Downsizing to Smaller Diameter Wheels

Friday, October 28, 2011 by Gary Stanley
Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel PackagesIt's pretty common to see performance enthusiasts upgrade to larger diameter auto tires and wheels (rims & tires). If you're not familiar with the plus sizing concept, or just need a refresher, read "Plus Sizing 101." What about the other side of the coin? Why would someone want to minus size their tires wheels package and go to a smaller wheel diameter?

Listed below are a few options why going smaller makes sense:
  • Rough road areas: Combining taller tires with smaller diameter wheels will help absorb more impact. This setup helps protect the wheels and provides a softer ride.
  • Off-road use: Many off-road enthusiasts would like to maximize their wheel protection. And many accomplish this by minus sizing their wheels and using a taller set of offroad tires.
  • Economy: Often times, smaller diameter wheels and taller tires are less expensive than larger diameter wheels and low profile tires.
The majority of cases for minus sizing are done for Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Packages. When you shop by vehicle, our site will provide alternate tire and wheel options for your vehicle.

Comments on Downsizing to Smaller Diameter Wheels

I have a 2000 ford expedition Eddie Bauer version it has 265/70/17 on it can I put a smaller wheel on it without an effect on the speedometer
Monday, February 20, 2012 by Gary:
Mark,

Yes, you can minus size to 16" on the 2000 Expedition. To keep the speedometer reading the same, use size 265/75R16.

We have a 2008 honda civic. We are looking at putting 16' Factory HONDA WHEELS and Brand New DUNLOP TIRES size 195/55R16 on there. Will this mess up the car performance. If so how?
Tuesday, April 10, 2012 by Gary:
As long as the wheels are a proper fitment, the 195/55R16 should work well with no problem. 205/55R16 would be a closer match and would be preferred.

I have 31x10.5x15 on my 1994 Toyota 4x4. The alloy wheel is 15"x7" Can I downsize to 225/75/R15 street tires?
Wednesday, April 25, 2012 by Gary:
Yes the 225/75R15 will indeed fit on the 15X7 wheel and still has the correct fitment and load capacity.

I just bought a 2012 Kia Optima with 18" wheels and 225/45R/18 tires. What are my options for downsizing winter wheels/tires?
Monday, April 30, 2012 by Gary at Tire Rack:
If the Optima is a non turbo model, you can minus size to 16" with 215/60R16 or 17" with 215/55R17.
Wednesday, May 2, 2012 by Gary:
Sorry, I might need to clarify as I am unsure of your response. My car is a Canadian Spec Optima EX, no turbo but with 18" wheels and the larger brakes.
Is this the limiting factor on how small I could go? Does this limit me to the 17" wheels with 215/55/R17?

We have a 2011 Toyota Sienna with 17" wheels. can you recommend correct down sizing for some winter wheels?
Wednesday, June 6, 2012 by Gary:
Bill,

Unfortunately the large brakes on the 2011 Sienna do not allow for clearance of any of the 16" wheels that we sell which means 17" will be the smallest diameter I can recommend to fit.

Im wanting to find some tires for my 2002 camaro the tires it has now are 235/55/16 I would like to keep the 16" wheel on it but would like a different size tire (to make it a bit cheaper to replace) any suggestions to keep everything?
Friday, June 15, 2012 by Gary:
Vega,

Two other sizes can be used in your situation and I think you'll find that there are more options and better prices in both of them. They are size 215/60R16 and size 225/55R16

My 2011 Camaro has 245/45ZR20 on the front and 275/40ZR20 on the rear. I want to downsize to a 17x7 or 17x8 wheel. What tires would I need for these rims and still keep the speedo reading the correct mph.
Friday, July 6, 2012 by Gary:
Ed,

225/65R17 would be the correct match for speedometer accuracy.
Friday, July 6, 2012 by Ed:
Thanks Gary. Should I put 225/65R17
on the front and back? Should I go with the 7 or 8 inch wheels? Do you like any particular brand for my setup? (city driving on paved roads)
Monday, July 9, 2012 by Gary:
Ed,

The recommended rim width range on 225/65R17 is 6"-8" so either 7 inch or 8 inch wheels will work well. It is most common to run the same size front and rear when minus sizing on this car. In this size, I like the Yokohama Avid Envigor in particular.
Tuesday, July 10, 2012 by Ed:
Excellent Gary. I'll be placing an order just as soon as I make sure the stud pattern on the new rims is the same as my car.

Have a lexus ls 430 (2006) with the 245/45/18. Ride is too harsh for me. How can I soften it without affecting brakes, safety, ,etc. Can I use different size 18s or perhaps shift to a 17 inch wheel. Specific size recommendatiosn appreciated.
Thanks
Toup
Thursday, August 2, 2012 by Gary:
While there are no taller 18" sizes we've found that fit the 2006 LS430, you can indeed minus size to 17" to achieve a softer ride. To keep the correct overall diameter, use tire size 225/55R17. One of the softer riding tires we recommend for your car in this size is the Michelin Primacy MXV4.

