Had almost no snow or ice this winter but lots of rain. As expected these tires handled the rain without issue. Superior wet weather performance.

After two mid-Atlantic winters these tires impress for their relative quiet, smoothness and overall competence on dry and wet roads. My mpg suffers only a little. I still have 12/32 tread on all 4 tires. Wear has been even, keeping the pressure at 38 to 40 psi.

Just (Mar 28, 2012) took them off for the summer. Put on a set of Continental ProContact with EcoPlus Technology on my OEM wheels.

The DWS is in a different league as the original Michelin. While the DWS is slightly noisier than the OEM Michelin, it more than makes up for it in how much better it absorbs bumps and shocks to the wheel. Also, with the Michelin's, even though the TLS is all wheel drive I could easily spin the tires while shifting in to 2nd gear and could shake them loose coming out of tight turns (upon acceleration) I could not make these Continental tires break loose under the same conditions. The Continentals are cheaper and have been a best buy for me for the TL AWD. Also, the Michelin's were horrible in snow. I actually have to use snow tires to get anywhere. While I expect these Continental's to perform better than the Michelin's in light snow, I already have a dedicated set of snow tires that have the sever snowflake rating for the heart of winter.

I have used three brands of snows, Pirelli, Blizzaks and these Michelins. I have these on a corporate Malibu. I drive a LOT of city and through the Colorado Rockies and across prairie. I need a tire that will handle in most every temperature and condition and give me good stopping and handling in the city. These tires get worked very hard, especially in the city with quick starts at lights. If you are a city driver you know you may have seconds to make a left and you will tailgate the lumbering Buick, SUV or Camry in front of you to get through.

I will say this is an outstanding tire. I watched the videos here on Tire Rack and I cannot disagree. I love the Pirelli's and this tire in particular. I really cannot tell them apart in my driving so it is subjective. However, the Michelin's are holding up well as I drive a lot in the winter. These tires stay on minimum six months a year.

I took the Malibu out with these in a real slushy snow and it was passable. Nothing does really well in the slush as you ride up on it. I took my other car with Blizzaks and no difference. However, these tires bite, ride and recover well. They are really superb on dry road and warm weather, too. This is what I really appreciate. A Malibu is not a performance car but I drive it pretty hard, chirp the wheels frequently and push the front wheel drive. The back and front stay well planted and predictable. In the worst snow and ice the tires give good grip and minimum sliding with quick recovery. That is all you can ask. If the wear is good I am actually playing with the idea of putting these or some Pirelli winters on my Mini Countryman all year. I kayak and have an idea these will be good in sand and small rock near the rivers. Since I am in Colorado you can actually hit snow 12 months of the year in the mountains.
This is a great all around tire that should meet most needs. You can try and pick minute differences in tires but you will not go wrong with these.

The G-MAX was my third set of tires on this car. 35000 miles seems to be about the maximum amount mileage I can get out of a set of tires with this car. I keep it aligned and watch tire pressure closely but, I cannot rotate the tires due to the different size tires and offset of the OEM wheels. For all around performance, the G-MAX was better than the OEM Bridgestones and the second set Kumho LX, which performed well except on ice and deep snow. However, there is a reason why I only got 27,000 miles instead of 35,000+ with the G-max. I had to replace them because I couldn't stand the noise anymore. The first 5000 miles were fine but after that it sounded like I was running mud tires. Handling on dry, wet, snow and ice were fine. Treadwear good and even. Noise was awful. My radio only goes up to 10. VanHalen called me and ask me to quit playing their music so loud. Now trying the Hankook Ventus and Eddie hasn't called once. I'll report back in 20,000 miles. BTW,Tire Rack rocks. Working on about my 10th set of tires with different vehicles from them.

These tires are great in the snow. I got caught in a sudden snow storm in PA and these tires were unstoppable. I was passing cars, trucks & SUVs that were stuck without a single problem. Last year with my "all-season" tires I couldn't even make it up my driveway with a dusting of snow. Given that I bought these tire for their snow & ice handling I am very pleased.

As far as handling is concerned, I've noticed these tire feel slightly softer than my other tires but then these are on 16" wheels vs 18" wheels. I don't drive aggressively so I haven't noticed any degradation under normal driving conditions. So far there is no road noise to speak of and performance on wet roads has been excellent.

Given that these are WINTER tires and if you are buying them you are looking for winter performance I think they are fabulous. I don't know why people stopped buying winter tires.

