Bought a set of these for my Subaru outback because I was not happy with the winter traction, braking and steering in snow with the all-season radials. The michelin winter tires transformed the car! Traction was improved, but the biggest difference is braking, straight line stability and cornering in snow or slush. With all season tires the subarus have a tendency to want to go straight in curves, not so with the winter tires, its like driving on a dry road. My confidence in winter driving increased greatly, to the point where I would have no hesitation to pass someone or drive faster in the snow than I could with the all season radials. The tires are a bit louder than ASRs and noisier when roads are wet, although the noise level decreased somewhat as the tires got more miles on them. I used these for winter only on a separate set of rims, so easily got 5 years out of them and they still have decent tread left on them!

I replaced the OEM tires with these DWS Extreme. First week, I hated it. The ride and handling doesn't seem right. It turns out I need to have qualified tire center to mount and balance. A co-worked told me to go to a performance shop to have it remount and balance with a Hunter road force balance machine. The ride and handling is much better (almost like a new car). I have taken my car to 145 MPH and I corner hard (70-80 MPH on exit ramps). These tires are great price/performance! A year and half ago, I ran over a tool that fell out of a truck on the high way doing 70 MPH. My left front tire was sliced on the side wall about 3" and some damage to the body. Within seconds, my car indicated low tire pressure. The car remains stable and I know I need to be careful. The tire held up and allowed me to take the next exit and park my car. I had that tire replaced. I may need a new set this fall if the "S" is faded out. If not, I should be able to keep it another year. The most important thing for me is finding a qualified place to do the mount and balance. This is KEY on performance cars and tires.
My friend installed a set of DWS Extreme Contact on his BMW 335. He made through this past winter in Michigan with his rear wheel drive (they had over 100" of snow for the season).

P.S. I noticed I lost about 1-2 MPG when I switch from the OEM tires to the DWS...the price I'm willing to pay for better traction.

I'm told Tire Rack do a great job on mount and balance if you buy tires and rims.

Went from the Star Spec to these and have blown alway my track times.Tto be honest I also went from the 7 inch wide rim with the 205 to the 9 inch wide 225 rivals. But a second difference on Jefferson 1.1 mile course is huge and feel it's more the tires then the increased width.

Went to a custom size to fit these on Redline rims. Luv these tires, got me thru another harsh winter (for Ohio) and lacking the time & $$ to invest in summer tires right now, as I've read previously here I will take them into the summer months & keep an eye on treadwear & performance. I have some twisty S-turn hilly roads in my commute & the Scorpions got me up & down those roads this winter with nary a slip. Can't wait to get these for my wife's car as well!

These are one of the BEST cold-weather tires & possibly all-season as well. Pirelli: Keep up the great work!

Have these on my 2003 BMW 330i with 18's (staggered 225/255)

great ride. plenty of traction in the dry and even better in the rain.

very quiet and smooth on the highway.

a little noisey on cold days but once they warm up they are quiet.

i feel confident in corners with these tires even more when its wet out. rivals pilot super sports imo

price is great for the performance you get

wear seems very respectable after about 14,000

sidewalls look great and even have a curb protector for your rims.

overall im happy and i would buy again.

Did lots of reviews on TireRack before making my purchase. Bought a set of 18" RX8 wheels for my mazda3 and needed a set of tires to go with. After extensive research these are the tires I chose.

First thing to note, the tires are concave, as in the rim is 'poked' out from the tire. i absolutely LOVE this. it makes the rims stand out much more than most cars on the road. Most cars have tires that are rounded outwards, and most tires have a 'rim gaurd' that protects your rims from road rash. Yes, you are more prone to scratching your rims with these tires, but i am a very careful driver and I make a point to avoid any scratching. The effect of these 'inward' tires portray is outstanding and i love looking at these rims every day.

Tread pattern is definitely neat.. asymmetrical but it looks cool compared to other conventional designs.

Third, this is my first set of brand new tires. I went from a set of Grand Touring Toyo tires to a lower profile Continental tire. I really have not much experience with other tires to compare or base my judgement on but i will say handling is like a charm. Sharp turns get cut thru like a knife thru butter, grip is excellent, not a lot of tire screech unless youre really pushing it. keeping them clean isnt a hassle, and the wear seems pretty good and i drive somewhat harder than most people.

Overall, im VERY happy with the purchase i made even though they were expensive. Never settle for cheaper tires, you get what you pay for and it really shows (my last car had cheap tires). Save up, do your research and buy a good set. They are an investment in your fun, and your health.

The New Hoosier A7 Versus the Hoosier A6

For many years, drivers looking for race-winning performance in an autocross tire turned to the Hoosier A6. Not only are Hoosier race tires high quality, competitive products, they're made right here in Indiana. Building on the success of the Hoosier A6 is the all-new A7.  

