If you drive in winter condition you need these tires! When the decision came between (my previous experience with) the Michelin X Ice and the Blizzak, I referred to Tire Racks review and Tires Rack salesman Dean. I cannot relate how much better these tires perform as a dedicated winter tire. The biggest difference was in traction while turning. Exceptional tire. I hope and expect to get 4 more years service from current set.

Purchased these tires to replace the OE Bridgestone Turanza EL 400-2 marginally worn tires, because of their poor wet handling performance in standing water at highway speeds. In my first 2500 miles with the Continental Pure Contacts, they performed flawlessly in heavy downpours at 70 MPH, and in dry conditions are smoother and quieter-riding than the OE Bridgestones, confirming what others had reported in spite of an agressive tread pattern. Fuel economy so far appears slightly better as well based on a 2500 mile road trip for which I kept detailed records. I was also considering the Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S Plus, but was concerned that the treadpattern didn't appear to have as significant lateral grooves to evacuate water as the Continentals. I find they are notably more responsive than the OE tires, and would recommend them to anyone who appreciates a quiet, smooth riding tire that also has a high performance capability. My performance reference is based on many years of driving BMWs with high performance tires, and while the Passat does not have the balance and suspension of a BMW, these tires make it a much better car.
I cannot comment on treadware or winter driving characteristics at this point. I have snow tires on dedicated rims, but the "shoulder" seasons give us early or late snow events that are a reality where we live, and I have interrupted a return home trip, stopping overnight at a hotel when an early Fall snowstorm of only 2" made continuing with the OE Turanzas, a hazardous undertaking. From other reviewers' comments respecting snow performance of the Continental Pure Contacts, I would likely have been able to safely continue in a moderate to light snowfall. Extremely pleased so far.

G 009's preceded these latest Bridgestones. So far, excellent in all aspects. Dry Handling, cornering and braking are excellent. Wet handling is phenomenal--We drove 6 hours in varying degrees of rain and never a question about control. In fact, the further we drove the more I realized how indiscernible wet and dry traction compared with each other. Slightly noisy when dry, but then again this is a very heavy car when measured against the footprint of the tire.



I'm looking forward to winter to test the snow performance. Considering the G 009's winter performance on this wagon with rear drive and traction control were near unstoppable, I'm expecting the G 019's should out do their predecessors.

I purchased these tires used from a friend who is a very reputable auto mechanic. I didn't know whether they would be very good to run in the winter as the tread was down to only about 25%. However after going through one of the worst winters here in Wisconsin. I was very surprised how well they performed. I would have preferred more tread but they pulled me through all the deep snow and ice covered roads with no problem at all. I am running into a bit of a problem when running in rutted roads during a rain storm. They want to hydroplane some but there almost down to the wear bars so I mostly attribute it to that. I would certainly highly recommend buying a set of these tires. I suspect I should be able to run them a while longer however am looking at buying a new set. The price for a new set really is fairly affordable compared to other tire brands. Before this set I ran a set of Uniroyal Laredo tires which didn't even make it past 35,000 before they needed to be replaced. With the Bf Goodrich tires I haven't run into any problems with irregular wear due to alignment issues which I struggled with on my last set. Overall I am pleased to say that by picking this tire you will make a good choice for your hard earned dollar. For a more aggressive tire you will be pleased with how quiet they are while running down the road.

This tire is great for winter traction. I ordered these with studs and couldn't be happier with their performance. Anchorage winters put us through warming periods when it will go from 15 degrees to over 40 and start to rain. These tires move through the water on ice road conditions with no problems while passing other cars with all season tires in the ditch or trying to gain traction at stop lights. Noisy ride to be expected with studded tires but safety for my family is more important to me than the noise. I just turn up the radio. You can't go wrong with these.

To be a little more precise, this review is for a 525i wagon but the vehicle dynamics are much the same as the sedan.
Negative reviews about this or any other "all season" tire should be taken with a grain of salt if they've been written about their performance in winter conditions. Why tire companies just don't call their so called "all season" tires THREE season tires instead, is beyond me. "All" seasons are CLEARLY inferior in winter to purpose built winter tires which have rubber compounds that don't harden in cold weather and treads that better deal with ice and snow conditions. The minute the weather/pavement goes to freezing, your tires' adhesion factor is severely compromised to the point of danger with summer or all season tires. So whenever reviewing an all season tire, I suggest going back to comments written in the summer, spring and fall for a perhaps more balanced outlook. In the meantime, these MXM4's are beyond all expectations for quiet, smooth and safe running in the wet and dry and look like they'll last a long time because at 10,000 kms, they don't appear to have worn AT All! Highly recommended. For better longer lasting wear for ANY tire you choose, I'd strongly suggest a wheel alignement IMMEDIATELY after purchase. I find the Tire Rack tests/comparisons very helpful for gaining a true, balanced and fair professional opinion. Hopefully you'll find a Tire Rack test for a tire you are considering. Sure, they sell tires and you might think that they'd have a vested interest in writing glowing reviews for every tire they sell but if you study their tests, you'll see that that is not the case.

