I have been a Kumho guy for over 20 years. Owned 2 sets of the Platinum LX. Tires seem to drop off the inside tread prematurely. Both vehicles were aligned. All alignment specs are ok. 40k is the most mileage I could safely run these tires. Probably will not give them another chance. Snow traction is fair a best. But all other areas they are above average. I'll still buy Kumho in the future.

February 17, 2014

Purchased these tires thru TireRack to replace the P Zero Nero's on the X3 when I bought it used. (96K miles, now at 103K after 4 months!) We took the X on a 1200-mile road trip with the Pirellis still on it, then changed to the PA31s just before the winter driving season. (Oregon allows AWD passenger vehicles with M&S tires to opt out of chains when otherwise required, but I wanted new, deep tread to feel comfortable!) Driving away from the tire shop after the changeover, the difference in the feel became apparent at the curb, pulling onto the street/highway. Literally. The ride with the M Sport package was expected to be firm, even downsized to 235/50-18, but with the Pirellis it was still pretty jarring. This tire was instantly more comfortable, both from a ride and noise standpoint. Road trip to San Diego (2000 miles R/T) was very smooth, and the tires were equally at home at 80 on the freeway and through sweeping curves. Absolutely no tramlining on grooved pavement, which we hit several times on that trip. The first snow of the year was followed by very cold air, which kept snow on the ground for a week -- very unusual for this area, but a great chance to try out the tire and the AWD on the X3. Both excellent in over 6" of snow. Not Blizzaks, to be sure, but I was pleasantly surprised with test stops, up to activating the ABS. Haven't measured tread depth after 6K miles but still look and feel very good. I was nervous about buying Kumho for this demanding an application, but have since bought a set for my son's Subaru, and will consider for other vehicles as well. Pretty unbeatable for the money.

I went from having 18" Pirelli PZero Nero's to buying a 16" rim with these Kumho Sense tires and the difference couldn't have been greater. With the 18's road noise was almost unbearable. You almost couldn't carry on a conversation and the noise was even present at low speeds. Now the cabin is silent. With the 18's any amount of snow meant I was going nowhere. I would get stuck in a parking spot with less than an inch of snow. I almost couldn't turn and acceleration had to be done extremely slowly. Now wherever I point the steering wheel is where I go. I don't have to worry about sliding off the road or getting stuck in a parking spot. These kumho's have even improved my mpg. Before I was getting around 28-30mpg now I'm hitting high 30's. My only regret is waiting so long to downsize my rims. I also want to thank tirerack for the awesome service. I ordered my tire/rim combo on a Saturday and received them on Tuesday. They were shipped right to my door premounted and balanced. All I had to do was bolt them on. I checked with my local tireshop to see what it would cost for the same product and their quote was $200 more. I am definitely going to be doing business again with tirerack. You've just gained a customer for life.

I bought this tire after reading reviews off tirerack.com All i gotta say is this tire exceeds my expectations. I live in minnesota so i drove through rain, shine, snow and so far its a improvement over the previous kumho kr21 and uniroyal tigerpaw touring. Where the tire really shine is wet and snow traction over the previous tires Ive had. Wet roads are confident with little to no spinoff unless heavy throttle is applied. Snow traction is great i can actually hear and feel it biting over 3-6 inches of snow covered roads. I am a lot more confident driving this van now in the winter than ever before. Noise levels are reasonably low and steering is quick and precise i can take an off ramp going over 30mph with "NO" tire squealing problem whatsoever. Overall this tire well worth the money and makes my van goes where ever i want it to with no worry.

Good Tires From Kumho, Hankook, Sumitomo and General

Thursday, February 20, 2014 by Cy Chowattukunnel

In the tire game, Kumho, Hankook, Sumitomo and General may not be common household names to some, but our testing and customer feedback proves they make some great tires. How do they do this? Specialization.

The vehicle market is so diverse, making it a huge challenge for a single tire manufacturer to engineer the right tire for every car, SUV, crossover and light truck. It's not easy to fine-tune tires appropriate for the Ford F-150, FIAT 500 and the vast spectrum of vehicles in between. The end result is specific tires dominating in specialized areas.

