It was only me smiling when I drove my Miata, but now with these tires, my Miata is also smiling. It is the MOST comfortable and quiet ride I have had in this car. I have not had this set of tires long enough to comment on wet, snow or treadware which I will update at a later date, but for comfort, handling and quietness, they are excellent.

I bought these tires because I need to drive my Miata in all four seasons. The wet traction/lack of hydroplaning and the traction in snow has been quite impressive. They are a little noisy, at least at first, and they do numb steering response some. If I ever get to where I don't need to drive my car in bad weather I will go to a more responsive tire.

Initial Review, 15,000 Miles on Tires
April 30, 2012

These tires were on my car and slightly used when I purchased it a year ago. About 12,000+ miles I've added. Dry traction is very good. My 95M Miata handles extremely well with these. Dry traction is very good. These tires loosen up quite a bit when wet. Actually just loose enough to make wet road driving alot of fun at about the speed limit on spirited scenic drives. If your up for that. They reject hydroplaning rather well. Was forced to drive all winter with these in nothern WV. They performed better than expected in the snow on a rear wheel drive vehicle, but you better be a good driver to avoid getting stuck. However, even my spouse could handle snow under 1 inch and plowed roads. We did burn up our rear tires in >3 mild months of winter, we contend with many hills to climb. And we did climb them in the snow with these tires all winter. I'd reconsider using these if being used on a true performance vehicle with muscle. My stock 95M Miata can spin them at will and powerslide with mildly spirited driving if just a little wet. Fun for me, but dangerous at higher speeds/horsepower. These are one of the very few all-season tires available for the stock 95M Miata BBS rims. 195/50 15. Upon an inspection today I did find an outward bulge the one of my sidwalls about 2" in diameter. QC may be an issue? Overall for the price, I'm quite pleased with the performance of these tires. Can't completely say how much of it is the car and how much is the tire. But these tires are giving me exactly what I expect from my Miata and I can afford to burn them up having a little having fun. Also, they look good enough. I'm buying 2 more rear tires. Zoom-Zoom

Note: these are directional tires

Dry Traction = very good+
Wet traction = ok, safe at moderate speeds, good highway, easily pushed to fun limit
Snow traction = just good enough
Hydroplaning rejection = very good
Braking = good

My 1990 Miata is set up with numerous chassis braces, aftermarket anti-sway bars, stock springs and ride height. These tires were very good in all catagories when new. After one year and about 4000 miles the tread became very hard making the car marginal at best in any wet/low traction situation, including roads coated with salt residue. I replaced them with a set of Dunlop Direzza Star Spec's for summer, and a set of Michelin X Ice2's on steel wheels for winter. Both are excellent tires and worth every penney spent.

This is my 3rd set of tires for my Miata and they were by far my favorite. They have the best combination of ride, handling, wear and steering feedback out of the 3 I've had. Prior to that was the OEM tires which only lasted 14k miles, had a rough ride and were loud. The second set I had were BF Goodrich G-Force Sport. They lasted 24k miles but rode a little rougher and didn't handle as well aas the RE760's. My RE760's are almost worn out after 20k miles. So they lasted longer than the OEM tires but not quite as long as the BFG's. However, they were the best combination of everything. Once again the steering feedback on these tires are incredible. I'm going to replace these with the exact same tires!

These have been great tires so far. They replaced my OE tires that were seven years old and the ride comfort has been fantastic. They're very responsive and quieter than I expected. They also sit fatter than expected. Same size as OE but easily a half inch wider - which is a big plus. Will have to see how long they last, but great start!

