I have owned two sets of these Pirelli's. The first was on a company Subaru Outback. I was so impressed I ordered a set for my 2014 JCW Coupe. I took delivery of my car just before Christmas 2013 so I had them put on immediately before picking up the car from the dealer. We get a lot of snow and a lot of snow types from 7-11 slushy to deep packed here in Colorado, not to mention ice.

The reason you get these is because you want some performance capabilities along with good snow traction. I drive through mountains, prairie and just took a trip to Vegas on dry warm road. I left them on because I could still hit snow in the UT and CO mountains. We have had a lot of snow this year up until about March so these tires have really had a good trial in lots of snow and in warm weather in Vegas and NM.

The snow traction is amazing. I have Michellin Xice on my company Malibu, Blizzaks on my Mini Clubman S and these Pirelli's on the JCW. I have driven all in sequence in several types of snow and ice. All are good tires but these Pirelli's are my favorite. They handle extremely well in the snow. I went in a snow covered parking lot doing donuts with and without traction control. It was really difficult to break traction. On the highway and on some icy areas they are fantastic. No snow tires make you impervious but I believe these are the best short of studded. The main reason I like them is because of the terrific dry and even warm weather traction. They are superb. I will not autocross in them but in a normal sedan or SUV I would consider running them all year. They do not seem to wear excessively and cold, warm, wet, snowy or icy they are terrific. There are no deficiencies. For a snow tire I would actually give them a 10 in dry but I think that is for summer tires. I think for price and all around performance in a climate like I have, -25 in winter and temps can change 50 degrees in one day and different altitudes...this is a fantastic tire. You won't go wrong with these.

Tire is a good match for mini cooper S handling and ride is very good much better than the original run flats. Tire seams to have very little wear at 3500 miles Tires handle the curves very well.

I have used three brands of snows, Pirelli, Blizzaks and these Michelins. I have these on a corporate Malibu. I drive a LOT of city and through the Colorado Rockies and across prairie. I need a tire that will handle in most every temperature and condition and give me good stopping and handling in the city. These tires get worked very hard, especially in the city with quick starts at lights. If you are a city driver you know you may have seconds to make a left and you will tailgate the lumbering Buick, SUV or Camry in front of you to get through.

I will say this is an outstanding tire. I watched the videos here on Tire Rack and I cannot disagree. I love the Pirelli's and this tire in particular. I really cannot tell them apart in my driving so it is subjective. However, the Michelin's are holding up well as I drive a lot in the winter. These tires stay on minimum six months a year.

I took the Malibu out with these in a real slushy snow and it was passable. Nothing does really well in the slush as you ride up on it. I took my other car with Blizzaks and no difference. However, these tires bite, ride and recover well. They are really superb on dry road and warm weather, too. This is what I really appreciate. A Malibu is not a performance car but I drive it pretty hard, chirp the wheels frequently and push the front wheel drive. The back and front stay well planted and predictable. In the worst snow and ice the tires give good grip and minimum sliding with quick recovery. That is all you can ask. If the wear is good I am actually playing with the idea of putting these or some Pirelli winters on my Mini Countryman all year. I kayak and have an idea these will be good in sand and small rock near the rivers. Since I am in Colorado you can actually hit snow 12 months of the year in the mountains.
This is a great all around tire that should meet most needs. You can try and pick minute differences in tires but you will not go wrong with these.

This is my first experience with Conti's that I can say was outstanding! I am a very spirited driver in Michigan, in the worst winter we have had in 50 years and these tires performed wonderfully! 20K and these tires are still going strong and still handle competently. The only negatives (but very nominal negative) is they do generate just a bit of road noise, the sacrifice was comfort for handling (they don't take bumps great)but they are absolutely outstanding in the turns, on wet pavement and in the snow. For you high end tech. guys......These tires road-force wonderfully! I have installed 2 sets and every tire road forced to less than 10 lbs and balanced with minimal weights. The last set I installed (205 50 16's) only required a total of 3 ounces of wheel weights for all 4 tires and the tire with the worst road force numbers had 9 lbs of road force. These are GREAT tires! Forget about the Continentals of yester-year!

Great tire that just works. I only use them 7-8 months/year (have separate winter tires). They are responsive, secure in the wet, perform well in dry and have great longevity. Enough tread left after 31K miles that the "S" is still visible. Should easily go 50K+. Will get a set for our other car (MINI) now.

I replaced the original Pirelli run-flat tires with these Michelin Pilot tires. Immediate impression is much less road noise, less jarring over road ruts and equally good handling and feel in corners and acceleration. These are NOT runflat tires, and I deliberately chose this to imporve the comfort of the ride of my lowered Cooper S.
I recommend these tires over the OEM pirelli run-flat tires. I carry a can of slime in case of a puncture, but have not had a puncture in several years so am not too worried about that, and I would probably call BCAA or AAA if it was a serious blowout.