Want to downsize from 225/55/17 summer to 225/60/16 winter package on a 2011 Chev. Impala LT. Is This a good choice, if not what do you suggest?
Thanks,

Monday, August 13, 2012 by Gary:
Bob,

Yes, you are correct. We would indeed suggest minus sizing to a 225/60R16 for winter use on the 2011 Impala LT.

Hello!

We purchased a Kia Rio5 sx 2013. It comes with 17" wheels and it has larger brake discs. Can I downsize to15" without affecting the car setup? Thanks for your advice!
Monday, August 27, 2012 by Gary:
Matt,

Yes, you can change from 20" wheels to 17" wheels on the 2012 Volvo XC90 for winter use. I would suggest using tire size 235/65R17 for winter use.
Monday, August 27, 2012 by Gary:
Pedro,

Unfortunately we do not yet have any fitment data on the 2013 Rio5 SX. I would suggest checking back with us in a couple of months.

i want to change my tire size on my 01 chev 1500 from a 235/75 16 to a 15 tire....is there anything you recommend that will keep the abs working and not throw the speedometer off too bad...i was told 245/75 15 would work but i can't find anyone that has that size
Wednesday, September 19, 2012 by Gary:
The 235/75R16 tire size is about 30 inches tall. The nearest I can find is 265/70R15 (29.5" tall) and 265/75R15 (30.5" tall).
Wednesday, September 19, 2012 by Casey:
Hi Gary,

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. I have a 2009 Accord with 235 45 18 tires on it, and I found a great deal on 195 60 15. I would only need them for a few months. The difference in diameter is only an inch, but can these be mounted on my car without problems?
Wednesday, September 19, 2012 by Gary:
Casey,

Unfortunately we haven't found any 15" wheels that will clear the brakes on the 2009 Honda Accord, sorry.
Friday, September 21, 2012 by Devon:
I have a 2011 Subaru Impreza 5dr and I recently purchased 15 inch wheels for it. I bought the wheels for winter/ off road use. I'm having a hard time finding what tire size i'd need on the internet. Any help would be appreciated.
Friday, September 21, 2012 by Gary:
Devon,

To keep the correct overall diameter, I would suggest tire size 195/65R15.

Is there any problem to replace my 17 inches to 16 inches rim for nissan rogue 2008
Monday, October 1, 2012 by Gary:
Robert,

Minus sizing to 16" wheels on the 2008 Nissan Rogue would be no problem
Monday, October 1, 2012 by Nick:
Hey, my current stock size tire is 245/45/17, if I replace them with 235/45/17, would there be any problems? I was told if there is a difference of 1%, the speedometer would be off, but I would like to know through a specialist like you guys to be sure.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012 by Gary:
Nick,

It might work, but in order to answer this for sure, I will need to know the year, make and model of your car.
Tuesday, October 2, 2012 by Gary:
Dave,

I can check on this for you. What model of Nissan are you referring to?
Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by nick:
hey gary, the year, make and model of my car is a 06 benz e350 4matic.
Wednesday, October 3, 2012 by Gary:
Nick,

While the 235/45R17 is a bit shorter in overall diameter, it will safely work on the 06 MBZ E350 4matic
Friday, October 5, 2012 by Michael:
Why doesn't Tire Rack allow for selecting smaller diameter wheels in the wheel searcher? Example: 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata comes with 17" wheels, but can AND SHOULD downsize to 15" to save up to 6 lbs per corner (and alot of money). Makes a dramatic difference. I can pick another 2005 Miata to get a selection down to 16", or an older year (with the same brakes and hub) to get down to 15", but Tire Rack should allow this for the vehicle selected when it's known that downsizing is viable.
Friday, October 5, 2012 by Gary:
Michael,

15" wheels do not clear the brakes on the vehicle in your example, however you can view 16" options that fit by clicking on the winter section link the blog. Simply enter the year and model of the vehicle there and select "16 inch packages". This will allow you to minus size on the site.

I just put 225/50/17 tires on my 2003 Accura MDX and didn't notice any difference then the standard size. It is such a big difference

Hi, looking for winter tires for 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited. OEM wheels are 19”. Would down sizing to 17” wheels cause any problems with brake system, or other sensors in the vehicle (spedometer, etc.)? Would this void vehicle warranty?
Friday, October 12, 2012 by Gary:
We have a variety of wheels in 17" for the 2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited that clear the brakes and work with no problem. Changing wheels or tires should not affect a vehicle warranty.

Yes, you can minus size to 17" or 18" on the 2010 Venza V6 AWD with no problem.

Unfortunately we have not found any 16" wheels that will clear the brakes on the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We know of no 17" steel wheels that fit it, but 17" aluminum alloy wheels are available for it.
Monday, October 29, 2012 by Gary:

Yes, you can indeed minus size to 175/65R15 on the 2012 Toyota Yaris SE.