Tire Rack's Own Take on One Lap of America

Tuesday, May 8, 2012 by Tire Rack Motorsports

About two weeks ago, I (William Loring) had a conversation about the upcoming Tire Rack One Lap of America event with one of my co-workers, wholesale sales specialist, Joe Woodward. Joe has run in the event four times before in his Miata and I briefly asked if he was participating again this year. I let him know that if he needed a co-driver that I'd love the opportunity to participate in this great and grueling event. It just so happened that Joe was in need of a partner and the Street Survivalists team was formed. A few years back, Joe and I were on a four-day trip in Mexico to drive "Baja 100" buggies in an event sponsored by Yokohama Tires, so this wasn't our first time as driver and co-driver.

As a long-time employee of Tire Rack, I've helped run the One Lap Skidpad Challenge many times. While it was fun to help out, it was always a little frustrating to see the drivers head out on their journey and just have to wait for them to return a week later - tired, dirty, laughing and full of stories. It was always in the back of my mind that I'd like to take part in One Lap.

With me getting my chance to participate, our team quickly traveled the first 1,000 miles of the event. And while it went by quickly, there are still over 2,000 miles left to go. We've had some problems along the way that caused us to get to our hotel in Iowa at 2:30 in the morning. Joe's heavily modified 2001 Miata encountered some complications that caused us to avoid using anything in the car that might stress the electrical system. Which meant, no AC, no radio and our GPS is powered by an auxiliary battery. Our team also had a major mechanical issue that caused us to miss one of the track sessions and lose precious points to our competitors.

Even with the trouble, I'm having a great time. The people are fabulous and there are some great cars to watch out on the track: ranging from a Honda CRX HF (which is currently in 11th place overall) to Nissan GTRs, a Ferrari and the meanest looking Honda Odyssey that you've ever seen. There's a camaraderie that is hard to beat. We even had drivers in our own class rush out to meet us along the highway in Oklahoma this morning, bringing us essential parts to fix our broken alternator. These are guys who would stand to gain from our breakdown, but they offered their help instantly, without hesitation!

This event is truly special and I'm grateful to Joe and Tire Rack for giving me the opportunity to take part in it. My back hurts and I'm sleepy, but I'm looking forward to the next 2,000+ miles and the adventure that awaits.

Kosei K1 Racing Wheels for Mazda Miata

Friday, April 20, 2012 by Gary Stanley

Since the warm weather has come upon most of the country earlier than normal this year, I've recently been receiving many inquiries for new performance tires and alloy wheels. While much of your wheel choice comes down to your own cosmetic taste and price, wheel weight and quality are also important factors to consider.

Lighter wheels can make a noticeable difference in the handling of low torque, lightweight vehicles, like my 1994 MAZDA Miata. Looking for a light, high quality and attractive performance alloy wheel for my vehicle, I took a look at the options available from Kosei. While many of their styles look great, I chose the K1 Racing. Below is a photo of my vehicle with the wheels.

Many racers, autocrossers and drivers in the SCCA STR use this wheel due to its great combination of durability, weight and affordable pricing.

When it came time to choose the right tire, I went with the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 due to its impressive ratings in our Tire Survey Results. I'm going on my seventh year with these wheels, and the silver paint with clearcoat finish still looks like new. I haven't had any issues with bent wheels and to me, the style still looks fresh.

The warm weather is here, so enhance your vehicle's look with a Tire & Wheel Package today!

These tires grip very well a lot better than the Dunlop A2s I had on the Miata before, however the lack of sidewall support makes the steering feel mushy in the 185/60-14 size. I miss Dunlops, the way you could feel the road and suspension while on the edge going around my favorite corners. The Sumitmos added 5-10MPH around the corners at the expense of feel and confidence.

At home on both the bumpy streets of SF and the demanding curves of Laguna Seca.

I purchased these tires to replace the General Exclaims that the previous owner had on the vehicle. Talk about a night and day difference - the Pilot Super Sports have been truly amazing in every way imaginable. While cruising around the city I feel at ease because they don't force me into a line or react too harshly when the roads are rough. At the track (so far I've only taken these to Laguna Seca) they exceeded all expectations for a street tire. When these things are hot, they stick to the road like glue. I purchased them hoping that would be the case and was certainly not disappointed.

