Initial Review, 6,000 Miles on Tires
April 01, 2013

Overall a pretty good tire. Car is mostly driven on weekends and when the weather is nice. Occasionally goes to autocross. Can't really comment on wet performance, as I very rarely drive the car in the rain, and can't really speak about noise level as I can't hear tires over my exhaust. Handling of this tire seems to be very crisp. Lateral stability is excellent. My big complaint is a lack of forward bite. I seemed to have more forward bite with my BFG G-Force Sports, which were 20mm narrower. Granted, no street tire is going to be perfect with 430+ lb-ft to the wheels.

Overall, would recommend this tire for a mostly street driven sports car. Will probably be looking somewhere else for my next set, likely just to a softer compound to get more grip under acceleration.

Put these on my 1997 F350 Crew cab long bed 7.3 Powerstroke and I am satisfied greatly with performance. From driving 12 miles to school, driving 400 miles to visit family, they perform well. Off the road isn't amazing but better than I expected. Even pulling 12,000 pound 5th wheel at 80 psi the tires do amazing job. Great tire probably buy again.

BFGoodrich Brings Back Classic Red Line Tire for New Camaro and Challenger

Thursday, March 28, 2013 by Doc Horvath

Do you own a new Camaro or Challenger with 18" wheels? We've just received our first batch of 245/55R18 BFGoodrich Radial T/A Spec tires with the famous red stripe! This size is standard on LS and most LT Chevrolet Camaros and will also work on the Dodge Challenger equipped with factory 18" wheels. The 1/4" wide stripe recalls the muscle car days of the late sixties when similar tires were a factory option. The tire is being used by Hurst on their limited Redline Edition Camaro.

With a 102T service description, the Radial T/A Spec is designed to provide a comfortable and quiet ride for cruising around town, while the 245/55R18 sidewall height provides plenty of cushion. While not a high performance tire intended for the track, it does provide plenty of wet and dry grip for the occasional enthusiastic drive. Take a look at what our customers are saying about their experience with the BFGoodrich Radial T/A Spec:

"This is the most comfortable tire I have run in an 18". It has a level of comfort and still lets you feel like you're in a sports car without cringing every time you hit a bump. The tire holds the car out of the hole and exceeded my expectations in the corners. You get a lot more than you pay for!" -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2012 Chevrolet Camaro LS

"These tires well exceeded my expectations. This is an excellent tire and I will definitely buy it again." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2011 Chevrolet Camaro LT

"This is a phenomenal tire. I can't believe they can make a tire this good for such a great price. Probably the best tire I have owned." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2011 Chevrolet Camaro LS

Our customer's feedback is a great tool to use when shopping as it'll help you with input from other drivers and their long term experience with each tire.

While we won't see the red line option in other sizes soon, availability of the 245/55R18 size is limited. If you have a new Camaro or Challenger with 18" wheels, consider the BFGoodrich Radial T/A Spec.

Trailer Tires Available at Tire Rack

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by Marshall Wisler

While the main focus for Tire Rack remains light duty passenger vehicles, we have expanded our trailer tire selection to further cater to the enthusiast with utility trailers, boat trailers and car trailers. For trailers using 14"-16" modern metric fitments, we offer the Goodyear Marathon Radial and Power King Towmax STR in many 6, 8, and 10 ply load ranges.

Goodyear Marathon Radial

Power King Towmax STR

Trailer Service tires feature heavy-duty constructions and accommodate higher inflation pressures to provide the load capacity necessary to match many trailer applications and payloads. Their stiffer sidewalls help control sway for enhanced towing stability and they offer more bruise resistance than typical passenger tires. These heavy-duty, special purpose trailer tires are not meant for use on cars or trucks. Tires in this performance category are not UTQG rated.

Goodyear's Marathon Radial is designed specifically for use on travel trailers, pop-up campers, boat trailers and fifth wheel trailers used for hauling everything from race horses to racecars. Developed to make towing a trailer more enjoyable, the tire is more economical while making it easier to take your big "toys" with you on the weekends.

