Top-Rated Highway All-Season Truck and SUV Tires

Friday, June 13, 2014 by Marshall Wisler

In the United States, the truck and SUV market is extremely popular with drivers. It should come as no surprise that the tire market for this growing market share has become increasingly competitive. In total, 33 tires in the Highway All-Season performance category are examined by our customers, and two of the most popular are the Michelin LTX M/S2 and Firestone Destination LE 2.

The Michelin LTX M/S2's symmetric tread design of stable independent tread blocks featuring high-density 3-D Active Sipes delivers all-season traction on dry roads and in inclement weather. Four wide circumferential channels, multiple lateral grooves and open shoulder slots promote lateral water evacuation to enhance wet traction and stopping performance.

Firestone's Destination LE 2 is designed to combine long wear, a comfortable ride and all-season traction, even in light snow. It features twin steel belts reinforced with spirally wrapped nylon to provide strength, uniformity and durability on top of a polyester cord body that helps cushion the ride for truck and sport utility vehicle drivers.

Initial Review, 20,000 Miles on Tires
May 13, 2014

So this is my second set. I put 70000 on the first set and the right rear developed a slow leak. Went to the local Firestone dealer and he said these tires need to be replaced. I said they have plenty of tread. He said after 4 years the side walls have had too much sun and wear. You do not want a blow out at 80 mph. These tires have been driven close to 100 mph across Texas in the summer. They have handled Stevens Pass Washington in snow storms. They have been on soft sand in Hawaii, Washington and Maryland. I'm in the military and move a lot. Logging trails in Washington and Louisiana . Ice storms in Maryland and Washington. I carried chains in the winter in Washington, but never used them. I think the law thought I was 4x4. If I rode on sand often I'd get something else. I tow occasionally, light boats and utility trailers. They are not the quietest or smoothest tires. They do not have aggressive AT tread, but for a great all around SUV tire I think they are an awesome value. I change the oil every 5 k and rotate the tires every 10 k. Check the air about once a month. I hope to put over 250k on the Volvo. If I do I'll be on my third set of Destination ATs. I'm going to put them on my pickup as soon as the ome wear out. The ome on the Volvo didn't last 20 k. I do not own stock in Firestone.

Firestone Destination LE 2: Consistent Strong Performance

Thursday, June 5, 2014 by Marshall Wisler

One of our best-selling tires in the Highway All-Season performance category over the past few years has been the Firestone Destination LE 2. Like the original Destination LE before it, the Destination LE 2 has proven itself as a long-lasting, comfortable tire that has good road manners and dependable all-season performance.

Featuring a good amount of biting edge, this Firestone tire has received high marks for its light snow traction. Currently ranked second in its category, the tire also receives high ratings in the following areas:

  • Hydroplaning resistance
  • Wet traction
  • Cornering stability
  • Steering response
  • Ride comfort
  • Noise comfort

Despite the high consumer rating, the Firestone Destination LE 2 has a modest price-point and frequently bests tires that cost 20-30% more. Offered in 42 sizes, there is a Destination LE 2 for most popular models of light trucks, SUVs and crossovers.

HEAVY SNOWS THIS YEAR IN NEW ENGLAND 2013 AND WOULD VENTURE ANYWHERE WITH THESE TIRES.I THOUGHT FIRESTONE WINTERFORCE TIRES I BOUGHT FOR MY AWD V8 MOUNTAINEER LAST YEAR WERE EXCELLENT BUT MY V8 EXPLORER SEEMS TO HAVE A LEG UP WITH THE GOODYEAR SNOW & ICE WRT'S. TWO FOOT SNOW DRIFTS IN 4WD HIGH AND 6-8 INCHES OF UNCLEARED SNOW OR ICE WILL NOT STOP VEHICLE. I HAVE YET TO USE 4WD LOW AT ALL FOR THE 2014 WINTER. YOU HAVE TO DRIVE ON THEM TO BELIEVE IT FOR YOURSELF!

Initial Review, 250 Miles on Tires

2014 In Northern New Jersey, so far has been bringing a snowstorm almost every week, 2 ice storms too. All my cars are (RWD) rear wheel drive and are very bad in snow driving conditions so i decided to buy the Firestone Winterforce tires with Studs installed on all 4 of them just in time before the major snowstorm we had on 2/13/14. I took my e23 BMW 5pd manuel on roads and steep hills that my car could never climb and those firestone winterforce gave so good traction in the snow, i was going almost the speed limit (40mph) of the road, climbing steep uphill through i say 5" of snow on an unplowed road. Actually had fun driving in the snow with no fear of getting stuck, lol. These tires saved me $28,000 from buying an AWD SUV do to harsh weather conditions this year. Also tried driving on black ice in parking lot at work and studs of tires griped through the ice at minimum slippage. Just speachless for 27 year old RWD. Also posted 2 video's on YouTube of my car going through the snow, "Snow Day Cruising BMW 735i (E23)" and video links ; http://youtu.be/HlMoVmECtA8 , http://youtu.be/Stfgt74w0P4

Had to replace the OEM Michelin Primacy MXV4 at 17k miles. Love these Firestones.

Only 200 miles, but we've already had dry and wet roads, light snow, slush, deep powdery snow and ice. This tire is a beast. Only condition I haven't experienced yet is heavy rain at highway speeds. I'm hopeful that wear holds up well.

Ride comfort and ride noise is outstanding, and really surprising given the performance. Best tire on any SUV I've had in the past 13 years.

Initial Review, 3,000 Miles on Tires

I've never really been a fan of the asymmetrical tread designs, so was a bit nervous about getting these tires. I have tried many tires on my Mercedes R350 and these Firestones are at least as good as the Michelin Latitude Tour HP and better than the Continental 4X4 Contact. The ride they give is very solid but smooth. Handling is excellent, given the large size of the car. Best of all, these Firestones are FAR less expensive than Michelins or Conitnentals. If you have a luxury crossover SUV don't hesitate to try these tires.

My car eats tires in 30,000 miles (been through Conti, Michelin and Pirellis). I'll report back about how these wear over time.

Initial Review, 30,000 Miles on Tires
December 04, 2011

We purchased this set of tires based upon the TireRack reviews from our local Firestone dealer. We have been very happy with the choice. The tires handle well, and the raised white outside lettering look aggressive, but not conservatively so, on the family SUV hauler. The handling has been very good, and the tires still look and feel as if they have not worn at all, even though the tires have more than 30000 miles on them. We would recommend these tires outright.
