All-Season Tires for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

Friday, March 7, 2014 by Cy Chowattukunnel

With sophisticated all-wheel drive, traction control and weighing 5,622 pounds, you'd expect the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG to dominate in the snow. Surprisingly, this isn't the case because there are no all-season or winter tire choices made in the vehicle's 275/50R20 Original Equipment size.

Do you own one of these amazing SUVs, but a few inches of snow have you sliding? It's time to get creative with your next tire purchase. 285/50R20 is about 1/2" wider, 3/10" larger in overall diameter, and meets the G63's Load Carrying capacity requirements and fits on the Original Equipment AMG rims. Going with the 285/50R20 size provides you with many dedicated winter / snow and all-season tire options. Snowbelt drivers who want their G63 to excel in the snow should install a set of snow tires.

Even those who reside in a warmer climate, such as Atlanta, should consider all-season tires for their Mercedes-Benz. For a great combination of wet grip, decent light snow traction and good overall handling, the Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology is hard to beat. Another great option to consider is the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza Plus.

Initial Review, 3,200 Miles on Tires
January 29, 2014

Posting as a follow-up to an earlier review. I've owned these tires since May, 2013. Unfortunately, after the 2nd rebalancing attempt by Costco, I was past the 30-day warranty exchange period. Spent $160 at the top balancing shop in early July, trying to get the vibration issues sorted out. Had them check the suspension for wear or damage - none found. They 'matched' the tires to the rims (high to low) and checked rims for true - everything was perfect. At or above 50mph, I still have vibration in these tires. Called Bridgestone - that was a waste of time - 'you are out of your 30-day guarantee period' but if you have less than 2/32nds of wear on the tires, we will replace two of them for ride disturbance. All four tires have been rotated around each time they have been rebalanced - the problem exists with all four tires. Very disappointed in what is supposed to be a 'premium' tire. The problems started the day they were put on the car - shame on me for not making Costco replace them after the 2nd balancing - but shame on Bridgestone for making such a poor quality product. If I weren't throwing $900 out the window (after buying the tires, mounting/balancing, road hazard, and the body shop expense), I'd replace them today. I also noticed a 2 to 3 mpg drop in fuel mileage over the OEM Michelins that came on the car (and lasted to almost 60,000 miles). Never again - it'll be Michelins or Yokohamas from this point forward on any of our vehicles.

I have had these on 20 inch rims for 5000 miles..and am very impressed. They grip very well..very secure in turns etc, great over small and large bumps. I also had them through the New England winter this crazy year, and just for fun after 1 foot snowfalls i would go out driving. Not sure what the guy above is talking about, but i ran these though unplowed roads, up hills etc. and through 1 foot plus of snow. The thing will go through anything. The Mercedes 4matic is pretty advanced, yes, but the tire certainly did its job as well from my perspective. Was not sure what to expect with this tire, but am happy with it an i am very discerning when it comes to my tires. I've also driven them at 120 mph on open road..smooth as can be.

Initial Review, 20 Miles on Tires
April 10, 2012

Just got these yesterday (with Rial Como rims), and installed them. This morning it was raining on the way to work. The tires work great! A little more noise than my previous Goodyear Assurance Comfortreds, but these are also 225/45R17, compared to my old 205/55R16, so I can definitely live with the slightly additional noise. Biggest difference is in the handling and road feel, much better now. Before it seemed "soft", now it's more responsive and corners better too. Highly recommended! The Tire Rack delivered a great package and fast delivery, everything took maybe 30 minutes to install by myself with just a jack and lug wrench. Very satisfied!

This is a very high quality tire. The compound used in making the tire is very good as to it has great dry traction as well as wet/snow. many snow tires have terrible dry traction. Also, it does very well in light snow and wet situations. However, it is not meant for deep snow driving, as to the tread style is not meant for this. This is a perfect tire for those living in larger cities with alot of snow (and snow removal abilities). It is not good for countryside, as to the snow removal might be limited. Tires also have rim protection which keeps your rim safe in case you scrap a curb while parking. Tires are also very quite (same as my all-season tires) and create no extra fuel consumption. Overall the price premium is worth it as to not only does this tire perform well, it also looks good.

Enkei Racing PF01 Wheels. Thanks to MAT!

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 by Gavin Carpenter
Last April, I discussed putting new wheels on my vehicle. After making my decision and driving the new setup for some time, I'm quite pleased with my selection.

I went with the Enkei Racing PF01 for several reasons. First, is the brand's reputation. Several F1 teams, including the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team use them. For many SCCA and NASA members, as well as road-going folks, Enkei is synonymous with a low-cost, quality wheel.

Second, is the strength of the wheel. Many of Enkei's wheels, including the PF01 and the RPF1 are gravity cast wheels and use Most Advanced Technology (MAT) in forming the rim of the wheel. I didn't come up with the name MAT, but "shaving the wheel weight while adding strength to the rim" turned out to be a messy acronym. Here in the Midwest, I encounter a variety of driving surfaces and have hit my fair share of potholes and they've proven to stay true, so far. Thanks MAT!

Finally, is the wheel's weight. There is a noticeable difference in weight from the factory 17" Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 on my stock 17" VW Denver wheels and that of the 18" Enkeis with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The 18" PF01 comes in at about a pound for every inch of diameter and the tires at 22 lbs. each, or roughly 40 lbs. per corner. My stock wheels weighed approximately 50 lbs. with tires. This gives me a huge loss in unsprung weight, giving me an advantage in handling and braking. The ride quality of the 18" setup is rougher than the stock 17", but then again, I put them on my GTI and not a Golf.

Developed for many fitments including certain Honda, Mazda and BMW models, the PF01 is available in the following finishes:

I also toyed with the idea of purchasing a nice set of BBS rims, the CH in particular, but the cost dissuaded me a little bit from going that route. So, what do you think about the Enkei rims? Please note this is a photo from our Upgrade Garage, as my car was in desperate need of a wash at the release of this post.

Mercedes Benz Tires

Monday, December 14, 2009 by Tire Rack Team
Some vehicles use a staggered fitment (differently sized tires in the front and in the rear). Automotive manufacturers incorporate this design from the beginning to maximize performance. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is one such vehicle, and it features the following tire sizes: 275/30ZR-20 (rear) and 245/35ZR-20 (front). We installed the Continental ContiSportContact 2, excellent Mercedes Benz tires, to further enhance the performance that Mercedes-Benz built into this vehicle. Search our inventory of Mercedes tires by vehicle and we'll help you verify if your vehicle has a staggered fitment, and then we'll help you determine what tires will work best for you.

And if you'd like, we can even help you with Mercedes wheels. This SL550 features 20" O.Z. Ultraleggera HLT wheels, but there are many more options. Enter our Upgrade Garage to see what is available for your vehicle. (Literally—the Upgrade Garage allows you to "try on" different Mercedes rims so that you know exactly how they'd make your vehicle look.)
