Greeting from Gill's Garage

Thanks for taking the time to browse this blog.  Hopefully, this will be a great place to obtain information on wheels, tires, suspension and other things automotive.

Let me introduce myself.  My name is Gill and I have over 7 years of sales and testing experience with Tirerack.com.  I am a proud participant in all of our on road and track product testing (hey, someone has to do it, right?)

Being able to experience all of the products we sell, often times in side by side comparisons, enables me to hand pick products for your vehicle that will best meet your needs. In addition, I have purchased many of our products and used them on my own vehicles over the years.

Sometimes the stories I come across in the automotive industry are as interseting or informative as the products that we carry. As things come up regarding brakes, tires, wheels, suspension, etc., I'll drop in and share.

Thanks for stopping by!

Gill

The Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 RFT

Friday, November 19, 2010 by Gill Gilmer
Blizzak LM-25 RFTHeadlining the Performance Winter / Snow category for Bridgestone is their Blizzak LM-25 RFT. It is a great tire in providing grip in both deep snow and icy conditions while also offering the abilty to complete the journey in the event of any air loss.

The Lamellen "edge effect" compound (multiple biting edges in the tread blocks to help grip snow and ice) gives you, the driver, better adhesion. This tire is not for all drivers. It was developed with only certain BMW and Mazda vehicles in mind.

After having tested the Blizzak LM-25 RFT myself, I would feel very comfortable recommending it for any of the vehicles it is intended for.

Continental ExtremeWinterContact

Friday, October 29, 2010 by Gill Gilmer
Continental ExtremeWinterContactThe flagship winter tire for Continental is their ExtremeWinterContact. It is a fantastic tire that provides grip in both deep snow and icy conditions.

Its high-density sipes allow this tire to bite very well in deep snow conditions while keeping contact with the road's surface. This gives you, the driver, better grip.

After having tested this tire versus its main competition (Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 and Michelin X-Ice Xi2) I consider this to be a very competitive option.

Bridgestone Blizzak WS70

Bridgestone Blizzak WS70The flagship winter tire for Bridgestone is their Blizzak WS70. It is an unbelievable tire in providing grip in both deep snow and icy conditions.

The tube multicell compound allows this tire to temporarily absorb microscopic amounts of water that keep normal tires from making good contact with the road's surface. This gives you, the driver, better grip.

Improving upon the Blizzak WS60, the WS70 has more tread depth for better bite in deep snow conditions. After having tested this tires versus its main competition (Continental ExtremeWinterContact and Michelin X-Ice Xi2) I wouldn't trade the Blizzak WS70 for either.

Heat Cycling. What does it do?

Friday, May 7, 2010 by Gill Gilmer

Planning a trip to the track, drivers school or local autocross? Do you have everything?

  • Track brake pads? Check.
  • Adjustable shocks? Check.
  • Perfomance summer tires? Check.
  • Lightweight aftermarket wheels? Check.
  • Winning attitude? Check!

What about heat cycling of your tires? Have you considered the benefits?

Tire Rack's heat cycling of Track & Competition DOT tires is a non-destructive service that brings the tire up to race-track operating temperatures (minimum of 170- to 180-degrees Fahrenheit). Heat cycling is accomplished by placing a mounted and inflated tire on a machine that does NOT scuff in the tire or cause tread wear. Our mechanical heat cycling service will not remove mold flashing or even the tread stripes/or printed codes often used to identify the extruded tread slabs before they are assembled in the tire manufacturing plant.

Avon, Hoosier, Kumho and Yokohama all recommend that their competition tires be heat cycled before being run in competition. Tire Rack is currently able to heat cycle tires in our South Bend, IN and Sparks, NV locations for quick shipping times to you.
