My Mini Van is modified for my needs and is Wheel Chair accessible. Making it so, requires many modifications that effects many aspects adversely as well as driving dynamics. Traction in wet, ice & snow is a top concern for my needs and these tires performed very well for me. I live in Fayetteville AR and it's very hilly and since it does not snow a lot, when it does so the town is not well equipped to dell with it. We did get our fair share this past winter and I was very pleased on how these tires performed in fresh and untouched snow of 5 or more inch snow. It is holding well on tread wear and preforms well in rain and such. Noise and comfort are not my main concern since these are well compromised due to all the modifications, but these do as well if not better than what were the factory tires, I have a little over 40000 on the van and about 10000 on these tires. Predictable braking and handling perfomance and I'm not pushing it anyway, and the price was very good(-:

I bought this tire to replace worn OEM-like Bridgestone's. I could not be happier about how this tire has performed: Quiet ride, premium look, improved steering response, and stable in wet or dry, and better than expected wear. If I don't upgrade the wheels and suspension this time around, then I will be replacing these Kumho's with a new set of Platinum LX's. Great tire!

98 BMW 528i w/factory sport package - 16" wheels, tire: 225/55/16
Previously had the earlier version of this BFG tire on my smaller 15" wheels and they proved all-round very good. The "Comp 2's" are being removed after 2,500 miles. These tires stick like glue and have a very stiff sidewall - from a performance standpoint they're excellent - however, there ride quality is quite harsh - considerably more so that will work for daily driving and frequent roadtrips. Noise is prevalant but as the rires a basically new it's not an issue...but I bet as they wear they'd get LOUD. Conclusion: good value for a true performance tire but think hard on this tire if your car has a sport/firm suspension as you'll definitely feel every pebble you come across, just too connected to the pavment for my liking.

I picked these up from Tirerack knowing I wanted an extreme summer tire. I had them delivered with a set of silver TRM C1M 15x7 30 offset wheels. Both the wheels and tires look fantastic. While I have had limited opportunities to experience the grip, I fully expect them to perform beautifully. A 20 minute track session in the rain was actually enjoyable as I felt supremely planted even with the wet conditions. And one autox in the dry with the tires barely scuffed went well with little drama. My '99 Miata is running on new Tein coil overs so it will be interesting to see how the tires perform this summer as the various track days that are coming up. But, I am very pleased with the tires except just one little thing....they do tend to sing a bit around 65-70 mph. So the comments regarding noise are spot on. Sad to hear they are being replaced with new versions from Dunlop, but I would buy them again in a heartbeat. Very satisfied!

Just finished 8th (yes, eighth) winter with this set running in Minneapolis/StPaul on a RWD 1999 Mercedes C280, my daily driver on a 10 mile round-trip 5-weekday commute. I bolt them on approx Dec 1 and pull them off approx April 15. Tread is half worn, if even that. Very heavy snowfall this past winter (toughest conditions I've seen in a decade). Tires performed perceptibly equal to first winter (2007,) which is to say excellent. Great value and service. Purchased as a tire/wheel set from Tire Rack in Jan 2007, as their recommended combo.

These tires are OEM, so I have nothing to compare to. So far the worst performance was in the light snow and ice we've had this winter, where I'm driving about 10-15 mph and the car going virtually straight ahead when I turn the wheel. Keep in mind this car has stability control, ABS and is FWD. I can't say I've been impressed with that. Nevertheless they've performed well in dry and wet conditions so far. I feel they've handled well given the cars handling ability. It would be easier to provide a better review if I had other tires on the car to compare to, so some of my ratings are guesses. If I can I will update this review after a while.

Best All-Terrain Tire Choices for 275/55R20 Size

Not too long ago, 20-inch tires were rare, exotic and mostly reserved for high-end European SUVs or show vehicles gracing the cover of automobile magazines. Those that were available were ultra high performance tires, often with little to no all-season traction and wore very quickly. This is not the case today. In fact, 20" tires are an option on many popular trucks, SUVs and domestic and import crossovers. 

Of the 20" sizes that are used, one of the most common is 275/55R20. This size is often used on SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Suburban, Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon. Two of the most popular Max Performance Summer tires being discussed on automotive forums lately are the Michelin Pilot Super Sport and Continental ExtremeContact DW. Both options are highly rated and outstanding tires. In our survey results, the Pilot Super Sport is currently ranked first, while the ExtremeContact DW is fourth.

