Initial Review, 90,000 Miles on Tires
May 04, 2012

I bought these dang things 8 years ago at 156K my truck has 249k now the tires could still go another 10k in a pinch. They have been on the truck so long the sidewalls are starting to crack. They handle great super smooth for a all terrain. Noise is tolerable. Treadwear is phenomenal. Only one had to be patched because of a nail. The best tire I have ever owned and I have worn out about 10 pickups in my life. I am peeling these off and buying another set just like them. The only tire I will ever buy besides the All terrain KO.

Load Range E 10-Ply Tires for Heavy Duty Use

Monday, May 14, 2012 by Gary Stanley

In a recent blog post titled "Goodyear Marathon Radial vs. Power King Towmax STR Trailer Tires," I covered the difference between two trailer tires we carry. Now, what about the tires used on the trucks to pull those trailers? Many full-sized pickups and cargo vans require load range E tires. If your pickup truck or van is a 2500 or 3500 (commonly called 3/4 ton or 1 ton), your vehicle falls into this category.

Load range E tires are the equivalent of the older 10-ply rated tires and are often still referred to as such, even though tires no longer have 10 actual plies in them. Regardless of what you call them, Tire Rack has what you're looking for. Below are two of my favorite recommendations for premium load range E tires:

Michelin LTX MS2
Michelin LTX M/S2
Michelin LTX AT2
Michelin LTX A/T2

If you're someone who does mostly street driving with some light off-road use and requires light snow capability, I would recommend the Michelin LTX M/S2. This tire is currently the top-rated option in its category according to our customer survey data and the customer reviews are outstanding.

"I just put these tires on the Yukon. I knew they would be good tires, I had no idea they would transform my vehicle. It rides like new! A Yukon Denali already rides well for its size, but this rubber, you'd swear it was a Cadillac!" -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2005 GMC Yukon Denali XL

"Best set of tires I've ever owned. The only thing better would be riding on a cloud of air." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 2wd

If you need a tire with a bit more off-road capability or desire a more aggressive tread pattern for cosmetics, then consider the Michelin LTX A/T2. This tire also offers better snow traction and the LTX A/T2 stands out for reliability, wear, wet traction and ride quality.

"Two snow seasons in Tahoe and tons of additional highway, city and off-driving - this is an awesome tire! When this set is gone, I will for sure get another." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2004 GMC Yukon 4wd

"I will likely buy another set when these wear out. I am impressed overall and really like how they handle the load when I have my 3,500 lb. camper on the truck. Awesome tire." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD 4wd

These tires are excellent. The OEM BF Goodrich were horrible. I then went to a set of Fusion's which looked really great with the flame sidewall and rode and handled ok. These tires are great. The ride is much better, quiter and softer but responsive. They handle well in the rain also. I have them blackwall out since my truck is black and chrome. I also went bigger than the OEM rims. The taller height and width still are handled well witht this tire. I run dedicated snows in the winter on the OEM rims so I have no snow comments. As far as better gas mileage, come on let's be honest. I have a 6000 lb pickup, my mileage is what it is. But these tires are worth the price and you will enjoy them. A definite rebuy.

The All-New Firestone Destination LE2

Tuesday, May 1, 2012 by Hunter Leffel

For years, the Firestone Destination LE has been a favorite in the line-up for SUV and light truck applications. Since 2001 the marketplace has changed from a light duty pickup truck dominated arena to a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) dominated market segment. A corresponding change in tire demands has also occurred. From primarily utility focused for the pickup, to a quiet and comfortable ride with good handling for the CUV owner. Firestone recognizes this change by releasing the second-generation Destination LE2

A bold new sidewall design looks great on everything from the traditional pickup truck to the newer CUVs and premium SUVs. The tread pattern has evolved to utilize the latest in tread design and tire construction. With a primary focus on ride and character of the newer vehicles in the marketplace, the tire's tread pattern has been optimized through noise sequencing to provide noise reduction. The footprint has also been computer optimized, which aids in even contact pressure, a quiet ride and even treadwear. A closed shoulder design also assists in even treadwear and the desired ride. This feature provides stability in cornering, too. Circumferential grooves along with the sweeping slots move water out from under the tire. Additionally, zigzag sipes provide cutting edges for ice, snow and wet traction. Rolling resistance has been improved to provide better fuel economy through the use of silica. It also helps to provide consistent grip in the wet through the life of the tire.