Hoosier's A7 is a DOT-legal slick tread design with alternating five-dash circumferential grooves interrupting the solid grip surface. In addition to the new look of the five-dash grooves, the A7 features a new tread compound designed to extend wear and useable heat cycles. The tire is also designed so that it has less “fall-off” during a long run and less degradation over the life of the tire compared to the previous A6 version.   

The tire's internal structure features a symmetric construction that uses two lightweight steel belts reinforced by a spirally wrapped circumferential nylon cap ply under the tread on top of two nylon cord casing plies. It features a rim recess design on all sizes. Goodyear has really hit the nail on the head with their On-/Off-Road Commercial Traction Wrangler DuraTrac. It's specifically designed for drivers of multi-purpose full-sized pickups, vans, sport utility and commercial vehicles looking for tires that work both on- and off-road. This review is a follow up to my review last year at 1000 miles. Now has 15000 miles on tires and can now say these are the best tires I have ever owned. Ride and handling are outstanding. No treadwear that I can see. Improved gas mileage of 2.5-3 mpg very impressive. Highly recommend purchase. Only negative is that I will be replacing this 07 R350 and the end of the summer and won't be able to buy Ecopia 422 as they don't come in a 19 inch 255/50 size rim of the 2012 R350

I upgraded my 08 Sierra with 18 inch wheels and these tires from the factory size rims and factory tires. I had a set of the Revo's (First gen) on my last truck and really liked them so I wanted to try them again. Overall I have no complaints, good ride, great traction, great wear (with rotation every 6,000 miles and air check every 3,000) The only downside I can say is between 30-40 mph there's a fair amount of tire noise. I know it's a bit agressive, it's no highway tire, its just enough to be noted here (although this truck is much quieter as a whole than my last so it makes it easier to hear noises like that... both diesels) I plan to keep running them without question and would suggest them to anyone that needs a tire thats good anywhere.

We first bought these tires for my wife's Toyota Yaris. These tires have a bead saver type edge/sidewall and they rubbed on her plastic wheel covers causing a squeak noise on slow speed turns. Kind of annoying. When taking off the snow tires this spring I installed them on the aluminum rims on our Neon and the squeak noise is gone. If you have wheel covers you might choose a different tire.
These tires drive great, they have real good wet traction and have a smooth quiet ride. Minimal wheel weights were used to balance them. This is the start of the second summer for them and they have very little tread wear showing yet.

The rears are 285/35ZR20. Yeah, I know these are summer tires, but I would expect SOME sort of capability in temps between 32 and 50 degress. These tires cannot be relied on for any kind of performance applications at these temperatures. All my comments refer to these temperatures and not summer temps. Even with moderately aggressive cornering, the tires act like they are going to pop off the rim. With pseudo heavy throttle, they have minimal traction. They break loose with just the slightest amount of power application. I would go with the Continental Extreme DWS if they had better sidewall rigidity. If you are going to stay with a summer tire on your supercharged Jag XF AND would like to do SOME driving in cooler temperatures, the Dunlop is not the answer. Consider Bridgestone or Michelin.

I must say that my love for these tires prompted me to write this post. I've had them for 13k miles now, through summer heat, heavy rain, 6-12" snow and on ice. These tires are great on a Toyota Venza. The original Good Year tires were ok but noisy, they also weren't as good in rain/snow/ice. When I put the parada spec-x on I was pleasantly surprised. What a difference in noise, much quieter!

RAIN: I also drove through a heavy rain/thunderstorm (yellow / red on radar), going about 50-55 on highway and not a slip! Hands down best tires I've ever driven in the rain!

SNOW: During the latest snow storm here in NE I decided to head up to Wachusett in the thick of it to take advantage of the snow day (12-18" of new snow, how can you not!). I drove on snow covered roads in up to 6 inches of snow at times & even over the plow buildup (12-18") on the highway... they were very predictable and impressed me. They got us to & from the mountain safely and we had a most excellent day of skiing!

ICE: I must also mention that on two occasions this winter I was taking corners and hit black ice. I could feel the car sliding towards the edge but I didn't panic & was able to keep from sliding off the ramp.

THE NEGATIVE: I have to be thorough so I need to mention that I too have a SLIGHT balancing problem around 70-75 mph but I wonder if these 20" rims are harder to balance or if it's the balancing machine the dealership uses. These tires also have huge sipes which is probably why they have great wet/snow traction but I frequently find small rocks stuck in them.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Buy them! I highly recommend these tires!

