These are the only tires I will put on my car, great handling, wet and snow traction, and wear is great, 1.5 years on my steering tires, and at 2 years on my rear tires. At 25,000 miles a year usage. Car has 127,000 miles on it.

On the car they look small, but the weather has been terrible this year and this has really made me appreciate them. The traction and handling have been great. It's hard to break it loose. For that you need a fast turn in heavy snow or on ice. At ten thousand miles I haven't noticed any tread wear.

Haven't really had enough miles to rate these tires fairly, so the rating is based upon the short time we've had them on the car. We have had a slight bit of adverse weather, some ice, some snow, but not really a great chance yet to check them in any kind of serious accumulation. I typically run Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip's for the winter season, but was required to go this route due to funds. So far, my wife and I have found the Dunlops to ride comfortably and perform very well. We both love driving, and purchased our Pontiac G8 to enjoy our time on the road. We tend to push our cars just a tad harder that the average driver might, so cornering and steering response are a big deal. These tires respond very well considering what we like to ask them to do. The Dunlops are definately helping us to enjoy the winter driving experience.

Keep in mind these tires went on a light 2 wheel drive car and they are all season tires. I was looking for a tire that would get a Pontiac Vibe out of the barn during northern Indiana winters without going to full blown winter tires. First of all, this is the 4th set of tires I have had on this vehicle and I put them on in the summer. They absolutely ROCKED! The best ride all around this car has ever had. It was like driving a totally different vehicle. Then came old man winter and these brutal Polar Vortexes. Once again, this is a low clearance 2 wheel drive car and NO tire will be a lifesaver on ice unless you get a studded one. Regardless, I have been impressed. I haven't gotten stuck in any snow that the car didn't bottom out on. I have not have any slide outs much less any slide offs. It obviously can't compete with my 4x4 Jeep and I obviously have to drive like I am on snow and ice and not like the idiots you see on the evening news, but odds are that I will replace them with the exact same tires when these wear out. Plus, they make them just a few miles up the road from my house so I am supporting the local economy!

Initial Review, 70,000 Miles on Tires
December 13, 2013

I have a vintage Pontiac Firebird with original 14 inch steel rally wheels as my daily driver (12,000/yr). In 205/70R14 there is almost no selection left and nothing with a legitimate speed rating (H-speed or higher). While they are only 'T' speed rated (which doesn't say much) they were the only tires in this size with an 'A' temperature rating - unheard of in this speed rating class. That at least suggests a stronger and better tire than the typical so-called S or T speed rated junk. Encouraged that they had the A temperature rating (and have no better option to consider) I tried them almost 6 years and 70,000 miles ago.

Waaaaay better than any tires this old car had worn in recent memory! Not exactly an autocross tire but overall performance was very competent. Dry traction has been great. Wet traction has also been good, only started trailing off a little in the last 10,000. Reasonably quiet. Sidewall flex is a little bit much but then it is a 70 series tire and I could not find any better options. Tread life has been fantastic hitting 70,000 miles! I could have probably squeezed another 5,000 or 7,500 but it was getting close to the wear indicators and wet traction was beginning to diminish due to lack of tread depth. Based on past experience the BFG Radial TA is purely for cosmetics by comparison and otherwise isn't in the league of the Altimax RT and yet it's more expensive.

In 205/70R14 at least it is THE tire to get. I'm almost wondering why it didn't achieve an H speed rating.

I've run Blizzaks as winter tires for years, but I have not been happy with the high noise and poor performance on dry pavement. So after seeing the positive reviews on tirerack for Altimax Arctics, I decided to buy a set.

I am so glad I did. These winter tires are as quiet as my summer tires. During hard stops on dry pavement, the Altimax tires grip where the Blizzaks would lose traction. My ABS activates much less frequently. Directional stability is much improved as well.

These tires truly shine in the snow. Their performance in deep snow, packed snow, and even ice is beyond amazing. I live near the mountains in Colorado, and we get lots of deep snow. I've managed to get out of my neighborhood in my front wheel drive car while my neighbors with all wheel drive cars, SUVs struggled to even get out of their driveway. These tires perform far beyond their price point. Buy a set allready!