Also developed specifically for use on travel trailers, pop-up campers, boat trailers and fifth wheel trailers, the Power King Towmax STR delivers dependable and long-lasting, on-highway service for towed trailers.

Initial Review, 50,000 Miles on Tires
March 16, 2013

Update to previous 4,000 mile review. A phenomenal tire, and I can see none rated better that I would buy. Exceptional in dry and wet conditions, even heavy rain. Good in light to deep snow, but fair in icy conditions. Have maybe 5-10,000 miles of tread left now that I've put on 50,000. Quiet, smooth, what we all would expect a good tire to be.

Interestingly, I work in construction. My previous Continental Cross Contacts which I loved, had a number of flats from picking up nails, etc. None with this tire, which is either coincidence, or signs of better tire composition, which I believe it is. Continental has none in this size, so I will buy this tire again.

This winter, I looked at the tread and had concerns about winter driving on worn tread. But, decided to stick it out and tires performed SURPRISINGLY well.

My Toyota V8 all wheel drive limited has the best of everything, and these tires meet my expectations. Mileage in summer averages 18.4, and less in winter due to gas reformulation.

Highly recommended for those who appreciate quality, safety and consistency. But, if you live where ice and snow abound all winter, you may want to consider winter tires, but these are more than able to take on CT winters. Best to you all.

Dunlop Sport Maxx Race: DOT-Legal Track Tire Expands Size Lineup

Monday, March 25, 2013 by Ben Rooney

The Dunlop Sport Maxx Race is a racing tire that is street legal. Unlike some other race tires that are DOT-legal but not intended for road use, the Sport Maxx Race is able to be driven to and from the track. This tire performs excellently on dry roads and was introduced as the stock tire for the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series. Dunlop has recently expanded their offerings for the widths ranging from 235mm to 325mm.

These tires are a class up from Extreme Performance Summer tires that offer a balance of street longevity and track performance. The Dunlops are more track focused and have less longevity on the street. While we haven't had the opportunity to test the Sport Maxx Race yet, we have received some very positive customer feedback. In a recent review, one owner writes:

"Though it is soft and wears quickly, it is actually quite comfortable and not very loud at all. I have two sets of wheels/tires; one for the street and another for track. Other than the price and how quickly they wear, I can't find a single fault with this tire. It is designed for the track, and is only DOT-certified so that you can drive your car to the track, instead of trailering it there. The Sport Maxx is the best tire of its kind, in my experience."

While it's definitely not a tire for everyone based on price and limited treadlife, it could be just the ticket for a dedicated enthusiast. View available sizes to see if the Dunlop Sport Maxx Race is an option for your vehicle.

Initial Review, 2,500 Miles on Tires
March 02, 2010

This is more a review of these tires on my specific car.

Great in the snow, absolutely great. The more snow the better, or so it seems. Braking is easily better than all-seasons, as is handling and acceleration. Wet snow is noticable more difficult to maintain control, however. Now for the bad news, seemingly terrible in the slush. Not sure if it is my car or the tires, but the car gets pushed around very easily by even small amounts of slush. I tend to believe it has more to do with my cars suspension, weight, and width to wheelbase ratio than the tires though. Easier to drive through 6 inches of snow than 1 inch of slush. Fun to have a car willing to rotate on dry roads, but not so much on wet winter slush.

Dry roads are mixed, as these things like to grab every little pebble and sand grain the road commission dumps on Michigan. Slip and control is well within tolerance though, and really only becomes an issue in spirited driving. It takes very little to spin the inside wheel accelerating through a tight corner if there is any sand, debris. Clean roads are great in the dry though. Some tire wandering above 65 mph, although determined mostly by road surface. Tires seem to move and stretch a noticable amount more above freezing temperatures, although this is only apparent driving back to back temperature differences.

