Wider Tires on Your BMW 3 Series

Friday, July 27, 2012 by Gary Stanley

While moderating the BMW forums, one of the most common questions I answer is in regards to upgrading tires to a larger size. Using a wider size on the same wheel while maintaining the same overall diameter is known in the tire industry as "plus zero" sizing. This is typically done to get a larger contact patch and for an improved cosmetic appearance.

Here is a list of common plus zero sizes on two popular generations of BMW 3 Series vehicles:

E36 (most 1992-1998 BMW 318i, 325i, 328i, 330i models):

  • If you have factory 16" wheels with the Original Equipment size of 205/55R16, you can install 225/50R16 tires with no problem. This is a very common upgrade and fits the wheels well. The plus size maintains the correct overall diameter and load requirements. With this change, you'll gain about an inch in tire width.

Below are two Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 tires. The tire on the left is a 205/55R16 and the one the right is size 225/50R16.

E46 (most 1999-2005 BMW 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i models):

  • With the Original Equipment size of 205/55R16, you can use the plus size of 225/50R16.
  • Owners with the O.E. size of 225/45R17 you can plus size to either 235/40R17 or 235/45R17. With the 235/45R17 size, it's a fit in a vast majority of cases and typically only rubs on a lowered vehicle or a car with worn suspension components.
  • For the Original Equipment size of 225/40R18, the plus size of 235/40R18 will work. This is also a case where the plus size fits in the vast majority of cases and typically only rubs on a lowered vehicle or a car with worn suspension components.

For more information on this topic, read "Plus Size Wheels and Tires."

Have had these on the back of my camaro z28 an love them for the price. A great buy for a spirited car enthusiast!! Just received my front set and can't wait to put them on. With 2000 miles on these tires it looks like hardly any tread has been used! In my opinion this is the best set of tires for the price and responsiveness on dry and wet roads.

This was one of my finalists while shopping. Honestly I liked the Indy 500 logo. But after 3200 miles I am totally impressed. The car handles better than the Goodyear OEM tires. I love them. I do tone down my driving in the rain, but I have had no issues so far.

Tires were fine when new, although fairly noisy. Did fine for the first winter in colorado, but a year later they were useless in deep snow. Tires get noisier as they age and they do not handle corners well at all (lot's of squealing and slipping). They seemed to last pretty long, I replaced with them when they had 5-6/32nds left because I got a flat (drove about a mile before realizing it was flat) and the tire was ruined. I have all wheel drive and needed to replace all tires at the same time. Tires made the car ride rough (didn't realize how bad these tires were until I replaced them with something else) I bought snow tires and wheels for the winter and replaced the G019's with a summer tire (firestone firehawk wide oval indy 500) - Night and day difference! Love the firestones so far.

I've always purchased all season tires mostly. In NC, we may have a few really cold days every year. Before I had the BF Goodrich G-Forces and I loved them, also had the Michelin Pilot Sports AS. These tires really have transformed my car thus far. I can tell the gas mileage will be better. So overall impressed with the tire for the money I spent. If you have a nice car, purchased a good set of tires if you can afford, definitely makes a difference.

I have really loved this last set. I will definately go back with these. I have 2006 corvette and the factory tires were extremely loud. these have been very quite up till now and they are still better than the original foctory tires. Traction was awesome off the line. I have nitrogen in my tires and this stiffened up the cornering so it is hard to say about the handling but i love them on my car. I have never lost traction in the rain or on wet surfaces. I would highly recommend these tires.

So far the tires have performed to my expectations. If I had it to do over again i would have gotten the same tire in a 245 section as there was hardly any price difference. They were good at the last Autocross, we had nice weather and they felt responsive and predictable, good overall grip level. Wear has been unnoticeable at 3000 miles. I started Autocrossing on All seasons and these are a good stepping stone to the higher class Continental ExtremeContactDW max performance summers I plan to move on to. But I don't regret these, I may buy again, but in the 245/40R18 size.

Kosei K1 Racing Wheels for Mazda Miata

Friday, April 20, 2012 by Gary Stanley

Since the warm weather has come upon most of the country earlier than normal this year, I've recently been receiving many inquiries for new performance tires and alloy wheels. While much of your wheel choice comes down to your own cosmetic taste and price, wheel weight and quality are also important factors to consider.

Lighter wheels can make a noticeable difference in the handling of low torque, lightweight vehicles, like my 1994 MAZDA Miata. Looking for a light, high quality and attractive performance alloy wheel for my vehicle, I took a look at the options available from Kosei. While many of their styles look great, I chose the K1 Racing. Below is a photo of my vehicle with the wheels.

Many racers, autocrossers and drivers in the SCCA STR use this wheel due to its great combination of durability, weight and affordable pricing.

When it came time to choose the right tire, I went with the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 due to its impressive ratings in our Tire Survey Results. I'm going on my seventh year with these wheels, and the silver paint with clearcoat finish still looks like new. I haven't had any issues with bent wheels and to me, the style still looks fresh.

The warm weather is here, so enhance your vehicle's look with a Tire & Wheel Package today!

This tire was recommended by the salesman at the store I purchased them from. He really made them sound awesome. The tire was not a good choice for my vehicle, but was a good sale commission for him. Over the life of these tires, first thing I noticed was a drastic drop in fuel efficiency. Second thing was noise. Third was how quickly the tread lost depth. For my car, the tires were so loud, that after a qualified mechanic has replaced a wheel bearing, the test drove the car, then checked all the other wheel bearings. The noise of the tires was much like the noise of a bad wheel bearing. I didn't want to be disappointed, however I was. I have replaced them with the Yokohama AVID ENVigor. Where have they been all my life!!

