When Looking for the Best Brake Rotors and Pads, Don't Forget New Brake Wear Sensors

Thursday, May 30, 2013 by Zig Ziegler

The brake wear sensor or brake wear indicator is an added safety feature on many vehicles that warns drivers if the brake pad friction material becomes too low. It's mounted on the back of the brake pad and the sensors monitor and determine the condition of the pads. Brake wear sensors alert the driver it's time to replace brake components with an audible chime or light on the dash. There's a small circuit embedded in the sensor mounted in the brake pad; when the friction material becomes too low the brake rotor wears through the sensor and cuts a circuit. This triggers the vehicle's computer to alert the driver brake service is needed.

tires performed well for the low price when new and up to 25000 mi. with 27k on them i'm seeing my traction control light come on when pushing the car a little bit on AWD car. wet traction has gone to poor when cornering or accelerating. snow traction has gone to below average. had a little snow/ice mixture and car failed to make a careful turn, had no braking and mowed down a stop sign on the opposite corner at 15-20 mph. had to replace tires.

Trying to Catch a Brake

Thursday, May 2, 2013 by Colin .

Last year my car's brakes started making that sound that lets you know a replacement was needed soon. Since I own a Toyota Avalon, I wasn't in the market for anything performance oriented. I opted for the Centric Plain 120 Series Rotors and Posi Quiet Ceramic Pads for the front and rear. The rotors and pads are Original Equipment replacements that would perform as good as or better than the factory original.

Are you looking for a different type of brake? Take a look at our slotted and drilled rotors for enhanced braking performance. Some are also cryogenically treated for improved durability.

Our pads range from Original Equipment replacements to performance oriented pads, such as StopTech's Street Performance Pads and Hawk's Performance Ceramic Pads. Depending on how aggressive the performance pads are, they will be dustier and noisier than your Original Equipment. However, they will enhance your vehicle's stopping power.

Is it time for the brakes to be replaced on your vehicle? Read "Brake Pad or Rotor Inspection & Replacement" for assistance on getting your new brakes installed correctly.

Initial Review, 35,000 Miles on Tires

This is a very impressive tire. It has great looks, performs well on and off road, and is even quiet.

I previously had different brand mud-terrain tire, which performed well off road, was very difficult to balance, and as the tread wore was horrible load. I have been pleasantly surprised at how quiet these tires are. It still has the traditional mud terrain hum, but the volume is turned way down. It's actually quieter than many AT tires out there.

I have driven this over ever terrain possible, and it performs admirably. The thing it does the worst on is wet pavement, and it still does that rather well. I have found that when it's rainy, I can expect a little loss of traction if I push it too much. But I have never felt unsafe. It certainly won't hydroplane with the tread depth on these tires.

Tread wear has been good, I think I will probably replace them at about 50,000 miles of use, which is far beyond most sticky mud terrain tires. One thing to note about these or most mud terrain tires, is that they are heavy. I upgraded my brake discs and pads to compensate for the extra weight these carry.

Overall I couldn't be happier!

For traction, braking, and cornering, it is hard to do any better. They make my Honda Accord handle like NASCAR. The downside to these tires is that they tend to cup or chop, whatever you want to call it. The result is very uneven wear and shorter tire life. I am replacing these with a different tire at 31,000 miles due to this issue. I thought it was my car, but after a lot of alignment and strut work, it did the same thing to this second set of tires. When the uneven wear sets in, the road noise becomes deafening.

Good tire used on road and off road, on the road good wet braking and cornering no hydroplaning even in heavy down pours. Good in the snow and light and deep both. Off road in the deep snow up to the sides of the 4Runner they worked well in 2WD. Did need to engage 4WD to get out of over a foot of deep snow while off road. It was while helping someone off the side of the road. Considering the design isn't an off road design they did pretty well. Tire noise is minimal and fuel economy was much better than the Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s they replaced. The 4Runner used to get 17 mpg in town driving after mounting the Conti's the mileage came up to 18 to 19 on avg in the summer. Used them for some off road in the desert and they did fine on National Park and State Part dirt roads. Some wash outs and sand gravel and rocks nothing serious. Not a real off road tire but a good one for what it's designed for street and highway and mild off road. This is only a 20000 mile report will see how they age and resist hydroplaning as the tread wears out. So far I'd strongly recommend this tire.