Is 195/65/15 the right size?

Steve
Thursday, November 1, 2012 by Gary:
Vincent,

185/65R15 or 195/60R15 would be the sizes that we recommend when minus sizing to 15" on the 2005 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V.
Thursday, November 1, 2012 by Gary:
Steve,

We have not found any 16" wheels that clear the brakes on the 2009 MDX. When minus sizing to 17" on the 2009 MDX, we would recommend size 235/65R17.

I have a friend with a 03'-06' Grand Prix and she needs tires. Current size is 225/60R16. I have a good set of 215/60R16. Would there be any issues with these fitting the car?
Friday, November 2, 2012 by Gary:
Shane,

This should be no problem. I would suggest she uses 36psi when running this slightly smaller size.

I can check on this for you. What is the year, make and model of the vehicle?
Monday, November 5, 2012 by Gary:

You can indeed minus size to 16" on the 2013 Honda Accord. The suggested tire sizing to keep the correct overall diameter would be 205/65R16 or 215/60R16.

Hi Gary, I like the idea of better winter traction but the idea of my odometer racking up more miles than I'm actually driving scares me a bit.

Would it make sense for me to switch from the 225/55/17 stock Goodyear Eagle LS2 tires on my 07 Monte Carlo LT to 225/50/17 Michelin Primacy tires? I need tires badly and I have found some used Primacy MX4s in great shape, but I have concerns about the size difference.

Thank you for this informative article!

2000 Ford expedition in the shop, I called and they said it has 225 70 R16 (I am out of state traveling) I researched and it looks like this truck should have bigger tires?
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by Gary:
Pat,

We would not recommend going to a tire that is shorter in overall diameter on the 07 Monte Carlo LT. If you are keeping your stock 17" wheels, we recommend that you stick with 225/55R17.
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by Gary:
Kristina,

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with a Volvo vehicle called an S50. I have no data on this car.
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by Gary:
Greg,

It sounds like they mis-read the size. If they are 16" wheels, the 2000 Expedition uses size 255/70R16.

Hi,on my 2009 camry le,OE-215/60-r16.can i change to a 205-r16,if so what aspect ratio would be best? thanks, Rich
Friday, November 9, 2012 by Gary:
Rich,

The size you asked about changing to is the same size that is on the vehicle now...215/60R16. If you meant to ask about 15", they will not fit over the brakes on the 2009 Camry, sorry.

Friday, November 9, 2012 by Gary:

I have a 2012 Ford Escape LTD, 4WD, V6. I have 16" alloy rims. I'm looking at winter tires. I noticed most places recommend using 235/70R16. Can I use 215/70R16 ? I realize that my speedo will be off but how much will it affect my gas mileage ? Would it ok for me to go with this size?
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 by Gary:
Dave,

The size 225/60R16 is shorter in height and load capacity so we would not recommend using that size. You could use 225/65R16 or 215/70R16 if you would like to minus size to 16" on the 2011 Subaru Outback.
Tuesday, November 13, 2012 by Gary:
Mario,

215/70R16 is a full inch shorter in height than 235/70R16 and has less load capacity so it is not a size we would recommend using on the 2012 Ford Escape 4WD limited.

Hi,

I have a 2000 Maxima GLE with 215/55/16, I was wondering if it would be safe to install 205/70/15 for my winters.

Thanks
Monday, November 19, 2012 by Gary:
Scott,

As long as all four tires are the same size, the all-wheel drive system on the MDX would not be harmed.
Monday, November 19, 2012 by Gary:
Mark,

We have not found any 15" wheels that fit over the brakes on the 2005 Subaru Outback. It appears that you'll need to stick with 16" on this vehicle.
Monday, November 19, 2012 by Gary:
Lara,

Yes, 215/70R16 is indeed a good minus size fitment for the 2011 Nissan Rogue SV AWD.
Monday, November 19, 2012 by Gary:
Mark,

15" wheels can fit the 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE, but 205/70R15 may rub. Stick with 205/65R15 instead.

Bob,

There is a chance that it will clear but we do not know for sure since we do not carry that brand of wheel.

Amy,

Yes, 215/70R16 is indeed a good minus size fitment for the Nissan Rogue.

will this fit to my nissan rogue 2008
now we r using 215-17-16
Friday, November 23, 2012 by Gary:
J-F,

I'm sorry, we know of no 15" wheels that will clear the brakes on a 2009 Toyota Sienna LE.
Friday, November 23, 2012 by Gary:
Joel,

225/70R16 is a bit taller than we've tired on the 2008 Nissan Rogue so we do not know if that size will fit. 215/70R16 is a more typical size to use.

