I am ridiculously happy with these tires. They have been on the car for nearly 2.5 years and 35K miles. The DWS in the tread is still all visible; S is supposed to disappear first, indicating that snow use is not advised. Our WA freeways are pretty rough, so they are a little noisy, but on a smooth surface they are still very quiet. I have more issue with the wind noise from the ski box then with tire noise. I have only driven in light (2") and packed snow and I felt very confident. The Tiguan is kind of a GTI-inspired SUV, and the handling is crisp and responsive and the Contis enhance the driving experience. I like these so much I put them on the wife's G37x Infiniti in January. The OEM-supplied Dunlops tramlined severly; these have greatly reduced that symptom. Not enough time or miles yet to make additional comment.

I live just outside of the Washington, DC area, home of the just about the worst traffic in the country. Luckily, my daily commute consists mostly of free flowing highway driving with light traffic (down the new ICC toll-road) so 70+ mph is my usual pace there. Otherwise, my normal driving is suburban stop & go, daily grind, sort of stuff. These Kumho Ecsta 4X tires are my 3rd set of tires on this vehicle and by FAR the best I've used. The stock tires were Goodyear Eagle RSA's and as the reviews for those state, they were completely average tires with poor handling in anything but dry conditions. My next set of tires, Yokohama Avid V4S were old standby's that I'd had before on a previous vehicle. They were great tires, especially for the money. At 107,500 I was ready to purchase new tires as I usually always can get 50K+ mi. out of my tires. I read a lot of reviews about the newly redesigned Yoko's but couldn't help noticing the great reviews that the Kumho Ecsta's had received. I took a shot many years ago with Yoko's and have been really happy with them on both my G35x, Ford Explorer, and my Honda Accord V6 coupe. Sorry for the rambling, but just wanted to give some background. In any case, the price on the Kumho Ecsta's was great, and the trusted Tire Rack reviews convinced me to give them a shot on my G. I've had these Ecsta's now for 16,500 mi. from 2/20/13 to current (one year) and loved every minute of these tires. The ride is great, the noise level is adequate, and handling whether through our 90+ degree HUMID summer to our 10 degree lows in several inches of snow in the winter has been nothing short of spectacular at every level. I would highly recommend these tires.

After 3 years of service, and driving throught the hot highways of Central Florida, I definately will be looking for this brand and tirerack.com for my next purchase. It came as OE for my infiniti which is AWD. I am researching tires for my other car as unfortunately I sold my infiniti, over this last snow storm my new car slipped and ran into curb causing lots of damage. Any case I used to drive on these tires in snow and quater inch ice. Actually I was the designated driver for my co workers as they usually got stuck at home due to ice. I live up a hill and had no major trouble getting in and out with significant ice on the road and no one else on the street even trying to attempt the drive.
The reason I chose to write this review was most infiniti EX owners are unhappy with this tire. I had a very different experience with them.
The road noice was better then average. They seemed to absorb pot holes well. Dry and wet traction was above average ( never really could slip them despite quite aggressive driving ) ---- near close to Bridgestone potenza pole one my BMW 535i ( which is the highest rated tire for that car), another comparison I can do is for the duler sport AS which are again OE on Infiniti JX AWD (highly rated on tire rack surveys ) again these Dunlop beat them hands down in snow and ice traction. I suspect duler sport AS might be some better in summer/ dry conditions.
I suspect some folks expect too much from their all season cross over tires. They are not summer performance tires. My suspicion is that owners of small cross overs with powerful engines think that their cars should perform like sports cars they really are not , the chassis is too soft (for compliant ride) center of gravity is too high. Infiniti EX will never perform like a BMW 335i or 535i all of these have v6 motors and about 300 horses to spare. That is one reason I swapped EX with a S5 which is sitting at a body shop.
I usually don't write reviews but reading these mixed reviews about dunlops I felt like I needed to share my thoughts/experience.

One of the best all round tires I've seen for passenger cars and minivans. I've had this tire on 2 minivans, a 1994 and 2007 Caravan and a 2002 Subaru Outback. On the Outback, they would pull through 8" of snow with no problem. Have never had an issue with wet traction or hydroplaning on any of the vehicles. I have 86,000 miles on them on the 2007 Caravan, and even at that point in their life they were OK in light snow and the slush left after snowplows went through. The tread wear indicators still aren't showing. My only complaint, and it's really not issues with the vehicles I've mentioned, is a slight lack of responsiveness in the steering, something I attribute to the rather soft sidewalls. So I would not recommend them for a car which is intended for (cough, cough) spirited driving. For instance, I would not put them on my Infinity G37, even if they were available in the right sizes and speed ratings.