This was a replacement tire for the original OEM Goodyears that I replaced at just over 38,000 miles. To be honest I did not know what to expect as these replacement Bridgestones were around half the price of the OEM Goodyears. I was very suprised overall and continue to be with the wet braking performance in particular. They balanced up easily and the ride comfort is excellent. Although maybe not so off road capable as the original Goodyear Wranglers? they do have the same load rating. There is very little wear so far and it is uniform, I would not be suprised if these tires went welll over 40,000 too early to say of course! A very well balanced tire performance wise - in fact a delightful tire and made in USA! If you are mostly on-road do not hesitate to install these on your Land Rover or Range Rover!

Racing Technology Available for the Street: StopTech Big Brake Kits

Thursday, March 14, 2013 by Ben Rooney

When street cars go to the racetrack, the brakes are often the weakest link. While a street car's brakes usually only need to deliver maximum braking force from high speed on emergency occasions, a car on a racetrack uses maximum braking repeatedly, often with very little time to cool down. Overheated brakes quickly lose stopping power, which can lead to slower lap times and/or frightening moments.

Tire Rack has been carrying StopTech pads and rotors, and now we are pleased to add their Big Brake Kits. Available in rotor diameters from 322mm-380mm (12.7"-15"), they're available for a wide variety of performance-oriented applications. To check brake products available for your car, shop by vehicle

Engineered to the highest standards, StopTech emphasizes rigidity in their calipers for reliable performance under demanding conditions. Their calipers feature a patented bolt-in bridge that enhances stiffness and allows easy access to the brake pads for efficient pad changes.

The multi-piston calipers use differential piston diameters to precisely manage clamping force across the pad face. This minimizes uneven brake pad wear, particularly taper wear, for consistent performance over the life of the brake pads. The StopTech kits are vehicle-specific designs that maintain optimum brake balance and are 100% compatible with ABS and stability control systems. Calipers can be ordered in red or black finishes.

Two-piece rotors feature an iron ring under the brake pads for optimum heat dissipation with an aluminum hat to save weight. The iron outer ring is replaceable, while the center hat is retained and bolted to the the new outer ring. Rotors are available in slotted or drilled styles.

When upgrading your brakes, it's important to make sure that your wheels will fit the new, larger rotor and caliper. You may need bigger wheels than stock to fit the bigger rotors and calipers. StopTech has templates available to check the fit for your wheels. These kits are built to order, so please allow 2-3 weeks lead time when making your purchase.

If you're thinking about ordering a big brake upgrade, you can look forward to shorter stopping distances, greater fade resistance, better modulation and a firmer brake pedal. In addition, the big brakes with red or black painted calipers will enhance the appearance of your vehicle. They look especially good behind large diameter wheels with open designs. Take a look at our complete line of StopTech products

Tires gave me a lot of problems from day 1 when I bought the car. There was impossible to drive this car on highways with speeds 70 mph and up ** 350 miles on it , these tires were putting my Durango in so much vibrations that I had a feeling that car is going to faul apart ** dealer could not replaced them for any other brand so he was just trying balanced them. After balancing all set 5 times ( 3000 miles on tires) let say he finally did it I decided to keep them on but I am not driving faster then 80mph on highways. Overall it is decent tire , good handling and braking in 6" of snow, good wet traction, good dry traction. Over 25000 miles on this set and lots of tread left but I am sorry Goodyear I can not wait to switch to Michelins or Continentals.

I purchased these to replace the OEM Goodyear Integra, which were average but slippery. I had hydroplaning issues with those and slid on acceleration from stops on wet pavement. However, these Fortera TripleTreds are AWESOME. I need a good all-weather tire for my Pilot that I could use in bad weather at high speed on the German autobahn. I put them on in October and have gone through the fall and winter with them happily. They provide outstanding traction and stability in all conditions. I first noticed that they didn't slip on wet leaves or paint stripes when driving in town in the fall. I have since riven them in heavy rain, ice, and snow in town and at over 105 MPH on the autobahn. They perform perfectly at all speeds and vehicle weights and give me total confidence. They brake well, corner well even when loaded, and they are sure-footed cat's paws even on ice and snow. Sure, every tire will slide some if you turn sharply on glazed ice or brake suddenly on black ice; but these grip better than anything I've ever driven, on any vehicle. I trust my family's safety with them even at very high speed. I have also done anti-terrorist performance driving training. These TripleTred tires are what I want on my vehicle for max performance that could literally save my family's life. Even with shipping, they were cheaper to buy from Tire Rack and ship to a military APO than to buy autobahn-capable SUV tires in Germany. I will definitely buy them again.

