Improve Your Driving Visibility with PIAA and Hella Bulbs

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by Steve Huffman

Winter is just around the corner and that means shorter days and longer nights. Many of us will be driving back and forth to work in the dark. The only thing between you and the unknown in front of your vehicle are your headlamps. So don't be the person who neglects them and drives down the road with only one working bulb. If your bulbs need replaced, replace them. Better yet, upgrade your lights so you can enjoy improved visibility during your night drives. High-performance bulbs will help you see clearer, improve your vision distance and get the attention of oncoming traffic.

With safety at the forefront, your headlamps, sidemarkers, fog lamps, turn signals and tail lamps are all critical in nighttime navigation. Tire Rack proudly offers PIAA and Hella bulbs to improve night and inclement weather driving.

Driving Light Upgrades: A Difference You Can See

Tuesday, August 9, 2011 by Alex Mouroulis
Have you ever felt your headlights were not up to the task they once were? Incandescent lights tend to get dimmer as they age. Some of the following bulb options from PIAA and Hella will be able to improve the lighting capabilities of your vehicle:

PIAA 9005 Intense White Bulbs
PIAA 9005 Intense
White Bulbs
PIAA H4 Super Plasma GT-X
PIAA H4 Super Plasma
GT-X
PIAA Plasma Ion Yellow H3 55W
PIAA Plasma Ion Yellow H3 55W

The PIAA 9005 Intense White Bulbs produce a radiant white beam without a hint of blue. With improved performance and longer life, these bulbs increase output and burn at a much cooler temperature. The H4 Super Plasma GT-X creates light output that is greater than the bulb's rated power consumption and is street-legal in Canada and all 50 U.S. states. While the Plasma Ion Yellow are a great way to improve visibility in inclement weather including extreme fog.

Another great option is the Hella 500 series driving lights, which I have equipped on my Volvo. I use the 500's adjusted slightly higher and wider than my low beams. They are excellent at helping me see objects as I drive down the rural roads of Indiana and Michigan.

Benefits of Aftermarket Lights

Lighting 101 Tech ArticleUnfortunately, our need to see doesn’t end when the sun goes down.  With the risk of having an accident about twice as high at night as during the day, lights can play an important factor to your vehicle’s safety.

Even though the lights of modern vehicles are typically sufficient to fulfill legal requirements, they can be added to or improved with an aftermarket lighting system. Many of today’s aftermarket lights are small and emit a very bright and accurate light.

Tire Rack offers a wide variety of PIAA bulbs and Hella bulbs to help improve the lighting system of your vehicle.

Did you know we carry replacement bulbs?

If you enter your vehicle’s year, make and model in our Upgrade Garage, we may have the means to illuminate your future, or at least a couple dozen feet in front of you.

I have used a couple bulbs in the past.PIAA The PIAA Xtreme White Plus is by far my favorite, and the best bulb we carry.  Not only did my visibility increase, but I also got a few good comments from my friends on how clean they looked without making my car look like I had tinted or cheezy-looking aftermarket lighting.

The other bulb that I used is the Hella HB3/9005 High Performance bulb. HellaIt works well as a standard replacement bulb and lasts a long time. I got a couple of years of use out of my Hellas.

Depending on your vehicle, both of these manufacturers have headlight bulbs, tail light bulbs, accessory bulbs and even full lighting kits. It's vehicle dependent, but PIAA also offers different tinted bulbs.

How much do you know about the reflectors in your headlights?

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
When you think about aftermarket lighting, you think bulb. And while it seems to be that simple, replacement bulbs are actually fairly complicated. One thing often overlooked: the reflector, which directs any light emitted by the bulb through the lens. But, as with most aftermarket components, there are a variety of different reflectors out there. Take a look:

This is a parabolic reflector. It's highly reflective and can be found in a variety of head light bulbs on the market. They are, you might say, the original reflector. Light rays are projected in a parallel line to each other, which helps to create a very tight beam of light. And that means these reflectors aren't typically used when low-beam light patterns are required.

DE light technology reflectors mirror what common slide projectors do with light. The light beam is reflected to a focusing lens that projects it onto the road. Hella is responsible for this innovative approach to replacement bulbs. Unlike the parabolic reflector, they're great for low-beam and fog lamp use.

The last type of reflector uses FF (free-form/free-surface) light technology. High-performance computers optimize the position of the reflector surface in relation to the bulb's position, which produces a higher light output. The entire surface of the reflector is used, in combination with a pattern-free lens, to produce a light beam.

At Tire Rack, we offer a number of replacement bulbs in each of the three categories. To find one for your vehicle, simply search our inventory according to your vehicle.

Can't see? Might need to replace headlights.

Monday, April 12, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
It's unfortunate that head light bulbs can't last forever, Nothing seems to be more annoying than a bulb that burned out. It weakens your view, and has this weird way of making you feel silly as you drive.

Make sure the front end of your car is always in perfect condition with a set of aftermarket lights that at least diminish the frequency at which you'll need to replace headlights. Tire Rack offers Hella lighting and PIAA lighting products, both of which do just that.

Search by vehicle for a list of replacement lighting products, or click here to see a complete list of head light bulbs.

Did you put aftermarket bulbs on your Ford F150?

Friday, February 5, 2010 by Tire Rack Team

The kit includes two tail lights, a cab-mounted stop lamp and a complete set of installation instructions—and installation, of course, is really easy.

In addition, you can add to the kit above with a Grille Kit featuring Halogen or Xenon driving lamps. You can also choose a Blackout Head Lamp Kit.

Is there xenon in your replacement bulbs?

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 by Tire Rack Team
It doesn't take much to switch out a head light bulb, but it takes a lot of science to actually create one. Inside those little replacement bulbs is, among other components, one key element: Halogen.

Halogen bulbs are quite common in today's vehicles. Halogen and other gasses combine to create a constant light output throughout the life of the bulb. It's the Tungsten wire within that creates the need for replacement bulbs. Despite the chemical process initiated by the halogen, the wire burns up and the bulb goes out.

And that's why a variety of replacement bulbs are filled with xenon instead. Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) light bulbs replace the halogen with xenon and the wire with a ballast, ultimately generating a whiter light source. It is, quite possibly, the most advanced replacement bulbs you can find. (Read more.)

Tire Rack carries a number of xenon-filled replacement bulbs from brands like Hella and PIAA. Search by vehicle to determine what fits.