How do the two tires compare? The Michelin Pilot Super Sport offers better handling, steering response and more desirable dry and wet grip. Continental's ExtremeContact DW provides a slightly softer ride than the Michelin Pilot Super Sport and a slower steering response as a result.

I've only had these tires for a week, but wow what a difference! I got this car with the OE Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 and was shocked by it's poor performance. With traction control on in the rain, it was normal to have the car hesitate as the rear tires fought for traction. With TC turned off, well, it was a wild ride indeed. Lots of fun but very dangerous for the inexperienced. Snap oversteer ruled the day. In the dry the Michelins were a little better but still very overwhelmed by the Northstar's torque. I've been itching to try a good set of Extreme Performance or Max Performance tires on this car since I got it but waited until the Michelins were used up. I can say that these DWs have transformed the car. It's rained several times in the past week so I've had several opportunities to try out the wet traction. Where normally with TC off (that's how I drive) I would get severe oversteer with normal throttle application (meaning no aggression whatsoever) on turns with very slick asphault, these Contis just bite like crazy. I have to get very aggressive to induce some slip, and when I let off, they come back into line beautifully.

On the highway, at speeds approaching 70 - 80 mph, there is a little vibration in the steering wheel, especially as the tire comes up to temp. They are noticably more noisy than the Michelins but that's to be expected. Ride comfort is good but the stiffer sidewalls are definitely felt. Not a bad thing in my opinion but conservative buyers should be aware. I read a recent review from a Jetta owner giving these tires a bad review stating that turn-in is poor and that he can feel the sidewalls squirming and the only thing I can think of is that his width is way off compared to his wheel width. There is no reason why the experience he describes would happen with properly matched tire widths.

I'll update later as I get more miles on these tires but so far so great!

How to Choose the Correct Track Tires

Are you heading to your first driving school or lapping day? Or are you already a track veteran who's looking to go even faster? Whenever you go to the track, having the right set of tires is essential to going fast, being safe and having fun.

What type of tires do you need to bring for a track event? Depends on the type of event, the expected conditions and the resources available to you.

Take a look at your available options:

Street Tires 

Some people run their cars on the track with the same tires they use on the street. If you're already driving high performance tires, that set may work for you on the track. This scenario works best when you're attending beginner driving schools, casual lapping days or other events where the focus is more on polishing your skills rather than setting fast lap times. Street tires are not recommended for track use, and driving them in a track environment will most likely void their warranty. Keep in mind that if you overdrive them into corners, you could easily render them useless after only one day at the track. An example of this type of tire is the Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

Pros of Running Street Tires:

  • Convenience
  • Price
  • Can drive to the track safely.
  • Most street tires perform well in the rain.

Cons of Running Street Tires:

  • Performance - These tires aren't as fast in dry conditions as track tires.
  • Longevity
  • Getting home - What happens if you lose a tire on the track? Do you have an option for getting home?

Extreme Performance Tires

These options are really a subset of street tires, but they're designed to take the abuse of occasional track days. They have more focus on dry traction and responsive handling. Extreme performance tires can be used on an enthusiast oriented daily driver, or mounted on separate wheels for track use. An example of this tire is the Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 R.

Pros of Extreme Performance Tires:

  • Grip - Better performance than regular street tires.
  • Durability
  • Value - Last longer at the track than normal street tires.
  • Convenience
  • Versatility

Cons of Extreme Performance Tires:

  • Competition - Drivers are at a disadvantage compared to drivers who use dedicated track tires.

Streetable Track Tires 

There are some tires that are essentially track tires, but can be driven to and from the track. They would wear out very quickly if driven daily on the street. These tires will generally have enough tread pattern to handle damp pavement, but will be very prone to hydroplaning. An example of this type of tire is the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo.

Pros of Streetable Track Tires:

  • Grip - These tires will outgrip extreme performance tires.
  • Convenient - If you can swap wheels at home, but your car won't carry a second set of wheels to the track, this can be the perfect solution.
  • Versatility - Some of these tires can work as an intermediate tire for damp or drying track conditions.

Cons of Streetable Track Tires:

  • Give up a little grip compared to the most specialized options.
  • Few miles of use as a street tire.
  • Hydroplaning can be an issue if caught in the rain.

Specialized Track Tires

Track tires provide the ultimate in grip. They discard most streetability characteristics in order to deliver the very best lap times. With lots of grip and shoulders that are generally more square, these tires can be more challenging to drive at their limits. They should be mounted on separate wheels and installed at the track. An example of this type of tire is the Hoosier A7.