Hey there, I have a 2008 Subaru impreza sport. Im looking to put 195/60/15 tires on it for the winter. Can I pull that off?
Monday, November 26, 2012 by Gary:
Lyndsey,

If you move to 15" wheels, tire size 215/65R15 will fit but is a bit short. 215/70R15 would be a better choice.
Monday, November 26, 2012 by Gary:
John,

I'm showing the original tires on the 2008 Sedona EX to be 235/60R17. Yes, you can indeed minus size to 16" wheels using tire size 225/70R16.
Monday, November 26, 2012 by Gary:
Laura,

Yes, on the 2008 CX-7 you can minus size to either 235/65R17 or even 235/70R16 with no problem. Just click on the link for winter/snow tire packages for more details and pricing.
Monday, November 26, 2012 by g:
Nish,

Yes, that's exactly right. When minus sizing to 16" on the 2012 Honda Accord EX-L V6, tire size 215/60R16 will work well.

I have 2012 VW Passat TDI. Original tires are 215/60/R16. Can i go with 225/55/R17 winter tires if i get 17" rims?

I had a 2008 Honda Odyssey, with a set of winter tires on 16 steel rims. At end of lease we went with 2012 Odyssey, which comes with 17" mags (235/65 R17). For winter tires, I would like to downsize AND use my old steelies. Will the old winter rims fit (caliper, etc)? Will it interfere with Traction controls or ABS, etc.... If otherwise ok, What tire size should I go with? Tks !

I was wondering if you would be able to drop down to a 235/55R18 on 18x7 rims for the Toyota Seinna 2012 SE. It currently has 235/50R19. I am looking to put winter rims and tires on and where you can not get 19 steel winter rims I wanted to see if this would be an option or if 19 inch for the body would be the only option.
Not sure if you would know or not - just can't seem to find anyone that would know
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 by John:
Gary,
Thank you for the feedback on downsizing my Kia tires. Also, what flexibility in sizing/aspect ratio would I have for replacements to my P235-60R17 tires If I stay in the 17" size ?
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 by Gary:
Jamey,

Yes, you can minus size to 18" wheels on the 2012 Toyota Sienna SE and use 235/55R18. I'm not aware of any steel wheels in those sizes, but we do have relatively inexpensive alloy wheels that fit.
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 by Gary:
John,

225/65R17 would be the other size that we can recommend to fit the 2008 Sedona EX.

Thank you for your reply. As a follow up question: what is the smallest, least expensive tire I can run on the Max? Can I mount these 255/55 R16 tires on my wife's 2013 CR-V LX AWD? Thanks for the help.
Thursday, November 29, 2012 by Gary:
Joshua,

On the factory wheel, the smallest I know of that fits is 225/45R19. See the our web site for current pricing.

255/55R16 is not a current tire size.
Friday, November 30, 2012 by Joshua Whiten:

Steve,

We have not tried 215/55R16 tires on the 2012 VW Jetta so I am not sure if they would fit. The size is not much larger than the original so it is likely that it will work, but I cannot say for sure.

I'm currently using 235/65R17's on my Sedona. Is it a mistake to consider putting 235/45R17 tires on my vehicle? I already have low rear end issues on my van and I suspect this might aggravate the condition. Is my concern valid ?
Monday, December 3, 2012 by Gary:
Jason with the Dodge Grand Caravan,

225/60R16 will fit on the wheel but is a full inch shorter in height and has less load capacity than the original tire so it is not recommended.
Monday, December 3, 2012 by darryl:
I currently have a 2010 Malibu with all seasonal tires that measure 225 55R 17". I want to switch to a smaller tire and rim for the winter. I'm looking at buying 16" rims/tires, can you make any suggestions if this is possible and types of sizes of tires to look for. Thanks
Monday, December 3, 2012 by Gary:
Jason with the SUV,

What is the year and model of the vehicle in question?
Monday, December 3, 2012 by Gary:
KS,

175/70R14 is a full inch shorter in height compared to 185/65R15, so it is not a recommended size.
Monday, December 3, 2012 by Gary:
John,

Yes, 235/45R17 is much too small for a Sedona minivan by about four inches.

I have a 2008 Mazda3 with 205/50/r17 tires and want to know what size 16 inch tires would be compatible
Tuesday, December 4, 2012 by Gary:

On the 2013 Jetta GLI you can minus size to 17" using 225/45R17 or 16" using 205/55R16 with no problem. Click on the Winter / Snow Tire & Wheel Packages link in my blog for details.
Tuesday, December 4, 2012 by Gary:
Dan,

205/55R16 would be the size to use on the 2008 Mazda3 with 16" wheels.

If this is a base model 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0I, then 15" wheels are an option.

Both of those sizes are too large for a 2008 Civic. For 17", 215/45R17 or 225/45R17 would be recommended.

Yes, 215/70R16 does fit the 2012 Rav4 Limited and would make a good winter tire size with 16" wheels.
Monday, December 10, 2012 by Gary:

Yes, you can use 215/70R15 on 15" wheels on the 2002 Windstar with no problem.

