elsewhere. I've driven on many Ultra, Max and Extreme category Summer tires on numerous vehicles and the "DW" is by far the most refined and best performing tire I have yet driven on.
Some folks coming from a stiff sidewall run flat OE tire like BMW owners, tend to rate the "DW" tires as having less steering responsive. The easy and quick fix is to add 3-5 lbs. air pressure and you will be amazed at how improved the steering response is. No center wear has been noted with the increased pressure nor loss of ride comfort by many BMW owners who have upped the air a few lbs. Those folks who are NOT coming from to Pirelli PS2 or other hard sidewall run flat tires will not likely need to add air above the OE specs as these tires are just fine but the increased pressure does improve steering response.
It's unclear to me why some people are wearing these tires out in 10,000+ miles unless they are tracking their car. At 7,000+ miles my tires look almost new and I drive quite spirited and have "test entry/exit ramps" where I compare various tires. The DW's have amazing grip in both the wet and dry with exception ride quality.
I have not noticed any increase in road noise with wear either so this may be an issue with certain car models that have excessive/unusual tire wear. I did have a set of Kumos that got very loud when almost worn out but the Conti DW's have been excellent. I expect to easily get 25K miles out of these tires which is wonderful. I would definitely recommend the Conti DW to anyone looking for a superior Max Performance Summer tire at a reasonable price.
Continental has an excellent reputation and this tire maintains that performance standard.