I decided to buy winter tires just before the first forecast snow storm in my area. I live in upstate NY. The in-stock selection was low, the service manager suggested I try the Winter Maxx. I've never previously owned a set of Dunlop's, but with the only alternative available to me being the "house brand" I told the manager I'd take the Dunlops. I have not regretted that decision for a moment.

First off, the ride is very good for a snow tire with aggressive tread. Any decent snow tire is going to have some more noise and be bit rougher than all-seasons, but in the case of the Winter Maxx the drop-off in ride quality was very slight. If I was told I had to ride these all year I could handle it. Steering responsiveness takes the biggest hit, but is still within acceptable limits.

My usual commute to work takes me across two valleys before I get to the highway that takes me into town. That means I have to climb out of two valleys. Both of the hills I climb get brief sunlight so they are often snow covered for days following a storm. This is my first season without four wheel drive in many years. I was a little nervous that my VW Passat would not get me up the hills that I needed to climb in order to get to work. I'm happy to report that neither the Passat, nor the tires let me down. Not once during the winter did I fail to make the climb up the two hills, and for those who may not know, we had a very rough winter in upstate NY relative to recent years. Traction was very good and the car tracked extremely well. I would also mention that the second hill that I climb is particularly challenging as there is a sharp curve just prior to the steepest part which limits the approach speed. Braking performance was also very good as I have to go down the same hills in the evening that must climb in the morning.

Tread wear has been minimal so far. Tires were rotated twice during the winter and I'm fanatical about tire pressure. Worth every penny, would buy again.

This is a great tire, but not great for this car and my driving style. I sized this -1 (factory OEM is 17"), and in doing so created the majority of my "gripes" I have with this tire. The size I bought it in has been discontinued.

I have been using snows for the past 20 years, and I've tried Blizzaks, Generals, Firestones, Goodyears, Dunlops. I average around 7K a year driving in the winter on snows.

Good: The tire is an exceptional snow tire. Period. Snow to this tire is a traction additive. Deep snow, slush, light snow - not a problem. The tire hangs on very well when set on a singular course in the dry. Reasonably quiet. Stable under braking.

Bad: If you're a normal driver (commuter), *obey* the speed limit, etc. 95% of the bad won't apply to you. Because it is an exceptional snow tire, it leaves a lot to be desired in the dry. This tire is heavily siped so the tread-blocks are squishy. Full throttle acceleration isn't advised.

The web is full of comments of people complaining about the soft sidewalls, which I didn't heed. The sidewalls are *soft* and as a result I feel the tire compress over bumps before the car does. Somewhat unsettling if your car is stiffly sprung like the WRX is as you feel it "pogo" over transitions. Should you need to do a quick transition at highway speeds it is a sphincter clinching event. Just plan on hitting whatever you're trying to avoid if you're doing anything over 40 - the tires are easily overwhelmed.

Conclusion:

- A GREAT SNOW TIRE
- Very soft sidewalls - not intended for "sportier" or "firmly damped" cars.
- Surprisingly good tread wear - I wore off less than 2/32nds in 6711 miles of driving.
- These are not Blizzaks - on ice you're pretty much on your own unless you get studs. Given the price, I wasn't expecting them to match a Blizzak's performance.

Excellent tire. I have put them through the paces in all weather through a fall and winter in Minnesota. Having another Allroad in the house with sport and snow tires to compare these to, I have to say that these tires gave me no reason to switch to snow tires this year on my daily driver. They respond amazlingly in deep or light snow, are predictable and true on ice, and handle excellent in the dry and wet.
My only small objection is that they tend to feel slightly wobbly when cornering at higher speeds, for instance 40mph+ on a tight cloverleaf.
For all around performance, reliability, treadwear, etc. this is one of the best tires money can buy.
Combined with the AWD of the Allroad, this tire was truly unstoppable this winter!