Keeping in mind the price-point of these tires, I have been very impressed with their performance to this point. I have about 2000 miles on them and have driven them in just about every weather condition. Wet/dry traction has been impressive and I quickly gained confidence in these tires in light snow. In heavier snowfall, I adjust my driving style to the conditions, but, have had no problems whatsoever with takeoffs or turns. Ride comfort and noise level are at least on par with the OE Eagle RS-As. As others have stated, treadwear will ultimately determine if this was a great buy.

Initial Review, 2,000 Miles on Tires

Bought these to go on my girlfriend's infiniti. Replace some old Goodyears. I'm one for spirited driving and these tires hold up well for that. dry grip is solid and it takes some pushing to get these tires to their limits in a big sedan. very stable overall, but there's a very slight hesitation when doing sudden course correction (did a quick homebrew autocross when the tires were new). Most people won't notice it but i'm used to driving an Mr2.
Wet grip is great for an all season and im constantly impressed by how stable it is and its resistance to sliding. You can get it to slide if you push too hard, but i can take the same turns comfortably at 80% speed wet vs dry. wet braking is a little less impressive, as it will engage the ABS quickly if you stab it too hard, but generally good braking performance in light and heavy rain.
Snow/ice performance is average for an all season, Light snow being significantly better than deep, but i've only needed to dig myself out once this winter, so from standstills/parking it gets you going just fine.
I drive with traction control off most of the time and i have to actually try to lose the rear end on anything other than ice. very predictable when a slide begins as well.
For the record, i live in Chicago, so i've seen wet, dry, snow and ice in the same week.
Rides a little harsh and drones a bit at 70mph, but those are acceptable trade-offs for a the perforamnce/price envelope this tire gives.
four/five stars.

I have 2500 miles on these tires, as this is my winter set up, went from Yokohama S4( great tire)to this as I have another set of rims and tires (20In with General G Maxx, noisy tires)so these would only be winter all season for me. they are VERY quiet, ride very nice and handle ok, the Yoko's were the better but these are ok. I also had Conti DWS Extreme that I did not like and took off the car! These tires are as good if not better than the DWS. The Hankook s really surprised me in this category. I don't think you will be disappointed. we have had 4 major snow storms, ice and frigid temps since I had these.....

New Dunlop Winter Maxx Tires Installed on My Car

Wednesday, February 26, 2014 by Gary Stanley

After three years of faithful service, my Michelin X-Ice Xi2 winter / snow tires have finally worn to the point where they needed to be replaced. While they were not bald, the tread depth had worn to about 4/32nds of an inch, which is more shallow than recommended for effective snow traction. Tires at low tread depths can only "nibble" into snow instead of biting through it to find grip. And with this brutal winter season still in full swing, I decided that it was time to be safe rather than sorry. Check out more information about how tread depth can affect snow traction by reading, "Do My Winter / Snow Tires Have Another Year in Them?

Dunlop has been producing studless winter tires for well over a decade beginning with the original Graspic DS-1. Subsequent generations of DS-2 and DS-3 models were well received and popular value-priced Studless Ice & Snow tires. These tires were known for their great deep snow and slush traction, but in general, fell a bit short in packed snow and ice traction compared to the competition from Bridgestone and Michelin. This gap in packed snow and ice traction seemed to be all but closed until Dunlop's introduction of the Winter Maxx.

The roads were still covered with snow on the day I installed the tires on my 2009 Infiniti G37x Coupe. With a good mix of packed snow and ice, as well as loose snow and fresh powder on some roads, I was able to put the Winter Maxx tires through their paces. I can say with confidence that the tires are at least as good as my old Michelin X-Ice Xi2 tires. If you're considering buying a great set of dedicated winter / snow tires for your vehicle at a great value, be sure to take a look at the Dunlop Winter Maxx

Hands down the best winter/snow tire you can purchase if your car can mount 17' wheels. I just traveled up the east coast during this past week's major snow storm that hit the south/mid-atlantic (2/13/14) and I never had a moment where the car felt out of control or that I could not traverse a patch of snow or ice. My experience is that of a car with AWD so that being the case these tires made it feel as though I was on a regular surface when trouncing through half a foot of powdery snow.

These tires can give a sense of over confidence though, because they're so good at stopping you and at getting traction specifically. This doesn't mean you're impervious to very deep snow or won't get your car stuck doing something stupid. What it means is that you're more capable of getting around in heavy snow with these tires then arguably any other set here on Tire Rack. Yes, they are that good.