Very quiet tire, almost as quiet as the non-OEM all-seasons that I had on before. (Coopers?) Much quieter than my father and bro-in-laws Blizzak Revo's. Stock wheels are 17", these are on 16", I notice more rebounding motion from the tires than stock, although small imperfections are slightly smoothed over versus stock. In retrospect, I should have gone with 17" as the extra sidewall can be felt in hard acceleration. Not sure on tread-wear yet.

In summary on my Mazda 6s, great on the snow, bad in slush, matches wet(rain) A/S performance, dependable dry weather performance and a very quiet ride for snow tires.

Do You Have the Three Tools Needed to Remove Your Wheels and Tires?

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 by Gary Stanley

There are many cases where it can be useful to remove your wheels and tires yourself.

Regardless of the reason, there are three essential tools that'll make removing your wheels from your vehicle a safe and easy process.

Tire Rack Aluminum Service Jack and Jack Stand Set
Tire Rack Aluminum Service Jack and Jack Stand Set

1. Lug wrench - Gorilla's Extendable Lug Wrench Set is perfect for the job. The handle smoothly extends and locks to give you the extra torque you need to break those lugs free and loosen them.

2. Floor jack - The wheel and tire need to be off of the ground before you have a chance of getting them off of the vehicle! A floor jack makes lifting the one corner of the vehicle as easy as pumping a lever. We offer a lightweight aluminum floor jack that will be a great addition to your garage.

3. Jack stands - Once you have the wheel up in the air, use a jack stand to secure the vehicle in its raised position. Using solid jack stands is an important safety measure to have in place in case your floor jack fails or is inadvertently knocked out of place. Purchase a sturdy set from your local hardware or auto parts store, or you can purchase them as a floor jack and stands combination (picture shown above).

You can save money and learn more about your vehicle by performing simple vehicle maintenance yourself.

Initial Review, 500 Miles on Tires
March 02, 2013

Convinced 87 year old mother to replace 7 year old original Continental tires with 1/2 remaining tread and 35k miles with new ones as they were getting a little hard. She was happy with the Continentals so I read all the tests on the new ProEco's and they finished first in the tests. Competitively priced with all the leading sellers with better performance. Know full well these will be the last tires she will ever need on this car. She was immediately impressed with the handling and quiet of the car and new tires. I took it out in 24F crappy weather with slush and rain to see how good they were going to be. Awesome!! They are much superior to the original design in wet, slushy and dry. Light snow and ice up and down driveways with traction control is a breeze. I've been driving this car in dry, wet and light snow for the last two weeks and can find no fault with them. Modern cars with ABS and traction control with 17" alloy wheels will love these tires. Handling in the extreme under bad weather is quite amazing for a Green tire with 80k tire wear. I have autocrossed cars for 30 years so pretty much know how to road test tires for grip and steering feel in both wet and dry. These tires have it all for the average motorist at a fair price. I totally concur with Tirerack's tests. Especially when the cruise control is on at 70mph on the highway the ride is great and they are totally quiet with an original factory suspension. These are great tires for NW Ohio where the snow rarely gets over 3" deep.

As spring turns the corner, you may find yourself looking to upgrade your vehicle's suspension. Racing Technology Available for the Street: StopTech Big Brake Kits

Thursday, March 14, 2013 by Ben Rooney

When street cars go to the racetrack, the brakes are often the weakest link. While a street car's brakes usually only need to deliver maximum braking force from high speed on emergency occasions, a car on a racetrack uses maximum braking repeatedly, often with very little time to cool down. Overheated brakes quickly lose stopping power, which can lead to slower lap times and/or frightening moments.

Tire Rack has been carrying StopTech pads and rotors, and now we are pleased to add their Big Brake Kits. Available in rotor diameters from 322mm-380mm (12.7"-15"), they're available for a wide variety of performance-oriented applications. To check brake products available for your car, shop by vehicle

Engineered to the highest standards, StopTech emphasizes rigidity in their calipers for reliable performance under demanding conditions. Their calipers feature a patented bolt-in bridge that enhances stiffness and allows easy access to the brake pads for efficient pad changes.