Destination LE2 tires are the first tire line to achieve Firestone's eco-product status for improvements over its predecessor.

  • Improved rolling resistance*
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Lower weight - reduces raw material use
  • Longer lasting

View all available sizes to see if the Destination LE2 will fit your light-duty pickup, van, crossover or sport utility vehicle.

*A 15% reduction in rolling resistance compared to first-generation Destination LE for an approximate 2% improvement in vehicle fuel economy

Initial Review, 500 Miles on Tires
April 20, 2012

I just installed these tires within the past few days and have only put just under 500 miles on them. When they arrived, I noticed they were pretty light and had a flexible sidewall considering they were going on a light duty pick-up. This was to be expected since it's technically designed as a passenger car tire. I didn't want to a) spend a lot on a premium tire for my older pick-up and b)want an overly stiff truck tire that would sacrifice the ride. I opted for the Khumo KR21 given the price and both having good personal experience w/ the brand in the past and hearing positive remarks from others... Once the tires were mounted on the truck I was totally pleased. With 32 PSI the sidewalls stayed firm (no sag) and the tires ran very sooth down the highway. They are incredibly quiet, smooth & cushioning, and handle quite well. There is no wander at the wheel. I have had no chance to experience the performance on wet surfaces or in in-climate weather, nor have I had enough time to rate the tread wear. For those of you out there with light pick-ups looking for a decent tire for a reasonable bargain, try the KR21.

I have been looking to put some tires on my truck but i have not decided yet but I have had the Firestone R4S on my other truck and they where a good all around tire on my 1994 chevy k1500 4x4. Also tried the Firestone AT had good handling with both. Firestone should have kept both and corrected the so called caseing problem. As for the person who said his tires where smoking after a long haul probably had too much weight on axle aka overloaded are draging brakes that heated everything up. I drive a 18 wheeler and yes tires do get hot but not smoking unless brakes or draging. As for all the cracks in sidewalls a deeler showed me 4 tires they tested 2 where left alone 2 had tire treatments to sidewalls guess what, the ones being treated had cracks!!! I have had other tires brands but after seeing how much weight it took to ballance the tire made me wish i had stayed with Firestone. after all when you can drive a pickup your dad gave you with 37000 miles on it at 8+ years on the r4s when i got it. and it had over 1/2 the tread left. So yes I will be buying Firestones this Summer to go on truck that i just got.

Looking for the Best Value in a Street and Road Tire for Your Truck or SUV?

Monday, March 26, 2012 by Alex Mouroulis

Most truck owners never intend to take their vehicles off-road. Highway All-Season tires offer the benefits of a quiet, smooth ride. They provide excellent mileage and good grip in water and light snow conditions. These tires are built essentially for crossover and sport utility vehicles, as well as pick-up trucks and full-size vans. The following tires are a few of our top sellers in the Highway All-Season category and provide an excellent value.

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experiences with these tires:

"The Destination LEs came O.E. on my 2006 Explorer and I currently have 65,000 miles on them. I'll be replacing them soon with another set of LEs, but could probably squeeze another 3,000-4,000 miles out of them. I've been completely satisfied with these Firestones." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 2wd (Firestone Destination LE)

"After 45,000 miles I could not be happier. Still have plenty of tread and the ride is as if the tires were new. I would not hesitate to buy another set based on this experience. By the look of things, I may get 70,000 plus, not bad for a truck tire." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2005 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR5 2wd (General Grabber HTS)

"I really like these Yokohamas. Good traction in dry weather. Ran into a horrible thunderstorm a couple of days ago and these tires performed like a champ. No hydroplaning." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 1998 Ford F-150 XL 2wd Pick-up (Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G051)

I equipped one of my vehicles with a set of Firestone Destination LE for a few years and enjoyed the tire's performance. To see which tire is right for your vehicle, shop by vehicle.

Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology Getting Rave Reviews and Awards!

Monday, March 5, 2012 by Steve Huffman

In 2011, Continental introduced their new Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season tire, the Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology.

The CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology is an ecologically friendly option developed to help crossovers, sport utility vehicles and light-duty pickup trucks perform on the highway and in mild off-road conditions. CrossContact LX20 tires are designed to enhance driving pleasure, save fuel and maintain grip when braking on wet surfaces, all while providing long wear and all-season traction, even in light snow.