Decided to replace my 50% used Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires with a set of these A/S 3's, along with new wheels. I upgraded from the OEM size 205/50/ZR 16 to a set of 205/45/ZR 17's on Sparco Tarmacs. Both the Continentals and the Michelins were W speed rated. While I understand upgrading to larger wheels with smaller aspect ratio tires improves handling, I only reduced the aspect ration by 5%. I say that because the difference between the Continental's and the Michelin's is night and day.

2 weeks prior I upgraded my suspension with the H&R Touring Cup Kit. While it was a significant upgrade over stock, I felt it was still missing something. There was still some roll in hard corners and the steering was a tad mushy. I simply couldn't believe the difference as soon as I bolted up the new wheels with the Michelin A/S 3's! The Conti's have a very soft sidewall that makes the suspension feel mushier than it needs to be. Turn in on the Michelins is simply outstanding. Crisp and precise. Prodigious grip in corners and very predictable at the limit. High speed stability is light years ahead of the Continentals, which were excellent in there own right. Ride quality is actually a tad better than the DWS's as well. I would recommend these to anyone looking for a truly no compromise all-season tire.

Excellent summer tire. I bought these tires to replace the runflats that come with the Mini. Excellent tires for summer driving. However, don't try them in the snow - you get virtually no traction.

A few examples include:

  • Current generation Toyota Highlanders use a 245/55R19 tire size, but we can guarantee the slightly wider 255/55R19 to work on your Original Equipment wheels.
  • The Dodge Journey uses a unique 225/55R19 tire size, and as an alternative, we can guarantee you can use 235/55R19 tires.  
  • The MINI Cooper Clubman comes with a 205/55R17 run-flat tire that can be tough to get. For a better selection in both run-flat and non-run-flat configurations, the 225/50R17 size is a great option.

Was convinced by Preston at the Tire Rack to try these tires. The last 2 winters in Central Indiana have had a lot of snow and I have never had an issue trying to get anywhere in my Mini. There are issues in deep snow, but this is due more to the ride height of the car than the traction of the tires. The Blizzak's have been superb in getting me around in the winter. I put them on the car in early November, and switch to my summer tires around spring break (mid March). I really like having the dedicated snow tires.47246

I bought my used 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible in January 2014 from a local car dealership here in southwest Ohio. It came with Firestone Firehawk GTA-2 195/55R16 tires that had about 75% of the tread wear remaining. There was light snow on the ground when I drove my new purchase home. With just a couple inches of snow/ice on my driveway, I literally got stuck with the front tires just spinning. I researched this Firestone tire on the internet and discovered that it was poorly rated for anything except dry roads even though it is suppose to be an all season tire. Some reviewers even classified the tire as dangerous in snow and on wet roads. Since my adult children would also be driving this car, I knew that I had to get these tires off the car immediately. After extensive research on www.tirerack.com, I decided on these Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 tires. They had a nice balance of performance and price. I had to order this tire in size 205/55R16 since it was not made in the recommended size 195/55R16. I was not thrilled with my limited choices of other tires in size 195/55R16. There was plenty of clearance for this Hankook tire on the vehicle and it only caused a 1.8% speedometer error (an actual 61 mph reads as 60 mph on the speedometer). I decided to write this review of this tire's performance on the Mini Cooper since one had not been posted. With this tire, there was an immediate and dramatic improvement in ice and snow traction. My Mini Cooper is now a fun little snow machine. Traction on dry roads is outstanding and wet road traction is now also excellent. Ride quality has improved by being significantly less harsh. I wanted the more compliant sidewall of this tire to improve the comfort of the Mini Cooper's stiff ride and was willing to sacrifice some handling characteristics to achieve that goal. I am not what anyone would classify as a spirited driver but to my surprise, I found the tire's handling also to be excellent.

I have had these tires twice, once on a Subaru and now I put them on a JCW Mini Coupe. The dealer ordered them from Tire Rack for me and put them on before I picked up my new car. It was December in Colorado.

I absolutely love these tires. I have used the Blizzaks and Michelins on other vehicles and this is my favorite. The primary thing I like is that the snow traction is terrific but what makes it exceptional is the dry traction. In this season I have used the tire on every type of snow and ice possible in Colorado. Outside of slush which no tire does well the tire is excellent. I will also tell you that if you drive a stiff suspension sports car you will like the ride with the non runflats. I believe that I could drive this tire competently in virtually all conditions short of track work.

With a front wheel drive and these tires you can drive with confidence. I went out to unplowed lots and put the tires to the limits, even turning off traction controls. I would purposely cut hard, throw up some rooster takls and try to slide and recover. It was easy.

I strongly and confidently recommend these tires to my fellow enthusiasts.

