Tire Alternatives and Options for Your Dodge Journey

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 by Hunter Leffel
Been loving driving your 2009 Dodge Journey so much that it's time for tires? The Original Equipment 225/55R19 Kumho Solus KH16 is the only tire offered in that size. Lately, there has been very limited availabilty on that tire. Looking for some other options?

Let me suggest changing to size 235/55R19. This size is only .4" taller and .4" wider than the original tire. That equates to about the width of a pinky finger. This size will fit on the factory 19 inch wheels.

Here are a couple great options to take a look at.

Comments on Tire Alternatives and Options for Your Dodge Journey

Monday, August 8, 2011 by Karen Denton:
I was told no other tire would work. Is this true?
Tuesday, August 9, 2011 by Hunter:
Hi,
If you currently have the 225/55R19 you can easily use 235/55R19.

Thanks,
Hunter

Hunter,

What if we wanted to go with a 18" tire and wheel with same overall diamater? What tire size options could we use then? Is there an issue with wheel back spacing? Thank you.
Thursday, October 27, 2011 by hunter:
Hi Jason,
Thanks for your inquiry. The Journey can accept a 18 inch wheel and tire. I would be happy to discuss those options in detail with you. Just give me a call at 1-800-429-8355 ext 744
Thursday, November 3, 2011 by Louis:
Hi Hunter,
The number you listed can not be used from my calling area.( Canada) Is there an 18" alternative for the Dodge Journey 225/55R19?
Thanks in Advance!
Thursday, November 3, 2011 by Hunter:
Hi,
A 225/60R18 will work. Of course you have to buy new wheels as well. you can call 574-287-2345 if the 800 number fails you. again my extension is 744.
Thanks!

My boyfriend only needs one new tire... Can he run three 225's and one 235 without any problem?
Thursday, November 10, 2011 by Jeff Klaybor:
What is the original tire for a Dodge Journey SXT? It has TMPS
Saturday, November 12, 2011 by Hunter:
Faith,
I would not advise mixing sizes on that vehicle.

Thanks,
Hunter
Saturday, November 12, 2011 by Hunter:
Jeff,
We show the 2009 SXT has 225/65R17. Of course it always best to look at the tires you have on the vehicle to verify.

Thanks!

If I change my Journey's tire suize from 225/55r19 to 235/55r19, will my snow chain I bought for the old size fits the new size?

Will 245/50-19 tires also work? Thanks

Can I get a 19 inch tire with more tread for my journey cause its horrible in the snow or do I need to switch rims size for a bigger tread tire thanks

HI,THe alternate size we recommend is 235/55R19.

Thanks,
Hunter
Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by Jim:
Does the changing of the tire size matter if I have an AWD vehicle? I'm not sure if that will affect the calibrating of that systems. Comments?
Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi,
With the alternate suggested size being .4" taller, there will be a 1.5% difference in distance traveled with each rotation. The industry guideline is anything within 3% is acceptable.
Thursday, March 1, 2012 by Bill:
Great. That sounds technical to me, but sounds like I should be ok with the AWD system and the 235 55 R19 tires.

Thanks!

I have a 2009 Dodge Journey AWD with 19" options. I now need new tires and original tire size not available. My mechanic suggested I switch to 16" tires and rims. Can I do this without causing problems to my vehicule?
Tuesday, April 3, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi,
your vehicle can run a 16" setup. If you want to give me call I wil be happy to discuss options we have to offer you. I can be reached at 800 428 8355 ext 744.
Thanks,
Hunter

My 09 Journey SXT AWD has Kumho 225/55R19 tires on them but when I search your site for tires sizes based on my vehicle info I get results for 225/65-17. I'm not sure what size I should be purchasing. Any help??
Thursday, April 5, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi,
You would need to purchase a 19" tire, be that the 225/55R19 or the alternate 235 suggested in the blog. A 17 inch tire will not fit on your wheels.
Thanks,
Hunter
Monday, April 9, 2012 by Dave:
What affect will going from 225 to 235 have on the speedometer.
Monday, April 9, 2012 by Hunter:
The change in size will result in about a 1.5% error in the speedometer. Since the 225 is shorter, the 235 will be clocking a little bit slow.
Monday, April 23, 2012 by Phil:
Will 255-50-19 tires work on an 09 Journey, or are they too wide?
Monday, April 23, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Phil,
Those are wider than I am comfortable recommending without any rub.