The tire ranked first during our testing and is near the top in our Tire Survey Results. SEMA even awarded the Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology as the 2011 winner of the "Best New Tire and Related Product."

Here's a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the tire:

"Since changing to the Continental tire, the road noise has been reduced in the cabin. It is a more comfortable ride than the stock tires and my MPG has increased slightly. I expect it would be greater with some longer trips. I highly recommend these tires." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid

"Great tires. I enjoy driving my Cadillac SRX again. Noise level was substantially reduced." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 Cadillac SRX 2WD V8

January 29, 2012

I only had this tire for a few months due to selling the vehicle. Snow traction was only good in 4x4. Average, at best, in 2wd. Little to no traction on ice in 2wd. Again, in 4x4, they did fine and got me where I needed to go. Also, mud traction, in maybe a half foot of mud, they did well. They're definately not a "bogger" type tire, but they did awesome for what I was in for. Never got stuck. The crevices in the tire WILL fill up with material though (snow, mud). I never hydroplaned in any semi-deep pools of water. They did very good on the street. The noise is a bother though. I bought these in hopes that they'd be much quieter than an offroad use tire, and have similar road noise to an all season tire. You don't notice anything really below 60mph, but once you're at 75+ it's not pleasant. But what can you expect from an All Terrain tire? My driving on these tires for the 1800 miles I had them were pretty rough. Never noticed even a slight diminish of the tread before I sold the truck. Overall, it's a good tire for what it's made for, but not all around as I'd have used it.

I put these on two years ago and been through two Chicago winters with them. They've made me feel confident in snowy weather in my 2WD pickup. While I don't have as good of traction as a 4x4, I think it's really down to not having weight in the back. Highway driving is a dream, these tires soak up the small bumps, I almost feel like I'm not driving a truck anymore, it feels very car like. I can corner really good, I've been pushing the limit of my own conscience and so far, it just grips with minimal tire squeal. I would defiantly buy these tires again.

This is my second set and I will be getting a different tire next time. I use this truck off road 70% of the time and these tires are good off road with the exception of heavy mud. (treads do not clean well) My biggest complaint is hydroplanning and wet road conditions. I pull a horse trailer & my tractor at times and if its wet watch out and leave 2x normal room to stop.

Had the tires on for a few months now on my 86 Toyota pickup. They ride very nicely but are a bit noisy at highway speeds. Nothing really that bothers me however. In the dry they are perfectly acceptable and in wet they have a lot of traction. Hydroplaning resistance is very good as well. They seem to evacuate water from beneath themselves very well. I live north of Seattle so its important here. We also just got a good bit of snow, some really sloppy wet stuff. The tires handled themselves extremely well. Much better than the all-seasons I had on last year. Even with the truck being only 2wd it went through everything with some weight in the back. Overall I am very pleased with these tires. A VERY good value for the money. I would absolutely buy them again.

Wheel Spotlight: KMC XD Series Rockstar

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 by Ben Rooney
KMC XD Series RockstarThe Rockstar has been one of the most popular wheels in the KMC XD Series lineup. Its classic five-spoke design combines with a deeply concave face and unique 'floating' center cap for a look that is both distinctive and aggressive. Having seen these wheels on trucks in our parking lot, I can definitely say they stand out.

Available to fit a wide variety of trucks and SUVs, the wheel's wide widths and negative offsets are available to accommodate many lifted applications with oversized tires. It is available in diameters up to 24" and widths as wide as 12". Not all widths and diameters will be available for every vehicle application, but there are a broad range of fitments from which to choose.

The wheel also comes in a version for dually pickups. Read a prior blog post of mine for details on custom wheels for dually trucks, as well as a photo of the Rockstar in the dually version. That version has a somewhat different appearance due to unique fitment requirements.

Besides the black painted version shown above, the Rockstar is also available in a chrome and machined with black accent finish. As with any of our wheels, you can shop by vehicle to see which truck rims are available to fit your application.

(Studs not used)-Driving feels a little "truck-like," but we love this tire. These inspire confidence on dry, wet, and frozen surfaces, in city commutes and interstate road trips. Previously we used Blizzak WS-60 tires, and were extremely happy with them. These are quieter, and perform comparably on winter surfaces. My wife recently found herself having to drive on a narrow, twisty, hilly, ice-covered highway with open water to the sides. She crawled along slowly, but was amazed how well the tires kept her stuck to the road. Her farmer brother was amazed by their performance on our CR-V, and wants some for his pickup!