All things considered (Price, performance, treadwear, and comfort), I can't think of a better option right now for someone looking for a very performance oriented daily driven tire.

Other tires I looked at:
Continental ExtremeContact DW - cheaper but definitely less ultimate performance
Direzza Star Specs - Less streetable, worse tread life, and slightly less ultimate performance (see raw figures from the tirerack tests)
Bridgestone RE-11s - more expensive, worse tread life

Possibly the best combination of ultimate dry and wet traction in a single compound. Grip right from the start, gets better as they warm up. Useless in mud, wet grass, busy on gravel, and jaw-dropping on pavement.

A summer-only tire that won't work at all below about 40F. Fronts wore considerably but the rears held out well; obviously just as you would expect in a slightly underpowered cornering monster like a Miata. A little stiff and rough riding, but the car always runs top-down and there is a lot of mechanical noise anyway. Great steering feel and feedback.

Probably the closest thing to a true track tire that also works as a safe daily driver you will be able to buy. This is not a tire for comfort, this is a tire for pushing it to the edge. Almost zero squeal or chirping no matter what you're doing. Wears better than I expected but don't read that to mean it's a long-mileage tire; it's going to leave rubber on the road if you drive them they way they practically dare you to do.

Don't buy this tire if you want comfort, a quiet ride, or extended wear. That's not what they are all about. Might not be the best choice for a daily driver, but I own more than one vehicle so this tire is perfect for one of them. Great value even at the relatively quick wear rate. Light ... my size (+1) is 18 pounds a tire; total unsprung weight on each corner is 31 lbs wheel, tire and lug nuts.

Look good on the car, if that matters. Recommended if you know why you need them; get something else if you don't drive them hard. I'd love to give it 9's all around but have to be honest about comfort and treadwear, so my overall really doesn't represent how much I like the tire. I wish they all gripped like this.

Michelin Pilot Super Sport Sets the Bar This Summer

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 by Marshall Wisler

In the second quarter of last year, Michelin updated their product line to increase competitiveness in the Max Performance Summer tire replacement market. Replacing the popular Pilot Sport PS2, the Pilot Super Sport provides an increase in ultimate dry grip while maintaining superior performance in wet weather.

Although this tire may not turn lap times as fast as tires from our Extreme Performance Summer category, this tire does an excellent job of blending superb performance with daily livability. What's more, Michelin has such confidence in this tire's wear qualities that they're offering it with a 30,000-mile treadlife warranty. Owners of vehicles with staggered set-ups that do not allow for rotation will also be pleased with the 15,000-mile treadlife warranty.

For years the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 has been used on some of the world's most high-performance vehicles. The Pilot Super Sport continues that tradition with its first Original Equipment application being the Ferrari 458 Italia.

The Michelin Pilot Super Sport starts this season holding the number one spot in our Tire Survey Results. In addition to our unbiased, unedited survey results, this tire has also taken top honors in "Clash of the Titans: Testing Two New Max Performance Summer Heavy Hitters." Purchasers of this prestigious tire can expect razor sharp turn-in response, high levels of ultimate dry grip and inspiring wet performance.

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experiences with the Michelin Pilot Super Sport:

"Wow! What a change in all aspects of driving." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 MAZDA MX-5 Miata Grand Touring

"I replaced the Original Equipment tires on my Infiniti M35 Sport. It was like day and night difference. My car drove and handled better than it did when it was new! I wish I had replaced them sooner!" -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2009 Infiniti M35 Sport

"Having owned many BMWs which I have driven daily, as well as an occasional track event, and having used many different tires on my cars, I can confidently say that no tire I have ever driven measures up to the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. These tires are simply phenomenal. The sense of confidence and connectedness that they give is unparalleled. They have superior turn-in, dry traction and wet traction. They are quiet and well-mannered on the road. They wear evenly, and as with other Michelins I have owned, I expect to get excellent overall life out of these. You can pay less for tires...or more. But you simply will not find a better summer high-performance tire." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 BMW 330Ci Coupe Performance Package

Spring has Sprung, Let's Go Have Some Fun with Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec Tires!