I live at 7,000 feet in Colorado on a dirt road (and 100 yd gravel driveway.) We've just been through one of the most extreme winters in decades, with -27 temps and plenty of snow. My wife (a nature photographer) and I also drive extensively around the USA, often in bad weather and to... unusual :) destinations.

These tires have been incredibly wonderful, restoring the sense of rock-solid reliability on any road surface or weather conditions that I used to get in our old Subaru Impreza. I did notice a small MPG hit compared to the OEM tires, perhaps 2mpg, but that's a price I am willing to pay.

Now after 35k miles, I am sensing the tires will not come close to the 80k mile warranty. That would be sad, but I'm not willing to give up the performance for more mileage. I'd rather be able to drive safely and avoid sliding into a ditch or another vehicle :)

Installed on my 2007 F-150 FX2; very nice tire and best bang for the $ in an area like ours [British Columbia by the coast] where rain and snow or ice and dry weather are all unpredictable and can be encountered all during the same day of driving; even in June! Sometimes they will thump for the 1st km or so but are fine when they warm up.
I went over the Coquihala Pass in a January snow storm and passed several vehicles with snow tires that were stuck [not that the
Spec-X are a winter tire but I was happily surprised]. They tracked well [excellently!] through icy ruts even though the 275/55s are wider than most other vehicle tires on the road [so like they were a tad wider than the ruts]. 200 lbs of sand in the back of the empty truck box keeps them working in snow & icy conditions.
In the rain [and we get lots here]; they are superb; no kidding; you'd think you were on dry pavement; hit a big puddle at 120 km/hr and they haven't ever hydroplaned yet.
Cornering: I think the truck would roll over before they would lose traction; I had to learn that the Spec-Xs were better than my vehicle & its suspension and my driving capabilities.
Noise: they are on a truck not a Lincoln Town Car; what can one expect? Having said that: they do not differ with the original tires.
I have a reprogramming chip [and some other mods] and set the maximum vehicle speed to 120 m/hr; I am happily here to report the Spec-X's just cruise along and track well at high speeds; again tire performance & quality exceeds the vehicle's aerodynamics.
Would have liked to see 60K out of them but they have worked well and lasted twice as long as the original Pirelli's our F-150 came with.
I am looking for another set soon; will likely buy the 305/50R20s instead of the 275/55R20s I now have.
Compared to other tires; the Spec-X out rotates other tires in traction, wear and comfort in all settings and I'd agree with that rating.

Two winters in New England (MA) have sold me on the capacity of this tire to perform above and beyond. My RAV 4 is two wheel front drive and I travel to a game preserve to run my dogs every morning. It is an unplowed road. These tires have convinced me that I do not need an all wheel drive model unless I move to Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont. Yok's are the best tire for the money in any category in my view.

Bought a pair for the front my 93 Sunbird SE,everyday work car. These tires out performed any tire I have ever owned. I never rotated them,always been on the front of a FWD car. I have pushed these tires to the test with hard cornering and fast accelerations at times. I have a 3.1 V6 with a lot of torque, with stock tires on hard acceleration would easily spin, these tire barely squealed,and grabbed the road. Had great traction in wet weather and really no hydroplaning,unless hitting a large puddle at a high speed, but manageable. These tires ran smooth and had grate responsiveness. I live in New England and these tires are not for winter driving, they do okay in a few inches of snow but beyond that you need to run dedicated snow tires! Great tire based on performance and price! I have had Kumho tires on other vehicles I owned and have always performed well! Do your homework and read the reviews see what best fits your driving needs. Good luck and I hope this helps

Impressed with Winter Contact. Only had tires for several months but snow and ice storms hit very suddenly and early in Southern Minnesota this December. Prior to install noted very impressive heavy sidewall. Thick and beefy which is why tire may corner and handle so well. Extremely comfortable tire. After owing many Blizzacks and other snow tires on various cars I was tired of “floaty” feel and wanted good snow and ice traction without giving up sporty road feel when driving in dry or wet. Switched from Nokian WR G2 this time which had been quite good but was very curious to test highly rated ContiExtreme Winter Contact on wagon this time. This is also my first Conti in a long time. Tire is surprisingly smooth, quiet and outstanding in dry. Confidence inspiring in wet and demonstrates great overall handling. Conti has obviously worked hard to keep a performance feel built into this tire. We believe a winter tire should be reliable and inspiring over ice and snow, but also once the roads are clear, give you back your sporty, comfortable near silent ride. There are tradeoffs in this regard I understand -- yet Conti seems to have done well in expanding the envelope. First few snows dumped two feet in the past ten days with -10 below zero Fahrenheit temps and the tire has not skipped a beat. We drive with caution yet when safe and permissible wife and I drive very aggressively. Hard cornering over ice and snow is more than adequate for a modern snow tire. The only slight concern may be if under very hard acceleration from stop if heading up a very steep grade with heavy icy slush you may see some minor traction control system intervention. This was solved instantly by reducing throttle. Hoping Tirerack gets the tests going for snow--not just ice-- between the Conti, Bridgestone and Michelins. A lot more winter to come so we will report back on further tests and reviews from MN & WI. Will buy again for my BMW 5 Series next. Thanks again for good service TireRack!