Thanks,
Hunter

Need to replace all 4 tires on Dodge Journey R/T 2010 AWD , 27,000 miles steel coming through. I want to replace my 225/55R/19 tires that are hard to replace, costing well over $1,000 plus dollars. Will 235/55/R19 work and that is what most comments and reviews have suggested on replacing Dodge Journey tires.
Tuesday, May 22, 2012 by Hunter:
235/55R19 is absolutely the alternate size we recommend
Monday, June 4, 2012 by george:
I need to replace my 2010 Dodge Journey tires. Currently have p225/65R17 on the vehicle. Would p255/65R17 be to wide? Please recommend the various sizes that would work.

Thanks, George
Monday, June 4, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi George,
The widest size we recommend is 245/60R17 for the Journey in a 17 inch.

Thanks,
Hunter

I have a 2009 dodge journey. i went up on the alternate tire size and now my speed sensors come on and grab the front brakes when going into a curb. How do i fix this problem? New sensors have been installed but same problem
Thursday, June 7, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Jeremy,
A couple things, first would be verify running size 235/55R19 all around. That is to say all 4 tires are the same size. If all 4 are the same and is a size within the 3% rule, you may need some diagnosis at a dealer.
Friday, June 8, 2012 by Shannon:
I don't know what the numbers mean but could I use p235/75r15 on my 2010 journey sxt fwd?
Sunday, June 17, 2012 by Caleb:
Is it possible to use 245 55 R19 Pirelli tires on an 09 dodge journey Sxt FWD ?
Tuesday, June 19, 2012 by Hunter:
Shannon,
You would need 15" wheels to even think about 235/75R15. We show the SXT comes with 17" wheels.
If you are open to buying new wheels, our info indicates a 15" is too small to clear the brake hardware. You could downsize to 16" if you wanted, again would require purchasing wheels in addition to the tires.
Thanks,
Hunter
Tuesday, June 19, 2012 by Hunter:
Caleb,
The 245/55R19 willbe about an inch taller overall. I am not able to guarantee fitment with that much of a diameter increase. If you want more sidewall, then buying 18" wheels would be a better approach. If you want to close the wheel well gap, then lowering the vehicle is the best approach to that.

Thanks,
Hunter

Hi Hunter,
Does 235/55R19 fit my Journey SE 2012?
Thursday, June 21, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi,
It appears same fitment on the 2012, so yes, those will work.
Thanks
Hunter
Friday, June 22, 2012 by jeremy:
Ok. I went with all 4 new tires along with alignment. Went to the recommended 235/55/19. Great tires. however, when going around a left hand turn, sharp turn, the front passenger brakes grab and the traction control kicks on and causes the car to slow as if i am sliding. However, its not spinning or sliding. Took it to local Dodge dealership and had both front speed sensors changed to be sure. Did not help at all. So it was hooked to the computer(obd) system and checked for codes 3 different times. Nothing was found. Then it had alignment checked again. Perfect. Still front brakes grab on passenger side in curve. We are lost. After being to dealerships, local Napa mechanics, service, and new sensors......and $600 in unnecessary repairs we are at step 1 all over again. Everyone is puzzled! Any ideas????
Monday, June 25, 2012 by Hunter:
I tried to find your order by your email to document your issues, but was not able to locate. In any event, we have seen in some rare situations similar type issues with new tires. It is possible it works itself out after some break-in. You may want to contact the dealer you bought from for further help.

I have a Journey 2010. The tire size when I purchased it is 225/55R19. Is there another size I can use with this car? I saw online that I could use 235/50R19. Will this work?
Tuesday, June 26, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Kim,
We recommend 235/55R19. A 225/50R19 will be almost an inch shorter and we would not recommend that much of a drop in size.

Thanks,
Hunter

I just bought the Yokahma 235/55/19 from tire rack . No Problem what so ever putting them on 2011 Journey RT. Much better than those crappy KUMHO ones.