This is my first experience with Conti's that I can say was outstanding! I am a very spirited driver in Michigan, in the worst winter we have had in 50 years and these tires performed wonderfully! 20K and these tires are still going strong and still handle competently. The only negatives (but very nominal negative) is they do generate just a bit of road noise, the sacrifice was comfort for handling (they don't take bumps great)but they are absolutely outstanding in the turns, on wet pavement and in the snow. For you high end tech. guys......These tires road-force wonderfully! I have installed 2 sets and every tire road forced to less than 10 lbs and balanced with minimal weights. The last set I installed (205 50 16's) only required a total of 3 ounces of wheel weights for all 4 tires and the tire with the worst road force numbers had 9 lbs of road force. These are GREAT tires! Forget about the Continentals of yester-year!

I live in Buffalo and I mounted these the week of Thanksgiving so I have a whole winter`s worth of driving to judge the quality of these tires.

Likes:

Wet traction because I felt good road grip through puddles.
I did not experience any wheel spinning during accelerating and my PT cruiser felt secure during cornering. This happened during first lake effect event. It was a light snow event and this is why I gave the tires level 10 for light snow.
Driving down the highway during another snowfall, the PT felt very secure and I did not detect fishtailing or slipping. Also level 10 for highway driving
Good performance during very cold days, and I always felt in control of the PT.

Dislikes:

During deep snow I had good grip accelerating but a little slippage cornering. That's why I only rated it level 8.
I found after very cold nights, snow packed in the treads does not melt and reduces the traction on the tires the next morning. I assume the same occurs on all snow tires.

Miscellaneous:

I got temporarily stuck in a snow drift on an unplowed street during our first blizzard. I freed myself after a short time.
I give these tires a level 10 for getting out of the snowdrift.
Overall great product from General Tire.

The van came with the Michelin LX4's which wore out at 40k. Was very happy with the feel of the Michelins in all conditions except for the snow in which they were dreadful. I use Blizzaks in the winter on dedicated wheels. Purchased the RT43's to replace the LX4's thinking that spring was here and wouldn't you know it, we get hit with a snow/ice storm. The RT43's were quite good in the snow/ice on brand new tires although I prefer a dedicated snow tire for the van.

For regular driving the RT43's are close to the Michelins but I prefer the feel of the Michelins. However, given the price differential between a new set of LX4's (or Defenders) and the all around capability of the RT43's plus favorable reviews, these tires get high marks and were worth a try. If they last 50K for this van which has a reputation for eating up tires, it is a no brainer. If they don't last, back to the Michelins.

As far as fuel economy is concerned, I think that the Michelins are better but time will tell.

I bought this set after reading reviews online and was more geared towards reliability. After getting them installed, I could tell right away how much quieter, responsiveness, and clean (with a notable brand name) looking this set is. I haven't put that much time on these tires and the weather here in KS is pretty unpredictable. I will always have backup tools and stuff for crazy snow/ice days but just to make it home with these tires will boost my confidence. I will re-evaluate again after having some time behind the wheel and going to places where I can really get on them without fear of slipping on ice/snow. It's like driving a new car almost since the tread noise has made it really quiet.

These are really good tires. They do exactly what's needed in the snow. As always, Michelin makes great tires. Dedicated snow tires, and especially Michelin tires, transform a vehicle's handling in the snow. My wife, who's not used to driving with snow tires, couldn't believe the difference the Michelins made. She used to question why I purchased and installed snow tires on my vehicles. Now, our Fit Sport, is her goto car whenever the snow falls. Where she used to think 4 wheel drive was a necessity, she now sees traction is much more a function of proper tires. I can only sit back and smile while she raves about the new found winter traction.



Important Side Note: It's hard for me to compare these Michelins to my Summer tires on this car, in that not only are they very different, but I went down two sizes as well, to a 14in wheel (Kosei from The Tire Rack) for winter use. This downsize in wheels and tires made for a much MORE responsive vehicle. The significant reduction in unsprung weight, made my car feel lighter and quicker, so much so, that now that I have my stock wheels and tires mounted, I miss the Michelin X-Ice tires! I will say, that compared to other dedicated snow tires I've used, these Michelins are superior.

I purchased these tires pre-mounted on new alloy rims and had them studded by tire rack. What a difference all around. My truck is only 2 wheel drive and with the 6.0 liter V8 had huge traction problems in snow and ice. Now it will climb the dirt road hill near my home no matter what is on the ground, I can go places that many front wheel drive cars can't get through. Only caution is the studs need serious break in time before you get aggressive as they tend to float the tires on top of the pavement until they wear in. Steering feels VERY light and disconnected until they bed down.