I bought this tire based on the November 2010 Consumer Reports article that put it in second place (tied for 1st in points) out of 17 tires in the Ultra-High Performance All-Season Tires Category. The price point was so low, too, among the cheapest available in 225/40-18 size to replace the two Dunlop SP Sports (front) and two Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires (rear) that came on the GTI I purchased used. Those tires had okay tread depth (not much on a tire of this size anyway) but the Michelins especially had severe weather cracking and the rolling noise of the four tires was very loud and non-uniform across the rotation (slipped radial belt, I figured). I liked that the Sumitomos were noted as being the quietest tire in the category by Consumer Reports--if they give up some performance for it, I haven't noticed.



They've indeed made a huge difference in noise and ride smoothness. I hope that lasts as the tires wear. Coincidentally we've had major snow and ice storms in Indiana since I put them on, and I'm impressed how well they do. Never felt out of control or immobile.



Basically my only gripe was with tirerack -- their competitor Vulcan Tire beat them by a few bucks on price, had cheaper shipping, and didn't charge me sales tax, so I went with them. Another possible gripe is that these tires don't have rim protectors, so be careful parallel parking. But otherwise these have not disappointed and I am picky about tires. If you drive more or less normally and like to step on it from time to time, I think you'll find these perfectly adequate, with low price and quiet ride (relative to the category) plus serviceable light winter traction to boot.

When I purchased the HTR Z II's I was looking for a reasonably priced, well performing tire. I got the reasonable price, but not the performance I was expecting. The appearance is the best quality this tire has. The dry traction is sufficent but even with my wider rims than OEM's, I don't feel 100% that the tire is going to hold. I did get caught in the rain one time and the wet traction was good. The other quality of the tire that should be noted is that performance is definately related to temperature. During hot summer days with road temps into the 100's, the tires feel great. When you drive them below 50 degrees, it becomes a bit sketchy. It's to be expected for this type of tire, but it's a little extreme to me. Overall, I'm OK with my pruchase but would probably go a different tire next time around.

Purchased four of these tires for an old 1995 Subaru Impreza L AWD daily driver. My main concerns for new tires was superior snow/ice handling, acceptable/above average wet handling, and above average dry traction with a great tread-life while keeping prices low. After I did extensive research and comparison charts I purchased the Firestone Precision Touring tires right as winter was in full force.

*In the snow/ice, the tires handle extremely well. I was driving around plow trucks with ease and mated with the AWD, was truly unstoppable this winter. Once the snow hit a few inches, the tires still gripped and when they did give way to sliding, were extremely predictable, allowing me to counter-steer with ease.
*Wet handling is acceptable, though not the greatest, but is not a reason to dismiss the tire, as it is still very predictable in those hazards.
*Dry traction and responsiveness are perfect with the only downside to cornering stability, which I believe is the weakest point of the tires. It can feel as if the tire would give way or takes a second to find the road when cornering. Despite this harsh review; it is actually on par with other tires for dry cornering in this price range.
*As to tread-wear, I cannot speak as to the performance of the category since I have not had the tires long enough.
*The comfort level is great. The tires take harsh bumps without any real complaints; in fact, I believe that I could have potentially bent a rim in lieu of popping a tire, of course due to the enormous potholes that plagued PA and DE (the Northeast Snow Belt area) this winter.
*Price - $77.00 a tire, which didn't break the bank for an old car but was well worth it.

Overall, I was looking for some affordable tires that would give me the best points of all-season tires, with increased winter time performance. The Firestone's came through and I will definitely purchase again, pending the outcome of the tread-wear. I would highly recommend them.

We needed affordable yet excellent performing winter tires for my wifey's SUV. In Canada these tires are almost twice the price, so we drive over the boarder and have them installed by one of Tire Racks suggested garages to save serious $$$. The tires do very well in our snowy winters in Southern Ontario. The best attribute of these tires are the communication it gives you. In the situation that it is loosing it's traction it is very progressive and predictable. The most surprising aspect of this tire is it's traction on ice, it's very very good. Road noise is surprisingly minimal given it's thick block tread design. Handsome looking, aggressive tire as well. One of it's only downfalls is it's cornering ability, it was very noticeably decreased in comparison to the OEM All Seasons. This is very negative is very forgivable given that it is a winter tire and it's aspect ratio is much higher on the 17" rim versus the 20" OEM All Season tires. I would highly recommend this tire to anyone who demands a excellent performer with a value price in mind.

While each truck is different and some can occasionally accept taller tires with the factory suspension in place, the easiest way to insure proper fitment of a taller or wider tire is to increase the amount of travel between the top of the tire and fender well.

Leveling kits increase the amount of clearance on the front axles between one and three inches on average and will often enable the owner to increase tire size without rubbing issues. Most trucks tend to have a rake from the factory that causes the front of the truck to sit lower in the front when the bed is unloaded. With a leveling kit, this rake can be corrected and clearances improved.