Saturday, July 21, 2012 by Paula:
Hi I have a 2009 dodge Journey am almost ready for my 2nd set of tires as tread wears fast was wondering if I could move down to a smaller rim and larger tires and if so what wold you recommend? I just spent over a grand last August and they already need replacing so didn't even last me a year. Any information would be helpful like if I would need to add a lift kit or make any other changes and what roughly it would all cost. Thanks so much Paula
Monday, July 23, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Keeta, You can switch to 17 inch tires, but it would require buying wheels as well.

Hunter
Monday, July 23, 2012 by Hunter:
Paula,
You can downsize your vehicle. The best way to view downsize wheel options and tire sizes is to shop by vehicle for winter product.

Jessica,
I am sorry but we do not have 22" recommended sizes for the Journey.

Friday, October 19, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Minda,
A 255 is a bit wider than comfortable recommending. It could rub. The recommended alternate size is 235/55R19.

Thanks
Sunday, October 21, 2012 by Ursula:
I see that a couple of postings are asking about a winter tire and you have not answered their question. Living in Alberta and driving the highway in winter, what does a person with a 2012 Journey (19" tires) do to switch to a winter tire-- as a winter tire does not ome in 19"??? Please respond. Thanks!
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 by Hunter:
Ursula,
Thanks for your question. There are multiple winter tire options in the alternate 19" size, 235/55/R19.
We also have wheel and tire packages available in wheels sizes down to 16"

Take good care,
Hunter

Had a blowout on front driver side tonight! Would we be ok to but the 235/55/R19 on front and leave the backs at the 255?
Thursday, October 25, 2012 by Stephen:
Own a 2012 journey crew (v6 model similar to r/t) 19 inch rims. found a great deal on used winter tires and rims from a guy who had a 2010 journey r/t. They are 16 inch rims. Just tried to install it and it won't clear the caliper on the front. Tire rack andvertises that you can fit 16 inch on 2012 journey r/t and crew. I think this is in error and i hope no one buys any 16's for that application. I wanted to purchase 17 inch wheels and tires but you have no steel rims! What gives? Ps i have till end of november to find a solution as its law to have winter tires in quebec
Friday, October 26, 2012 by Hunter:
Whitney,
I wouldn't recommend mixing the sizes. They are different diameters, which could possibly lead to some issues with abs and traction control when mixed. If you have an all wheel drive it could damage the drive train as well. Again this is only in the case of mixing the sizes
Friday, October 26, 2012 by Hunter:
Stephen,
It is possible that one 16" hits and another fits perfectly due to variations in design and specifications other than just diameter. The 16 inch wheels we sell are guaranteed to fit on an unmodified vehicle

Will a 225/45R19 work for my 2009 dodge Journey? or a 225/75R19. My original size is 225/55R19
Saturday, October 27, 2012 by Hunter:
Marilyn,
235/55R19 is the only alternate size we recommend.

Winters Fast approaching and I'm looking for winter tires. I currently have the AWD R/T with 19" rims. My question is I have a set of 15" in my shed that I'm thinking of putting winters on to try and save money on the rims. They are the right bolt pattern but am unsure of tire size i would need, or if the rims will even work.
Thanks, Wil
Monday, November 5, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi,
We do not show that 15" wheels will fit on the Journey.
Monday, November 12, 2012 by Claire:
Just traded in my 2011 Journey R/T for a 2012, everything the same. But my brand new winter tires from the 2011 will not fit on the 2012. The dealership had no idea the 2011 winter tires(size P225/70R16) were not going to fit, and have said there "looking for a compatible size" for the 2012. Right now they don't know what size to use. What are you recommending for the 2012 Journey R/T winter tire size?
Friday, November 23, 2012 by Alejandro Garcia:
I need to change a couple tires in my Journey'09; I would like to know, if I can to place two tires 225/55/r19 and two tires 235/55/19. Thanks

I currently have 17" tires on my 2011 dodge journey. Looking to put 19" tires on. Will this work?
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 by Hunter:
Alejandro,
I would not recommend mixing tire sizes.

Thanks.
Wednesday, November 28, 2012 by Hunter:
Alisha,
Sure you can put 19" on the Journey. Just go to Tirerack.com and enter your vehicle then click on wheels. There will be 19" options shown that are guaranteed to fit.