The DW's noticably smoother & quieter with no noticable loss of cornering ability or control. Best of all the horrid tramlining this car is notorious for is completely gone! Have not driven in the rain yet, so can't comment on the wet handling. So far, 2 thumbs up - price was very reasonable too.

I bought these tires last year, and naturally, here in the Chicago area, it didn't snow at all!

But this year Chicago and north central rural Illinois has been a real testing ground for this tire. Having an all wheel drive vehicle certainly helps quite a bit, but these tires add a level of confidence that I've never experienced in any vehicle before. Extremely good traction on wet surfaces, in bitter sub-zero temperatures, both light and medium snow, as well as the large mounds that leave many vehicles plowed in the parking space on Chicago's side streets. I was amazed at just how well this tread compound handles icy conditions too.

Very good performance at highway speeds... smooth and quiet ride. I don't know how long the tread will last, but I use these tires only during the ice and snow seasons, so I expect to get a few more years out of them. Very highly recommended!

Installed these shortly after buying the car second-hand. It had Michelin Pilots that were a couple of years old- still had some life left but they were lame. I didn't realize HOW lame until I bought the Bridgestones!

My previous G37 Sedan had Hankooks and understeered pretty badly. So did this new one with the Michelins. I assumed it was the car.

Then I had the Bridgestones installed the day before a terrible ice storm hit Tulsa. I got to test their winter performance immediately and was quite impressed. It was a couple of days before I got to try them on a dry road with no sand. In a word- amazed.

Very impressed with these tires so far. Their performance in the wet and snow is pretty astounding since they aren't "winter" tires. But in the dry they work great also. I'd definitely recommend these.

Initial Review, 1,000 Miles on Tires
January 30, 2014

Thought it appropriate to write a review after managing through Snowmageddon in Atlanta on January 28, 2014. These tires are about 2 months old and replaced Yokohama Avid ENVigor's that were on the car when I bought it used about 15 months ago. To say these Primacy's are an upgrade over the Yokohama's is an understatement. The Yokohama's are VERY noisy, and had modest dry traction--especially cornering--and even worse wet traction, despite an aggressive tread pattern. The Michelin's are very quiet, comfortable sneakers for my G37S are even are more than admirable through spirited take-offs and cornering on wet and dry pavement here in the ATL. However, when challenged with our great snow/ice event this week, showed their vulnerabilities. Snow traction was fairly good (we only got 2"), but on the icy conditions beneath the snow, they were horrible. I managed to keep it out of ditches and off of bumpers and made it home unscathed, but without my northern, snow-driving capabilities (from PA), not sure I would have pulled it off (in a high-torque, rear-wheel drive, staggered fitment) without them! Love my Michelin's 363 days a year. But any more frozen stuff here in the ATL, and I'm not sure they would be the choice. So, if you are reading this from anywhere above the Mason-Dixon, you may want to think differently!

These tires are horrible even in slightly damp weather. Long sweeping turns in the rain are scary at this point, let alone sharper turns. The car does not hydroplane, rather it slips sideways on the turns. On top of that, this car has way too much power for these tires. Even on a straight road when accelerating from a moderate speed (from 40mph up to 50mph), the tires are easily spinning. Not sure if it is the car or the tires or both, but despite being properly aligned, the car seems to wander in the lane and catches grooves and ruts in the road easily. The only plus is that they seem to wear very evenly.

These definitely rank as some of the worst tires I've ever had on a vehicle with only one other exception in 20 years. They are OEM, and I can't wait to replace them SOON.

Initial Review, 2,000 Miles on Tires
November 12, 2012

After reading all the negative comments about excessive noise and terrible wet traction I was a bit aprehensive about these tires. Admittedly I have only 2,000 miles on the car but so far here are my observations:
Noise - They are no noisier than the Michelin's on the Infiniti M35x I traded in on the Optima. I do not find the road noise excessive in any way. The car is actually quieter than my wife's Infiniti EX35 riding on Michelin's. Thay may be more a function of the car than the tire but noise is not an issue.
Wet Traction - Had a mjor rainstorm yesterday and went out looking for puddles and standing water. Found plenty with no problems whatsoever. I cruised on the highway at 65-70 with no feeling of lack of control at all. Hit several large puddles at 45 mph on a back road with no evedence of hydroplaning at all.
Snow - Can't help you here. Haven't driven it in snow yet but I'd be surprised if they were as bad as several reviewers have stated.
Am I happy with the tires? So far - Yes. Would I buy them again - probably not as I really like Cooper Tires and I usually buy them as replacement when I need tires.
So any of you out there who have these tires on your car - don't fret. They should do just fine unless they are really terrible on snow, whcih I have not been able to evaluate yet.