Original equipment tires. Started getting noisy after 5000 miles. Mostly long distance highway driving, with camping gear. NO, off-road driving. Even with rotating every 4000 miles, air pressure checked monthly and alignment twice a year, they started wearing on both inner and outside front tire edges faster than center tread and rotating just made all look the same. Three nail caused flats and the dealer would only USE some high-tech plug to repair them (Toyota instructions) Replaced original tires at 30500 miles with same brand RFT but dealer suggested I try the Turanza 400-02 RFT instead. Result are EVEN WORSE tire wear, with mini chunks in the tread at happening from 8000 to current at 15000 miles. (45,000 total) on mini-van. Received the Toyota recall regarding load rating door frame decal. Because we have an OE rear Cargo Container and AWD, they offered NEW more heavy duty tires that will meet the max load rating requirements. Dealer told me there are not any 235/55R-18 RFT Heavy Duty tires available. He offered to remove the Cargo Container so the load rating decal would confirm. NO WAY, or go to a smaller RFT with a better load rating. NO WAY . Do not want to resort to non RFT (no spare) due to our out of the way camping. He then suggested I get a can of that green goo and a small air compressor. That will screw up the TPM's and sometimes leave a hard green goo on the insides of the rim. Has anyone found solution to these crappy tires that are still Run Flat and the same size or a size that will still fit without any tire interference?

 

Need Tires for a Classic MINI?

I bought these for my wife's mini-van and I'm very happy. The overall traction is great but the snow traction is fantastic! In the northeast this year we have had SNOW, and I can say without a doubt that these are the best all season tires I've driven in the snow! Last year I had the stock tires on this van and I could not make it up my driveway even with the AWD! Now I just GO, stop, and turn without any drama! I'm a HPDE driving instructor and I will be recommending these to all my students who are looking for a great all season tire. I will say that the sidewall is very soft and the tires need a lot of air. Also because the sidewall is so soft the steering response does suffer a bit but the trade offs are worth it.

I have now driven the Grabbers through all the eliments. Compared with the OEM tires these are in a different league. There is no weak characteristic. I measured treadwear at 7500 miles and it was about 1/32. At that rate they should go well beyond 80k miles. With low initial cost I can't see any reason to spend the extra money for Michelin or Goodyear. The Grabbers are likley better than the available Goodyears and as good, possibly better, then Michelin. In the past I have always chosen the big brand name tires, I was very reluctant to look at General. Just did not figure it could play with the big boys. Now I am getting ready to buy the wife tires for her mini-van and General is high on my list. Price aside these are hard to beat, take price into consideration and they may be unbeatable.

Just drove blizzard conditions in Colorado over Loveland Pass and then Eisenhower Tunnel. Our MINI made it both ways without a slip when many other FWD cars and 4WD's were spinning and sliding and multiple chained Semi's got stuck .

Initial Review, 250 Miles on Tires

These replaced the original Continental run-flats after 24000 miles at which point the wear bars were showing. These tires completely changed the character of the car. It now rides much more smoothly, quieter and the speedometer is more accurate. These tires were original equipment on my last two cars (Passats w/4Motion) and I loved them on those, too. Excellent tires!!!

 

Proper Storage Techniques for Your Tires and Wheels

It's not uncommon these days to have two seasonal sets of wheels and tires. Some drivers even have a third and fourth set for track use. Most sets are used seasonally which means the unused sets need to be stored properly. Below are some tips for storing your off-season tires, as well as storage solutions. 

  • Keep the tires out of direct sunlight whenever possible. The sun's ultraviolet rays and radiant heat are detrimental to rubber.
  • Before storing, use a tire brush to clean each tire with soap and water to remove brake dust, dirt and grime. If the tires are still mounted on wheels, use a wheel brush to clean the wheels with an approved cleaner. Dry with a towel and let any remaining moisture thoroughly evaporate. Do not apply any tire dressing or shine as those chemicals pull oils out of the tire prematurely and age them.
  • Place each clean and dry tire in its own large, opaque, airtight plastic bag (such as lawn and garden bags) for storing. Avoid allowing any moisture to remain and remove as much air as practical (some drivers even use a vacuum cleaner to draw out as much as possible). Close the bag tightly and tape it shut. This places the tire in its own personal mini-atmosphere to help reduce oil evaporation.
  • If you choose not to store white letter/white stripe tires in plastic bags, it's important they be stored or stacked white-to-white and black-to-black to prevent staining the white rubber.
  • Place the tires in a cool, dry location. It is better to store tires in a dry basement or climate-controlled workshop than in a standard garage, storage shed, hot attic or outdoors.
  • Keep the tires away from sources of ozone. Electric motors that use contact brushes generate ozone. Keep your tires away from the furnace, sump pump, etc.
