Initial Review, 250 Miles on Tires
February 20, 2014

2014 In Northern New Jersey, so far has been bringing a snowstorm almost every week, 2 ice storms too. All my cars are (RWD) rear wheel drive and are very bad in snow driving conditions so i decided to buy the Firestone Winterforce tires with Studs installed on all 4 of them just in time before the major snowstorm we had on 2/13/14. I took my e23 BMW 5pd manuel on roads and steep hills that my car could never climb and those firestone winterforce gave so good traction in the snow, i was going almost the speed limit (40mph) of the road, climbing steep uphill through i say 5" of snow on an unplowed road. Actually had fun driving in the snow with no fear of getting stuck, lol. These tires saved me $28,000 from buying an AWD SUV do to harsh weather conditions this year. Also tried driving on black ice in parking lot at work and studs of tires griped through the ice at minimum slippage. Just speachless for 27 year old RWD. Also posted 2 video's on YouTube of my car going through the snow, "Snow Day Cruising BMW 735i (E23)" and video links ; http://youtu.be/HlMoVmECtA8 , http://youtu.be/Stfgt74w0P4

I have these on my 2011 Miata, with a 6-speed manual and LSD. While their dry pavement traction is not quite as good as the Bridgestone summer tires that came with the car, these are probably the best all seasons I've ever had on a Miata (and I've been driving Miatas since 1996). I've previously used Bridgestone, Firestone, and Toyo all-seasons. My Miata is my only car, so parking it in bad weather isn't an option. I haven't had them long enough to truly judge wear, but they seem to be ok so far. While they were fairly quiet when brand new, I agree that they are becoming somewhat noisy. The ride is much less harsh than prior tires, probably due to somewhat softer sidewalls, but I still have a great amount of grip, and feel confident during hard cornering. This winter is the worst we've had in years, but I've never had any real trouble with traction. At about 45 mph on packed snow and ice, I tried to get the car out of shape using only the steering wheel, but was unable to do so. When I did break loose using the throttle, it was very controllable. In about 7 inches of snow on an unplowed parking lot, I had no trouble moving the car at all. I have never tried winter tires, so I can't do that comparison, but as long as you don't get too rambunctious, these tires do the job. I will also say that I really like their grip on both wet and dry pavement. When reading some of the negative comments on this tire, I almost wonder if they're reviewing the same tire, unless this tire performs that much differently from car to car. All I can say is that I'm very pleased with this tire. If this winter becomes the trend, I may get a set of winter tires, but barring that, I feel these are a really good tire for those who want to stick with all-seasons for their car.

Just went through one of the worst winter storms in Minnesota/Wisconsin. Had to drive to the airport in Minnesota. These tires handled the ice on the freeway very well. The Off ramps were not plowed on the way home. The first off ramp to not be plowed was getting off of I-694 to HWY 36 snow was at least a foot deep. Yes I put my trusty Dodge Durango in 4H and and let er rip, I had my doubts about this tire and no longer do handled that off ramp like a champ. Then came the fun part.... I live in rural Wisconsin and when I got close to home ...no roads had been plowed, again had to put the old Durango in 4H and plow through about a mile and a half of snow drift that were about four feet high, it was a scary ride but these Firestone's did not have a problem with the high drifts and got me home bottom line. I was thinking of getting a pure A/T tire but now know these LE 2 tires out performed what I thought they could do. Nice tire !! If they keep it the same I will be buying these tires again when the time comes no need to research again.

Got these on my new Fj Cruiser. Glad I did, we got a lot of snow this winter in the mountains of Montana. About 50% of my driving is back country driving on dirt roads that are many times either unplowed, icy, or slushy. I got these tires studded and they have worked very impressively. They work fine on the highway also, but a bit noisy with the studs. Great tires for the FJ!

I've driven 57,000 miles on these tires in just about 3.5 years on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I didn't notice any significant tread wear. I'm glad I came here to read reviews and tire ratings before purchasing these tires. They are a little noisy, but that's a combination of the tires and the age of my vehicle with the lack of soundproofing in the cab I'm sure. Also, I have them balanced and rotated (free of charge) every 6-8K miles and alignment if necessary as part of the dealer/installation agreement. They are amazing in the snow/ice and rain. Best tires I've had for sure. Hoping to get another 50K out of these tires. Miles on my Jeep, 160K. Excellent Tires, will be buying for my wife's new Jeep Liberty as well.

This my second review on this tire after more than 6000 miles in snow and rain, it has been doing very well so far. I really liked the drive smooth and nice ride had to drive when it was snowing for two hours and it did not slip a bit averaging around 50 miles an hour on about 1 to 2 inches of snow been driving in the northeast snow so far happy, only thing i noticed was a slight drop in mileage since I fitted this from my Michelin Cross terrain.