This review is of my WS70s bought this winter, but also my WS50s which I bought in 2007. Both sets of Blizzaks have been absolutely awesome and to be honest, I can't tell the difference between them. If you have never driven on proper winter tires then you will be astonished. When I bought my Mustang (305bhp/320lbft rear wheel drive) to use in upstate New York, everyone said I would need another vehicle for the winter. One lone friend told me that all I needed was good winter tires. He directed me to Tirerack. On my all-season (Ha) tires, the car was pretty much undriveable on ice and snow. With these studless ice and snow tires I have NEVER had any problem, and I'm a skier, so that means getting to the Mountains just after the storm. In six winters, I have seen at least ten accidents unfold in front of me in snowy or icy conditions and have never been concerned that I was going to become part of the accident. The car steers, accelerates, corners and brakes with great confidence. It would be a lie to say they have the ultimate grip of a summer tire, but they turn an unuseable car into a very good winter vehicle.

The only time these tires have caught me out is on wet pavement. On two occasions (in six years) they span up unexpectedly whilst accelerating pretty hard in second gear (The car is a Standard), but that was really my fault.

It is worth noting that in retrospect, I should have replaced them last year. The WS50s did about 30,000 miles and I expect the WS70s will be similar. The performance in ice was undiminished, but they started to struggle in snow because of insufficient tread-depth. I replaced them with about 3/16 of tread remaining. I'm sure this is less than Bridgestone recommend.

Just put a set on wife's 2008 Avalon, only driven 500 miles on dry roads so far, but VERY happy with these Pirelli's that replaced Michelin Energy MXV4's that wore out way too soon. Have a separate set of wheels/winter tires, so can't comment on snow/ice traction, but other reviews appear positive. Like the responsiveness as well as the ride, and they're pretty quiet on the highway. These are really great tires, I only wish they made them in the size my truck takes, I'd order a set in a heartbeat.

Coming from Continental ExtremeWinterContact's, the Blizzaks are more comfortable, steadier, and more predictable. My old Conti's actually had better take-off grip than the WS70's and had better dry weather grip and dynamics, but rode harsher, made the rear end squirrely, and were less predictable in breakaway events under all conditions. The Blizzaks are better in wet weather versus the Conti's and light years ahead in slushy conditions. I have not been stuck with them on during the winter of 2014, where we have received over 100" of snow. The only thing holding them back would be my car's ride height and lack of all wheel drive.

The only thing I would the WS70's to be better is in absolute grip (acceleration, brake, corning) but only if the predictability and stability were not compromised. Better to have a tire with lower limits that doesn't scare you than one with higher limits that does.

I use my car to visit customers about ~2 days a week, during those highway trips, I put on about ~200 miles total. The remainder, I have a short commute to the office or work from home. This is an AWD car with a 60/40 rear/front torque split so I kept a careful eye on rear tire wear. Tires were rotated every 10k. After the initial break-in and first 10k, I thought the Conti sidewalls were a little soft comparing to my Pirelli OEM's, but all in all, I determined the tire had a good all around rating.

I live in the Bay Area and when my friends don't feel like driving to Lake Tahoe, I volunteer, though my Audi can only hold 1~2 other schlorks including gear (hee hee hee)... Light/heavy snow performance is a 6~7 out of 10, but that's also due to poor ground clearance (and insufficient space in the wheel wells when they fill with snow). But hey, that's what you get with a good looking sedan with 18" wheels...

Last 10k miles, tire noise has increased slightly. I had a good experience with these and am now in the market for another set. Tire Rack will continue to see all my new tire business. Checking out Michelin PS3's, RE970AS's, and Eagle F1's. Will probably go with the PS3's to try something new and because they are relatively all in the same price range. Thank you Tire Rack.

After 10,000 miles, I'm impressed with these tires. While not as tenacious as studdable snows, these tires dont suffer from the noise issues with which studdable snow tires are burdened. The ride comfort is a fair trade, as these tires still provide very nice light and deep snow grip, and they seem additionally competent on the ice.

This was a tough winter with lots of opportunities to drive in challenging conditions. I drove through deep snow, across hard packed snow, two inch thick ice on the freeway. My Prius tore through it all. 7 plus inches of unplowed snow posed no issue. I drove at over 60 mph on two inch thick ice (just east of Lake Michigan) and found myself laughing at how easy it was.