Are you searching for great steering response, good wet grip and value in a sporty size? If so, the Kumho Ecsta 4X needs to be on your list. Do you put heavy emphasis on treadwear and light snow traction? Take a look at the Hankook Optimo H727. When looking for a 315/35R17 tire for the back axle of your muscle car, it's hard to beat the Sumitomo HTR Z's combination of value and performance. Finally, if you're looking for a tire at a reasonable price, with good wet grip and a cool tread design, check out the General G-MAX AS-03.

I read the reviews of this tire and have to laugh when people say they are weak in the dry traction area. I drive VERY spirited through tight mountain roads and they are fantastic. They out preform the Michelin, Kumho, and Continental sport tires hands down. These things stick like glue and lose traction very predictably. If you have trouble with traction or ultimate grip with these tires it is NOT the tires lol. My son runs the DZ 1, I know it is a softer compound then the 101, on and his M3 suspension binds before his tires lose grip. He has run both and had the same experience I had. I bought them on this site and am thinking about getting them again for another car. They do not last as long as the others I mentioned but that is the trade off for the grip you get. My "5" means average my "10" means exceeds expectations.

I bought these tires a month ago to replace tires damaged by road debris. These are by FAR the best tires I've had on this car, including OEM Potenzas, Kumho Solus KH16, two sets of General Altimax HP. The General's were pretty good, but wore fast and did not corner/brake on snow well. These Pirelli's are amazing. The car is noticeably quieter and rides smoother -- it's like a new car. We have had a snowy winter so far in CT so I have had many chances to test these on snow and ice. I have had snow tires on other cars that didn't perform this well. Truly impressive. Yesterday I drove up the steep hill to my house on 8 inches of unplowed, unsalted snow without so much as a slip. A Subie and these tires is unstoppable! Very, very happy with this purchase... would buy again in a heartbeat.

I recently switched from my Kumho summer tires to my Blizzaks on my 2008 BMW M3. I could not be more impressed by the performance of these tires! It took my m3 from a helpless baby to what could be mistaken as an AWD to unknowing spectators. Takes on steep, snowy driveways like nobodies business. Thoroughly enjoy having my parking spot at the TOP of the driveway back again. Also, with these tires this car is unbelievably fun to whip nuts in parking lots with! People think I'm crazy for driving my car in the winter, but with the fun these tires let me have I wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you Bridgestone, you truly improved my winter by 100%.

Worst tires you can possibly use in snow/ice. Does not have any traction and the car won't come to stop, every time you press brakes ABS kicks inn and the car will just slide. Trend wear is not good either, had to change these tires out at 28,000 miles. Went with continental pure contact and they are much better in snow. Hyundai, start using better tires in your cars.

This set replaced the Dunlop Sport Signatures which lasted about 5 1/2 years or about 40,000 miles with proper tire inflation and regular rotation. Hopefully, these will perform just as good. I've never used of the brand before but because of the price, specs and included road hazard warranty, it's hard to not give it a try. Snow performance and tread life remains to be observed.

I knew our winter tires were due for replacement and intended to shop around on Tire Rack. We had the Prius in for service at our Toyota dealer when they called me and noted we were down to the wear indicators on our Continental Conti Winter Contact tires. (The Contis had been a good winter tire and I would still consider them) I agreed to have them put on these all season Kumhos. What a mistake. After 27000 miles these tires are shot. Down to the wear indicators. I've just ordered new Pirelli P7 Plus from Tire Rack. No more Kumhos for me.

I bought these before going through a major snow storm in New York and they handled great! Went everywhere in 2wd. The next winter had about 6-7" "which was less in NY storm" of snow and handled great but had to use 4wd, due to the fast tread wear. Did not like the tread wear and cupping on steer tires. Rotate every 5k miles and still got cupping. My alignment is SPOT, SPOT on with in .01 degrees on and all new steering parts before install. I myself am a mechanic for a living and made sure that was all done. Had to adjust rear tire and front tire pressure every rotation to get even wear and try to mitigate the wear issues.

These tires did okay in the mountains and were okay in the mud/wet dirt roads. I do get A LOT A LOT of spinning on wet roads and turns after/during rain conditions. Did not like the longevity of the tires, seemed to be too short for what people were saying they got. Would not recommend these tires for someone looking for a long lasting tire on a truck.

Hope this review helps.

Very pleased with tires so far. Only driven 2000 miles, but, the ride comfort, noise and what I would call compliance of the tires are very much to my liking.