Best Replacement Tires for the Honda Odyssey

Thursday, February 27, 2014 by Zig Ziegler

When shopping for tires for the Honda Odyssey most customers tend to look for tires that are quiet, comfortable riding and provide good traction in snow and on ice. Because of the large open space inside the cabin of the minivan, road noise is always an issue. Choosing the right tire can really make a big difference.

A few great options to consider when replacing tires on your Honda Odyssey include the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring, Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology and Firestone's Precision Touring. All three provide the best blend of ride/noise comfort, all-season traction and price.

 Goodyear Assurance ComorTred Touring
Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring
Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology
Continental CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology
 Firestone Precision Touring
Firestone Precision Touring

Goodyear's Assurance ComforTred Touring features a mildly asymmetric tread design that combines independent shoulder blocks with notched intermediate and center ribs to blend dry and wet road traction and handling. Four wide circumferential grooves evacuate water from under the tread to enhance wet traction while the tread grooves, notches and sipes form biting edges to deliver all-season traction in light snow.

The tire's internal construction includes a super shock absorbent Comfort Layer of rubber sandwiched between the tread and steel belts to insulate vibration and impacts with expansion joints, potholes and bumps. It also features Goodyear's dual-layer ComfortEdge sidewall supports to provide a balance of ride comfort and handling.

CrossContact LX20 with EcoPlus Technology tires from Continental use an all-season tread compound featuring their Tg-F Polymers and +Silane additives to improve treadwear, fuel efficiency and traction on slippery roads. The compound is molded into a symmetric tread design with notched outboard shoulders, independent intermediate tread blocks and continuous center ribs to blend on-road steering response and straight-line stability with reduced noise and enhanced ride comfort. All sizes of the CrossContact LX20 come with a flanged lower sidewall to help reduce the possibility of curb damage to expensive wheels.

The Precision Touring is Firestone's Standard Touring All-Season tire developed for the drivers of coupes, sedans, family minivans and crossover vehicles looking for year-round capability and comfort. Affordably priced, the tire is designed to blend long treadwear, a quiet ride and all-season traction on dry and wet roads, as well as in light snow.

Precision Touring tires mold a silica-enhanced all-season tread compound into a symmetric design featuring wide shoulders flanking interlocking ribs to provide dry road response and handling. Four circumferential grooves help guide water through the tire's footprint for wet traction while multiple notches and sipes provide the biting edges to enhance traction in light snow. The tire's structure includes twin, high tensile steel belts on top of a polyester casing to deliver strength, ride quality and handling.

Be sure to check out our test results and customer survey reviews to help you make a decision on what tire is best for how and where you drive.

Initial Review, 100 Miles on Tires
February 16, 2014

I bought my used 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible in January 2014 from a local car dealership here in southwest Ohio. It came with Firestone Firehawk GTA-2 195/55R16 tires that had about 75% of the tread wear remaining. There was light snow on the ground when I drove my new purchase home. With just a couple inches of snow/ice on my driveway, I literally got stuck with the front tires just spinning. I researched this Firestone tire on the internet and discovered that it was poorly rated for anything except dry roads even though it is suppose to be an all season tire. Some reviewers even classified the tire as dangerous in snow and on wet roads. Since my adult children would also be driving this car, I knew that I had to get these tires off the car immediately. After extensive research on www.tirerack.com, I decided on these Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 tires. They had a nice balance of performance and price. I had to order this tire in size 205/55R16 since it was not made in the recommended size 195/55R16. I was not thrilled with my limited choices of other tires in size 195/55R16. There was plenty of clearance for this Hankook tire on the vehicle and it only caused a 1.8% speedometer error (an actual 61 mph reads as 60 mph on the speedometer). I decided to write this review of this tire's performance on the Mini Cooper since one had not been posted. With this tire, there was an immediate and dramatic improvement in ice and snow traction. My Mini Cooper is now a fun little snow machine. Traction on dry roads is outstanding and wet road traction is now also excellent. Ride quality has improved by being significantly less harsh. I wanted the more compliant sidewall of this tire to improve the comfort of the Mini Cooper's stiff ride and was willing to sacrifice some handling characteristics to achieve that goal. I am not what anyone would classify as a spirited driver but to my surprise, I found the tire's handling also to be excellent.

This is my first set of Goodyear tires in a very long time. I have been running winter tire/summer tire combo for 14 years now. I've had Dunlop Graspics, Hankook Icebears for the past 5 years, Firestones witerfire, and so far these have been the best so far. My Abs hardly comes on compared to running on an all season tire. I would pass 4x4 and all wheel drive cars. I've gone by people stuck up hills and I just keep on trucking. I travel the PA turnpike and local roads to work and these tires haven't let me down. Pennsylvania has been hit hard with snow and these tires have been very good to me. Especially for the cost.