Hello, I am trying to buy some winter tires, 2010 GMC Terrain, can I go from 225/65/17 to 225/60/17??
Monday, December 10, 2012 by Gary:
Tyler,

The 225/60R17 tire size is a full inch shorter in height and has less load capacity compared to 225/65R17 so we cannot recommend using that size on the 2010 GMC Terrain.

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by Gary:
Dave,

The smaller tire will fit the truck, but is about an inch and a half shorter in height so expect a larger wheel well gap and some speedometer inaccuracies.
Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by Gary:
Linda,

I agree with the Kia dealership that 195/65R15 would fit.

I have a 2009 Nissan Maxima 3.5 sv. understand that the recommended tire is a 245/45r18 but I am shopping winter tires and I have been advised to put 245s on the back tires and 22545r18s on the two front tires. Do these fit and why would I want to consider doing this?
Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by Gary:
Josée,

It is not recommended to stagger tires on the Nissam Maxima, nor should you mix different diameter tires on this car due to ABS and traction control problems.

Can 195/60r15 be put on a 2012 Ford Focus SEL Hatch?
Thursday, December 27, 2012 by Gary:
Sean,

16" tires do not fit on 17" wheels. There are 16" wheels available to fit the 2003 Mustang GT.
Thursday, December 27, 2012 by Gary:
Shaun,

235/60R17 is shorter in height and has less load capacity, so it is not a recommended size for the 2010 Mercedez R350.
Thursday, December 27, 2012 by Gary:
Ethan,

15" wheels will fit the 2012 Ford Focus SEL 5 door hatch, but the correct tire size would be 195/65R15.

Hi Gary,

Can I use a 215/60/R16 snow tire on my 2005 Dodge Caravan that takes a 215/65/R16?

Todd,

The subject of this particular blog is about about minus sizing to smaller diameter wheels. To answer your question about changing tires on your existing wheels, we do not recommend using tires that are shorter in overall diameter which is what would occur if you were to use the size you mentioned on the Dodge Caravan.

For the 08 Kia Optima LX you can minus size to 16" wheels with tire size 205/60R16 to maintain the correct diameter with no problem.
Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by Gary:
Benji,

If you minus size to 16" on a Legacy that originally came with 205/50R17, the correct size would be 205/55R16. The others you mentioned are too tall and may not fit.

Hi
I have a Kia SX with 17 '' tires and larger disk brakes than on the EX or LX. Can I use 15'' rims with snow tires? I read I can but at Kia they said that they don't have any experience with the change but they doubt it will fit because of the larger brake size...
As an alternative can I use 16'' rims? Thanks a lot! JJ

Yes, you can indeed use the factory 215/55R17 tires with the Elbrus I06 wheels that we list to fit your 2012 VW Passat. Your year and model of vehicle uses a monitoring system that does not use TPMS sensors, so installation will be as simple as swapping the tires over to the new wheels.

Yes, you can indeed minus size to 17" wheels on the 2006 F150 FX4. We would suggest size 265/70R17 to help keep a close overall diameter. To find 17" options, select 17" packages under the build your own package heading in the winter section of our site :

I have some (almost) new 15" winter tires & steel rims from a '97 Buick LeSabre, and I'd like to put them on my 2001 LeSabre. However, the 2001 has 16" factory rims (P225 60 R16), and the brake caliper is hitting the 15" rims. Is there any way to make the 15" rims fit my 2001 that is set up for 16" rims? Or am I going to be forced to purchase a set of 16" rims and tires? Thanks in advance for your help!
Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by Jess:
Hello!
I recent purchased a used 05 F250 Super Duty Turbo Diesel. It originally had 17in wheels and LT265/70RX17E OWL All Terrain tires. It now has Extra Load 275/60R20 on 20in MT Racing wheels. He never used the truck for towing... Which is the reason I purchased it. The tires are not 10ply which I need to pull heavy trailers/horses and they will need to be replaced soon. To replace with the current wheels the cost will be substantially higher than a smaller diameter tire. So my questions are... Should I downsize the wheels to a 17 or 18 (originally had stock 17s)? If I downsize will I have calibration issues, sensor issues, etc.? If I downsize will it affect the truck height much, even if I get taller/thicker tires? What wheel and tire size/type would you suggest for such a heavy truck and towing strength?
Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by Gary:
Brenda,

When the 2001 LeSabre is equipped with larger brakes that interfere with the fitment of 15" wheels. I know of no way around this.
Wednesday, February 6, 2013 by Gary:
Jess,

The total height of your 275/60R20 tires is 33". If you minus size to 265/70R17, the total height is 31.6". While this is not a very large difference for your 2005 F250, you could use size 285/70R17 to keep the same 33" overall diameter.

