Special or Sport: Which KONI product is right for your vehicle?

Friday, June 18, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
Shock absorbers can be complicated if you're not precisely sure about your individual needs. There are a variety of shock options, and each option directly affects ride comfort and stability—even safety. Take a look at the following force velocity graph:
The red portion of the graph represents KONI Special shocks and the yellow portion represents KONI Sport shocks. Any crossover in performance is indicated by the color pink. In essence, the graph is a visual representation of the adjustment range. The column marked "A" represents damper speeds that result from braking, accelerating and rolling. Column "B" represents road hazards like bumps and railroad tracks.

Based on the chart, you can see that KONI Special shocks compromise the most in terms of road handling and comfort. Sport shocks, on the other hand, are made for aggressive driving. Read "Comparing KONI Special vs. KONI Sport" in our library of Suspension Tech articles and then shop by vehicle for a specific list of components that are right for yours.

BMW M Roadster Suspension Upgrade

Friday, May 21, 2010 by Brandon Lorenc
1999 BMW M Roadster

Take a look at the BMW Shock Absorber and overall suspension upgrade I did on my 1999 BMW M Roadster before I traded it a couple years back. I do miss it, and was verry happy with the suspension upgrade I did on the car.

First I installed the KONI Sport Shocks. They offered great performance and rebound adjustability so the ride didn't suffer any more then I wanted. At the same time, I lowered the vehicle with some H&R Sport Springs with a very mild drop of 1.3 inches. Here is a picture of the finished product!

Bilstein Shocks: What Shocks are Right for Me?

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 by Derrick Ling
A very common question when it comes to shocks that I get is, "What is the biggest difference between all the shocks?" or "Why are the Bilstein so much more money over the other shocks?" or even " Are they really that much better then KYB or KONI?"

Well here is the answer to that.

There is a reason the Bilstein's do cost more, and there is a performance difference between all of the shocks. Bilstein shocks carry a lifetime warranty unlike KYB or KONI. Bilstein shocks and struts will last 4 times longer then the Orginal Equipment shocks and struts. They are also designed to improve the ride, handling and control of your vehicle. Bilstien is able to do this due to the quality of the shocks material and the specially designed valving system that Bilstien has designed. Bilstein has been in busniess longer then I can remember and for years manufactures have been trying to copy what they do, and have not been able to come close. This is because of Bilstein's extensive research and the quality of material used to build there shocks and struts. By using top notch quality material when building there shocks and struts, is the main reason you end up with a product that works so well and is able to carry a lifetime warranty.
In my opinion, the Bilstein Shocks are well worth the money and will dramatically improve the comfort and ride quality of your vehicle. If you are looking for a way to improve the ride quality and performance of your vehicle, Bilstein is the way to go. Don't settle for second best when you can have the best built shock in the business.

To see if these Mustang shocks will work for you, you'll want to search our entire collection of aftermarket suspension products.

Koni Shocks

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 by Tire Rack Team

KONI has been producing equipment for the transportation industry since 1857, but now they are primarily known for high performance and racing KONI shocks.

And those KONI shocks are known for producing superb performance and enhanced car control. KONI experts know that every vehicle has a different dampening system, which is why they custom build a wide variety of shock absorbers using three different technologies: twin-tube hydraulic, mono-tube high pressure gas, and twin-tube low pressure gas. The result is a shock absorber tweaked to perfection that lasts a lifetime—and often outlasts the vehicle itself.

Koni shocks are available in two different performance categories:

• KONI Special shock absorbers Typically painted red, these KONI shocks please drivers seeking to improve general vehicle comfort and handling.

• KONI Sport shock absorbers Typically painted yellow, these KONI shocks focus on exceptional road handling.

Shock Absorber Reviews

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 by Tire Rack Team
We do a lot of testing. And not just on the tires we sell.. We want to know all there is to know about the suspension products we sell. By educating ourselves in this way, we can better serve you throughout your purchase. If we can't drive with it—we wouldn't suggest that you drive with it.

For example, "KONI Sport Ride & Drive...An Absorbing Experience" takes a look at how KONI Sport Shock absorbers in soft and firm settings held up against Original Equipment Lexus IS300 shock absorbers. On the road, the "firm" KONI shock absorbers provided responsive handling, but supplied a "jiggly" ride. In other words, potholes were noticeable. We wouldn't recommend this setting for all drivers all of the time, but the "soft" setting might be the answer. (Read More)

And, it never hurts to get a second opinion, which is why we post the shock absorber reviews that our consumers write. Here's what they're saying about the KONI Sport Suspension Kit:

" Wow, what a difference from stock! These struts really changed the character of the car; it doesn't seem quite so cheap anymore. The ride and handling are light years better. I highly recommend them." -- Nissan Sentra, Colorado

Koni Sport adjustable shocks large improvement over old original shocks.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 by Gary Stanley
I bought my 1997 Audi A4 with almost 100,000 miles on it.  After replacing the wheels and tires I was shocked at how poor the ride and handling felt.  The problem was the old suspension.

After updating to Koni Sport Shocks and Eibach lowering springs, the car felt just like it should.

Noticeable differences :
  • Reduced body roll when cornering
  • Reduced pitch and dive when braking and accelerating
  • A much more controlled ride
  • Much improved cosmetic appearance from lowering
These changes made a night and day difference, and even though my car had very high mileage it felt like a new car.

KONI Damper Set Improves the Mini

Friday, July 10, 2009 by Mark Veldman
After hitting 60,000 miles on the my Mini Cooper S, I could tell it was time (and maybe a little late) for replacement shock absorbers.  The car wasn't settling as quickly after dips in road and small bumps were becoming much more noticeable.  I considered shocks from a few different manufacturers like KYB, KONI and Bilstein.  But after reading the shock absorber reviews on, I decided to go for the KONI FSD Damper Set.  I have had great experiences in the past with Koni shocks, so I had high hopes for the Damper Set.

The customer reviews were correct...the Koni FSD Damper Set was fantastic.  The handling was improved with quicker response to steering inputs and less bounce after bumps or unsettling maneuvers.  But true to the customer feedback, the ride quality actually improved absorbing bumps in a more subtle fashion than the stock shocks.

The Koni FSD Damper Set is a definite step up from standard shock absorbers, but there are also a huge step up in ride quality and performance.
