My 2009 Jetta Wagon TDI came with these in 225/45/17 91h size. First off, my daily 80 mile route to and from work is a combination of city, farm backroads and highway. Driving through all sorts of weather conditions (heavy rain to deep snow), I have never gotten stuck or lost control of the car.
Since our roads in NJ have not been repaired much in the past couple of years, lots of potholes and cracks have developed. On more than a few occasions, I have hit these with a loud whack unavoidably occassionally and never had any of the sidewalls bubble etc. Also, the protective rib around the rim edge has prevented curb rash. On my 2006 Honda Accord, the Michelin's that came with the car where replaced 3 times due to potholes (these were Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 - similar size also) back when the roads were in better condition.
The tread wear is great, I am at 50k and imagine I have another 25k or so to go based on the measurements (they are at about 5-6/11's tread depth left). They are rated to go 60k miles.
Another benefit of this tire is due to the tread pattern they can be rotated any way you like (back to back - side to side) without removing the tire from the wheel.
They have gotten louder over time, much like a thrumming, however it is not unbearable. The robust construction of the sidewall comes at the price of a slightly harsher ride - again definitely bearable (no doubt the 45 profile contributes to this). Also this tire is one of the few tires to come with a hazard warranty from the manufacturer where they are replaced within a certain tread depth/time frame. Although I drive mostly the speed limit in the interest of safety/economy (my toddler rides to daycare and back with me), I do, on occassion, take on/off ramps with spirit though when I am alone though.
I would definitely recommend and purchase again.
