245/45R16 Tire for Your Classic Porsche 911, 930, 944 or 928

Does your classic sports car need some classic sized performance tires?

While today’s sports cars have evolved to 17”, 18” and 19” diameter wheels, there was a time when 16” wheels and tires were the hot set-up.

If your 1980-1990s 911, 930, 944 or 928 has wide 16x9 rear wheels, you've probably had a hard time finding the appropriate 245/45R16 sized tires. So thank you Bridgestone for rolling out the  Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 in 245/45-16* to complement their existing 205/55R16 and 225/50R16 sizes.

245/45-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 $214*
245/45R16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 $215*
205/55-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 $163*
205/55R16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 $164*
225/50-16 Bridgestone Potenza RE11 $178*
225/50R16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 $180*

The Potenza RE-11 is the only real street tire in this size. All other 245/45R16 choices are Track & Competition DOT tires.

It's tested well across the board and drivers have been very happy with it. The tire is currently number one in the Extreme Performance Summer category in our survey results thanks to a good blend of dry grip, wet grip and cockpit comfort that enthusiasts can live with during day-to-day driving.

So if your old tires have some tread depth but their rubber is hard as cobblestones, it's time to change them. Now, you finally have a viable replacement choice.

Need two 225/50-16 and two 245/45-16 tires. Fuzion ZRi or Potenza RE-11 Thanks !

Ed, both Fuzion and Bridgestones (I remember speaking to you about the Bridgestones last May) have been discontinued in this set of sizes. There are no longer any Ultra High Performance, Max Performance or Extreme Performance tires in the 225/50-16 & 245/45-16 tandem.

The closest match to the RE-11's is the Track/Autocross Toyo RA1, see:

www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Toyo&tireModel=Proxes+RA1&frontTire=25ZR6RA1&rearTire=445ZR6RA1&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&affiliate=HK8

Compared to the Potenza RE-11's the Toyo RA1's will have similar dry grip but will trade-off some wet grip, tread noise, ride compliance and tread wear.

Thanks. Cy.

Cy,

Your blog is dated July 2012 and here we are June 2013 with no 245/45R16 tires anymore. That was a short run. Will Bridgestone bring the 245/45R16 back with the RE-11A introduced earlier this year?

thanks

Tom, Unfortunately at this point Bridgestone isn't planning on making 245/45-16 in either the RE-11 or the RE-11A.Cy

Hi Cy...I have a 1993 Nissan 300ZX and the stock TT wheels are 245/45-16. The Potenza's are awesome. It would be really good if Bridgestone would carry these again for those of us with older cars that keep the stock OEMs rims. Many thanks...Dwayne

Good news! Bridgestone has committed to making more 245/45-16 Potenza RE-11's. We're still working with Bridgestone to get pricing and arrival time. Cy.

Tom, Continental discontinued 245/45-16 awhile back and isn't planning on re-introducing this size. Cy.

Any word on arrival time of the 245/45/16 ra-11? Also do you know if this will be a short run or something more permanent?

Thank you,
Brad

Brad, we just received a batch in to our Indiana warehouse yesterday, expect to see them appear on our website this weekend, look for them here:

Since tire manufacturers are constantly evaluating which tires and sizes to produce, there's no way to predict future availability on rarer sizes. Thanks. Cy

Cy,

Please keep pushing Bridgestone to make these available! There are thousands of us with cars that run 245/45/16 tires who don't want to give up our stock wheels. You're our only hope!!

Neal, thanks for your feedback, we'll continue to encourage Bridgestone to keep rolling out 245/45-16's. Cy.

I notice an expected availability date of late December 2013. Is this still accurate? Do you know if the size up from this will fit? 255/50 x 16 R and 225/45 x 16 F? (Several options in that range)

If you’re running 225/50-16 & 255/50-16 now and everything fits fine I’d stay with that size tandem.

BF Goodrich makes G-Force Sport Comp-2 in these sizes and the Comp-2’s tested well across the board, see:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=192&affiliate=HK8

The width of your BBS wheels will be marked on the back of the wheel so if you see 16x9 that would confirm they’re 9” wide. 16x10’s would be too wide for 245/45-16’s, 16x9’s would fit but the edge of the wheel and the edge of tire will be parallel making easy to scuff the wheels.
Thanks.Cy