Hi,

I have a Kia Rio5 SX 2013 and currently have the stock 17 inch wheels and tires. I am wondering if I can downsize to 15inch (or if needed 16inch) wheels and tires for the winter. My SX has 11inch disc brakes in the front and 10.3inch discs in the back. If this is possible, are there basic steel wheels that would fit and what tire size would I need? Any models you recommend would be very helpful.

Thanks!

225/40R18 and 235/45R17 are close enough to each other in overall diameter that there would very little change in speedometer/odometer accuracy.

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 by Trevor G:
Hi Gary, thanks for taking my question. I read your blog often as I make my decision on my next set of tires.
I am buying tires for my 2009 RAV Limited V6 with 225/65-17 tires. I am going to be doing lots of off road travel in deep snow, ice and graveled roads in WV for the extended future. I am interested in an A/T tire but I can't really find one in my size I like besides the Yokohoma Geolander A/T-S.
Can I go up or down a size? What are your recommendations? I've also considered running the Pirelli Scorpion Verde and switching to a snow tire in my size. Thoughts?
Thanks for your time!

I have a 2002 Mitsubshi Eclipse GT with factory 17" rims. For winter tires will I be able to downsize to 15" rims? Or is 16" preferred?
Tuesday, March 12, 2013 by Gary:
Trevor,

Unfortunately we haven't tried taller tires on the Rav4, and the wider 245/60R17 size that we know to work is an odd size that offers no all-terrain tires.

The other all-terrain tire that is made in 225/65R17 is the Pirelli Scorpion ATR which is rated slightly higher in our customer survey data compared to the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S.

Winter tires will of course offer the very best in snow and ice traction, so that would be the ideal route to go if you are able to run a different set of tires for spring/summer/fall.

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 by Gary:
Albert,

The smallest wheel diameter that we have found to fit over the brakes on your 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT is 16". Use tire size 205/55R16 or 215/55R16 when minus sizing to 16" on your car.

I'm guessing that I can put them on without much problem except a slight "over-read" on the speedometer. Is this correct?
Friday, March 15, 2013 by Gary:
Mike,

You can indeed minus size to 17" on the 2011 Nissan Maxima SV with tire size 215/55R17. This size will offer a softer ride than most 18" setups. As a result of a taller sidewall, steering response will be slower.

Yes, you can indeed minus size from your factory 215/45R17 tires and wheels to a 16" wheel with 205/55R16 to give the vehicle a softer ride.

245/45/R18?

The front rims may be 18x8 and 18x9

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 by Gary:

The correct sizing to use would be 225/40R18 or 235/40R18 all around or 225/40R18 front and 255/35R18 rear.

Monday, March 25, 2013 by Gary:
Greg,

The 235/55R17 size carries enough load capacity to be safely used on the vehicle. Just keep in mind that the shorter height will show more fender well gap and cause some speedometer/odometer inaccuracy.

I have a front wheel drive Acura rsx type s that I want to downsize the wheel package on for autocross. My thought was decrease to a 15" or 16" by 8.5"-10" wide (whichever fits) and then run low profiles on it to increase the hole shot performance and weight savings. I would run narrower tires on the rear by roughly 2" from the fronts. I know doing this will affect the speedometer but, how does it effect the ride and tire options I need to consider? Also will this hurt and turning characteristics beyond making the tail pivot around easier?
Wednesday, March 27, 2013 by Gary:
Jeff,

The smallest diameter wheels that we have found to clear the brakes on the RSX Type S is 16". Use tire size 225/50R16 to maintain the correct overall diameter so that you will not have speedometer errors or ride quality problems.

Larry,

We sell several wheels in 18" that fit over the brakes on the 2013 F150 so there is a chance that your other wheels will fit. When using 18" on this truck we recommend tire size 255/70-18 or 275/65-18.

I have a 1998 honda accord lx and I am wondering if i can use 185/65R/14 instead 195/65R15.The 195/65R15 is the normal requirement but I have two 185/65R/14 tires that I want to use on the same rim.Is this going to be an issue for my car? Thank you in advance for the help.
Tuesday, July 9, 2013 by Gary:
Ameden,

185/65R14 tires require 14" wheels to mount to. We have not found any 14" wheels that fit over the brakes on the 1998 Honda Accord.

Hi,
I have a 2012 Toyota Rav4. Wondering if I can put 225/45R17 snow tires on? I believe the factory originals are 225/60r17. Thank you for your help!
Monday, July 15, 2013 by Gary:
Matt,

The subject of this particular blog is about minus sizing to smaller diameter wheels. We do not recommend installing tires that are shorter in total diameter/height on your factory wheels due to the tires having too little load capacity. Using a tire as small as 225/45R17 on a 2012 Rav4 could lead to a catastrophic tire failure.

225/70R16 is much taller than we have tried to fit on a 2000 Subaru Outback so I do not know if it will fit. My gut feelings is that it would rub.
Monday, July 22, 2013 by Gary:

We have not found any 15" wheels that fit over the brakes on the 2007 Toyota Sienna. If the wheels do fit, then 205/70R15 would be a good size to use to keep the correct overall diameter for speedometer accuracy.

