The Lamellen "edge effect" compound (multiple biting edges in the tread blocks to help grip snow and ice) gives you, the driver, better adhesion. This tire is not for all drivers. It was developed with only certain BMW and Mazda vehicles in mind.
After having tested the
Blizzak LM-25 RFT myself, I would feel very comfortable recommending it for any of the vehicles it is intended for.
The flagship winter tire for Continental is their
ExtremeWinterContact. It is a fantastic tire that provides grip in both deep snow and icy conditions.
Its high-density sipes allow this tire to bite very well in deep snow conditions while keeping contact with the road's surface. This gives you, the driver, better grip.
After having tested this tire versus its main competition (
Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 and
Michelin X-Ice Xi2) I consider this to be a very competitive option.
The flagship winter tire for Bridgestone is their
Blizzak WS70. It is an unbelievable tire in providing grip in both deep snow and icy conditions.
The tube multicell compound allows this tire to temporarily absorb microscopic amounts of water that keep normal tires from making good contact with the road's surface. This gives you, the driver, better grip.
Improving upon the Blizzak WS60, the WS70 has more tread depth for better bite in deep snow conditions. After having tested this tires versus its main competition (
Continental ExtremeWinterContact and
Michelin X-Ice Xi2) I wouldn't trade the Blizzak WS70 for either.

Tire Rack's heat cycling of Track & Competition D.O.T. tires is a non-destructive service that brings the tire up to race-track operating temperatures (minimum of 170- to 180-degrees Fahrenheit). Heat cycling is accomplished by placing a mounted and inflated tire on a machine that does NOT scuff in the tire or cause tread wear. Our mechanical heat cycling service will not remove mold flashing or even the tread stripes/or printed codes often used to identify the extruded tread slabs before they are assembled in the tire manufacturing plant.
Avon,

Kumho and