The multi-piston calipers use differential piston diameters to precisely manage clamping force across the pad face. This minimizes uneven brake pad wear, particularly taper wear, for consistent performance over the life of the brake pads. The StopTech kits are vehicle-specific designs that maintain optimum brake balance and are 100% compatible with ABS and stability control systems. Calipers can be ordered in red or black finishes.

Two-piece rotors feature an iron ring under the brake pads for optimum heat dissipation with an aluminum hat to save weight. The iron outer ring is replaceable, while the center hat is retained and bolted to the the new outer ring. Rotors are available in slotted or drilled styles.

When upgrading your brakes, it's important to make sure that your wheels will fit the new, larger rotor and caliper. You may need bigger wheels than stock to fit the bigger rotors and calipers. StopTech has templates available to check the fit for your wheels. These kits are built to order, so please allow 2-3 weeks lead time when making your purchase.

If you're thinking about ordering a big brake upgrade, you can look forward to shorter stopping distances, greater fade resistance, better modulation and a firmer brake pedal. In addition, the big brakes with red or black painted calipers will enhance the appearance of your vehicle. They look especially good behind large diameter wheels with open designs. Take a look at our complete line of StopTech products

Initial Review, 40,000 Miles on Tires
January 03, 2013

These tires came new with the vehicle from the factory. They were rotated according to Honda's schedule but one of them developed uneven wear at the center. The center has worn down to 3/32" for the bad tire, while the other 3 tires have 4/32" left.

Hydroplane performance could be better during a recent rain storm, but they only had 4/32" left so I cannot complain. Treadwear is unsatisfactory because Goodyear rates them for 60k, but at 40k they only have 3-4/32" left. Noisy as well since about 25k miles, so much that it sounded like wheel bearing failure and I took it to the dealership. Rode with a Honda tech and his diagnosis was tire noise, and I trusted his words because I had dealt with him a couple of times.

At this point, I am waiting for rebate deals and am probably going to give Michelin Latitude Tour a try next.

I purchased these tires to replace the Michelin Latitude tires on my 2011 Nissan Armada SL 4x4. The tire shop initially refused to put them on the car, saying that the speed and sidewall rating were less than the OEM. I confirmed through several web sites, my Nissan dealership, and Michelin that these tires are appropriate for my Armada.

So far, I love these tires. Even my wife, who doesn't know anything about cars, commented that it feels like she is in 4 wheel drive when using them. They performed great in a 5 inch snowfall earlier in the month. They are very quiet and ride very smooth. I have owned these tires before (on my Toyota Sequoia). While expensive at about $1200 for 4 tires, the quality and tread life are worth it.

Hankook's Newest Ultra High Performance All-Season Tire: Ventus S1 noble2

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 by Hunter Leffel

Hankook Ventus noble2Hankook has started to release their latest entry into the Ultra High Performance All-Season category, the Ventus S1 noble2. Developed for the drivers of sports cars, sporty coupes and performance sedans, the tire is being released in a myriad of sizes and wheel diameters. This includes sizes between 16" and 20" diameters and widths ranging from 205mm up to 275mm. At the time of this post, many of the 16", 17" and 18" sizes are available, while the 19" and 20" options are expected to arrive at a later time.

Ventus S1 noble2 tires feature an asymmetric tread design pattern. The inside of the pattern is optimized for wet traction and wet traction channels were developed with 3D computer simulations for hydroplaning resistance. Asymmetric patterns can cause some questions for some customers due to the shape of their water channels, however this pattern allows for full tire rotation. For additional information, read "Are my Asymmetric Tires Running Backwards?"

The Hankook's outer edge focuses on cornering and noise reduction, while larger tread blocks and a solid rib provide stability under load. 3D vibration analysis technology was used to produce an advanced mold profile that delivers uniform contact pressure across the footprint to promote even wear and secure braking performance.