I have a 2007 Scion Tc Spec with 18" Alloy wheels and 225/40-18 Tires. I am trying to downsize to a smaller wheel since i keep cracking them and keep getting flat tires. I keep hearing that i cannot downsize due to the size of the break pads. what would you recommend?
Tuesday, July 30, 2013 by Gary:
Jennifer,

You can indeed still minus size on the 2007 Scion Tc Spec with 18" Alloy wheels. Although the vehicle does have moderately large brakes, we have a variety of wheels that with with no problem. My suggestion would be 16" with 205/55R16 or 225/50R16 tires.

Last week my wife and I bought a 2008 Acura RDX base with SH-AWD,it has 57,000 miles. The stock rims are 18" and the existing tires are fairly new Kumho solus KL21. Unfortunately we now realize after driving it in our familiar daily routes and doing some research that the RDX is known for having a hard jerky ride. Would changing tires to say a Goodyear Assurance Comfort-tred which is labeled as a touring tire help soften the ride or would changing down to a 17" wheel with a touring tire verses a performance tire have a much greater result. We are not looking for a day and night difference, but we need a descent improvement.

Monday, August 12, 2013 by Gary:

The Assurance Comfortred Touring would be a slightly softer ride compared to the Kumho Solus KL21. You can make a more dramatic difference in ride quality by minus sizing to a 17" setup with 225/65R17 tires.

Yes, we do carry 16" wheels that fit over the brakes and work well with tire size 225/70R16 on the 2010 Honda CR-V LX. You would of course need different wheels but you can use the same air pressure.
Wednesday, August 14, 2013 by Gary:

Hi,

2013 Chevy Spark LS stock 15" rims. Can I downsize to 14" or 13" rims? Thanks.
Friday, September 27, 2013 by Gary:
Paul,

The subject of this particular blog is about minus sizing to smaller diameter wheels. We do not recommend installing tires that are shorter in total diameter/height on factory wheels due to the tires having too little load capacity.
Friday, September 27, 2013 by Gary:
Fred,

205/60R16 is shorter in overall diameter than we recommend for the 2013 Accord Ex-L V6. We recommend 215/60R16 when minus sizing to 16" on your car.
Friday, September 27, 2013 by Gary:
Ramiro,

Yes, you can indeed minus size to 14" wheels on the 2013 Chevy Spark.

This would depend almost entirely on the vehicle in question.
Tuesday, October 1, 2013 by Gary:
225/60R16 is shorter than recommended for a 2008 Toyota Rav4. Better sizes to use would include 215/70R16 and 225/70R16.

Thursday, October 10, 2013 by Gary:
Isreal,

The subject of this particular blog is about minus sizing to smaller diameter wheels. We have not tried taller tires on the 2008 ES350 so we are not sure if they would fit, but my best guess would be that they would not work.
Thursday, October 10, 2013 by Gary:

Monday, October 21, 2013 by Gary:

As long as you use a correct tire size to maintain the overall diameter such as 245/60R18, this setup would be no problem on the 2014 Ford Explorer Sport.

215/60R15 is much smaller in height and load capacity so we cannot recommend using it on your 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. If minus sizing to 15", use size 215/70R15.

I also have winter tires from my previous car which are 195/55/r15. Would these work on the new Mazda3, or do I need to buy new tires for the old 15" rims, something like 195/65/r15? Lastly, will the 195 width work or should I stick with 205?

Just trying to figure out whether I need a completely new winter tire package or if there's anything I can reuse.

When minus sizing to 17" on the 2010 Chevy Impala LTZ, we use size 225/55R17 to keep the same overall diameter. 235/55R17 should also fit.

We do not recommend installing tires that are shorter in total diameter/height on factory wheels as this negatively affects load capacity and tire durability. If you're looking for better handling, choose a more performance oriented tire in your stock size, such as the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S03.

I just got a 2014 Mazda CX-5 GT AWD with original size of 225/55r19. The dealer mentioned that I can keep my existing 225/55r18 winters and they just put them on 18" rims. Now that I got the car and looked at some size charts I see that there is a -3.48% difference in overall diameter... I've heard that the recommended limit is +/-3% and was wondering if that extra -0.48% would actually make a critical difference. If it does, or maybe just for next winter, what would be the best recommended downsize in 18"? Thanks

When minus sizing on the 2009 Scion TC, you'll use tire size 205/55R16. 215/60R16 is too tall.

I have a 96 jeep gr cherokee, im currently running 31x10.5 r15s, I have a set of 225/40r18s with rims, by switching to the smaller tire for on road use will it increase my fuel economy? Im currently getting 9mpg with the 31s and my ride to work just got really expensive due to moving... is this possible and pheasable to save a little money?
Wednesday, June 18, 2014 by Gary:
Justin,

Size 225/40R18 is too short in height and load capacity to be used on the Grand Cherokee. For a less aggressive tire size that may help fuel economy slightly, check out 225/75R15.

