Looking for the Best Autocross Tires?

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 by Zig Ziegler

Choosing the best tire is one of the most important factors of a successful autocross season. Racers spend lots of time and energy in extracting every ounce of horsepower and torque from their engine, and sometimes forget that all of this power is useless unless it can be effectively transferred to the track. There are four small patches of rubber that play the most important role in determining your vehicle's level of performance.

There are two distinct groups of autocross tires. The first group is made up of dedicated track tires that are DOT approved, but are never intended for street use. Drivers using these tires want maximum dry grip and will have separate wheels to install at the track. I believe the best tires in the Dry Racetrack & Autocross Only category are the Hoosier A6, Hankook Ventus Z214 and Kumho Ecsta V710.

The second group of tires is for the autocrosser who's willing to sacrifice some dry grip in order to have a tire they can drive to and from the track. In the Extreme Performance Summer category I like the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11, Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec and Hankook Ventus R-S3.

I think these tires are the best choices in each group because of their dry traction and steering response are some the highest rated by customers who have used the tires. Unlike shopping for any other tire, these are the two most important attributes to an autocross tire. Anything else like ride comfort or road noise is ancillary to your autocross needs.

Whether you're looking for Hoosier tires for sale, Hankook reviews or to buy Dunlop tires, our website offers you everything you need to have the best autocross season!

New 18" Lightweight Rear Wheels for the C6 Z06

Friday, August 5, 2011 by Cy Chowattukunnel
With summer timOZ Allegerita Anthracitee here, it's time to get your Corvette out and go! Of all the cool sport cars that we get to work with, the Corvette is among my favorites because so many Corvette drivers drive their cars daily. What's the point of having a great car if you're not going to drive it?

For C6 Z06 drivers that drive on the street and the track, rear 18" lightweight wheel availability has been limited until now. O.Z. Racing has introduced an 18x12 57mm offset Alleggerita HLT that's ideal for track use.

The anthracite painted (pictured above) and black painted finishes are currently available, while other painted finishes can be special ordered for delivery in approximately 60 days include blue, gold, orange, red and white.

Since the C6 Z06 typically comes with 18" front and 19" rear Original Equipment sizes, it's not possible to display the 18" wheels on our Upgrade Garage, so contact a sales specialist for assistance.

Combined with the 18x10 40mm offset front size ($399* Anthracite, $414* Black and $429* other finishes) you can run the following custom fit track fitments of 345/35-18 Hoosier R6 or A6 in the rear and either 295/30-18 or 315/30-18 in the front.  These custom fit track fitments are aggressive fitments where the edge of the tire will be further out towards the fender. Suspension modification may be required to clear the fender lips.

This 18" combination weighs 3.8 lbs. less per rear wheel compared to the 345/30-19 Hoosier R6 on 19x12" O.Z. Racing Ultraleggera HLTs. 3.8 lbs. Less rotational weight will significantly improve braking and accelerating at the track. Read "Road Wheel Weights Can Affect Your Vehicle's Show...and Go" to see how lighter wheels can affect a vehicle's ability to accelerate, brake and corner.

Keep in mind that the above tire sizes are custom fit options, so whether or not you rub depends on a number of factors:

1) Suspension modifications and/or suspension wear
2) Alignment, specifically camber setting
2) Road conditions
3) Tire tread width
4) Amount of load the vehicle is carrying
A custom fit is a size or part that you can test fit but not drive on. I would also recommend getting anecdotal feedback from other drivers with the same vehicle before making your purchase.

Looking for Your Next Set of R Compound Track Tires?

Wednesday, July 21, 2010 by Chad Hocker
Hoosier Racing TiresTire Rack is a Hoosier Tire Dealer offering the Hoosier R6 in over 50 sizes from 13-inch up to 19-inch.  The Hoosier R6 comes with 4.5/32 tread depth, so no tire shaving is needed. A quick heat cycle by Tire Rack would benefit the R6. Heat cycling can be added at time of check out at $15 each.

Take a look at some of the recent user reviews on the R6.

"I've used these on my Porsche 968 race car in PRC racing and open track days for years, and have always loved them. They hook-up very well, the steering response is nice, and the tire is very predictable. The optimum tire pressures are easy to figure out, and I've found they work well after a lap or two warm up all the way to the end. Overall, a real nice reliable track tire with good stick." -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, Porsche 968, CA

A good reminder on mounting these tires. They need at least 36-48 hours to cure once mounted on your track wheels. If you order just tires make sure you allow for enough time to let the tire cure on the wheel after installation.

US Made DOT Competition Tires from Hoosier Tire

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 by Chad Hocker
Hoosier Racing TireTire Rack is a Hoosier Tire Dealer offering the popular Hoosier A6 and Hoosier R6. We can even get the Hoosier Wet tires for the diehard enthusiast that will race rain or shine.

Think back to the stories told from the early days of racing when you drove the family coupe or sedan to the track, changed the oil, checked the tire pressure and pulled the spare tire out and you were ready to race. Things are so different now in the premier racing series. However many of us still live out that dream through autocross competition and track events on the weekend. Even at Tire Rack when I work my summer Saturdays I pull into work to see our parking lot and test track become one of the venues for club track events -- typically in a much safer environment than days gone by 50 years ago.

Hoosier Tires for Sale: The Consumer's Perspective

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 by Tire Rack Team

Hoosier Racing performs a considerable amount of tests on their tires. And before we put Hoosier tires for sale, we test them, too. But while our opinions count, it sometimes helps to know what consumers like you are thinking. That's why we post Tire Rack Consumer Reviews.

A6 (Dry Racetrack & Autocross Only): "First two-day event showed how well these tires work! Went from fourth in class to first in class by over 1 second. These tires handle great and inspire complete confidence."  -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, BMW 328is, NM

R6 (Dry Racetrack & Autocross Only): "Incredible tire when it comes to grip, cornering and traction. Took to Willow Springs and the nearest competitor was over 3 seconds behind and second group over 7 seconds behind. These tires will make you feel super confident!" -- Tire Rack Consumer Review, Porsche 911, CA

Radial Wet (Wet Racetrack & Autocross Only): "Insanely capable tire in the wet. Instills enormous confidence, even when conditions are really bad. Remarkably fast. Everyone who drives on DOTs should have a set of these." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, Porsche 944, NJ
