Not long ago, Michelin introduced the Pilot Sport A/S 3 Ultra High Performance All-Season tire as a direct replacement for the popular Pilot Sport A/S Plus. We wrote about the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus in our post, "Which Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires Should I Buy?"
Like its predecessor, the Pilot Sport A/S 3 had a noticeable advantage in handling and steering response over other top Ultra High Performance All-Season tires. The A/S 3 was such a large step up in handling and grip that it even had better dry and wet traction than many top summer-only performance tires! Its only short coming turned out to be its snow traction performance, which lagged behind a few of its competitors in our customer survey data and hands-on experience. While not a great choice for drivers facing frequent snow, it was a great choice for those drivers who wanted performance that rivaled that of most summer tires, but needed to tackle occasional light snow driving.
Seemingly never content to rest, Michelin made some rather impressive changes to the tire in order to increase its appeal to drivers who needed more snow traction with the introduction of the Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Without any sacrifice to the already category-leading handling, wet traction and dry traction, Michelin has managed to increase the snow traction of the this new model by 28% over the Pilot A/S 3.
How is this possible without changing the tire's tread pattern? By incorporating a cutting-edge new tread compound which includes Michelin's Helio+ technology and Extreme Silica+ along with their Variable Contact Patch 3.0 technology. Michelin was able to dramatically increase snow traction while keeping the same tread pattern.
At the end of February, a few members of our team were invited to Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club by Michelin to experience the new Pilot Sport A/S3+. The series of demonstrations against leading competitors included a dry/wet autocross and one of the most extreme dry braking exercises I've ever experienced in my nearly two decades of testing tires here at Tire Rack.
While this was officially a "demo" rather than a "test" (stay tuned to the test results page for a future full test), we was very impressed by the Pilot Sport A/S 3+. It has clearly maintained its advantages over its top competitors from Continental and Pirelli. With its large increase in snow traction as well, the new Pilot Sport A/S 3+ will be an outstanding tire to consider in the Ultra High Performance All-Season category.
