Initial Review, 50,000 Miles on Tires

These tires have been outstanding in all conditions. Snow traction has been phenomenal especially after one of the worst winters in 10 years. Wet traction very good. Tires were quiet but have gotten louder lately due to some uneven wear. Regardless of the other reviewers ill-guided opinions, I don't blame this on the tires, it was due to my car's alignment.

Don't let the fact that some drivers don't care for their cars and/or strike fixed objects reflect poorly on the tires they purchased.

I am purchasing a set for the wife's new Focus and I will be getting a new set for my car before the winter.

Initial Review, 1,000 Miles on Tires
April 18, 2014

I normally only buy Michelin or Yokohama tires, but I went out on a limb with these Bridgestones and I'm glad I did.

These tires are one of the best I've ever owned. They have excellent dry and wet traction as well as fantastic cornering and steering response. Driving a powerful rear wheel drive sedan, I can't break the tires loose when it's dry. Even when it's wet, they still grab the road.

I couldn't believe how well these tires corner. Taking an on ramp at 90mph and I felt nothing but in control. Highly recommended for spirited drivers.

They ride nice and the noise levels are above average. They are not as quiet as a lot of my other tires I've owned, but I'll take a little noise to have a secure feeling.

I can't speak for tread life since I've only done a little over 1,000 miles.

These are my summer tires only, so I can't comment on snow/ice traction.

Bottom line; if you're looking for a grippy tire with great handling, these are for you!

I can't believe the difference these tires have made in not only noise and ride but handling and steering response. The difference between these and the BF Goodrich tires they replaced is night and day. I used to dread driving on the old tires but now I look forward to experiencing these new ones! We can actually have a conversation in the car.

After 2 weeks of driving and one autocross, my reservations about this tire have receded. I read the reviews and felt comfortable enough to purchase them, mainly because they were the only tires that worked for autoX that were in my size. My concern stemmed from most reviews were on light cars and Mustang is much heavier. After an my last autocross, I am very happy with them. The weather changed from sunny and warm to cloudy and overcast and I felt very little change in the grip and feel of the tire. The OEM Pirellis were much more sensitive to weather changes and did not provide the same grip. Needless to say I am very happy with my choice.

I spent about six months researching tires, finally chose the Destination LE2's, and they've been a great choice for the price. They're quiet and responsive on dry, wet, and mildly snowy roads. I didn't have to deal with any deep snow last winter but I don't have any reason to believe they'd be a problem. I haven't experienced any significant change in fuel milage. They handle well with an empty bed or with a cord of firewood, in the city or on the highway. Finding good road tires for a Ranger can be a challenge depending on how you use your truck, but I think most owners would be as pleased with these as I am.

Initial Review, 20,000 Miles on Tires
April 20, 2014

I purchased these tires used from a friend who is a very reputable auto mechanic. I didn't know whether they would be very good to run in the winter as the tread was down to only about 25%. However after going through one of the worst winters here in Wisconsin. I was very surprised how well they performed. I would have preferred more tread but they pulled me through all the deep snow and ice covered roads with no problem at all. I am running into a bit of a problem when running in rutted roads during a rain storm. They want to hydroplane some but there almost down to the wear bars so I mostly attribute it to that. I would certainly highly recommend buying a set of these tires. I suspect I should be able to run them a while longer however am looking at buying a new set. The price for a new set really is fairly affordable compared to other tire brands. Before this set I ran a set of Uniroyal Laredo tires which didn't even make it past 35,000 before they needed to be replaced. With the Bf Goodrich tires I haven't run into any problems with irregular wear due to alignment issues which I struggled with on my last set. Overall I am pleased to say that by picking this tire you will make a good choice for your hard earned dollar. For a more aggressive tire you will be pleased with how quiet they are while running down the road.

Goodyear's Top-Rated Wrangler DuraTrac

Thursday, May 22, 2014 by Neal O'Neal

Goodyear has really hit the nail on the head with their On-/Off-Road Commercial Traction Wrangler DuraTrac. It's specifically designed for drivers of multi-purpose full-sized pickups, vans, sport utility and commercial vehicles looking for tires that work both on- and off-road. The Wrangler DuraTrac is developed to be a versatile tire that provides off-road competence in dirt, gravel and mud with on-road composure in dry, wet and wintry conditions.

Wrangler DuraTrac tires feature a rugged chip-resistant tread compound that also guards against chunking and tearing, especially under heavy loads associated with towing. Its symmetric tread design combines large shoulders and highly angled center tread blocks to enhance stability and traction in dry and wet conditions. Self-cleaning, stepped shoulder blocks, zig-zag sipes and Goodyear's TractiveGroove Technology at the base of the circumferential grooves provide thousands of biting edges to improve traction in deep mud and snow. Branded with the mountain/snowflake symbol, it meets industry severe snow service standards and can also be studded. Finally, it features a rim lock that helps prevent wheel slip throughout the life of the tire.