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 by Doc Horvath

With most of the country experiencing warmer-than-average temperatures, many driving enthusiasts, including myself, have shed their winter / snow tires and wheels for "stickier" summer tire options. For the last few years, the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec has consistently been a staff favorite in our tests, as well as a best seller for those looking for a great balance of exceptional dry and wet traction.

Soon after the tire was introduced, we performed our internal tests, and more recently I had an opportunity to test the Z1 Star Spec at BMW's training and testing facility in South Carolina. All those who participated were very impressed.

In our wet skidpad and slalom testing, the Direzza Z1 was poised and very predictable right to the limit of the car which mirrored our customer's feedback and survey results. The tire also proved to be relatively quiet and expected life span is consistent with the competition.

Are you looking for Miata tires or something for your Honda Civic? Or maybe you're interested in M3 tires or a set of tires for your Porsche 911. Dunlop knows their customer base and that's why the Z1 Star Spec is offered in a wide range of sizes from 14" up to 18". This allows drivers with both smaller and larger applications to enjoy the race-like traction of the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.

My ratings for these tires come with a caveat. I have not tested them driving at normal speed in the rain as I must confess that I do not trust them or my car in the rain (I don't normally drive it in the rain). As for ride comfort, I prefer a very firm ride (harsh if you will), and these tires are a little too soft-riding for me. Steering inputs when dry is great and seems to get progressively more responsive when steering wheel turns increase. Very high breakaway speed with no squealing. Noise? For most people they would be somewhat noisy; for me, noise on a Miata is part of the experience. Overall I would consider these tires again unless I am able to find a stiffer tire for about the same price.

First, this is a modified 850 GLT; chipped, cold air induction w/K&N filter, IPD blue springs, sway bars, yellow Konis, and right now sporting the "autotragic." As you might correctly surmise, I am a somewhat feisty driver. These tires are 225/40-17's on the Sport 5-spoke F7 7.5x17 wheels. I haven't had a tire off to weigh the wheels, but I would be very surprised if they only weigh 20.8 lbs, but they seem to be stiff and are attractive without being gaudy. These are without any reservation THE BEST tires I've ever owned. I don't know how long they'll last, and the 9's I gave them for noise and ride, well, heck, they're a performance tire and my car is MUCH stiffer than stock. Fair is fair. I'm 56 and have driven at least 750k miles in my life and have never had a better tire. I'm in Seattle; wet performance was a serious consideration..these are nothing short of magnificent in the wet, and, even though they're not designed for snow, they're okay. In fact, their performance at around freezing doesn't seem to be significantly diminished. In contrast, the General UHP is definitely affected by lower temperatures. Of course, the UHP is about 1/3 the price! I have the UHP's on my Miata and like them pretty well-much better than the stock Bridgestones. And the Michelins are stunning on dry pavement. I definitely WILL buy these again, and I highly recommend them. In fact, a good friend just put a set on his 2007 Audi A4-chipped, with coilovers, and loves them. I believe he bought 245/35/19's for 19x8.5" rims. One caution-the 225/40/17's DO require a lip roll on the 850 as well as some trimming of the fender liner-the 215's probably would fit without mods.

Changed out Proxes 4's for the new Kumho 4X's. I needed a real multi-tasker, and I got it. It's now my all season street tire. Works wonderfully for me in dry, wet, light snow( up to 5 inches ). It's stable, comfortable and responsive at any speed. I use mine for street and winter autocross in all weather conditions in coastal British Columbia. My car has upgraded suspension, but
I'm sure the tire would perform as well with a stock suspension. It's the best performance all season I've driven. Highly recommended.