Way better than the BFG Advantage I had, this is hard to say because I have two family members that work there. I am really impressed with these tires. Very good wet traction. Very good dry, could be better but with 300hp its not better unless I get race tires. I am really impressed with the grip in the snow, the BFG's I would just slip and slide all over. Even my wife noticed a huge difference and she knows nothing about cars, I mean nothing, lol. I have not gone on the highway much but don't hear anything cruzing through town. I have P Zeros on my Camaro and now on my GTP. I will be looking for a set to put on the CTS now! Buy these is you live in a mixed climate you will be very happy.

I am an aggressive driver but these have very poor traction in any condition. The are the worst in the snow and water. The first set I had were the G-force, I went through those in about 6k and got these. At 20k these were covered in cracks, the worst being where the tread meets the sidewall. They had about 25% tread left but I could not put up with them any longer. Very disappointed in these tires and would not recommend!

I drive aggressively and mostly highway, I go through a set of these once a year I get 35K then I replace them even though they are rated for 40K. This is my second pair and I have no complants. The ride is a bit firm but the trade off is the handling at higher speeds and cornering and for the money you can't beat it. Better tire then the others in the Contintal tire line up for more money. I rotate and balance the tires every 6000 miles. I don't drive this car in the winter

I purchased a set of these tires for my Trans Am to use for regular driving and some autocross. They are a great tire for both wet and dry driving, I am continually surprised by how much traction they have in wet weather. They have worn down more slowly than I initially expected. Plenty of grip for any street driving, although not high enough dry grip levels to be a "true autocross tire." The tires still performed well in competition, although long hot days would cause the tire to get somewhat greasy. (At an autocross)

I have driven on these tires in colder temps, and they still do okay. Being a summer tire, I have not tried them in snow.

These tires feel very confidence inspiring. They let you know when you are approaching the limits of adhesion, and I have gained a great deal of confidence in the handling of my vehicle.

I would definitely buy these tires again.

Ok, so I've only got 1,100 miles on these so far. The road noise is a little more then I thought it was gonna be but the improved traction and ride comfort over the OEM tires makes up for it. They are a little bouncy in the morning but I'll wait to see if that improves when the temps start to go up around here. I'm assuming the rubber is stiff from the cold. Tends to get better as you drive. All in all a decent tire for the money.

I purchased these tires based off of the Tirerack Test and I have not been disappointed. We replaced our 7 year old Michelin HydroEdge tires with 60,000 miles on them with these General Altimax RT43 tires. The Michelins had hardened up over time and were incredibly loud and rough. These Generals have been quiet, smooth, and have about the same handling characteristics of the Michelins. For the money these Generals seem to be a great deal. Time will tell if they hold up well.

I purchased these tires off Tire Rack based on their reviews being pretty good and I have to say, I am so glad I did! I've only put 5,000 miles on these tires but they've been put through all the paces... dry weather, wet weather, and deep snow conditions and they DO NOT disappoint! Dry traction is PERFECT, I have no issues taking freeway on-ramps going MUCH faster than I should be and they just grip. Wet traction is phenomenal. I recently put it through some paces in the rain; cornering and braking. Cornering isn't perfect but very good for what the tire is. Braking on the other hand, I can barely tell that it is raining because they stop so well. Finally we just got our first major snowfall since I purchased them and again, performed absolutely great in the snow. Has no issues getting going and at speed you can barely tell theres snow on the ground. I've even taken my car through un-plowed side streets where I should have gotten stuck but didn't. These tires offer the performance of a much more expensive tire at a much lower price. I will never buy another set of tires again unless it's a set of these. WOULD RECOMMEND!

Initial Review, 45,000 Miles on Tires
April 24, 2013

I've worn out two or three sets of the predecessor of this tire (Turanza Serenity) and after having gone through numerous other tire brands Michelins, Yokohamas, Goodyears, have to say that this tire is the best of those by a significant margin. These tires offer very good cornering grip... amazing actually. Great wet and dry traction and decent traction in snow and ice. Where they really shine is ride quality, comfort and noise level.