Take a look at what drivers are saying about their experience with the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac:

"Best tire hands down! 63,000 miles and great in all weather conditions. I tow with my truck 80% of the time. They wear and hook up great! Just getting a new set put on now." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2006 Ford F-350 Super Cab

"Love these on my Silverado. Perfect truck tire and the ride is great with very little noise. I've had these in all conditions from dry, wet, mud, sand, snow and ice and they do great." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD

Take a look at our survey results and see why the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac is currently the number one tire in its category.

The Best Run-Flat Tire for Your Passenger Car: Bridgestone's DriveGuard

Thursday, May 22, 2014 by Gary Stanley

Imagine you're on a family vacation traveling with your spouse and children. After a long day of activities, you are heading back to the hotel for some relaxation. The whole family is tired and just ready to get out of the car. Just a few more miles on this busy highway and you'll be there. Suddenly, you hear the sound of a tire blowout.

With conventional tires, the above scenario involves pulling over to the shoulder and calling for help. You are stuck until help arrives. Or if you were prepared enough to have checked your spare tire's pressure and savvy enough to change your own flat tire, you could attempt to install the replacement yourself. Even a car enthusiast will realize that changing a spare on the shoulder of a busy highway at night is far from ideal.

Instead, you now have a choice. You can either choose to pull over, or you can continue driving for up to 50 miles at 50 mph. Wouldn't you rather drive your family to safety and simply deal with the problem when it's more convenient? With the new Bridgestone DriveGuard, you get to make that choice!

The ability to decide what's best for you is what having a run-flat tire is all about. In the past, most run-flat tires were stiff riding, fast wearing summer-only tires that were designed for use on a short list of specific vehicles. This is not the case when it comes to the new Grand Touring All-Season tire from Bridgestone. It offers a great ride, all-season traction and a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty.

Thanks to mandatory tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) on most newer vehicles, you can use the Bridgestone DriveGuard on many common 2008 and newer passenger cars like the Ford Fusion, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, VW Jetta, Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla. Shop by vehicle to see if the DriveGuard is recommended for your car.

I absolutely love these tires. They are the perfect tire for city and highway driving. These tires have a responsive ride. That is, they give you immediate feedback from the road surface. They provide stable and sharp handling on turns. They are not for those that prefer a soft spongy ride. What I like best is they are great on dry, wet, and snowy pavement.

I had these tires on my 1993 mustang that I use for autocross when it was still in stock condition. My biggest complaint about this tire is the road noise. When compared to a tire like the old Toyo Proxes4, the Comp 2 is terrible for road noise and comfort. However, performance wise for what they are I would say they are the best in the category. I trashed these tires doing autocross. They do not like heat, but no tires at this level do. What impressed me most about this tire is how much grip it still had when it was worn to just about nothin'. I run the Rival now on a very modified 1993 mustang. There is no comparison. The Comp 2 is a very great street tire and can handle more than anyone can throw at it without committing a felony. I can't give these tires a fair treadwear rating because I trashed them, and nearly trashed a set of Toyo proxes4 immediately after just because they are simply not designed for the demanding heat cycles of road racing/autocross. I would recommend this tire to anyone who daily drives their sports car. This is a great tire, just not a track tire. It is predictable and precise.

BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2: Excellent Performance at a Great Price

Wednesday, May 7, 2014 by Marshall Wisler

Nearly two years has passed since the introduction of the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2. Today, it stands tall as the king of the Ultra High Performance Summer performance category. As a replacement for the original g-Force Sport, the COMP-2 attacked the market in 2011 with a revised compound and considerable sidewall reinforcements over the previous model.

Well liked for its aggressive design and predictable handling in the dry and wet, the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 has become the class-leading favorite with nearly 1,000,000 miles reported. The tire has also done well in our internal tests and should grab your attention if you're looking for a dedicated summer tire that combines reasonable wear with high levels of grip.

Development of the g-Force Sport COMP-2 has been honed by decades of BFGoodrich g-Force racing where success on the street has begun with winning on the track. g-Force Sport COMP-2 tires have been chosen by the Ford Racing High Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park and Skip Barber Racing for their schools and race series.

The BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 is offered in 55 sizes in ranges from 15-20" and often times features one of the lowest prices in its class. Shop by vehicle to see if this great tire is available for your application.

These were the stock tires on my F150 4x4. They didn't look like a very aggressive tread, but looks can be deceiving. I live in NW Washington. Tons of rain! Have also driven in snow up to 12". I have never lost traction in heavy rain at highway speeds (70 MPH). No hydroplaning. In the snow I was very surprised how good the traction was. I now 55,000 miles and will probably get another 10,000 miles on them. They have worn perfectly even on all tires and I have only rotated them once. These have been outstanding tires in all respects. I am planning on buying another set very shortly. Great tires and priced lower then the competition. Quiet, comfortable and long wearing.