OEM tires- great on the hwy, great ride comfort, low noise, very good in the rain and excellent braking, not so good in mud "duh" it's not a off road tire! The only weakness is tread wear replaced at 22,000. On a lighter truck with less power-as rear tires wear faster on the 5.7 ltr engine, though my sister has the same tire on her 4x4 Tundra short cab, 5 ltr engine and looks like she will get 40 to 50k miles on them. If it was not for the high wear I would have bought a second set with no hesitation!

Initial Review, 500 Miles on Tires
February 19, 2013

So I have this tire only for 500 miles, but I am writing initial review. Later, after several thousands miles I will do follow-up.
These tires are replacing horrible Kumho Ecsta Platinum LX tires I had on VW CC since I bought a car. Those were installed by dealer, so I thought, OK I will drive them untill I wear them out. What a mistake. After 12,000 miles two tires developed flat spots, started to coup, became extremely noisy. Anyway, after some 18,000 miles, of which 6,000 were pure torture, I decided that it was enough.
I got these Pilot Super Sport because I wanted summer tires, which is appropriate for European vehicle. In Europe, from where I am coming, cars come with summer tires not all season tires, and then in winter we switch to winter tires. Here in the U.S. it seems most of the people for some reason love all season tires.
Anyway, Michellin's were drastic improvement. I could feel improvement immediately in handling and braking. Improvement in handling was drastic, but in braking was amazing. The brake pedal now feels stiff, no changes in stiffness during driving like with Kumho's. Since I got Pilot Super Sport, ABS did not activate at all for now, although I drive spirited. Hard accelerations do not result anymore in spinning for no reason, and ride, oh well, it does not seem like I am driving any more on four rolling rocks.
I will do follow-up after 5,000, 10,000 and later. So far, they live up to their reputation.
Here in Southern California there are few rainy days, so I cannot say anything yet on the wet performance, but I believe it will be equally impressive.
If you plan to buy new performance tires, do no look further then Pilot Super Sport!

Absolutely magnificent tire!! Two days ago we had about 6 inches of snow and this tire just absolutely blew me away with how well it performed in the snow and ice. I kid you not, with my Camry, I could accelerate off of street lights as well as a 4x4 driving next to me. Stopping was no contest, I easily braked better.

As for wear, so far I'm almost 10K in and the tires show no wear whatsoever.

In the dry they aren't quite as sticky as the Sumitomos I replaced, nor are they as quiet, but in the wet they are about equal and in the snow there is no contest. The Sumitomos were not only bad, but dangerous and bordering on suicidal.

Comfort-wise the tires have a smooth soft ride, which probably explains the slight lack of steering response. They need a split-second to set up before they respond. Certainly nothing that is an issue in even spirited driving. On a track it might be a bit unnerving, but on the street its nothing to even think about.

Would I buy these again? As long as these are an option for a car I drive in all seasons, these will be on it!!!!

Initial Review, 25 Miles on Tires
August 27, 2012

I had to replace the Hankook tires in this brand new car after only 1,700 miles. My teenage daughter drove on top of a curve and severely damaged both tires on the driver's side.

Facing the decision, with the frustration of events, I decided not to replace like-for-like since I was already extremely disappointed with OE tires. I selected the Michelins based on the reviews and tests from TR.

Within driving off the store with the new tires, I was just in heaven. All of the sudden I felt I was in a great car!! No more bouncing around; no more feeling that the car was going to lift up after every bump; no more feeling that the tail was going to come around every time I turned a corner at low speeds; no more "empty can like" sound every time I hit a bump on the road.

Now the car drives securely planted on the road. Turns corners with an extreme feeling of grip and control. Braking is also much better!!!

Hyundai should install these tires as OE!!! I am sure people would pay the little extra!!

So, in order to apeace my mind towards my daughter, I decided to believe that her little accident was a sign for me to replace the OE tires in order to ensure her safety from now on!! Otherwise, I would have to ground her until she goes to college!!! LOL!!

