Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems On After Market Wheels

Thursday, May 6, 2010 by Roger Laughlin
TPMS SensorAs a Tire Rack retail sales representative, one of the most common questions I have is "If my vehicle came from the factory with a direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and I am going to use aftermarket wheels, what options do I have regarding the TPMS?" It boils down to the following three choices:

1) If you would like to continue the functionally of your TPMS system, Tire Rack can provide the sensors you will need at an additional cost.

2) You can reuse your original sensors by moving them from your old wheels to your new wheels, although it is highly recommended that you order a TPMS replacement hardware kit that includes new seals for your original TPMS sensors. Tire Rack also has these sensor kits (at an extra cost).

3) Finally, you can run your new wheels without sensors and forgo the benefits of your vehicle’s TPMS system. However, this may lead to some rather annoying side effects on most vehicles, e.g., a tone or chime every time you start the vehicle followed by a light on the dash that will remain on until the vehicle is switched off.

The choice is yours! For more information on TPMS systems

I have 4 wheels for summer and 4 wheels for winter. Each time I change the wheels I have to go back at the dealer to reprogram the sensors.I have a 2011 Nissan Quest. What tool or equipment do you recommend so that I can do that myself and not pay $20.00 each time ?
Friday, November 16, 2012 by Roger:
Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately we do not carry a TPMS Tool that can re-program your vehicle. I would suggest you check with Ateq at ateq.com to see if they might have something to offer.

Can i use my old monitor sensors(17 inch) with my new (20 inch) wheels ?
Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by Roger:
If your new wheels are TPMS compatible, you should be able to move your O.E. TPMS Sensors to your new wheels. However, we do recommend, that you replace the TPMS Sensor Seals when transferring the sensors to the new wheels. If your installer cannot supply the new TPMS sensors seals, we should be able to help!

I have an 06 BMW 325xi and wanted aftermarket wheels. In regards to tpms, if i buy from tire rack and have them installed, do they then need to be programmed to work with my car?
Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by Roger:
Thanks for your inquiry.

Your BMW uses the ABS Brake System to run the TPMS System as well. As such, no TPMS Sensors or Programming is required. Just bolt on your new tires and wheels and you are ready to go!

If you are placing an order online, please be sure to reference my name at the end of the order in the "Previous Contact" area, so that I can watch over the order as it processes.

Toyota Sienna 08, i replace the rims size 225x60r17 original toyota rims. I tried replace old sensor and it won't fit. Rims size is J17 X 6 1/2 JJ45. Plese let me know what is the right Pressure sensor work for this rim. Thanks
Friday, September 13, 2013 by Roger:
This can be a bit tricky on your vehicle. In order to help, I will need the complete make, model, and year of your Sienna. If it had steel or alloy wheels as O.E. and if the replacement wheels are steel or alloy. In addition, I also need to know if the vehicle came with run flat tires from the factory.

Best regards,

Roger

I have a Mini Cooper Base as well as a Countryman. I would like to buy summer rims for both but not sure if i would have to reprogam the TPMS when i switch between summers and winter?
Wednesday, October 23, 2013 by Roger:
You will need to reprogram the vehicle(s)each time you switch between summer and winter wheels as the vehicle will not automatically learn the sensors, however, the sensors can be registered following directions in owners manual. So no
dealership visit is required!

I have a 2013 Honda Civic with 215/45R17 from the factory. I would like to purchase 205/65/R15 winter tires(with steel rim), however, I am not sure if I would need to reprogram my TPMS sensor on the car if I was to purchase preinstalled ones from TireRack. Please help.

I am looking at getting a set of 14" steel wheels and winter tires for my wife's '12 Hyundai Accent SE. If I get them from you with the TMPS installed am I able to register the sensors at home like some of the replies posted above? Additionally are the custom sensor you sell programmable like the viper sensors available elsewhere so i could just get them with an ID that matches my current set?
Wednesday, December 18, 2013 by Roger:
If you purchase the O.E. TPMS sensors from us as part of a package, you will need to have your vehicle programmed by your dealer, or you may be able to purchase a hand held programmer for home use to do the job. Please note, we do not offer a hand held programmer for your vehicle. In addition, it may be possible for us to get cloneable sensors for your vehicle so no programming would be required. If you would like to pursue the colneable sensors, please feel free to give me a call.

I have some custom 20" 3pcs wheels and the valve stem is not the standard valve stem, however its a metal valve stem that is bent and designed to fit into 1 of the holes that holds the face bolts.

What do you suggest I use to keep the TMS functioning? The vehile is a 2014 Maxima.

George

That may be a real challenge! I would recommend that you check with your wheel manufacturer to see if the wheel was designed to be used with TPMS Sensors. If so, I would think they should be able to tell you if they have been able to find a sensor that will work with their wheels. They may also offer some type of valve stem adapter to work with your current TPMS Sensors and their wheels!

Best regards,

Roger