Pros of Track Tires:

  • Performance - If you are racing to win, track tires are the way to go.
  • Easiest way to turn faster lap times.

Cons of Track Tires:

  • Track tires won't work in the rain. You need a separate set if rain is a possibility.
  • More challenging to drive at the limit.
  • Often requires suspension modification or a specialized set-up.

To be a little more precise, this review is for a 525i wagon but the vehicle dynamics are much the same as the sedan.
Negative reviews about this or any other "all season" tire should be taken with a grain of salt if they've been written about their performance in winter conditions. Why tire companies just don't call their so called "all season" tires THREE season tires instead, is beyond me. "All" seasons are CLEARLY inferior in winter to purpose built winter tires which have rubber compounds that don't harden in cold weather and treads that better deal with ice and snow conditions. The minute the weather/pavement goes to freezing, your tires' adhesion factor is severely compromised to the point of danger with summer or all season tires. So whenever reviewing an all season tire, I suggest going back to comments written in the summer, spring and fall for a perhaps more balanced outlook. In the meantime, these MXM4's are beyond all expectations for quiet, smooth and safe running in the wet and dry and look like they'll last a long time because at 10,000 kms, they don't appear to have worn AT All! Highly recommended. For better longer lasting wear for ANY tire you choose, I'd strongly suggest a wheel alignement IMMEDIATELY after purchase. I find the Tire Rack tests/comparisons very helpful for gaining a true, balanced and fair professional opinion. Hopefully you'll find a Tire Rack test for a tire you are considering. Sure, they sell tires and you might think that they'd have a vested interest in writing glowing reviews for every tire they sell but if you study their tests, you'll see that that is not the case.

I decided to buy winter tires just before the first forecast snow storm in my area. I live in upstate NY. The in-stock selection was low, the service manager suggested I try the Winter Maxx. I've never previously owned a set of Dunlop's, but with the only alternative available to me being the "house brand" I told the manager I'd take the Dunlops. I have not regretted that decision for a moment.

First off, the ride is very good for a snow tire with aggressive tread. Any decent snow tire is going to have some more noise and be bit rougher than all-seasons, but in the case of the Winter Maxx the drop-off in ride quality was very slight. If I was told I had to ride these all year I could handle it. Steering responsiveness takes the biggest hit, but is still within acceptable limits.

My usual commute to work takes me across two valleys before I get to the highway that takes me into town. That means I have to climb out of two valleys. Both of the hills I climb get brief sunlight so they are often snow covered for days following a storm. This is my first season without four wheel drive in many years. I was a little nervous that my VW Passat would not get me up the hills that I needed to climb in order to get to work. I'm happy to report that neither the Passat, nor the tires let me down. Not once during the winter did I fail to make the climb up the two hills, and for those who may not know, we had a very rough winter in upstate NY relative to recent years. Traction was very good and the car tracked extremely well. I would also mention that the second hill that I climb is particularly challenging as there is a sharp curve just prior to the steepest part which limits the approach speed. Braking performance was also very good as I have to go down the same hills in the evening that must climb in the morning.

Tread wear has been minimal so far. Tires were rotated twice during the winter and I'm fanatical about tire pressure. Worth every penny, would buy again.

I bought these to replace a set of mud terrains that had seen better days. I needed something that had a semi-aggressive tread pattern, mild noise, and good wear.
I looked at numerous all terrains and all things considered the Duratracs had everything I wanted.
Recently I got to really test the nature of this tire. I went to a well known off road park in Texas with a group of friends. I was able to put the tires through almost everything except sand that day:
Rocks-very good grip over large ledges and such. I experienced very little tire slip when climbing over rocks all day. I was able to keep pace with others who ran much more aggressive tires
Mud-I took a rare moment and decided to try out some mud. I got over the top of my tires in a water hole and the mud was flying everywhere. I kept on the throttle and I pulled through with little drama. Just judging by the amount of mud that was in the cab of my open top Wrangler, the Duratracs did just fine.
Dirt-of course on dirt they do their job. Zero complaints here.

Most of my driving is on the road, sadly. I have not had anything negative to say about the on road performance of these tires.I am not expecting to hit 50,000 miles with the monthly trips to off road parks that I make. I am willing to accept that because of how they do perform. I'm hoping by the time I need replacements that Goodyear might come out with an even more aggressive all terrain. Until then, happy wheeling.