We plan on testing this tire during the summer months, so be on the look for those results.

255/45R20 Tires on the Front of a Dodge Challenger SRT8

Thursday, March 7, 2013 by Zig Ziegler

The Dodge Challenger SRT8 is the epitome of the new age American muscle car. A massive HEMI V8 and performance-tuned suspension make the Challenger a top choice among auto buyers looking for vintage-inspired good looks. There are two versions when it comes to the tire packages offered on the Challenger SRT8. Typically, if you're in a region that sees winter weather, the Challenger comes with the 245/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires on all four corners. If you're in a warmer climate or opted for the performance tires, the Challenger SRT8 would have come with 245/45ZR20 front and 255/45ZR20 rear Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar Max Performance Summer tires.

 Goodyear Eagle RS-A
Goodyear Eagle RS-A
 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar

Since the Challenger SRT8 with Max Performance Summer tires are staggered larger in the rear than in the front, you lose the ability to rotate the tires front-to-back. Although the tires are staggered, the wheels are not and the same 20x9 wheel is used at all four corners.

I have had many Challenger SRT8 owners using the factory Dodge 20x9 wheels with Max Performance Summer tires switch to 255/45R20 in the front. Now that the 255/45R20 tire is used at all four corners, you can have the best of both worlds: wide performance tires and the ability to rotate tires from front-to-back to gain overall treadlife and more even tire wear.

Shop by tire size 255/45R20 to view the options available and reap the benefits of being able to rotate your tires.

Just installed these tires. Drove about 20 miles. These tires fixed the noise problem that I had. My car made this helicopter/rumbling noise when driving. The noise would increase in volume and frequency as I increased my speed. I thought it was the wheel bearings and changed all four of my wheel bearings and rebuilt my axle shafts. The noise persisted. So I had these tires installed and now the noise is gone. It's too soon to tell how they perform but these tires are quiet and comfortable. The tread pattern looks sturdy and effective.

Initial Review, 700 Miles on Tires
February 27, 2013

This tire came standard with the Toyota Camry Hybrid LE. These tires are rated low rolling resistance (LRR) and thus they might provide a better fuel efficiency. They perform well on dry or wet roads in the city. Cornering could be better; if your driving style is rather spirited, you will notice some sliding of the rear wheels when taking a turn too tightly. Where this tire disappoints is on wet and cold pavement. I drove up to Snoqualmie pass in Washington state last weekend and at 70 MPH going uphill on the wet freeway (outside temp 38 F) the tires lost traction and the car felt like it was slightly skidding. I had to slow down to 60 MPH. It wasn't really confidence inspiring. The tires handled well on slushy snow, although brisk acceleration caused the wheels to spin and the anti-skid light to come on. I have not had a chance to test these tires on ice or deep snow, yet. I always carry tire chains in the trunk just in case.

Overall, this tire is ok for driving in the city if you don't expect lots of snow. If you like to drive up to the mountain passes or you expect snow in your area, make sure that you have tire chains or install a set of winter tires in the winter. Also, this tire feels generally rather stiff, at least compared to the Pilot Exalto A/S that we had on the old car. I would not buy this tire myself and I wished that the Camry had come with a more reliable tire like the Primacy MXV4 (or even the Pilot Exalto A/S).

Four of these tires with studs makes a front-wheel drive car a brilliant performer on ice!

We live on a gentle hill that became slick as snot after freezing rain last week. It was so slick that it was perilous to walk down the sidewalk. But with their studs, these tires did great -- going down the hill our Mazda 3 never lost any traction. Even when I tried stepping hard on the brake, these studded tires did not slip even a little.

Besides ice, we've driven on a couple of inches of snow and with a set of four we had no problem in our front-wheel drive Mazda 3.

I bought these from TireRack, who also installed the studs and mounted them on rims. What we received from TireRack was ready to mount on the car, which we did at a cost of $25 at the local tire shop at the beginning of the snowy season. This was a good customer experience.