I purchased this set based only on others reviews(here and on other forums) and am happy with this set. Great tires and based on tread wear I find them almost unbelievable how good the traction/stickiness they provide. I was going to buy some with a much lower tread wear number to get high performance but based on the price and reviews I tried these and I'm happy I did. These plant my car very confidently into corners and grip the whole way through. My car can be difficult to drive but with these it's less difficult and rewarding every time I drive it. They also hold the power of my turbo 911 better as well. I'd recommend these tires to another Porsche 911 driver.

Well I have to be honest, The Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 tires are the best tire I have ever used in dry warm weather. They are a little noisy at cooler temps and the wet traction is not very good. But when the temperature gets above 75 degrees they get stickier and very responsive. I'd say that it is not a New England tire since its mostly wet and cool up here, but definitely meant for a place down south. I bought the Yokohama S-Drive tires to replace the Firestone's. I will let you know my results in June. Today is 4/8/2012

I have also checked out the Firestone Website about this tire. I'm very happy with the performance on dry and wet roads with this tire, cornering is amazing and from a stop the tires just GRIP! I have complete confidence in these tires. THe only other tire I was considering where the Pirelli's but I don't think I will ever change to them with the way these tires have performed. Extremely Happy with these tires. I will buy them again and again.

I put these on two years ago and been through two Chicago winters with them. They've made me feel confident in snowy weather in my 2WD pickup. While I don't have as good of traction as a 4x4, I think it's really down to not having weight in the back. Highway driving is a dream, these tires soak up the small bumps, I almost feel like I'm not driving a truck anymore, it feels very car like. I can corner really good, I've been pushing the limit of my own conscience and so far, it just grips with minimal tire squeal. I would defiantly buy these tires again.

After running 2 sets of these tires, I'm convinced there's nothing better, especially for the money. With stock power, it's hard to break these tires loose, whether in turns or from a stand still. They give me the confidence that my old Goodyear Gatorbacks lacked while providing great thread wear for a performance tire. Given how I drive, I wasn't expecting more than 20k on a set but with all the hard turns and burnouts, I'd say 20k is pretty good. The tires also survived Upstate NY winters, provided the snow wasn't too deep to drive. While the thread compound provides poor traction in the cold, as long as the tire is moving, it does a good job to push the snow away to grip the asphalt. I'm kind of sad to see Firestone discontinue this tire, especially seeing that the reviews for its successor isn't as stellar. But I would highly recommend this tire if you can still find a set in your size.

Bought the 2011 Charger R/T Max Hemi RWD in Toxic Orange, what a car! One of the first things i look at is the stock rubber that comes on our vehicles...this one was different. I always use TireRack.com to check out where all tires fall on the ratings etc. i found that the Firestone Firehawk's that came with our 20" wheel version Max (245/45/20) was actually a farely well rated tire. After 18,000 miles on these Firehawks i can say that for the most part, im impressed! In October, the wife and i went on our honeymoon road trip. We both fit the "spirited bill" easily on driving style. we drove 5,000 miles total in 21 days. we drove alot at freeway speed of 60-70mph for hours at a time, we drove in alot of hot weather in California, Nevada and Utah. We drove in downpour's in Washington,Oregon and N. Calif. We drove very windy roads with extreme grades...extreme hairpins, lots of slow speed, U-turns and stop and go as well (getting out and taking photos at N. parks) I was (wife as well) very impressed with the overall performance of this tire...with all extremes of weather and road conditions. The Firestone Firehawks got a real workout in the state parks such as; Yosemite, Arches,Yellowstone and one highway we found out the hard way about...highway 299 in Calif....wow! What a stretch of road that couldnt be any windier or up and down...that was some road! The only thing that is not impressive is the tire life, We have accumulated 18,000 on this tire and they all are wearing uniformly at 5/32"...guess you could say they have a "soft compound" but the way i see it is that you have to trade off great performance with some longevity. I would buy these tires again, but i may be looking at the Continental Extreme Contact DWS as well. The Firestone Firehawks are some of the best performing tires i have seen, and they were stock on a great performing sedan to boot! Good pair to be matched...just that im looking at a 25,000-30,000 mile performance all-season tire..and thats OK!

My car puts down 320whp and 350wtq. I bought these for a summer set on my summer wheels. I do drive a little more agressive than majority of people and I can say these tires are amazing. Last year i had the Nitto NeoGens in the same size. Due to the price and reviews i decided on these. I can launch my FWD car like a dream in these, but they still allow or some tire smoke if needed. The side wall stiffness is good and turn in is precise with very good feel for the driver. They are not my autox tire set, but they will see the drag strip occassionally and I will update on treadwear and how the tires respond after a couple thousand miles on them. So far, awesome tire for the price.

I don't want to downgrade into the non RFT for safety reasons ( punctures ) at speed. Also the RFT has more crisp steering response than the non RFT tire. I live in the mountains in Northern California , daily drive my car to work and do some serious carving every day , Very spirited driving style. These tires have worn good for my use. The RFT tires will stay intact if you have a high speed blow out also.

Best overall tire for the C5 daily spirited driver. I've tried most max performance and ultra performance tires and this is the one that has performed best in terms of dry, wet, light snow performance, treadlife, noise, and cost. The RFT functionality works so well that I pushed its limit. I drove about 150 miles with a full flat going 50-70 MPH and the tire performed wonderfully. I don't have anything negative to say about this tire. You will not regret buying this tire. I have different tires on my C6 Z06 only because they don't make the wide ovals in that size.

I only drive my C6 in non-snow conditions and not often in the rain. I have an Edelbrock supercharger and really gun it often from red lights. These tires are a bit better than the Goodyear OEMs. Really good value for Run Flats. There may be better (OEMs or Michilens) but the cost is higher.
