Initial Review, 900 Miles on Tires
February 09, 2013

I purchased these continentals to replace older Sumitomo's. I love them on dry. They are much quieter than my previous tires have very nice response and handling. I got to try these tires when the blizzard approached on Long Island yesterday. In three hours on almost a purely icy road the car was solid stable no sliding or skidding and handled beautifully far beyond my expectations. Driving up short Hills that were unplowed I was able to pass many cars that were not making it.
Some of these attributes can surely be an attestation to my all-wheel-drive vehicle. I would highly recommend these tires. The only thing I cannot comment on his treadwear as at this point I only have about 900 miles on them

I havent had my Sumitomo HTR Z3's long enough for an accurate review, But I did want to let everyone know how incredibly fast I recieved my shipment. Granted I did get lucky in the fact that they were shipped from one state away but nevertheless I had my tires in less than 24 hours from the time I placed my order, and they were shipped standard ground. Thank You Tire Rack for your exceptional service. This was not my first purchase from Tire Rack and wont be my last.

Just installed these tires. Drove about 20 miles. These tires fixed the noise problem that I had. My car made this helicopter/rumbling noise when driving. The noise would increase in volume and frequency as I increased my speed. I thought it was the wheel bearings and changed all four of my wheel bearings and rebuilt my axle shafts. The noise persisted. So I had these tires installed and now the noise is gone. It's too soon to tell how they perform but these tires are quiet and comfortable. The tread pattern looks sturdy and effective.

I have used various tires on this vehicle (Eagle GA, Eagle Hp, Bf Goodrich traction TA). For the price this is by far the best tire I have bought. I drive in a spirited manner, and on dry pavement these tires are accomodating. Turn in is responsive and predictable, traction is adequate, and holds well in corners. Wet traction is good when the tires are new, but hydroplaning increases markedly with wear. Winter driving is barely acceptable; I would recommend a dedicated set of winter tires if you experience more than occasional light winter weather with these tires. Additionally, these tires are comparatively quiet and comfortable.

These tires are great, quiet, and seemingly good lasting tires so far. I have 7000-8000 miles on these so far, not 100% sure. But anyways, these are very smooth. When you corner hard, these tires give some growl from the inner edges but nothing too loud or horrible. These tire sidewalks are soft which does effect steering response however, cornering is great. I had sumitomo tires before these and those had great steering response but horrible tread life. The steering response takes some getting use to and these hold a corner great. Hope fully I get 40000 miles at least out of these instead of 15000 miles like the sumitomos. I would buy these again. Oh almost forgot. In the rain, hydroplaning is non-existing. These hold the road well in the rain.

Tire Rack rated this tire as one of the best bang for the buck tires in terms of overall performance versus cost. I agree. No complaints whatsoever. Although Sumitomo may not be considered as an elite tire versus other manufacturers, I think this tire performs very well. For the average driver that wants better an average handling, braking, hydroplaning resistance, and traction, I think this tire does all these things well. Considering the price of these tires, I do not think I went wrong by ordering these from the Tire Rack. Thank you Tire Rack for providing your tire surveys and road tests.

I've had these tires on my car for the past 2.5 yrs and 20k miles. For the first 5k miles, they were remarkable- dead quiet, smooth, sticky, responsive. After that, there was a precipitous decline. They developed this pesky vibration which multiple RoadForce balances, alignments and rotations never cured. They then became noisier and developed this strange high-pitched hum. I thought my wheel bearings or suspension was at fault first, but turns out they all checked out fine. They also need to sufficiently warm up for a few miles regardless of temperature in the morning to get the flat spots out. Despite these issues, they are wearing okay and have 7/32 left all around. These tires were pretty cheap when I bought them so I guess you get what you pay for.

Absolutely magnificent tire!! Two days ago we had about 6 inches of snow and this tire just absolutely blew me away with how well it performed in the snow and ice. I kid you not, with my Camry, I could accelerate off of street lights as well as a 4x4 driving next to me. Stopping was no contest, I easily braked better.

As for wear, so far I'm almost 10K in and the tires show no wear whatsoever.

In the dry they aren't quite as sticky as the Sumitomos I replaced, nor are they as quiet, but in the wet they are about equal and in the snow there is no contest. The Sumitomos were not only bad, but dangerous and bordering on suicidal.

Comfort-wise the tires have a smooth soft ride, which probably explains the slight lack of steering response. They need a split-second to set up before they respond. Certainly nothing that is an issue in even spirited driving. On a track it might be a bit unnerving, but on the street its nothing to even think about.

Would I buy these again? As long as these are an option for a car I drive in all seasons, these will be on it!!!!

In a car with 420whp the 300 tread wear just is no where near enough. They are great all round tires. Good tread wear even with a useless 1st and 2nd.
At a 285/30-18 sidewall the ride was a little stiff compared to a 17" tire.
Pretty good wet traction. Much better than the kuhmo xs tires I also have in the wet.
My 255/40-17 kuhmos have better traction in the dry but their tread wear is no where near as good. Hence the two sets.