I was also worried I would not get bang for my buck.I needn't have worried.TIRE RACK MADE MY BUYING EXPERIENCE FLAWLESS!!!!I've had over 60 cars with all kinds of tires and listed my driving style as easy going but,I was working these hard to see what they will do and am impressed.8 inches of loss snow, hard packed snow, and ice,no problem.braking is what I was most concerned with and braking is excellent. There is more noise, not much, steering has a different feel,it is not a bad feel, just different.I ordered these at7:30 am central Monday delivered at 1:30 pm Tuesday!!!!Shipping, packing, speed, quality, did I mention TIRE RACK is the BEST, the only thing that could have been better is if it where free.

Buy this tire.

I bought these tires near the end of summer after my General Altimax HP tires gave me a nice long service life. I decided to go with this Firestone model because of the low cost and good reviews. My initial impression of the tire is that they are very quiet and offer good wet and dry performance. The fuel economy is about 1mpg better than the Altimax, which is negligible.

I always hesitate to write a review of a tire because for me, the winter performance is why I buy an all-season tire. I live in the Canton, Ohio area, so we get a decent amount of snow during the winter months. We recently had a good snowstorm that gave us icy conditions one day, light snow the next, and heavy snow the day after that. Please keep in mind that all of my driving was around town and not out on the freeway.

In the icy conditions, the tire performed like I expect any tire to perform: terrible. That is perfectly fine with me because I don't like being "that guy" that feels invincible because he has snow tires and/or AWD. I drive slow and try to get there in one piece. This tire got that job done for me.

In light snow, the tire did a great job. From a stop, there was the expected wheel spin that a non-snow tire provides, but it was less than what I anticipated. I never felt like I was going to slide through an intersection when the time came to stop, either. Granted, I drive slower in the snow and start braking at least 500' from a red light. The tires did not let me down in those panic situations where the light suddenly turns yellow, and I have to make a snap decision to try to brake or to potentially run the red.

In deep snow the tire did a great job as well. The performance was surprisingly similar to the light snow performance.

In all situations, I think that I would have trusted this tire on the freeway to get me to my destination, provided I would slow down for the conditions.

I would buy this tire again.

Great tires, had these on my A4 with upgraded turbo and brakes. With everything working together these tires held up fine. They are still going strong. Their wear rate is unbelievable. I drove these tires year round in new england. I had a choice of buying winters or just saying screw it, so I just used these in the winters also. They were not the best in heavy snow, but I did manage through 3 inches of snow fine. During highway snow storms and city. **Also just because I said I drove it in snow does not mean you should.

Had these tires installed in early November 2013 and have driven in sufficiently varying conditions to write an initial review. Plain and simple, these are the best d@mn tires I've ever driven on in rain, snow and ice. There is a peace of mind you get with these things that no matter how bad the snow gets, you WILL get home. They laugh at rain. From time to time, they feel a bit "wobbly" in cornering but it's livable. Mileage seems pretty good, but that's relative in a gas-guzzling Ford Exploder. I'll check back in another 5000 miles to comment on treadwear, but so far, so good. Tire Rack pricing and shipping was excellent as usual. Highly recommend the Road Force Balance as it made the truck as smooth as the day I bought it.

I took delivery of the Sportwagen in October 2010. The OEM tires were new when they faced their first snowy season in Connecticut. I was constantly checking tire pressures because the handling in the lite snow and dry was terrible. I resigned my self thinking, "Be glad with the TDI but the Sportwagen is no handler.

This winter is above average for snowfall in Connecticut and the driving on uncleared roads is mission critical for me; getting my four year-old daughter safely back and forth to school. I decided to get dedicated snows for the winter. I've had Blizzaks, Dunlops even Firestone studded tires on other family cars. I liked what I read about the Michelin X-Ice3's and decided to try them. The Michelin X-Ice3's replaced the OEM all-season Hankooks. What a difference! I keep anticipating a slide or skid, but the X-Ice3's have raised the bar when driving in the snow.

OK, you would expect them to be way better than OEM All-Seasons in snow. But, the real surprise was that the X-Ice3's have better grip than the OEM tires did in both dry and rainy conditions. No more loss of traction when accelerating.
I've changed my mind, the Jetta TDI is a pretty good handling car. I expect the Michelins to wear longer than the Blizzaks I had. Come the spring I intend to treat the Sportwagen to a set of summer-performance tires; probably Michelin's.

I’m getting ready to order my second set of these. They’re much better than the Goodyear OEM tires. They’re quieter, they track rock solid (on the highway, the Goodyears required continual steering input to keep on track), very good wet/dry traction, and impressive tread wear (I’ll have over 33,000 miles on them when they’re replaced).