Bear in mind that I rate this tire as what it is... a Grand Touring Tire. It won't compete against special purpose tires but neither will they match this tire for this intended use. Unless you can use the last 10% to 15% of the performance that high performance tires offer you will be FAR, FAR happier with a tire such as this. The difference in comfort and combined performance will serve most drivers better the majority of the time. (As a footnote... I own and drive two Trans Ams, two Corvettes, a Grand Prix GXP, and other assorted cars). I have run high / ultra-high performance tires on those cars and unless I'm pushing the edge of the envelope, these tires perform more than adequately.... and they are FAR more comfortable over potholes, expansion joints and they don't drone you to death with tread noise.

One BIG side benefit not usually thought about is that these tires give me 45K miles +/- of wear and I replace them before they get down to the wear bars. So... while I'm wearing out HP and Ultra-HP tires at 20-25K miles I'm only at the halfway point of having to replace these. So... they save a lot of money up front and again over the far greater lifetime.

I love these tires and will be ordering my next set in the next week.

Good luck in your choices... but if I might make one suggestion it would be this. Look very carefully at what you NEED in a tire for the majority of your driving... and don't overestimate your need for that final 10% of performance. Most people never even get close to using that final 10%.

High Mileage Tire Offering from Michelin

Tuesday, May 21, 2013 by Marshall Wisler

Michelin, one of the most respected names in the business, has always been a brand that's associated with excellent wear and long treadlife. While the company previously offered the Harmony and HydroEdge with Green X with 80,000-mile or higher treadwear warranties, these products have been consolidated and replaced with the Defender. Like its predecessors, the Defender has been extremely well received in regards to excellent treadlife, low noise and a good ride.

The Defender is available in 38 sizes to fit many of today's passenger cars and light-duty crossover vehicles. It features a 90,000-mile treadlife warranty and has proven itself as a capable all-season option. Currently ranked as the top tire in the Standard Touring All-Season category, the Defender receives high marks in the following areas:

  • Dry Traction
  • Steering Response
  • Ride Comfort
  • Treadwear
  • Hydroplaning Resistance
  • Cornering Stability
  • Wet Traction
  • Noise Comfort

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the Michelin Defender:

"These are the best tires I have ever purchased. They run quiet and have a soft ride. There is no slipping or sliding on turns and they feel like they are glued to the road." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2010 Toyota Prius IV

"Fantastic tire. Definitely the best tire I have ever had. Extremely quiet, stable and a great ride." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2003 Pontiac Vibe

"The Defenders are quiet and have amazing traction in Oregon rain. No hydroplaning and I get 36 mpg on the freeway. They are on our 2009 Toyota Camry XLE. I'm now buying them for our Cadillac! I have never been more pleased with a tire purchase." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2009 Toyota Camry XLE

Initial Review, 5,000 Miles on Tires
April 07, 2013

I have always prefered a Michelin tire, and have had great service from them over the years. The prices are high, and I have wondered if part of that is paying for the name? A few years ago, we purchased a new truck with General tires on it, and the tires performed flawlessly. In fact those 11 year-old Generals were are currently on a farm trailer, and show no signs of dry rot, or other problems. After much thought, I decided to give these Generals a try. These tires are very quiet and smooth. They have great resistance to hydroplaning, which is a feature that I like a lot. The tires are not great in the snow, but than a V-8 powered RWD car is not so great in the snow either. I have a designated AWD winter vehicle, so winter traction does not matter to me. We live in the mountains with lots of winding roads, and tires get punished around here. I have the car set up with a stiff aftermarket suspension, so it rides harsh and corners like a sports car. The car no longer handles like a traditional Crown Victoria. Infact this car has seen an AutoCross track more then once... The OE tires where very soft and the car had a tendency to oversteer with them on it. These tires take the curves very well. So far they have passed the test. I plan to purchase three more sets, one for my wife's Crown Vic, and two sets for our two vintage Pontiac Trans AM show cars. For the price, nothing else compares. General seems to have hit the mark!

I bought these tires for their price and decent reviews. It is a great tire in the winter and after 20,000 miles the tread has been great for this past snowy winter in Mpls. I think my mpg has reduced a little compared to the OE Goodyear RS-As, but the winter traction has been impressive as well as the amount of tread still left after 20k miles. For a similar vehicle (hatchback, small SUV, etc.) I would purchase again.