Studded Winter / Snow Tires: General AltiMAX Arctic

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 by Gary Stanley
With winter upon us, now is a great time to buy a set of winter / snow tires!

Most drivers tend to use Studless Ice and Snow or Performance Winter / Snow tires. However, we carry a selection of Studdable Winter / Snow tires for those who are after a traditional studded snow tire set-up.

While their name would suggest tires in this performance category can only be used with studs, they can actually be used without. In fact, the General AltiMAX Arctic is a great entry-level Studdable Winter / Snow tire that has very good snow and ice traction without studs. The chart below shows how closely the unstudded General AltiMAX Arctic compared to the studded version in our test, "Winter Testing at the Arctic Circle: Studdable Winter / Snow."

Winter Testing
Designed for the drivers of coupes, sedans, minivans, passenger-oriented light duty pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles who are looking to enhance wintertime traction, the AltiMAX Arctic offers high levels of traction at low temperatures. Featuring General's All-Weather Dual Tread compound, the tire is developed to enhance cold weather flexibility and wet traction. General AltiMAX Arctic tires meet the industry's severe snow requirements and are branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol.

It's important to note that there are special break-in procedures for studded tires and to find the instructions, read "Studded Tire Break-In."

Tire Spotlight: Mud Tires

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2

M/T
Dick Cepek Crusher
Dick Cepek
Crusher

Currently rated at the top of our survey results is the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2. BFGoodrich is one of the biggest names in off-road traction and for good reason. They have years of experience building tires for off-road racing as well as the consumer market. The KM2 incorporates some of the best attributes of the old T/A KM, along with some of the technology and design of the more specialized Krawler T/A. The result is a tire that excels in a wide variety of off-road conditions.

A perennial favorite and currently rated second in our Tire Survey Results, is the Firestone Destination M/T. An aggressive tread pattern comprised of deep lugs and aggressive side biters combines with surprisingly good road manners to make a set of Firestone SUV tires (also designed for pickup trucks) that have been extremely popular and successful. For additional traction on ice and packed snow, the Destination M/T can be studded.

My personal favorite in the category is the Dick Cepek Crusher. The skull and bones tread pattern is certainly not for the introverts of the world, but it's both fun and effective. Available exclusively in extra large sizes aimed primarily at off-roaders and lifted vehicles, there has not been enough miles reported on this tire for it to show up on our survey averages. So far, the customer feedback that we have received is almost universally positive. A set of these Dick Cepek tires combines exceptional traction and off-road prowess with noise and road manners that are by no means subdued, but more civilized than their wild appearance might imply.

January 04, 2012

Wow, what a tire. I Just purchased my second set. I drive A LOT... I travel 30,000+ miles a year in my truck. I drive very aggressively, and snow is never an excuse for me. When we get snow, that means a 80 mile round trip to the ski resort. This tire will cover any circumstance above, and then some. This is by far the best truck tire that I have purchased to date. I was concerned about road noise when I decided that I wanted a meaty tire, But learned quickly that it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Snow and mud performance is second to none. The side wall tread really adds another level of traction for a pickup truck. I had my previous set on for 2 years and 3 months, with an estimated 50 to 60,000 miles on them. That's pretty good tread wear for an aggressive tire. I would recommend this to any 4 wheel drive enthusiast out there, you will not be disappointing. I will however recommend that you make sure to get you vehicle aligned yearly and rotate your tires frequently. I believe I could have pushed my last set another couple thousand miles if I would have paid closer attention to the tread wear.

This is my second set of WinterForce tires for a pickup truck.

My first set was installed on a 1999 Ford Ranger. They were fantastic, but as the seasons wore on I did have trouble balancing them.

We eventually had to use a Hunter Road Force to get a acceptable balance.

On the 2005 Chevy, these tires were as quiet as the all seasons I had on (Bridestone).

They balanced perfectly on a standard Coats 950 wheel balancer.

So say these are great tires in heavy snow is an understatement. Plus, I was shocked at how quiet they are. Firestone made some good strides since I purchased my first pair maybe 5 years ago.

Would I but them again? You bet. In heavy snow, they can't be beat.

I will see in the coming years how they hold up overall.