The interesting thing was that my daughter, with only months of driving experience, was also complaining about the OE tires. She told me she did not feel safe with them.

I will post an update later once I get more miles in different conditions and also can evaluate gas mileage. That is assuming that my daughter does not have any other serious "event" with the car (--- help us!!!)

December 29, 2012

These tires were new on our 2008 Toyota Highlander at time of purchase in early 2010 (used vehicle). They are very quiet, and fuel efficent, since they have such a shallow tread depth, even when new. At 32000 miles though, they are nearly worn out - and coming into winter here in PA I should probably replace them. All I can say is thank goodness this vehicle has full time AWD, traction control, and antilock brakes. In rain, or any bit of snow (even when they were new) they are helpless. 2 weeks after we got the car (tires were NEW!), my wife thought she would go to work before I blew the 10" of snow off the driveway, and got her poor new Toyota stuck in our driveway with all 4 tires spinning on the level! I had to use her old car (a 1996 S10 Blazer, which I now drive) with 3-yr. old BFG ATs (with over 40K miles on them!) to drive around her, and hook to the back to pull her out (like the snow wasn't even there!)... Im STILL running the BFGs on that car, with over 60K miles on them, and they still have 30-40% of their tread left, are still doing well in the snow, and cost less than these... guess what brand I'm putting on her Toyota next...

I had replaced my OEM Wranglers HP's with Bridegtsone Alenza's when my Element had 28,000 miles on it. While the braking was great on the Alenza's, the ride on local roads was terrible. You could feel every bump on the road. Bridgestone gives a 30 days ride guarantee, which I decided to do. I debated between the General Grabber HTS and the Continental ContiCrossContact LX. I was leaning towards the Continentals until I spoke with an Engineer at Continental. Continental also makes the Generals. He said that the Generals utilized the latest and greatest tire compound that they had. With his comments, Tire Rack's recommendation and Consumer Report's #1 rating, I decided to try the Generals. So far, I am very pleased with the tires and would highly recommend them. The ride is very good and the tires seem to perform well. Hopefully they will last 50,000 to 60,000 miles.

Initial Review, 4,000 Miles on Tires
December 18, 2012

My daily commute is about 40 miles, all highway, in Dallas, Texas. I am also a HPDE instructor for about nine weekends a year. These tires replaced Bridgestone RE-11s after about 20,000 miles of highway and frequent track use. The RE-11s replaced the OEM Bridgestones (7,000 miles). The Michelins are my daily driver and track rain tire. I occasionally use them for dry track days if I am unable to transport my track tires to the venue. I'm impressed by the tires' exceptionally low weight compared to the RE-11, Advan Neova AD08, and Star Spec. I also appreciate their excellent combination of dry/wet handling. On the track in dry weather (TWS and MSR-Cresson) they do not overheat, and they are very progressive and predictable. They do not feel greasy when hot, like the RE-11. In the wet they are exceptional. MSR-Cresson is like ICE on the old 1.7 mile section, and on the wet line these tires maintained grip better by far than did the RE-11s. After re-aliginging my car for negative camber of 1.7 all around, max. postive caster, total front toe out of 1/16", and total rear toe in of 1/16", I found these tires to have excellent turn-in grip, and they held very well at the limit in mid-corner with no excessive slipping during mild oversteer. On rotation corners with trail braking I again found them very predictable with a good combination of slip and grip. I would definitely buy these tires again. What sold me on them was the August 2012 Car & Driver article comparing these tires to my other favorites and seeing their overall superior rating. I can now say that I completely concur with the results of the testing, as the article states.

Initial Review, 1,000 Miles on Tires
November 29, 2012

I bought this tire to replace a worn-out set of three-year-old Yokohama IG-20s. They are very quite on the highway (for a winter tire), slightly better fuel economy than my summers (probably due to cold weather and non runflat), and braking is unbelievable on snow and ice. I was recommended these because they have a 55,000 km treadwear guarantee, so we will see how they last. Pulling away from a stop on snow covered roads still makes the traction control activate, but once moving they are very stable. Only a more aggressive snow tire on the rear would be better at low speed grip. Starting in 2nd gear does help somewhat. I will provide an update at the end of the winter.