Chicago had a brutal 2013/14 winter, so these tires hit the full gamut from light to deep snow, packed to fluffy and ice. Compared to the OEM Bridgestone tires, these blew them out of the water. They are a little louder, but not that much. Gas mileage stayed about the same. Compared to other tires for this vehicle, these didn't break the bank and have performed better than expected.
Beware, Firestone dealers will try to get you to do everything under the sun whether your vehicle needs it or not. Just get the tires. If you get the credit card, you have 6 months to pay it off in full. Really good deal.

I installed these tires when I bought the car used and have had nothing but positive results. In the winter, these tires perform well in the snow. My AWD Subaru has no issues maintaining traction in all conditions. Driving in the rain is not any different than dry pavement. The previous reviews regarding low traction in snow and rain don't match my experience.

I Just replaced a set of Pirelli's with these and am very happy. Quiet ride, sure footed and smooth. Have been in some rain and they performed well. Slight hydroplane, but not bad. I am a sales rep driving 35K a year, so I'm in the car a lot. Tires / wheels are important to me! These are my Summer set up to switch out from Blizzak's in the winter. If these give me decent wear, I will be very happy with them. I would recommend them.

Living in Germany where snow tires are required during the winter months. I am running Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S tires the rest of the year. I can compare them to each other. The Michelin tires are by far the best tires I have ever put on any of my cars for warm or wet driving. But when it is cold (40 degrees or lower) or icy, the Conti's are mind-blowing. I am 45 years old and grew up driving in snow and ice covered steep, curvy mountain roads. The Conti winter tires brake and handle astonishingly well on snow and ice. They are superior to the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S in very cold temps on both wet and dry. They have two weak spots. First, when pushed hard in sustained turns, they fall off suddenly and dramatically, which is forgivable for winter tires that perform so well as intended. Second, at high speed in a strait line the car is very unsettled. It just won't track straight. My my oldest son eventually gets queazy.
This comes on at about 60mph and gets worse all the way to 'can't go any faster" mph. The Autobahn is smooth as freshly Zambonied ice and yet the exhausting high frequency instability is ever present. (tried rotating tires, no effect)
Bottom line:
Astonishingly good winter traction in cold dry, cold wet, snow covered and ice covered roads. If you travel at high speeds for long periods of time, maybe look at another tire.

Purchased four of these tires for an old 1995 Subaru Impreza L AWD daily driver. My main concerns for new tires was superior snow/ice handling, acceptable/above average wet handling, and above average dry traction with a great tread-life while keeping prices low. After I did extensive research and comparison charts I purchased the Firestone Precision Touring tires right as winter was in full force.

*In the snow/ice, the tires handle extremely well. I was driving around plow trucks with ease and mated with the AWD, was truly unstoppable this winter. Once the snow hit a few inches, the tires still gripped and when they did give way to sliding, were extremely predictable, allowing me to counter-steer with ease.
*Wet handling is acceptable, though not the greatest, but is not a reason to dismiss the tire, as it is still very predictable in those hazards.
*Dry traction and responsiveness are perfect with the only downside to cornering stability, which I believe is the weakest point of the tires. It can feel as if the tire would give way or takes a second to find the road when cornering. Despite this harsh review; it is actually on par with other tires for dry cornering in this price range.
*As to tread-wear, I cannot speak as to the performance of the category since I have not had the tires long enough.
*The comfort level is great. The tires take harsh bumps without any real complaints; in fact, I believe that I could have potentially bent a rim in lieu of popping a tire, of course due to the enormous potholes that plagued PA and DE (the Northeast Snow Belt area) this winter.
*Price - $77.00 a tire, which didn't break the bank for an old car but was well worth it.

Overall, I was looking for some affordable tires that would give me the best points of all-season tires, with increased winter time performance. The Firestone's came through and I will definitely purchase again, pending the outcome of the tread-wear. I would highly recommend them.