The OEM tires are 205/70/15 so they should have no issue as far as mounting - but according to the calculators they are about 8% smaller circumference - meaning at 60mph the speedo will read 55mph. Wednesday, October 8, 2014 by Gary:
Marc,

While it is outside of the recommended rim width range, it is possible to mount 215/50R17 tires on 17X8 wheels. The tires will be stretched and will not perform optimally.

Can I put on 215/60 R17 for the winter?
Wednesday, October 8, 2014 by Gary:
Clou,

The subject of this particular blog is about minus sizing to smaller diameter wheels. To answer a question about what larger size tire would fit your vehicle, I will need to know the year and model of the vehicle in question.

I have a 2014 Ford Fusion with 235/45/18. I want to downsize for winter and using some online calculators I found 215/55/17 would give me the same diameter. Looking at the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 on a 17 x 7 wheel with a 40 offset (current offset it 55)

Thanks for the info on my Legacy & Grand Caravan. Would these work on a 1998 Chevy Lumina sedan (currently has 205/70R15 and I'm trying to determine if I can use the 225/60R16 studded tires in my garage).
Thursday, October 9, 2014 by Gary:
Fred,

Yes, with 16" wheels, you can use 225/60R16 tires on the 1998 Chevy Lumina.

Hi, I have a 2012 Chevy Malibu. I would like to get blizzak winter tires. My regular tires are 225/50R18. Your tire and wheel package suggest downsizing to 215/60R16. Is it okay to go down two sizes from an 18 to a 16? Will it affect my braking, warranty, or anything else?
Monday, October 13, 2014 by Gary:
Pam,

While I cannot speak for Chevrolet's vehicle warranty, I can state that 215/60R16 tires on 16" wheels work very well on the 2012 Chevy Malibu and would be an ideal setup for winter use.

Mike,

The subject of this particular blog is about minus sizing to smaller diameter wheels. We do not recommend installing tires that are shorter in total diameter/height on factory wheels as this negatively affects load capacity and tire durability.

My 2014 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Limited with Eyesight came with 225/55R18 tires. For winter, I have installed 225/60R17 tires on 17 inch wheels. I see that the diameter difference is negligible (2.9 mm). Speedometer reading is suppose to be negligible. However, local Subaru Service said the change could affect the Eyesight, odometer, and transmission. What is your opinion?
Friday, October 17, 2014 by Gary:
Lee,

We would agree with your choice of minus sizing to 225/60R17 with no problems.

205/65R16 is a bit taller than we've tried, so I would have to recommend that you stick with 215/60R16 on this vehicle.

Yes, while 225/65R17 is a bit shorter than the original tire, it does carry enough load capacity to be a safe fitment for the 2007 Acura MDX when using 36psi in the tires.

I am wondering if 7x16 ET5 steel rims with bolt pattern of 6x139.7 off from a chevy truck could be used for my 2014 Kia Sedona. I would be able to get the rims for next to nothing and also the chevy truck tire size 225/75/16 seems comparable to the 225/70/16 that come standard on Sedona EX models. The OEM tires on my Kia Sedona LX are 235/60/17. Just seeing if I can find rims locally that would work and purchase tires through tire-rack. Also, the smaller diameter tires may be a little less and more effective in snow, mileage, etc. Is there any charts that show what would work (ie alternate wheel/tire combinations other than OEM)?

I used the Tire Rack website and I have 5 package choices; 3 recommended and two alternates. Is it safe to say that any of the wheel choices from the website will have sufficient clearance for the brakes and that the wheel packages have the correct bolt patter (5-114) ? If I choose the 16" package ( 215/70 R16 tire with 16 X 7.5 wheel) will there be a significant difference on the odometer and mpg readings?

I was looking at a winter wheel/tire package. The winter package is 215/65R15 on 15" wheels. The original tires are 225/50R17 on 17" wheels. My question is: will the 15" wheel package lower the car? I have a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid and it doesn't have that much ground clearance already and I wanted to make sure that downsizing the winter wheels wouldn't decrease ground clearance.

Yes, if you are shopping by vehicle, the resulting list is the list of sizes and fitments that we guarantee to work. There will be no changes on speedometer or odometer readings as we are recommending setups that are the same overall diameter.
Tuesday, November 11, 2014 by Gary:
Paul,

215/65R15 tires and 225/50R17 tires have the same overall diameter, so there would be no effect on the tire height. This means that the car would not be lowered.
Tuesday, November 11, 2014 by Gary:

I happen to have 2 brand new tires and rims in the shed from several years back when I had a different ford truck but they are LT 235/75/R15 which are approximately 29" in diameter, and the 2 good as of now stock tires on the front are LT 265/70/R17.
