Sound Tire Advice: Kumho Ecsta 4X is a Great Tire

Monday, July 16, 2012 by Gary Stanley

I received the following email from a customer this morning: "Gary, I'm looking for tire recommendations for my 2009 Audi A4 Premium Plus, 245/45R17. My priorities for the tire are as follows:

  • Noise
  • Ride
  • Steering
  • Price

Car has original Goodyears with 25,500 miles. Experience vibration at 75mph after 15 minutes at speed. I still have the original control arms. What do you recommend?

Thanks.

P.S. I have bought many tires from Tire Rack since the mid-1980s."

For this customer, I recommended the Kumho Ecsta 4X. Why? The customer's primary concerns were that the tire be smooth and quiet, but still have good steering response and come at a reasonable price. This tire fits his needs perfectly. Don't just take my word for it. Our customer surveys currently have the tire ranked third out of twenty six tires in the Ultra High Performance All-Season category. And, last summer we tested the tire against three of its competitors and it finished in first place and was praised for its nimble steering response and great handling.

The Kumho Ecsta 4X is a great choice for many applications from small sporty cars like the Ford Focus and MINI Cooper S, to mid-size cars such as the BMW 3 Series.

I have Hankook Ventus V2 Cncept 225 50 R70 and they ride great (handling, noise, ride) but are very sensitive to road crown and pull easily. Nexen cp641 have been recommended and I would appreciate an opinion as to how they would compare in all those categories.

Dennis,

I'm sorry, we do not carry either model of tire that you've referred to so we are not familiar with how they would feel or perform, sorry.

Looking for replacement 4 season tires for E350 4 matic, 2006--as distinct from "all season" these tires have the snow flake icon on them

I know of no all season tires for this vehicle that have the snowflake icon short of a dedicated winter/snow tire. One of the best all-season tires for snow traction would be the Continental Extreme Contact DWS.