The roads and environment on Guam are tough on tires. The the roads are not only pothole ridden but also have very rough and jagged surface, and have seen my friends tires Continental DWS start to chip and chunk out. The HTR A/S PO1s absorb bumps well and are very grippy in the wet even with the slippery coral roads. Dry grip is great and is well suited for the light chassis of the 96 corolla.

I bought these tires for the tread pattern and mileage. Got 50k miles over 8 yrs, they're down to 4/32 now and still going strong, only deep water bothers them. I drive the car hard and these tires have always held tough no matter how far over the speed limit I am. I do put snows on for the winter so I can't talk to snow traction from the rear, but the fronts will track well if you give them a chance. Considering that I tend to drive the T-Bird in the rain and snow, I ride a motorcycle whenever possible, these tire are good at what I ask of them, grip well in the garbage and go baby go. I got 200+ horses under the hood and these tires can be hard to break loose on a dry road unless I'm really abusing the car. Will I put these back on, very good chance, I'm eyeing up another set of Sumitomos though, so we'll see. As for the people that wore them out real fast, I can only guess how they drive and if they keep the tire pressures right.

I negotiated a new set of tires from the dealer that I bought my car from tires as part of the deal to buy the car I knew nothing about the tires but I figured that they were not going to be the greatest given what I had to go through to get him to buy them. When I asked the service advisor were they any good he assured me that they were even after I offered to pay the difference in price between those and a better set. I have had these for 2.5 Ohio winters (luckily last winters was very mild) and they are horrible in snow and ice my traction control light is always coming on when I accelerate from stop and the tires are always spinning and struggling to gain traction on pavement driving and stopping on light snow is very tricky and almost impossible in heavy snow in the summer on dry pavement they are great but anything else they are unacceptable from a safety standpoint. I bought a set of Goodyear Weatherhandlers for my previous 2002 Impala and they were great and I was looking to purchase another set before I did some research and found out about the Michelin Defenders and I am looking to purchase a set within the next few weeks (hopefully before the next snowfall) If you can help it spend more money if you live in a rainy or snowy area (unless you are a thrill seeker) you will be happy that you did.

I've had these about a month. Purchased them as a less expensive replacement for the OE Michelins at about 70,000, based on reviews and Tire Rack testing of them. They are the best choice for the money. Half the price of the OE tires. They are quieter and more responsive. Traction except for snow is very good and I expect to get good mileage from them. They do seem stiff in winter until warmed up like another reviewer has mentioned. A great value for the money.

I'm extremely impresed by these tires. They are fantastic. They have ULTIMATE dry grip and traction. They are very comparable to the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymmetrics I just had previously to these, but at a much cheaper price. In fact, after a few canyon runs on highway 2 in CA (Los Angeles Crest Highway) I'd say these out perform the Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics and are the superior tire. They have slightly more ultimate dry traction and it seems a bit more effortless and complaint free doing it. I can't believe how high the limits of these tires are in speed around sharp corners.

Time will tell on whether the treadwear can be better, but they certainly can't be any worse than the Goodyears, and at $40 to $80 less per tire, you can't go wrong with these.

Instead of the normal P185/65R14 that turn at 902 revs/mile, I tested and fitted P185/70R14, 867 revs/mile . . . about a 6%, permanent overdrive. The mileage remains 52 MPG and handling improved. The larger diameter tires 'track true' at highway speeds versus the 'neutral stability' of smaller diameter tires. At 51 psi, they take curves wicked fast causing tailgaters to back off (and usually left behind.) It also lets the car run in 'hybrid mode' a little faster, keeping up with traffic while getting hybrid mileage. Since I'm into fuel savings, acceleration is not my problem.

Those are excellent tires, I was aboout to get a GT Radial tires , thay are made by yokohama but I loook at thses sumitomo at a great price and the 100K miles on warrantie and the price is hard to beat. I change my bridgestone OM tires for these Sumitomo and could not be happier, I live on a the Sonora desert so most is a dry drive, so far in highway the response at 75-80 mph is great no need for higher speed with the family, good grip on corners at 75mph. I have not test them on wet but here almost nevers rains. Noise and smood level is very good better than the OM tires. so I will buy them again for sure. I use to be Yoko's fan (still) but Sumitomo quality/price is excellent. If you are a average driver or the wife-family car this are a GREAT tires for sure, if you want to speed buy tires for that.

I purchased a set of Sumitomo tires for my 95 Honda VX. Unsure of which of only 3 brands available I have come to realize the decision was the correct one. I purchased the vehicle with the wrong size/dry-rotted tires, and when I put the correct size Sumitomo tires, I instantly felt like had had just installed power steering aswell. Using the incorrect size or any other than manufacturer recommended tires made steering very tiresome. I now have 19,000 miles on my tires and they still look like new. I highly recommend these tires and Tire Rack. Alan, Stockbridge, GA