Initial Review, 43,500 Miles on Tires
April 20, 2014

Installed on my 2007 F-150 FX2; very nice tire and best bang for the $ in an area like ours [British Columbia by the coast] where rain and snow or ice and dry weather are all unpredictable and can be encountered all during the same day of driving; even in June! Sometimes they will thump for the 1st km or so but are fine when they warm up.
I went over the Coquihala Pass in a January snow storm and passed several vehicles with snow tires that were stuck [not that the
Spec-X are a winter tire but I was happily surprised]. They tracked well [excellently!] through icy ruts even though the 275/55s are wider than most other vehicle tires on the road [so like they were a tad wider than the ruts]. 200 lbs of sand in the back of the empty truck box keeps them working in snow & icy conditions.
In the rain [and we get lots here]; they are superb; no kidding; you'd think you were on dry pavement; hit a big puddle at 120 km/hr and they haven't ever hydroplaned yet.
Cornering: I think the truck would roll over before they would lose traction; I had to learn that the Spec-Xs were better than my vehicle & its suspension and my driving capabilities.
Noise: they are on a truck not a Lincoln Town Car; what can one expect? Having said that: they do not differ with the original tires.
I have a reprogramming chip [and some other mods] and set the maximum vehicle speed to 120 m/hr; I am happily here to report the Spec-X's just cruise along and track well at high speeds; again tire performance & quality exceeds the vehicle's aerodynamics.
Would have liked to see 60K out of them but they have worked well and lasted twice as long as the original Pirelli's our F-150 came with.
I am looking for another set soon; will likely buy the 305/50R20s instead of the 275/55R20s I now have.
Compared to other tires; the Spec-X out rotates other tires in traction, wear and comfort in all settings and I'd agree with that rating.

Very good snow tire. I have put approximately 20000 miles on these so far, still have usable tread, will get one more winter out of them. To me that is good life for a snow tire. Better highway manners than most snow tires. Also good on wet roads, resists hydroplaning. That's important here in Seattle where we have wet roads 6 mo/year. I would buy again.

Initial Review, 5,000 Miles on Tires
November 14, 2013

Purchased a used Sheriff's department Police Interceptor with these tires, and have approx. 1,000 of my own miles on them during October and November during the beginning of our legendary rainy season.

Grip, road feel, and steering response are pretty good in the dry. Hard acceleration from a standing start the (rear) wheels spin despite factory limited slip, but that could be the weight distribution of the car.

I have already experienced some wet cornering traction issues, which is a problem in Oregon. The amount of rain is approx. 50" per year, and I suspect that much sustained rain means that most of the road oil is pretty cleaned up by it already. Thus, I think that wet cornering is pretty poor and a car without traction or stability control could be a handful to the uninitiated.

In addition, depending on the quality of the road surface, the tires can be either quiet or pretty noisy, and the 260 treadwear rating means that it won't live long.

They'd work in Southern California, but here, not so much. Great in the dry though.

Sports Car, Sporty Coupe and Performance Sedan Owners Need to Look at Hankook's Ventus S1 noble2

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 by Neal O'Neal

Hankook's newest addition to the Ultra High Performance All-Season category is their Ventus S1 noble2. This tire feeds the all-season sport needs of those with sport coupes and performance sedans looking to combine on-road performance with all-season traction in dry, wet and wintry conditions. Unique to Hankook, their Kontrol Technology, along with other innovations, is designed into the tire to ensure controlled driving experiences. The "K" denotes "kinetic" to reflect the interaction of the tire with the road lies at the heart of driving control. Kontrol Technology provides a range of benefits across four areas that drivers identify as key when choosing quality tires: performance, safety, comfort and environmental impact.

The tire also employs a hybrid silica compound technology that combines wet road traction with lower rolling resistance and longer treadlife. This compound is molded into a sophisticated semi-rib asymmetric tread design that features notched outboard shoulders, intermediate and center ribs to deliver responsive handling and stable cornering in dry conditions.

Take a look at what some of our customers are saying about their experience with the Ventus S1 noble2:

"Ever since I got these tires I have been so glad that I got them. The tires I had before were the O.E. and they were supposedly the best on the market, but I tell you what, Hankook tires are so much better -- they should be the ones put on new cars." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2013 Ford Focus 5-Door Titanium

"Just put these tires on a week ago so I haven't tried them on wet or snow-covered roads, yet. As soon as I pulled away from the install shop, I noticed a huge difference in noise and feel. Granted my old tires were just about shot, but these new Hankooks on my 7 Series are AWESOME! The ride feels and sounds so much better than before, it was almost like driving a new car. I never knew a tire could make that much of a difference. Totally satisfied and didn't have to pay a fortune." - Tire Rack Consumer Review, 2004 BMW 745Li

To see how the Hankook Ventus S1 noble2 performed on our test track, read "Testing Value-Priced Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires."