Thanks.

My wife's 2012 Journey has 225/55/r19, what size tires and rims could I go to in 18" or 17".
Monday, December 3, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Doug,
At this time we are not recommending down sizing on the 2012. The brake caliper and rotor is larger than previous years.

can i use a 245 55 19 on my journey

Hi Candy,
The easiest wayto go about this is shopping by vehicle at tirerack.com. After you enter the vehicle info click on winter. This will walk you through the various options in smaller diameter wheel sizes

Thursday, December 27, 2012 by Hunter:
Hi Rommel,
You can use a 235/65R17 or 245/60R17 on that.

Hi
I have a 2010 Dodge Journey sxt with 225/55/R19 on it now. Can I switch to 17" rims and tires?
Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Sherry,
The 2010 Journey can run 17: wheels and tires. You can view these on the website by entering your vehicle then clicking on Winter. This is the only way to see minus sized wheels at the current time.

Can you fit 22" wheels on a 09 dodge journey SE? If so what is the best tire option? I've seen pictures off people with 22s and a 265/35/22 tire but when I try to do wheel/tire packages from various places they recommend 255/30/22. Which is better? Would like to have the thickist possible with no rubbing if 22s are an option. Thanks
Tuesday, January 29, 2013 by Hunter:
Our fitment guide stops at 20: on that vehicle.
Thursday, January 31, 2013 by Kevin :
I have been told by a garage that if I change the tire size from 225/55/19 to 235/55/19 the vehicle may not read the correct mph? Is this in fact true? Thanks Kevin
Friday, February 1, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Kevin,
Witht he alternate being .4" taller it will introduce an error. In this case it will be about 1.4%. So when travelling 100 miles an hour your speedometer will read 101.4. The industry views errors under 3% as accepteable
Saturday, February 9, 2013 by LAKESHA:
Hi,

I bought a used Dodge Journey that has 245/55/19 tires. The vehicle needed an alignment which caused some wear on the inside of my tires. The vehicle seems to ride pretty good with this size and they are cheaper than the original sizes. What do you recommend? What is the difference between the 235/55/19 and a 245/55/19?
Monday, February 11, 2013 by Hunter:
Lakesha,
The 245 will be 1/2" wider and taller than the 235 we recommend. While it is larger than we are comfortable with, if it fits, you should be OK.
Wednesday, February 20, 2013 by Ms Smith:
I have a 2009 Journey SXT AWD, wanted to get a chrome rim/tire package, size they stated was 265/35/22, will this cause rubbing? Is this a good fit for an alternative in size? Don't wont to purchase if it won't fit.
Friday, February 22, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Ms. Smith,
When you shop by vehicle, for the most part we will show you items that will fit without rubbing. If there is a fitment issue, it will be shown int he important notes section of each wheel and tire.

Can i put 24 inc wheels with p225zeronero perreli tires on my 09 journey?
Thursday, February 28, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Brenda,
24" wheels are larger than we are comfortable recommending for your vehicle.
Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by Brian:
I need two tires, however can only afford one at a time, ist that ok for a short period of time?
Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Brian,
We do not recommend replacing tires in less than sets of 4. it can cause handling imbalances in some situations
Saturday, April 6, 2013 by Natasha:
I need tires bad & was looking 2 get rims 4 a better price. I have a '11 Dodge Journey Crew AWD, will a 265 35Z R22 102W fit without rubbing? It's a universal 6 lug but my 5 lug can be converted 2 the 6 with an adapter that's included.

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Natasha,
I am sorry but we do not offer 22" options for the Journey. as such I will notbe able to confirm fitment in that size.
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 by Hunter:
Donna,
I am sorry but we do nmonitor space under vehicles for mounting spares. I would try the Dodge dealer for guidance on that.

Thursday, April 18, 2013 by Hunter:
Hi Roger,
Looks like we recommend 245/55R18.
Monday, May 20, 2013 by Ryan :
The 19" 225 Kumho tire are the worst I've ever owned. My 3 other vehicles combined have less tire trouble than the Journey, which is used the least. Good van/car with terrible and expensive tires
