What are Extreme Performance Summer Tires?

Thursday, June 2, 2011 by Gary Stanley
For many years, our top performance category for summer tires was the Max Performance Summer group. Tires in this range represented the absolute best of the best in regards to grip and handling for performance tires but still retained respectable wear and ride quality.

Not too long ago, a few tire manufacturers began to launch tires that pushed the envelope even further with tires like the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 and the Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08. Tire Rack felt that the performance level on these tires required the creation of a separate category that we named: Extreme Performance Summer.

What can you expect from tires that fall into our Extreme Performance Summer category?

Benefits :
  • Razor sharp steering response
  • Lots of steering wheel feedback
  • Outstanding dry grip
  • Superior cornering grip
Compromises:
  • Relatively stiff ride
  • Short tread wear
  • More tread noise
In short, these tires are for the driver who wants the absolute best grip and handling levels available in today's street tires, but is willing to give up some tread life and ride softness. Tires like this are often found on the Subaru STI, Mitsubishi EVO and BMW M3. They are also very popular to use in autocross for divisions that do not allow full DOT race tires.