What's more, and this is why I find myself buying Michelin tires over and over again, the tires are remarkably quiet in the dry. Although I have a separate set of summer wheels and tires (purchased from Tire Rack) I could easily run these tires with few issues. But I won't.

For those of you who drive a Prius or other hybrid, or are simply concerned with the mileage impact, I have found these tires, which are LRR, to be very good. I can easily average over 50mpg with my Prius in the warm, on fair weather tires. With these winter tires, I found my mileage to be closer to 44. How much of the decline is attributable to the tires, and how much is attributable to the cold weather, I cannot be certain. But now that it's a bit warmer, Ive seen my mileage climb back up to 50mpg, even though the winter tires are still mounted.

I would definitely buy these again, and I would recommend them. I hope this review has been helpful.

Choosing Between Performance Winter / Snow Tires and Studless Ice & Snow Tires

As a moderator of several forums, I have received many questions on snow tires this winter. Recently, a customer had a question about choosing between Studless Ice & Snow tires and Performance Winter / Snow tires:

I’m getting ready to order winter tires and wheels. My concern is that here in Denver, we can have big changes in temperatures. It’s not uncommon to be able to wear short sleeves during February and March, while the ski resorts are getting pounded less than 80 miles away. Given the temperature range, are there any brands I should stay away from that get squirmy when it gets warmer? 95% of my driving is in the Denver area. I only have two clients in the foothills just west of town.

Here was my response to his question:

Most of the tires in the Studless Ice & Snow category like the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70, Continental ExtremeWinterContact and Michelin X-Ice Xi3 will have slower steering response in warmer temperatures, and thus, feel a little squirmy. Of these choices, the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 feels the least squirmy, but would still give you outstanding snow and ice traction for the times you have to drive on snow-covered roads. 

If you move to a Performance Winter / Snow tire like the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-32 or Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D, you'll find that these tires have more responsive handling even in warmer temperatures. Unfortunately, there's a noticeable step down in snow and ice traction when compared to Studless Ice & Snow tires.

Are you trying to make a similar decision? You may want to lean towards one of the more aggressive snow tires like those listed above if one or more of the following are true :

  • Your geographical area gets heavy snowfall and/or lake-effect snow.
  • You are often driving on packed snow and ice.
  • You are willing to give up some dry grip and steering response for maximum winter traction.
  • You are a newer driver or want more confidence when driving in winter conditions. 

Choosing between these two performance categories may be difficult and is mostly a personal preference choice for the trade-off between snow traction and dry road handling. When making your decision, keep in mind what are the worst conditions you'll experience. The Subaru's all-wheel drive probably played a big part but these Pirellis are so far the best winter tires I've tried. Even better than Bridgestone Blizzaks that I've had on other Subarus, which themselves were excellent winter tires. The Pirellis have fantastic grip on packed snow and slush. The only time I experienced slight wheel spin was on glare ice. I also commend Tire Rack on their quickness of delivery. It usually took a few days on previous orders but this time I placed my order early afternoon one day and UPS delivered the following day. Can't get any better than that.

Bought a set of Blizzaks for my daughter's New Beetle in November. Her first reaction was, these tires are great and I don't slide or spin anymore when it rains. Then she drove in the snow and was thrilled that the car ahead of her was spinning wheels trying to get up a hill and she didn't slide or spin once, just went right up the hill. With the winter we've had here in Maryland, this was the perfect winter to have a set of dedicated winter tires. And if SHE notices the difference, they have to be an incredible tire for winter driving. We will go back to all-seasons for spring, summer and fall, but these tires will be on my "snow" vehicles from December through March every year.

Just put these Firestone Destination LE2's on, replacing the Michelin Latitude Touring tires that came with the Jeep. What an improvement!! With the Latitude's I was slipping and sliding all over the place - couldn't corner at all and even on straightaways I could feel the Jeep swaying and sliding - they felt dangerous! These LE2's are awesome - a night and day difference! We had about 2 inches of snow last night, so I could immediately compare the 2 tires. On the way to the tire store I was sliding all over, on the way back I tried very hard to get them to slip and slide. There was still some slipping and sliding of course (I was pushing these tires to see what the "breakaway" point was) but the difference was clearly noticeable. It's great to feel like I can go around a corner at more than 5 miles an hour, and change lanes on the highway without gripping the wheel with both hands and hoping I didn't end up in a ditch or facing oncoming traffic the wrong way. This Wisconsin winter has been rough but with these tires I'll be able to face what's left of it without feeling like I may die any second. There was no tire noise (same as the Michelin's) and the ride was great, but now I feel safe driving my Jeep!