For over 10 years I have purchased only Michelins becasue I knew they would track staight, handle well in all conditions, and last for over 60,000 miles. They cost a bit more but I was not willing to take chances based on some poor choices in the past. When it was time to buy tires for our Honda CRV I cringed at paying over $650 installed for the Defenders and I looked for other options. I noticed the Kumho Sense and decided that if I was going to go cheap, I might as well go really cheap so I began to investigate the tire. I could not find any tests, but all of the reviews I could find were positive. The look of the tire reminded me of the Michelin X so I took a chance and purchased a set. So far I could not be more pleased. They track straight, ride well, and handle well in both dry and wet conditions. Every once a while it feels like there is a bit of flex or squirm in the sidewall, but it could just be my imagination because the OEM Bridgestones I replaced were very stiff. I would like to see a Tire Rack Test to verify my assessment. I would buy these tires again and recommend them without hesitation. I have also never written a review of any product but I felt that others could benefit from my experience due to the lack of available test data. Again, you will not regret buying a set of these tires. They perform very well and this is from a die-hard Michelin guy.

Just got these installed today and I'm shocked to notice that they are noticeably quieter than that Michelins. It seems that at about 60 they kinda shake a bit but I'm figuring they may still be waiting to be broken in. Haven't been in any rain to get a rate on that side but I'm a bit fearful after reading previous reviews about how they did handle in the rain. Just praying on that end.

First set of Kumho tires I've ever purchased and I'm very pleased so far. There is a limited selection of tires for an E34 Touring, and when Michelin quit making these size tires, I purchased Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum. They are quiet, handling is excellent, and they perform fine in heavy rain. The BMW tech was surprised at how little weight correction was needed to bring them into perfect balance. No abnormal wear or issues at 4,000 miles. They cost substantially less than equivalent speed rating Michelin tires. I only averaged 50,000 miles or so on several sets of Michelin Grand Touring tires before they needed replacement for hydroplaning reasons, so I'm anxious to see the final mileage I achieve on these Kumho tires.

I did a lot of reading before selecting these tires. I needed to replace the Kumho's that came standard on my Sonata. The original tires were the worst I've ever encountered in snow. I was afraid that all my research on buying the Sonata was wrong. I live in New York and although we don't get a lot of snow, the past two years have been above average. The new Continental tires on my car made a world of difference. We just got 14" of snow and my car went everywhere I asked, without spinning and sliding. I was not driving through 14" of snow, but the plowing still left a lot of snow on the ground and did not cause me any problems. I would not recommending these tires, or buying them again. The only thing that I cannot comment on is the tread-life and I've only put about 5,000 miles on them so far. I hope this has been beneficial.

I'm having trouble closing the gap between most other reviews, Tire Racks test of this tire, and my experience. Replaced the OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE92's with these and the ride is a little softer and much quieter, but steering response is terrible. I'm seeing few complaints of this in the reviews, and Tire Rack puts steering response as one of the strong points of the tire, but I can drive down the highway, wiggle the steering wheel, and feel the car yaw like a boat. It's a similar feeling to when I drive my parents 12 yr old Buick LeSabre, not really an acceptable driving characteristic in anything in a "performance" category. Outright grip when cornering and braking seems good, but again, any steering inputs mid corner result in a delay while the outside tires load up, then the requested change in direction. Maybe I was spoiled by the rock hard sidewalls of the run-flat Bridgestones, but I find it hard to believe all tires in this category behave like this.

Initial Review, 6,000 Miles on Tires
December 21, 2011

I bought these tires for my 02 GMC 1500HD Crew Cab 4x4. The look is awesome but as soon as I switched my for these my gas mileage dropped bad. My mileage went from 10 city 19 highway to 8.5 city and 12.5 highway. By my calculations I will use an extra 1400 Gal of gas, yes 1400 Gal compared to my older tires durring the life of the tire. The cool looks are not worth the SEVERE loss in gas mileage. I have driven about 6000 miles and the tread is only worn about 3/32 which is not bad for a M/T tire. I rotate my tires every oil change which is 3000 miles. The noise level is starting to get worse with the more mileage that I put on these tires. I used the chalk trick to find the correct air pressure which was 45 in the front and 35 in the rears for even tread wear.