Two winters in New England (MA) have sold me on the capacity of this tire to perform above and beyond. My RAV 4 is two wheel front drive and I travel to a game preserve to run my dogs every morning. It is an unplowed road. These tires have convinced me that I do not need an all wheel drive model unless I move to Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont. Yok's are the best tire for the money in any category in my view.

This is strictly a comfort tire, and does not strike a suitable balance between comfort and performance. The tires are extremely comfortable and quiet, providing a luxurious experience for passengers. For the driver, it is a different experience. If you are in touch with your car's performance, you will notice that they 'squish' or flex a lot during turns, numbing the response through the steering wheel. If you value steering feedback, this is not the tire for you.

These tires do fairly well in snow and rain, but still have a numb feeling that makes you second-guess when control matters most. I recommend Pirelli's P7 instead.

Purchased for all season wet use. Very easy break-in with multiple rebalances as tires settled in. Tires hold balancing quite well, however.
Biggest complaint is the poor ride quality- tried various tire pressures from 35PSI to 43PSI (OE spec is 36psi to 49PSI). Went with 35 series instead of 30's but can only surmise it helped any. Wanted the higher load index (100) to hopefully prevent flat spotting- no such luck. Takes a couple miles to "warm" up. The RE962's were even worse (different size).
The Audi is heavy and powerful (4260lbs; 515hp/500tq) and generally naws thru tires rather quickly, especially on the front. The 275 width on 9.5" wheels doesn't seem to have helped much, if at all, since the circumfrential grooves just get bigger, reducing the foot print. Had Michelin Pilot's (old) that bubbled, so got the B-stones. Immediately noticed the stearing vagueness, but hoped once the tires wore down a bit, steering response would return. No such luck. Alignment is perfect, done at a european race shop.
The dry limit seems a bit low to me, even when setting the car up long as possible to load the tires. Transient response is numb and a bit mushy (even at higher PSI), but are consisently predictable, at least it's safe.
These tires are rated 2nd on TR, but would say it's a d-i-s-t-a-n-t 2nd place. Overall, I should have anted up for the Michelins, or Conti's if I wanted to "save". Friend of mine has the same car with the new Michelin Pilot Sports-- loves them.
-----Even called B-stone, but there's no tread warranty and customer service was impersonal with people seemingly flipping pages to figure out the answer. I'm a serious car "guy" and expect and hope someone on the other end can hold a reasonable technical dialogue and know basic info off the cuff. Think I'd rather deal with the French for serious performance tires. The S-04's are a good choice for someone that has low-ish high performance aspirations. 3rd and last set of B-stones....

These replaced well worn Yokohama s.drives in the same size, mounted on Mazda CX7 OEM wheels 18x7.5". The s.drives had 35K hard heat soaked miles on them, were zigzag cupped on the insides (bad rear toe) and very thin inside compared to outside, perhaps from the MZ3's stock negative camber. Noise and dry grip are dramatically improved, as is the ride comfort, keeping in mind that any new tire replacing a worn and heat cycled tire will almost always be quieter, grippier and softer riding. The Las Vegas heat is brutal on tires, and it so seldom rains I cannot comment on and wet performance. I also can't comment on tread wear as of yet. So far and am very pleased I spent the extra $1 per tire over a new set of s.drives. This was all thanks to Tire Rack's excellent customer survey system. As I look back at all of the Yokohama tires I have purchased here at Tire Rack it seems all Yoko's get extremely noisy with age. Maybe a brand trait? I only thank the Good Lord that Tire Rack does not have a button to click on that tells you how much money you have spent total on tires in your life time!

Had almost no snow or ice this winter but lots of rain. As expected these tires handled the rain without issue. Superior wet weather performance.

After two mid-Atlantic winters these tires impress for their relative quiet, smoothness and overall competence on dry and wet roads. My mpg suffers only a little. I still have 12/32 tread on all 4 tires. Wear has been even, keeping the pressure at 38 to 40 psi.

Just (Mar 28, 2012) took them off for the summer. Put on a set of Continental ProContact with EcoPlus Technology on my OEM wheels.

I Just replaced a set of Pirelli's with these and am very happy. Quiet ride, sure footed and smooth. Have been in some rain and they performed well. Slight hydroplane, but not bad. I am a sales rep driving 35K a year, so I'm in the car a lot. Tires / wheels are important to me! These are my Summer set up to switch out from Blizzak's in the winter. If these give me decent wear, I will be very happy with them. I would recommend them.
